Celebrating 25 Years of Friendship The Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC/ the Center) made their first visit to the City of Osaka in 1991 to develop exchange programs and build relationships with Japanese non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and non-profit organizations (NPOs) interested in working with the JCCCNC and the Japanese American community. A visit to Osaka City Hall expressing this interest gratefully led to the introduction of the Osaka YMCA. Several years later, in 1994, the JCCCNC organized its first goodwill tour to Osaka the Kristi Yamaguchi Goodwill Mission to Japan where the Osaka YMCA joined as a sponsoring organization. This event laid the foundation for a strong bond that has lasted until this day and the relationship has blossomed in a myriad of ways. When the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake hit the Kansai Region in 1995, the JCCCNC immediately contacted the Osaka YMCA to seek ways to partner with them on recovery efforts. The JCCCNC was then introduced to the Kobe YMCA and was able to not only provide for relief and recovery needs but also for direct assistance to support citizens in need. The Kobe YMCA in turn introduced other NPOs in need of support. One of the organizations was the Nagata Kodomo Homean orphanage whose building was completely destroyed by the earthquake. The JCCCNC has developed a special relationship with the Nagata Kodomo Home and has continued to support and visit the children on a regular basis. Further, the JCCCNC worked with the Kobe YMCA to create and sponsor mental health training programs for relief workers and mental health professionals to visit the San Francisco Bay Area and has provided training opportunities for their staff to learn more about nonprofit organizations in the US. In 1997, the Shinzen USA Goodwill Program was developed to connect middle school students with students in Osaka and Kobe through a sports exchange program. The YMCAs have also supported other student programs including the Takahashi Youth Ambassador Program for high school students and the Nikkei Cultural Heritage Program for college students. Again in 2011, the Kobe YMCA provided invaluable support for the the JCCCNC to directly coordinate with the Sendai YMCA to provide direct emergency relief and continued assistance through its Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (NJERF) – a program specifically organized by the JCCCNC to help individuals overcome the hardship and devastation because of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. This year, we celebrate the 25 Years of Friendship with the Osaka YMCA (19942019) and Kobe YMCA (1995-2020) and appreciate the thousands of relationships

developed, the cherished memories created and the rich life-long experiences that have occurred. Many of the JCCCNC’s participants who have engaged in the various programs continue to stay in touch, visit and value the time they shared together with the people they have met in Japan through our Osaka YMCA and Kobe YMCA relationship. These relationships would not have been possible without the support of the many staff members, volunteers and affiliated organizations that have worked tirelessly to ensure participants were engaged in the spirit of international goodwill. As participants of the 2019 Shinzen Program, we hope that you will embrace the feeling of friendship and look forward to the next 25 years! Thousands of individuals have benefitted from this strong relationship and special international bond over the years. “It takes a hello for those who are strangers to become friends.” Shinzen Motto
