Teachable Moments Hineni — By Melanie Gruenwald In the Torah, God calls to Moses and Avraham and they both respond: Hineni. Here I am. Here I stand. During Yom Kippur, the white-clad cantor chants a haunting, heart-moving prayer, entitled Hineni, where he stands before God and begs for mercy to him or her and to his community. Here I am. Here I stand. I am open, receptive and open to being engaged. Hineni. We say Hineni when we choose to be in relationship with another. We say Hineni when we meet our children for the first time, and accept our role as parents. We say Hineni when we are called on to be present, no matter what we are doing… When our children wake up in the middle of the night with a bad dream. When our three year old daughter wants our full attention– no matter what we are in the middle of—we respond, Hineni. Our call to respond expands beyond the walls of our home. Our families depend on us, and so do our communities. Research has shown that smaller communities tend to have more committed, active volunteers, while in larger communities, the perception is that each individual has less of an impact, and therefore, people are less compelled to take on leadership and volunteer roles. We see these trends reflected within our organization, and throughout the non-profit world. The mishnah teaches us, “Do not separate yourself from the community” (Pirket Avot 2:5) We are reminded on an ongoing basis, that each person does make an incredible difference to shaping our community, and we are grateful to the many volunteers who help us envision, and implement our programming over the course of the year. Not only does each volunteer make an impact, we are obliged to ‘opt in’ and say Hineni.

As we begin our new year, we would like to present the opportunity to you to say Hineni. Here I stand.

I will help to plan a program. Hineni. I will volunteer at an event. Hineni. I will do a Warm Welcome visit. Hineni. I will make a donation to Family Programs. Hineni. I will enroll in a new class with my child. Hineni. I will enroll in a class for my personal enrichment and growth. Hineni. I will reconnect with my JBU community. Hineni. On November 1st, the JCC will be honoring Joyce Zeff, with the first Hineni Award for a community leader at our Annual Dinner. We will also be showcasing ‘Shalom Baby’ and raising funds to help support and sustain the entire JCC Family Programs department. In preparation, we are connecting with JBU alumni to hear their stories, and to learn how this program has impacted their lives. When you get the call- please say Hineni. Share your story with us. Consider joining us at the dinner on November 1, Hineni. Even if you recently joined the Shalom Family community- and did not participate in Jewish Baby University, say “Hineni.” Take the first step to giving a bit of yourself- your skills, your time, your expertise, and your passion- ensure the success of our programs for years to come.

Hineni. Here I stand. Please join me.

Faces You Should Know ---Caron Blanke Assistant Executive Director Caron first began her work at the JCC in 1997 when she worked for Camp Shai and Youth Programs. She returned in 2001, after having completed a double masters in Jewish Communal Service and Social Work and spending just over a year at the Columbus JCC where she was the director of the Children and Youth department. Upon returning to Denver, Caron helped to establish the Shalom Baby program which has grown into the wide variety of programs for expectant parents, young children and families that we have today. Caron has had the pleasure of being an ECC parent to two graduates who now attend Denver Jewish Day School. Caron feels fortunate to work with a team of talented professionals at the JCC who are responsible for providing engaging programs for children under the age of eighteen and their families.

Melanie Gruenwald Director of Family Programs Melanie has worked at the JCC for one year, with many years prior experience in community organization and informal Jewish education. Her primary responsibility is to oversee the Family Programs Department and to create comprehensive mission and values driven programming, which will serve as a focal point for our community. Her goal is to “meet people where they are at” by creating high quality programming that reflects the needs of our young families. Melanie’s professional training includes a Masters in Social Work, and Certificate in Jewish Communal Service from Wurzweiler School of Social Work. Melanie is married to Rabbi Salomon Gruenwald, Associate Rabbi at HEA, and has 3 children, Koby (age 6, 1st grader at Denver JDS),Hannah (3 1/2) and Micah (3 1/2).

Melanie can be reached at (303) 316-6325 or mgruenwald@jccdenver.org Jill Katchen Family Programs Coordinator Jill has been at the JCC for 2 ½ years as the Family Programs Coordinator. She has spent much of that time working to create causal relationships with participating families and valuable programming that serves the needs and desires of the

community. “We really try to listen with openness and sincerity to what our constituents want,” says Jill. “What I enjoy most about my job is leading Shabbat Sing on Friday mornings for our ECC, creating meaningful connections, and getting to work with a tremendous team of people every day. Our door at Shalom Family is always open, and I love to share conversations over a good cup of coffee so please stop by to say “Hi!” Interesting things you might want to know: worked on a guest ranch in Steamboat; Marketing Director for Cherry Creek North; ran the 1st Jewish Dating Service in Denver; opened the 1st Starbucks in Colorado; managed Stella’s Coffee House for 5 years; taught Music Together for 5 years! Jill is married to Steve Brodsky and they have two boys, Benjamin (10) and Ari (6) who both attend The Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning.

Jill can be reached at (303) 316-6336 or jkatchen@jccdenver.org. Melissa Combs South Outreach Director Melissa has been with the JCC for a year managing the JCC's south expansion. Her focus has been to establish and build relationships with families with young children who live in South Metro Denver to better understand their JCC programming needs while working with the family programs, camp, and teen departments, as well as the Mizel Arts and Culture Center to develop and implement programs to then meet the community's needs. Melissa has spent much of her time this year working on the inaugural year of Camp Shai South that was held at Ames Elementary in Littleton. Although the first year's camp was small in size, the JCC certainly hopes that the Camp Shai South experience made a large impact on the families who participated.

If you are interested in learning more about south programming, contact Melissa at mcombs@jccdenver.org or (303) 316-6418. Jason Gold Children and Youth Coordinator Brand new to the JCC Denver family, Jason brings his youthful spirit and playful attitude to help incorporate fun and meaningful programming for children 5–12 years of age. Jason Gold grew up at the “J” in Kansas City. There he did everything from attending school, camps and sports programs to working his first

What’s New? job as an after-school program counselor at the age of 15. Jason graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.A. in Applied Behavioral Analysis and a focus in Early Childhood Education. He has worked with children in a variety of capacities, and he recently worked as the program director of a children’s gym focusing on non-competitive sports and gymnastics skills while living in Portland, Oregon. He now resides in North City Park with his Lab, Sammie, and has a passion for all things adventurous such as traveling, snowboarding, rock climbing, music concerts, but (above all else) he loves eating! “The J provided so many wonderful opportunities for me to grow and develop as an individual through camps, sports, schooling, theater and social events growing up. Most of my best friends to this day are those whom I met at the J as a child. I feel so fortunate that I can help facilitate opportunities for children and help them find their own path and develop life-long friendships in the process.”

Jason can be reached at (303) 316-6349 or jgold@jccdenver.org. Perri Klein MazelTot Family Networker The focus of Perri’s role with MazelTot is to connect young families and expectant parents to Jewish life in the Denver/Boulder area, as well as to each other. She enjoys talking to families and learning about their interests in order to help them translate those interests into opportunities to engage Jewishly. Each family that Perri talks to wants to connect somehow, so providing them with relevant community information, is to her, a measure of success. As well as serving as a resource to parents, Perri also provides support to the 32 MazelTot partner organizations by helping to spread the word about their activities and programs. Perri believes that a culmination of her past experiences, such as the time she spent volunteering for Americorps in Denver, receiving her Masters Degree in Middle Eastern History from Tel Aviv University, working with Oranim (a Birthright organization in Israel), and the six years she spent living in Israel – have all led her to this position. Perri lives in the Highlands neighborhood with her husband, Joshua Klein, who is pursuing a veterinary degree. Perri is dedicated to her work and looks forward to continuing on this journey with those she meets and speaks with. MazelTot is a non-denominational, Jewish life initiative of Rose Community Foundation in collaboration with 32 Jewish organizations throughout greater Denver and Boulder
