Teachable Moments Ch-ch-changes…. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: (Ecclesiastes 3) Autumn. It’s the time of transition- both physical and spiritual. We see our children beginning new schools and enrichment programs, the leaves are changing on the trees, and the weather gets a bit nippier. The Jewish calendar reflects these changes—as we move from the heart-stirring melodies of the High Holiday liturgy, to the physical aspects of building a Sukkah (a temporary structure, often translated as a “hut”), and eating and sleeping in it, while celebrating a holiday that reflects seasonal change. And we are constantly reminded— change is uncomfortable. New shoes are uncomfortable. New environments are uncomfortable. Changing family dynamics are uncomfortable. And we all suffer just a little bit as we go through it. The important thing to keep in mind is the age-old saying “This too, shall pass.”
One of the best gifts you can offer your children, and your entire family, is a rhythm they can anticipate — a daily, weekly, monthly routine. Our kids want to know-- what happened, what is yet to happen, and where are we going? We are driven by Jewish, academic and secular calendars. How do we bring this kind of regularity into our homes? The Department of Family Programs is offering the tried and true—Jewish Baby University, Move and Learn classes (for children from 0 to 3), Bagels and Blocks for new parents, Talk n’ Tumble for veteran parents with newborns, Warm Welcome visits for new babies in our community, and, of course, our premiere fundraising event, Chai Chairs. This year’s Chai Chairs Benefit Concert will be on November 7, featuring the fun and funky music by Shira Kline and ShirLaLa…. Please make a point to save the date, and join us to help support the programs which have supported you on your Jewish parenting journey!
The Family Programs Department understands change, too. As the new Director of Family Programs, I know how it feels to be a bit anxious for change to end and routine to settle in. In this issue of Chailights, you will see some new faces, and thankfully, some familiar ones. Our team is geared up and ready to help you survive your autumnal transitions.
We are expanding our communal Sukkah, by further developing program offerings in the South suburbs. From move and learn classes, to holiday celebrations, the JCC presence in the South is sure to be noticed! — Melanie Gruenwald

She has spent much of that time working to create meaningful relationships with participating families and valuable programming that serves the needs and desires of the community, based upon constructive feedback and successes as well as failures. “I really try to listen with openness and sincerity to what our constituents want,” says Jill. Jill earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations at CU Boulder, has experience in marketing and business management, and worked as a Music Together teacher for five years before joining the JCC.“What I enjoy most about my job is connecting with people and working within the Jewish community – our door at Shalom Family is always open, so please stop by to say “Hi!” Jill is married to Steve Brodsky and they have two boys, Benjamin (9) and Ari (5). She can be reached at (303) 316-6336 or jkatchen@jccdenver.org. Melissa Combs, South Outreach Coordinator Melissa is managing the JCC’s south expansion initiative. This initiative is in response to the growing population of Jewish and interfaith families across south metro Denver. In an effort to continue the JCC’s work in establishing a more permanent presence in the south, Melissa has
spent the first two months in her new role meeting with young families who reside in Denver’s south suburbs to better understand their interests and needs for JCC-type services. “My vision for this south JCC campus is to help provide a variety of opportunities for Jewish families to connect with the Jewish community in a way that is meaningful to them, strengthen their Jewish identity in the process, and build relationships with other Jewish families and the greater Denver Jewish community.” Melissa graduated from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. She worked in magazine publishing in Los Angeles and transitioned to public relations when she moved to San Francisco. In 2006 she relocated to Denver to live near family and has spent the past few years in Denver working in healthcare public relations. . Being an active member in the Jewish community is important to Melissa. She has been involved with Roots & Branches, Jewish Women’s Fund of Colorado, ACCESS-American Jewish Committee as a Colorado delegate to the United Nations Durban Review in 2009, and now feels fortunate to have an opportunity to be in this position at the JCC. Melissa can be reached at (303) 316- 6418 or mcombs@jccdenver.org. Perri Klein, MazelTot Family Networker The focus of Perri’s role with MazelTot is to connect young families and expectant parents to Jewish life in the Denver/Boulder area, as well as to each other. She enjoys talking to families and learning about their interests in order to help them translate those interests into opportunities to engage Jewishly. “Each family I talk to wants to connect somehow... so providing them with relevant, unbiased community information, as well as opportunities to connect, feels like a measure of success.” Perri is dedicated to this work and looks forward to continuing on this journey with those she meets and speaks with. As well as serving as a resource to parents, Perri also provides support to the 30 MazelTot partner organizations by helping to spread the word about their activities and programs. Perri believes that a culmination of her past experiences have led her to this position. She spent one year volunteering for Americorps in Denver and then moved to Israel for six years. In Israel she worked at Oranim (a birthright organization) and as a nanny, while earning her Masters Degree in Middle Eastern History from Tel Aviv University. Perri just celebrated her second year of marriage to Josh Klein, who moved them back to Denver in order to become a veterinarian. The JCC and Rose Community Foundation are thrilled to have Perri working with MazelTot. Perri can be reached at (303) 316-6324 or pklein@jccdenver.org. FALL CHAILIGHTS
Monthly Family Programming coming to the South suburbs In an effort to serve the growing numbers of families living in the South Denver suburbs, the JCC Family Programs department is working hard to create programming for these families. Programs will include music and pre/post-natal Yogalates classes, social events, Shabbat dinners and more. If you are interested in connecting with other young Jewish families this is a great option! Our fall events, such as a “Pizza Party in the Sukkah”, a Shabbat cooking class, and a Hanukkah celebration, will give you fun, easy and inexpensive ways to gather with friends and meet some new people. Please see details under “South Programming” on page 11–12. If you would like to be on an email list for upcoming events or are interested in volunteering to make these programs happen, please contact Jill Katchen, (303) 316-6336 or jkatchen@jccdenver.org. New fee scale for Family Programs and classes… Starting in September 2010, The Family Programs department will charge program participants who show up at the door, non-member pricing which is 20% higher. This is to encourage families to make reservations ahead of time so that we are able to plan accordingly for our programs. Starting this October, we will also allow families to “drop in” on a Move and Learn class for $14 (normally $12) per class, as long as that class already has the minimum number of participants needed to run the class. Reservations are required to attend a class, in order to limit class sizes. Please contact Jill Katchen, (303) 316-6336 or jkatchen@jccdenver.org. Mom-a-lates Shalom Baby and the JCC Pilates program introduces a new eightweek course specifically designed for those “moms to be” or those who are six weeks post-natal to introduce you to Equipment-based Pilates. Benefits include: core muscle stabilization, improved posture, increased energy and flexibility, and weight loss, if desired. For more information please see “Pre-natal classes” on page 8. Please also see South Programs for our new pre/post-natal “Yogalates” classes being offered on Tuesday mornings.

Extraordinary Education
At Denver Jewish Day School (formerly Herzl/RMHA) our talented, dedicated teachers are an integral part of the
school experience. Our teachers don’t just pass on information. They foster a love of learning and build a stronger community by engaging with each student. Our students describe many of their teachers, like Mrs. Otto, as “family.”
That’s extraordinary. Learn more at www.denverjds.org.

Chai Chairs, the JCC Family Programs annual fundraiser is coming November 7, 2010! The entire family is invited to enjoy a phenomenal concert by the outrageously hip “ShirLaLa” Shira Kline. The benefit concert will be followed by dinner and a program for adults and a separate kid-friendly dinner reception with entertainment! Doors open at 4 p.m.; concert at 4:30 p.m.; dinner & program at 6 p.m. A dessert reception will follow the program. SHIRA KLINE is a New York based performer and music educator. She travels with her band, ShirLaLa, throughout the country and internationally, bringing a dynamic, interactive program of joy and spirit, story and song, not to mention all out rock-star dancing and grooving! Please go to www.shirlala.com to find out more about ShirLaLa and listen to some samples of her songs! Chai Chairs is being co-chaired this year by JCC members Carla Kutnick, Dani Wynn and Jamie Resnik. All three women are alumni of Jewish Baby University, have attended many of our family programs and classes over the years and are amazing champions of our department. CARLA KUTNICK, originally from St. Louis, met her husband Jay at JCC Camp Sabra when they were 19 years old. When they moved to Denver and became pregnant, the JCC was one of their first stops, attending Jewish Baby University. “The JCC and Shalom Family are valuable assets to our community because they provide a one-stop shop for meaningful and diverse programming. Anyone can find a sense of belonging here,” said Carla. Carla and Jay now have 2 children,

Hannah (3) and Noah (7 months), and she looks at co-chairing this event as an opportunity to help put a program together that is fun and meaningful for other families and evokes a feeling of connection between families and the JCC. “Supporting Chai Chairs is an opportunity for people (including myself) to reflect on what they have received from Shalom Baby and Shalom Family and to show their continued support and appreciation for these tremendous programs.” JAMIE RESNIK and her husband Andrew participated in JBU in the fall of 2007. Through this program, Move and Learn classes and holiday events, Jamie, Andrew, Max (2 1/2) and Julia (4 months), have made some of their closest friends. “It is so important to Andrew and I that our children have a strong Jewish foundation and a connection to our Jewish community – a big part of that is spending time and forging meaningful relationships with other Jewish families.” What motivates Jamie to help plan Chai Chairs and fundraise for the Family Programs Department are these personal experiences. DANI WYNN has been participating in the JCC Family Programs Department since before her children were born—starting with Jewish Baby University, when she was pregnant with her daughter, Emma. Since then, Dani has taken an active role in move and learn classes and holiday celebrations such as Passport to Purim. She has put her creative leadership to work by helping to create havdalah and Shabbat programs, and currently serves on the committee to develop programs in the South suburbs of Denver.
Dani embodies the mission and vision of the Family Programs department, as she has led the popular Celebrate Family! Committee since its inception. Dani, her husband, Jason and children Emma (8) and Sam (5) have built lifelong friendship through the Family Programs Dept. “Shalom Family is important to me because it has created friendships, connections and Jewish experiences for my family. I have been a part of Celebrate Family since the beginning- when it was called ‘Celebrate Baby’, seven years ago,” said Dani. According to Jamie, the committee is very excited for this year’s event coming off the success of last year’s Chai Chairs benefit concert. “A family concert is the perfect way to fundraise for a department which provides so much enjoyment for young Jewish families in the Denver community.”
Tickets to Chai Chairs are available by contacting Jill Katchen at (303) 316-6336 or jkatchen@jccdenver.org. Ticket Packages include: Prices based on a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) $180/Platinum Package; a goody bag, a “ShirLaLa” CD, premium seating, and the dinner reception. $72/Gold Package; dinner reception.
