2015 DENVER JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL
WELCOME TO THE BEST OF JEWISH CINEMA! “Much of the vitality in a friendship lies in the honoring of differences, not simply in the enjoyment of similarities.” –James Fredericks As we were choosing films for this year’s festival a theme began to emerge; COEXISTENCE. “Coexistence,” living in peace together despite our differences, is the fabric of the 2015 Denver Jewish Film Festival; whether between Israelis and Palestinians, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters or between friends. Exemplifying the theme and new for this year is a committee curated shorts program, Wednesday, February 11, featuring Executive Producer Chelsea Clinton’s documentary short Of Many. We kick off the festival on Wednesday, February 4, with a fun-filled party celebrating our honoree Kathy Neustadt and a screening of the dysfunctional Jewish family comedy It Happened In SaintTropez, by female auteur Danièle Thompson (only showing opening night). We feel honored this year to welcome Executive Producer Nancy Spielberg with her documentary Above and Beyond, Thursday, February 5, and Director/Writer Lacey Schwartz with her deeply personal film Little White Lie, Thursday, February 12. Join us for our Centerpiece Film, The Last Mentsch, Saturday, February 7,
which reminds us that the best story is not always the one we prefer to hear. Topping off our extraordinary lineup is the Grand Finale Celebration on Saturday, February 14 which includes a dessert buffet and the film The Outrageous Sophie Tucker. Remember, the festival does not end on closing night. Films continue all day Sunday, February 16, with our focus on “Israel through the lens.” We open on Wednesday evening and keep our expanded festival with 28 total screening this year. We continue to offer concessions in our MorEvents Festival Lounge and many compelling discussions following films in our new Roet-Goodman Talkback Space. Don’t forget, unlike most festivals, our seating is reserved, so be sure to purchase your tickets early to get the best seat selection. To fully enjoy these events and other films we strongly recommend our comprehensive packages, in particular the Red Carpet Pass. We look forward to seeing you at the movies!

Director: Danièle Thompson 2012/France/96 minutes/Comedy French with English subtitles
OPENING NIGHT FILM Wednesday, February 4, 7:00 p.m.
Bad timing—an unexpected event the weekend of a wedding serves to bring out the differences between two brothers, Zef and Roni, in It Happened in Saint-Tropez. Zef, a religious violinist in New York, and Roni, a lapsed Jew and gem mogul in Paris, are forced to come together for Roni’s daughter’s wedding. This only exacerbates the conflict between the two brothers, as their professions, their life choices, and even their wives couldn’t be more different. Religious austerity on one side, enjoyment of life’s pleasures on the other. The only thing they have in common is an aging father who is losing his grip and their respective daughters who adore one another.

From London to Paris, New York to Saint Tropez, showdowns, misunderstandings and betrayals all serve to blow up the family landscape. Produced by Nancy Spielberg, Above and Beyond is a story of courage, commitment, and sacrifice. In 1948, a group of World War II pilots volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of Independence. As members of “Machal” – volunteers from abroad – this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war, preventing the possible annihilation of Israel at the very moment of its birth, they also laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force. At a time when much of the world stood by, unwilling to help a fledgling nation under attack, a tiny band of airmen answered the call for help. They risked their citizenship, their futures and even their lives. Above and Beyond is their story, told for the first time. Lox, Whitefish, Herring: Mouthwatering delicacies served up daily at RUSS AND DAUGHTERS APPETIZERS on the lower east side of Manhattan. It’s 1979. Carole and Jerome are idealistic, naive 20 year olds from France who sign up for an organized tour to Odessa, behind the Iron Curtain. Or at least, that is their cover story. They are Jewish cousins, pretending to be engaged in order to get into the country. By day, they maintain their cover as tourists, visiting monuments and museums, but at night they steal away and provide valuable assistance to refuseniks. They discover a clandestine world that is both brutal and absurd and it catches both of them unaware and unprepared. While Carole is driven by her political commitment and willingness to take risks, for Jerome the real motivation is his strong attraction to Carole. Quentin Tarantino declares Big Bad Wolves “[the] best film of the year.” Nominated for 11 Israeli Academy Awards and the Official Selection of the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014, this Israeli thriller will put audience members on the edge of their seats. A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: the father of the latest victim, a vigilante police detective, and the main suspect in the killings. Things begin to spiral out of control as new facts come to light in a sequence of plot twists. Darkly humorous, Big Bad Wolves is unpredictable as it strikes the balance between moral questions about the nature of evil and reacting to the loss of a loved one. Little White Lie tells Lacey Schwartz’s story of growing up in a typical uppermiddle-class Jewish household in Woodstock, NY, with loving parents and a strong sense of her Jewish identity — despite the open questions from those around her about how a white girl could have such dark skin. She believes her family’s explanation that her looks were inherited from her dark-skinned Sicilian grandfather, but when her parents abruptly split, her gut starts to tell her something different. At age of 18, she finally confronts her mother and learns the truth: her biological father was not the man who raised her, but a black man named Rodney with whom her mother had had an affair. Afraid of losing her relationship with her parents, Lacey doesn’t openly acknowledge her newly discovered black identity with her white family. The Outrageous Sophie Tucker Director: William Gazecki 2013/USA/96 minutes/Documentary English
Saturday, February 14 7:30 p.m. Grand Finale Dessert Reception 8:30 p.m. Film Film Sponsor Strear Family Foundation
The Outrageous Sophie Tucker is William Gazecki’s loving tribute to the bawdy and bodacious singer and comedienne who took the vaudeville world by storm. This ground-breaking performer influenced celebrities from Barbara Walters to Bette Midler. Deemed “The Last of the Red Hot Mamas,” Tucker was adored for her candor, bold sense of humor, powerful voice, and unwavering energy as a performer and as a woman. Sophie never fit the typical Hollywood beauty mold, but presented herself and her body in an empowering way. “A must see for anybody looking for the secret to getting ahead in life. The music is outstanding, but it’s the way that Sophie Tucker lived her life that is the most fascinating aspect. A shrewd business person, a caring individual, and a talent that continues to inspire.” A Review from Toronto Film Scene. Selected Awards & Festivals Toronto Jewish Film Festival; San Diego Jewish Film Festival; Columbus Jewish Film Festival; Long Beach Jewish Film Festival; Virginia Film Festival

Zero Motivation (Efes Be-Yachasei Enosh) Director: Talya Lavie 2014/Israel/90 minutes/Comedy/Drama Hebrew with English subtitles
ISRAEL THROUGH THE LENS SERIES Sunday, February 15, 12:30 p.m. Film Sponsor Lisa & Lynn Taussig, Sandy Wolf
Winner of six Ofir Awards including Best Director and Best Screenplay (Talya Lavie), as well as Best Music, Best Casting, Best Editing and Best Actress (Dana Ivgy), Zero Motivation is a unique, sharply observed, sometimes dark and often hilarious portrait of everyday life for a unit of young, female soldiers in a remote Israeli desert outpost. Playing out like M*A*S*H meets Orange is the New Black, Talya Lavie's brilliant debut details the power struggles of three women with different agendas and very little to do. Amidst their boredom and clashing personalities, they are forced to deal with issues of commitment—to friendship, love, and country. Darkly funny, and the recipient of both the Founder’s Award for Best Narrative Feature and the Nora Ephron Prize at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, Zero Motivation takes on gender roles in a powerful way while caricaturizing the lives of paper pushers in the military. Colorado Premiere Selected Awards & Festivals Ofir Awards (six); Tribeca Film Festival 2014 (Winner of Founder’s Award for Best Narrative Feature and the Nora Ephron Prize); San Francisco Jewish Film Festival; Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival

Zaytoun Director: Eran Riklis 2012/Israel/110 minutes/Drama Arabic/English/Hebrew with English subtitles
ISRAEL THROUGH THE LENS SERIES Sunday, February 15, 3:00 p.m. Film Sponsor Debbie & Jim Shmerling
A story of survival and friendship in an extremely hostile environment, Zaytoun takes place in 1982 Beirut. During the Lebanese Civil War, Israeli pilot Yoni (Stephen Dorff) is shot down over Beirut and is taken prisoner by inhabitants of a Palestinian refugee camp. Among the captors is ten year old Fahed (Abdallah el Akal) who develops an improbable bond with the Israeli POW. The two embark on a harrowing and dangerous journey— one that tests the very limits of humanity. The unlikely relationship and alliance between Fahed and Yoni is what ultimately will decide their fate, as they explore the true boundaries between Israelis and Palestinians. Paradise Cruise Director: Matan Guggenheim 2013/Israel/100 minutes/Drama Hebrew/English/French with English subtitles
ISRAEL THROUGH THE LENS SERIES Sunday, February 15, 7:30 p.m. Film Sponsor Ellen & Scott Robinson, Joanne & Art Kleinstein, and Ricky & Don Safer
Paradise Cruise is a film about the relationship between Dora, a French photographer and Yossi, a former Israeli soldier. It appears that Dora has a professional interest in photographing the funerals of Israeli soldiers killed in the line of duty, but actually she is obsessively searching for “the eyes” of the killer of her friend, a Palestinian photographer. Yossi is plagued by his own issues, but together the couple find passion that seems to temporarily free each of them from the traumas they have experienced. The film is an impactful look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the way in which it causes a lasting impression on both sides. It is also a study of the devastating uncertainty in the meaning of the verb “to shoot” from both a photographic and a military standpoint. Colorado Premiere Selected Awards & Festivals Brooklyn Film Festival (winner of Best New Director for Matan Guggenheim); International Film Festival Manheim-Heidelberg; Paris Israel Film Festival (Audience Award Winner); Rome Independent Film Festival; Uruguay International Film Festival; Aubagne International Film Festival (Best Actor Award)

19th Denver Jewish Film Festival Seating Policy
All Seating is Reserved Unlike most film events, our festival has a reserved seating policy which works much like any live theatre or concert event, where each patron has an individually numbered seat for each film. This means that if patrons are seeing multiple films, they may need to move seats after each showing. Patrons that purchase tickets in advance may request the same seat (if it is available), but they will need to exit the theatre and present their ticket separately for each film. Reserve a specific seat each time you purchase a ticket. Visit the website at www.maccjcc.org/film to view a chart of available seating for each film. Doors will open 20 minutes prior to each screening. Please come early so you can locate your seat number and row. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the ushers. The theatre will be emptied after each screening in order to clean and conduct a sound check for the next film. Please help us keep the festival running on time by leaving the theatre promptly. New handicapped seating is available. To reserve handicapped seating please contact the box office at (303) 316-6360. Free parking for the DJFF is available in other MACC/JCC lots to the south and west of our venue; street parking on Dahlia, Alameda and the neighborhood to the north of our location is also free.
