Advising & Registration Academic Advising Academic advising helps develop connections between students, faculty and staff and helps to build supportive relationships. All new JCC students are assigned an advisor who provides appropriate information, makes referrals to campus resources, and supports students in achieving their goals. ACADEMIC ADVISING IS CRITICAL! See your advisor on a regular basis to make sure you are on track with your academic program and courses. Advisors are accessible during walk-in advising and by appointment. Please contact your JCC location to identify your advisor and set a meeting.
Walk-In Advising Walk-in advising is designed to assist students with quick questions. Sessions typically take 5-10 minutes. Due to the popularity of walk-in advising, you may experience a wait during walk-in times.
Advising Appointments During your first semester, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with your academic advisor for guidance in future course selection and planning. The main goal of an advising appointment is to create or update your Student Education Plan (SEP), an individualized plan of courses that meet your degree requirements. Your SEP will list the courses you will need to successfully complete to earn a certificate, associate degree or to transfer to another school. Your SEP will serve as a “master list of courses and prerequisites you need to complete to achieve your educational goal. You will be able to view your SEP on e-Services. Advising appointments can be made by contacting the Student Services Office at your JCC location.

Are you planning to transfer to another institution after you obtain an associate degree at JCC? Even if it is your first semester at JCC, it is never too soon to begin mapping out your educational plans. Speak with your academic advisor so they may assist you in selecting coursework that will transfer. It is also a good idea to speak with an advisor at your intended transfer institution. We also have several fouryear university partners located in McDivitt Hall on the JCC Central Campus. Stop by for more information on their bachelor degree programs and steps you should take to prepare to transfer.

Transferring Credits to JCC Have you attended another college? Please speak with your academic advisor about transcript evaluation for possible JCC credits. For more information, please refer to: www.jccmi.edu/ policies/studentservices/policies/2819.pdf. Undecided about your program of study? The best place to begin with your choice of programs is to think about your own interests, values, abilities and personality. You may also need to think about what your goal is in choosing a program. Do you want your program to prepare you for a specific career field? Do you want your program to help you develop a depth of knowledge and skills that you can apply in many different fields of work? Or will your program simply be a subject that you enjoy studying? The Center for Student Success has career assessment tools that can assist you with your decision. In addition, your academic advisor can help you select a program of study and the courses necessary to achieve your academic goals.
Get Credit for Prior Learning Ask your academic advisor about credit for prior learning. You may be able to get college credit demonstrating college-level competencies by using prior learning options or credit by examination. JCC recognizes that some students enter college with proficiencies that warrant college credit. Credits awarded for prior learning are applicable for degree and certificate requirements and may be earned by the following options. Prior learning credit for waiver or substitution of a degree requirement may be granted to students through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), articulation agreements, Advanced Placement (AP), military credit and credit by examination.

Financial Aid Getting ready for college takes lots of planning, especially financial planning. The Financial Aid Office can help you find available educational financial aid. Call the Financial Aid Office, 517.796.8410, for more information. We will answer your questions about meeting college costs and applying for financial aid.
Types of Financial Aid JCC administers federal, state, institutional and private sources of financial support. You may qualify for one or more of these types of aid. • Grant or scholarship – gift assistance you do not have to repay. • Loan – borrowed money you must repay with interest. • Federal work-study – part-time employment on-campus.
Applying for Financial Aid Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the most important step in the financial aid process. 1. Federal Student Aid Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form as soon after January 1 as possible. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to start the application process. If you do not have your taxes filed yet, you can complete the FAFSA by estimating and then making adjustments once your taxes are done. If you have difficulties call the JCC Financial Aid Office at 517.796.8410. Note: Many scholarships, state and local grants require that you complete the FAFSA as part of their eligibility. Make sure you do the FAFSA before March 1 to meet the Michigan preferred deadline.

Remember, you must reapply for financial assistance each academic year.
• Full-time: 12 or more credits per semester.
Financial Aid Timelines Students applying for federal assistance based on need should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible after January 1 every year. To guarantee that your full financial aid package is ready for the fall semester, be sure to file your FAFSA and submit all required documents prior to July 1. After June 1, you may experience some delays in receiving your financial aid award. Students requesting financial aid must apply each academic year. Financial aid recipients must register for classes prior to the end of the drop/add period to receive their financial aid for the semester.
STUDENT LIFE
The following student classifications are used by JCC in determining financial aid award amounts. Other schools, agencies, government organizations and financial aid sources may use different classifications.
Most financial aid is awarded to students on the basis of need: estimated expenses such as tuition, books, supplies, transportation, room and board, and personal expenses, minus the expected family contribution. Some financial aid may also be available regardless of need. Such monies may be based on a specific area of interest, academic major, talent or other category.
• Three-quarter-time: 9-11 credits per semester. • Half-time: 6-8 credits per semester.
• Overload: 19 or more credits per semester (requires approval by the dean of student services).
A student may receive aid to repeat a previously passed course (0.5 – 4.0) one additional time. Once a student has completed any course twice with a passing grade (0.5 – 4.0), he/she is no longer eligible to receive aid for that course.

Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) In order to be eligible for financial aid, students must meet the satisfactory academic progress standards at JCC. To meet these standards, students must have: • A cumulative financial aid GPA of a 2.0 or better. • Successfully completed 67% of all attempted credits [Attempted credit hours include grades of: (P) Pass, (W) Withdrawal, (F) Fail, (I) Incomplete, All other course grades (0.0 – 4.0)]. • Not attempted more than 150% of their program. [For example, students working toward a 60-credit hour associate degree can attempt 90 credits (60 x 150% = 90). Once 150% has been attempted, including transfer credits, the student has reached credit limit].
Financial Aid Appeals If a student is not meeting these requirements, they may not be eligible for certain types of financial aid, or any financial aid at all. If a student experienced certain extenuating circumstances, they may appeal the decision. Appeal forms are available on the JCC website at www.jccmi.edu/ombudsman/forms.htm and can be filed through the Student Ombudsman Office. For more information on the Financial Aid Appeal Policy and related forms, please refer to www.jccmi.edu/ombudsman.

JCC requires that students maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP) in order to keep financial aid. The College will consider all periods of academic enrollment, including attendance at other institutions, in calculating SAP.
• If you are awarded financial aid, be sure you know what guidelines you must maintain in order to keep your award (such as GPA, work status, credits completed, etc.). You must make academic progress by passing at least 67%of your courses and maintaining a 2.0 GPA. Some scholarships have higher GPA requirements.

• Financial Aid Suspension Status – Students who do not meet the satisfactory academic progress policy after the warning period are suspended from financial aid. Students are ineligible for any assistance until, at their own expense, they have improved their cumulative grade point average and/or semester completion rate. No financial aid is revoked without the student first being placed on warning status. Students placed on financial aid warning or suspension status may appeal the decision using the financial aid appeal form through the Student Ombudsman Office.
• Make an appointment to meet with someone in the JCC Financial Aid Office. Discuss the difference between grants, scholarships, subsidized loans, unsubsidized loans, and work study. Keys to College Success Working with Instructors Your college instructors are the most important people in your college experience. They not only provide instruction, they are here to serve as advisors, mentors and as a resource to ensure your success. Your effort in developing and maintaining positive faculty relations will go a long way in supporting your academic goals.
Basic Tips for Working with Faculty • Visit your instructors during their posted office hours. • Ask your instructors for copies of old exams. Some instructors may have a problem with “old exams,” perhaps stating “sample test questions” would be more appropriate. The questions may change but the style usually remains the same. • Make sure your instructor knows your name. Putting a face with a name may be a big help. • Problems with faculty should be handled honestly and calmly. Always try to remedy conflicts with faculty members first. If the problem remains unresolved, seek advice from the Student Ombudsman and follow the Academic Complaint steps at www.jccmi.edu/administration/deans/ student_resources.htm. Instructors are required to design a course syllabus to be distributed to students during the first week of classes. The instructor’s syllabus will be the basis upon which you may appeal a grade.

Glossary Academic Year: The semesters of fall, winter and spring, in that order, make up one academic year, roughly from late August to the early part of the following August.
Academic Warning: Overall GPA for the semester of less than 2.0. Financial aid recipients are required to pass 67% of all credits attempted. Withdrawing or receiving less than a 2.0 may jeopardize future financial aid.
Advanced Placement:
Some institutions accept AP test results, taken by high school juniors and seniors, for college credit. Policies vary from college to college.
Associate Degree: Consists of about 60 or more credit hours (about 20 classes) that follows a list of courses to take (degree requirements). JCC associate degrees must all fulfill outcomes set by the Board of Trustees. Most students planning to transfer work toward an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree.
Associate of Applied Science Degrees: These are specialized associate degrees that have specific skill sets as well as an array of general education courses that fulfill the outcomes set by the JCC Board of Trustees.
Associate of Arts Degree: An associate degree that concentrates on social science and humanities selections, allowing about 12-19 credits of elective credits.
Associate of Science Degree:
An associate degree that concentrates on science and math with about 11-17 credits of elective credits.
Bachelor’s Degree: Colleges and universities grant bachelor’s degrees, which are comprised of about 124 credits. Students can transfer up to 60 credits from community colleges to
28
count toward a bachelor’s degree, with some accepting more. Always check with your transfer college for admissions rules and consult with academic advisors.
Billing Contact Hour:
The actual time spent with the instructor in class, plus scheduled times in labs and clinicals, over the course of the semester. Tuition is based on the number of billing contact hours. Billing hours are usually the same number as academic credits, but in some cases are more. For example, a four-credit biology class with a lab is usually five billing contact hours.
Catalog:
Contains policies, degree requirements, course descriptions and resource information for JCC. A new catalog takes effect every year. The catalog can also be viewed on the JCC website at www.jccmi.edu/studentservices/Catalog.
Catalog of Entry: The catalog current at the time you started at JCC. If you maintain continuous enrollment, you follow the requirements listed in your Catalog of Entry, or a more recent catalog of your choice.
Certificates:
College certificates are generally 30-50 credit hours (about 10-16 classes) and concentrate on specific skills with few general education courses.
Class Schedule: The booklet printed and/or posted on the web listing details of when and where classes will be held for a specific semester. Use e-Services to search for classes for the most current availability.
Concentrations: A coordinated set of courses to enable students to quickly achieve a specific occupational goal. Concentrations are at least 16 but no more than 29 credit hours.
Jackson Community College
Corequisite: A class that must be taken at the same time as another particular class because of the relationship of materials.
Course Section: The same course is offered at a variety of times. Each of these classes has its own section number. For example ENG 131 section 12 might meet on Monday nights and ENG 131 section 13 might meet on Tuesday afternoons.
Credit Hour: Academic credit based on the time spent in class. Roughly, a three credit class means you spend three hours a week in class with an instructor over the length of the semester.
Course Placement: An assessment that determines your need for further preparation for college-level work. If you do not have recent ACT scores of 18 or higher in math, reading or English, or if you do not have previous passing college grades, you will be asked to complete Course Placement prior to enrolling in academic courses for grades. We also accept SAT scores. For high school guest students we use PLAN, PSAT, and Explore assessments.
Cumulative GPA:
Your overall GPA earned over your entire time at JCC.
Developmental Courses: See “Foundational Courses” Dropped:
To un-register from a class after you have registered for it and the class has started. Dropping a class before the “Add/Drop Period” for 100% tuition refunds does not affect your transcript. Withdrawing after this 100% refund period leaves a W (Withdrawal) on your permanent transcript record. Students are still responsible for tuition and fees.
Electives:
Some degrees offer you options as to courses you can take that are not listed specifically in the requirements. Read the degree requirements carefully. Some degrees restrict your elective choices to specific types of courses.
www.jccmi.edu
FAFSA: This Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a federal form that must be filled out and mailed or completed over the Internet. File by March 1 of each year for the best chance at federal and state funds for the following fall semester. The FAFSA must be completed annually if your wish to be considered for federal student aids or loans on an ongoing basis.
FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 provides protection of a student’s right to privacy of information that JCC has in its possession concerning the student; and, a reasonable guideline for release or disclosure of such information as is required by federal and state law and as is necessary for the effective functioning of the College.
Foundational Courses:
Your success at college classes depends upon your entry level skills at reading, writing and mathematics. Your need for foundational courses is identified by your assessment results. Foundation courses include CIS 090, 095, ENG 080, 085, 090, 101, 102, 109, 110, MAT 010, 020, 031, 033, 035, 090, 095, 098, 100, 110, MTT 009. The ENG and MAT Foundational courses may not count toward college degrees, as they are considered preparatory. The FYS courses may count as electives and may transfer. New students in a required foundational reading, writing or mathematics course must also enroll in FYS 105 or 110. Check the catalog or website to verify class list for those that will not count toward your degree.
General Education: A variety of courses that the JCC faculty and Board of Trustees believe are necessary to be a well-rounded, educated citizens, general education classes also help students with critical thinking and self expression. General education disciplines are: English, mathematics, science, social science, humanities, and health/physical fitness. Also see MACRAO.
29
GPA:
Grade Point Average, based on honor points earned divided by the number of credits. Honor points are determined by multiplying the grade by the course credit.
Holds:
A hold on your record falls into several categories. In some cases, a hold can prevent you from registering. Contact Student Services to help figure out why you have a hold and how to clear it. • Academic: your GPA is under 2.0 or you don’t pass 67% of your attempted credits. • Business Office: for students who owe money to the college or have defaulted. • Dean: students who have been dismissed from the college for violating college policies about student conduct or have been warned about behaviors. • Financial Aid: Warning holds flag students who have not met the academic requirements for their financial aid. Financial aid students may also have a probationary hold or a suspension hold. • ID: You must provide a valid, state photo ID. • Library: you need to return materials or pay fines. • Verification of Program of Study: Each year all students receive this hold. You need to update your program of study, by phone, fax, mail, in person or on the web. Data that we report to the federal and state government requires that we provide accurate program information.
HQV Grades: Three times each semester, faculty provide grades online as a checkpoint for students. “H” means the student could benefit from academic support services such as tutoring. “Q” means the student has not been participating and is to be dropped/withdrawn from the course. Students may still owe tuition and fees as a result. “V” serves to verify that the student is currently participating.
30
Lower Division: Courses at community colleges, which provide mostly 100 and 200 level courses as noted by the course numbers (such as ENG 131 and MAT 251), are considered freshman and sophomore level, or lower division.
MACRAO:
This acronym stands for the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. The MACRAO agreement helps students transfer from Michigan community colleges into four-year colleges and universities by providing an agreed upon assortment of classes to take that fulfill general education requirements toward a bachelor’s degree. Ask an advisor for details.
Official Transcript:
The copy of your transcript that is issued and mailed directly from one institution to another, JCC accepts only official transcripts for evaluating transfer credit. (See also Student Issued Transcript and Transcript.)
Prerequisites: Many college courses need a certain level of skills or knowledge as you begin the class in order to succeed. Talk with the instructor or an advisor to see if you meet the prerequisites. These are also listed in Course Descriptions in the Catalog.
Program of Study: Basically, the degree or certificate you are working on becomes your program of study. If you are planning to transfer to a four-year institution, your program of study might be listed here as a transfer program, such as education or psychology.
Registration: The period of time during which you can enroll (register) for classes for a specific semester.
Registration Schedule Bill: See “Schedule Bill.” Return of Title IV: Students attending JCC, as Title IV (Federal Funds) financial aid recipients, who withdraw from all of their classes during the
Jackson Community College
first 60% of the semester will be subject to an adjustment of Title IV Funds. This U.S. Department of Education calculation may result in the student owing the College. The return of Federal Title IV Funds will be in the following order: Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, Federal Subsidized Loan, Federal PLUS, Federal Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant.
Schedule: See “Class Schedule.” Schedule Bill: When students register in person, by fax or by mail, they receive a print-out of courses, expenses, drop dates and withdrawal dates.
Scholarships: Money made available to students based on academics, program of study or financial need. Scholarships are not paid back and usually have conditions the student must maintain. For example, some scholarship recipients must carry at least 12 credits and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA.
Transcript: Your legal and historical record of courses attempted and completed along with all grades. Transcripts may not be changed unless there has been a clerical error. You may request a transcript for your own use or have official copies sent to other institutions or employers by contacting the records office. (See also Official Transcript and Student Issued Transcript.)
Transfer: Moving the credits earned at one college to another in order to complete a degree or certificate.
University Center: University transfer advisors are available from our partnership institutions to guide you through the transfer process. This service is located in McDivitt Hall.
Upper Division: Courses at the junior and senior level (300- and 400-level) usually only available through four-year colleges and universities that grant bachelor degrees.
Skill Sets:
A planned group of courses to meet needs of employers and of students to rapidly build expertise. Skill Sets are up to 15 credits.
Student Issued Transcript:
You may print a copy of your transcript from e-Services or request a copy. If you request a copy from us, it will be printed on transcript paper and stamped with “Issued to Student.” Most transcripts that are sent to other institutions to transfer credit need to be official, not student-issued. When you send us a request for a transcript, be sure to include who needs to receive it. (See also Transcript).
Syllabus:
A document from an instructor containing a course outline, assignments, attendance and grading policies, and office hours. The syllabus is usually handed out to students on the first day of class. Syllabi are also posted on the Academic Deans’ web page.
