Cabaret

Book by Joe Masteroff | Based on the play by John Van Druten and Stories by Christopher Isherwood

Music by John Kander

Lyrics by Fred Ebb

Recommended 16 years +

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920s end, an intriguing Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Daring, provocative and exuberantly entertaining, Cabaret explores the dark and heady life of Bohemian Berlin as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich.

One Life

Based on the book If It’s Not Impossible…: The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton by Barbara Winton, ONE LIFE tells the incredible, emotional true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who visits Prague in December 1938. In a race against time, Winton convinces Trevor Chadwick and Doreen Warriner of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia to rescue hundreds of predominantly Jewish children before Nazi occupation closes the borders.

The Stronghold

Sinai Desert, 1973. When a desolate Israeli outpost comes under siege after a surprise Egyptian attack, the surviving soldiers must choose between following their idealistic commander into a final, hopeless battle, or going along with the level-headed doctor, whose plan will save them, but will betray their core values.

Shoshana

Inspired by real events, SHOSHANA is a political thriller set in the 1930s in Tel Aviv, a brand new European, Jewish city being built on the shores of the Mediterranean. Thomas Wilkin is in love with the city and with Shoshana Borochov. Through their relationship, the film explores the way extremism and violence push people apart, forcing people to choose one side or the other.

Avenue of the Giants

Avenue of the Giants tells the true story of Herbert Heller, who kept his miraculous escape from the Auschwitz Birkenau death march a secret for 60 years, even from his family. That is, until he meets Abbey, a young teenager whose own brush with pain and death inspires him to open up as well, leading the two of them to exchange their stories as a meaningful and healing friendship is born.

How does Nishmah inspire?

Through several diverse and inspirational programs, Nishmah brings together Jewish women from different denominations who may have otherwise never met. Together, these women learn from each other, connect, and form bonds through faith and friendship. Nishmah creates the foundation for these Jewish connections that form outside the walls of a synagogue environment.

v How does Nishmah

educate?

New this year, Nishmah began a monthly book club to connect women through learning and intellectual stimulation around trending topics. We have looked at the diversity of the Jewish community, the history of White Nationalism and how it fits into tropes of antisemitism. We also do experiential learning. Our Facebook group is an active place to share articles, news and upcoming events in areas of interest for Jewish women in St. Louis.

How does Nishmah engage?

Nishmah also engages women in study and connection, through our Ilene Joseph Salon Series, facilitated discussions about stimulating articles on topics of interest. We partner with many Jewish organizations and synagogues to bring women together across denominations and we create a unique multigenerational space. Nishmah partners with internal programs at the J to attend New Jewish Theater shows, Israeli cooking classes and so much more!

Ilene Joseph Salon Series Adult Women

Nishmah’s Salons are intimate, thought-provoking, facilitated discussions on topics of interest to all who identify as Jewish women. This program is named for Ilene Joseph z”l, one of Nishmah’s founders and a passionate supporter of the Salon Series. Discussions are free to attend, donations to Nishmah welcome.
