The J – Impact Every Day
St. Louis Jewish Community Center 2017 Annual Report 5777-5778

St. Louis Jewish Community Center, 2017
Everyone is welcome at the J. You’ll see these words on all our materials. We live them every day. Our mission, to enrich lives, build community, promote inclusivity and create meaningful Jewish experiences is evident in every program, service and experience we create. Why? Because everyone is changed by what we do and the experiences they have here: supporting someone in her fitness quest, helping an elderly man stay in his home by delivering nutritious meals, providing a truly life-changing summer camp experience for a child. We make life easier. We inspire people. We know this because we continually monitor the impact of our work. As a successful business, we have tools and metrics in place to ensure that what we provide is meaningful, relevant and impactful. At the beginning and the end of every day, we know our business – our mission – is serving people: old, young, healthy, disabled, Jewish and otherwise, those who are able to give and many, many who are in need. What we do matters – and we hope, as you turn these pages, you’ll understand just how much. We thank our board, volunteers, funders, donors, partners and staff for ensuring that we are able to continue to create impact every day.

2017: An Amazing Year
In addition to providing excellent fitness programs and services to 16,000 members, the J creates and delivers meaningful experiences of all types to nearly 70,000 people through one million touchpoints annually. Here are some of the highlights. 4
Jewish Life
5,000 pounds
Our volunteer-tended Garden of Eden yielded more than 5,000 pounds of fresh produce for the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. We use this amazing resource as a teaching opportunity for students who participate in our Club program, as well as numerous other community groups to instill a sense of Tikun Olam.
110 women
More than 100 devoted volunteers helped conceive and implement a year of enriching and enlightening Nishmah programming, from the transformative Shushan Nights Purim experience to intimate Salon Series conversations, to a Mikvah Guide training, to Pink Out for breast cancer awareness. More than 400 participants of all ages (men and women) engaged with these and other meaningful Jewish programs.
306 leaders
For 10 years, our J has hosted the highly acclaimed Song Leader Boot Camp. This year, 306 educators, song leaders, rabbis, cantors, youth group leaders and counselors developed skills to better engage and inspire those within their sphere of influence – estimated to be more than 100,000 across the U.S. and Canada!
Early Childhood Center
3 curricula
Children require support to develop academically and socially. We use three separate curricula in our ECC program to ensure our children develop both a love of learning and the ability to interact with their fellow students. In today’s world, providing a strong foundation for academic as well as social/emotional intelligence is essential. Project Construct, Conscious Discipline and Sheva, unique to the JCC community, are integrated to shape imaginative thinkers and compassionate human beings who are ready to master kindergarten.
2,646 hours
Teachers at our ECC program are required to complete 42 hours of professional development annually, whereas state licensing requires only 18 hours of continuing education. We invest in our teachers because they are responsible for helping our most cherished asset, our children, achieve their potential. Our teachers are developing the future leaders of our community.
300 playdates
Unique to the J, our children spend quality time in carefully planned intergenerational programming which benefits both our students and our seniors. Together, they explore art and music, they play games and just talk about their world.
55
J Day Camps
770 children
There’s nothing quite like a summer at our Day Camps. We offered 37 different camps, where kids learned new skills, made new friends and were in an environment that promotes a healthy life. In today’s world, J Day Camps are an important element, helping children learn to play creatively and develop skills that are essential in developing the whole child.
10,540 swim lessons
While a camper can select from a wide variety of camps at the J, one thing remains true – all of our campers receive (as part of the camp day) instruction from Red Cross-certified swim instructors because we believe, as the Talmud says, that it is our obligation to teach our children how to swim.
Camp Sabra
675 campers
If you want to see magic happen before your eyes, visit our third campus, Camp Sabra. It’s where campers from 20 states and five countries learn to live with others and develop lifelong friendships. Resident camp has been identified as one of the most important experiences a child can have to ensure he/she lives a rich Jewish life. At Sabra, we practice Joyous Judaism that makes kids want to explore more about what being Jewish really means to them.
312 values-in-action
Ultimately, the values we instill at Camp Sabra (and throughout all of our J programs) – kindness, courage, gratitude and social responsibility, to name a few – help provide a moral guide for all of our kids. Our campers take time every day to identify and commend their friends for demonstrating these values (312 times last summer!).
6,976 grilled cheese sandwiches
Creating a kind Jewish community can happen around the lunch table, where campers and friends share songs, cheers and prayers – food for the body, food for the spirit.

Cultural Arts
Jewish Book Festival New Jewish Theatre
20 seasons
We celebrated the 20th season of our awardwinning New Jewish Theatre and won three St. Louis Circle awards, bringing the total to 22 wins and 100 nominations!
7,600 literary fans
30 authors presented over a two-week period about topics that both inspired and amused. As one of the largest Jewish Book Festivals in the country, we cherish the time with have with the thousands who attend this special event each November. We are the “People of the Book.”
25 films
A hard-working volunteer committee screens more than 75 films to select those which will comprise our St. Louis Jewish Film Festival. The creative expression of ideas through film makes this festival both special and important.
Jewish Film Festival Youth Theatre
65 young thespians
We love receiving reports from parents that their children have developed more confidence and have made new friends. Many of these reports come from parents with children in our Youth Theatre program. Memorization of lines, working in a group toward a common goal, and learning to project with confidence help make for welladjusted, confident children.
1,100 teens
More than 1,100 teens, many who know little about the Holocaust, heard survivor Michael Bornstein and his daughter, Debbie Bornstein Holinstat, discuss his book, Survivor’s Club. The questions that emerged following the presentation reflected a measure of deep understanding of the suffering of previous generations and the need to never forget.
77
Fitness
20,565 members
Some people might think that there’s nothing Jewish about a fitness center but we couldn’t disagree more. Through our fitness center we demonstrate the Jewish values of Bruchim Ha’Baim (welcoming the stranger) and Kehillah (community). Think about the connections that are made when two people are on treadmills next to each other every morning. Judaism teaches us the body is the instrument of the soul, and we need a healthy body in order to contribute good to the world.
13,108 hours of private training
Whether you’re 13, 31 or 93, our trainers can help you achieve your fitness goals. All of our trainers are nationally certified and specially trained to work with you, regardless of your level of fitness or your aspirations.
4,043 group training sessions
Group Training is a great way to help you achieve your goals in a fun, social setting. Whether it’s “Box Your Best,” or Outdoor Boot Camp, or even if you prefer to customize your own Small Group Training, we are here to help. You know what they say – the best exercise is the one you’ll actually do.
88
Sports, Recreation & Aquatics
2,936 athletes
Young and old, team and individual, all athletes in J sports leagues and the St. Louis Senior Olympics benefit from a supportive community, demonstrations of sportsmanship and healthy competition.
6,428 swim lessons
In addition to the lessons we provide as part of our camp program, we also provided individual and small group lessons to more than 700 children.
50 athletes
St. Louis teens competed in the annual JCC Maccabi Games® in Birmingham and Miami last year. The Games represent the single largest event for Jewish teens and help connect these teens to their community, to their heritage and to each other.
Inclusion
16,666 hours of support
The J provides 1:1 support when possible so people with disabilities can attend camp, work out in the fitness center and participate in many other J programs.
163 families
Families with loved ones with disabilities must overcome an extra life challenge. We’re happy to provide these families with group and individual support when possible.
Millions smiles
We have lost count but we think we produced more than a million smiles on the faces of those who call the J home. Whether it was because we were able to produce a second Theater Unlimited performance (with the support of some very generous donors) or because kids were just having the time of their lives at our J Day Camp, we love knowing that we are a home away from home for so many who rely on the J for support.
Adult Day & Kitchen J
12,870 meals
Warm, kosher meals were provided to homebound seniors through our Meals on Wheels program and for those who live at Covenant Place. Performing acts of Chesed (lovingkindness) is a core Jewish value. For some seniors who are unable to leave their homes, our delivery driver is the only person they may see on a given day. We deliver these meals with a warm smile and a big heart.
5,700 rides
Transportation to and from our Adult Day program helps dozens of seniors live at home longer, providing a valuable service for participants and their caregivers. Many report that their loved one thrives in our program, stemming the progression of decline.
6 IN
Offering our new IN Program, as part of our Adult Day program, started with a small goal and a big vision – to provide meaningful services to young adults with disabilities who had aged out of the Special School District. This full-day program provides training and experiences that support social and emotional growth as well as healthy living habits. This program has now doubled in size, reflecting the need that exists.
24/7/365
Our doors may not be open 24/7/365, but the impact we make affects us every hour of every day of every year. We are intentional about what we do and how we do it. We couldn’t do it without you!

The Impact of the J
The J means so much to so many. Meet two families who shared what the J means to them.

The Impact of the J Member Spotlight: Abby Kushnir
T
he J has been a part of my life for more than 30 years. I attended preschool at the J, as well as Day Camp and Camp Sabra. I participated in the JCC Maccabi Games® and worked as a counselor at Day Camp. More recently, I had two children graduate from the Early Childhood Center – some of my favorite memories involving the J – and my third child continues to thrive at this amazing Center. My children have participated in athletics at the J, including T-ball, soccer, basketball, football, dance and gymnastics. We love spending summers at the pool and have engaged in many programs, ranging from parent-child classes to Shabbat dinners and Passover seders. The J is such an amazing place with awesome staff. I wish more people knew about all of the great programs offered and that one of the greatest features of the J is its flexibility, such as staying open on national holidays and offering childcare during holidays and snow days. I hope that the J will play as integral a role in my children’s and grandchildren’s lives as it has in mine. I aim to exhibit my gratitude for this institution and for all of those who help to make it what it is today. I also hope to demonstrate the importance of Tzedakah, charity, to my children. I hope that the J continues to grow and thrive as a place which embraces diversity and tolerance, while maintaining its Jewish origins and values. For us, the J really is a home away from home.

The Impact of the J Member Spotlight: Chad Wallis
M
y wife and I love to work out at the J. As a family – wife Sarah, son Charlie (12) and daughter Kate (10) – we love to spend summers at the pool swimming laps and lounging on the deck. Charlie and Kate have played in youth sports programs for years and Kate attends Camp Sabra each summer. Some of my favorite memories include attending Dad & I Weekend with Kate and winning a Youth Basketball league championship with Charlie. I don’t think people realize the full scope of what the J offers. It’s so broad and touches so many people, from Early Childhood to Adult Day, youth sports to group exercise classes. My family loves furthering education and health and I love seeing kids excel in sports and being given the chance to be competitive. It’s my sincere hope that The J continues to provide the outstanding resources which it does today and that the community realizes the importance of such a facility.

The J’s Fundraising Gala Wins Big
T
he J’la, the J’s annual fundraising gala, was a glittering opportunity for our friends, corporate and community partners, and the community-at-large to support the J’s efforts to raise money for scholarships. We provide nearly $500,000 in scholarships each year so people without financial means can take advantage of our programs. We were pleased to honor the J Associates, the J’s women’s auxiliary, at this year’s event. In their honor, we introduced the newly-named “J Associates Emerging Leader Award,” that will be awarded at our Annual Meeting each year. The Las Vegas-themed evening provided games of chance, entertainment by dueling pianos, and an exciting live auction that included trips and J-themed experiences, such as a weekend at Camp Sabra! We were thrilled and very grateful that our friends came together to help us net $190,000 that will benefit thousands in our community, as they will now be able to attend Day Camp, Camp Sabra, our Early Childhood Centers, Adult Day programs and more. Mark your calendars now for the 2018 J’la, November 17, when we will honor the Siwak Family. Thank you!

J Associates, the Perfect Partner
S
ince 1985, the J Associates has worked to advance the mission of the Jewish Community Center through fundraising efforts for scholarships, programs, equipment and supplies. The women’s auxiliary, now more than 500 members strong, supports the J through numerous activities that foster camaraderie, develop leadership and inspire Jewish values. The showpiece of their yearround activities was 2017’s Lip Sync Live, featuring popular music interpreted and lip synched by volunteers (friends of the J), and choreographed by celebrity coaches. Here are just a few examples of the impact of J Associates: • Funded a new cabin at Camp Sabra, enabling an additional 12 children to experience the life-shaping magic of Sabra each summer • Provided transportation to more than one-third of our Adult Day program participants – providing support to participants and their caregivers • Supported playground improvements for our Early Childhood Centers, giving hundreds of children a safe and developmentally-appropriate outdoor experience • Helped offset personal training expenses for adults with disabilities, making it affordable to learn healthy activities from nationally-certified fitness professionals • Provided scholarship support which allowed hundreds of children to attend J camps, Early Childhood programs and Nishmah Jewish programming for boys and girls For these and so many other reasons, we are grateful for the partnership and leadership of J Associates.
