New Leaf Metabolic Testing at the J

Receive the most advanced, individual and available workout!

Exercise Metabolic Testing Active metabolic testing measures how effectively your body uses oxygen and tells us when you’re burning fat, not sugar. This is the key to determining how hard and how long you need to work out. You will receive a customized cardio workout plan upon completion of the 15-minute, computer-aided test.

Resting Metabolic Testing Resting metabolic testing allows for more insight into how many calories need to be burned in order to attain goals of losing or gaining weight and maintaining normal body functions. Trainers can further customize a training program, especially when combined with the exercise testing. Subjects will be completely rested after a 10-12 hour fast and placed in a quiet room, relaxed and calm, wearing an oxygen mask for about 15 minutes. Hava Nagila (The Movie) Sunday, June 9 4pm It’s to music what the bagel is to food – “Hava nagila” translates to “Let Us Rejoice.” It’s a Jewish staple which has become a worldwide phenomenon. Performed by Bob Dylan, Elvis, Chubby Checker and many more international celebrities, follow the song on its journey from the shtetls of Europe to American simchas...even to baseball games! Featuring interviews with Harry Belafonte, Connie Francis and others. Documentary After the film, Klezundheit plays “Hava Nagila!” in center court.

Orchestra of Exiles Sunday, June 9 7pm Bronislaw Huberman was a Polish born (1882) violin prodigy. At 13, he brilliantly performed Brahms for Brahms. But Nazism transformed Huberman from artist to prophetic activist. Overcoming all barriers, Huberman rescued 1,000 Jewish exiles and brought them to Palestine to found a national orchestra. Documentary

It is No Dream: The Life of Theodore Herzl Monday, June 10 2pm Against all odds, a cosmopolitan Viennese playwright and journalist becomes the father of the state of Israel. Born to an assimilated family, Herzl had little connection to his Jewish heritage. While working as a newspaper reporter in Paris, he witnessed virulent anti-Semitism. Advocating for and protecting Jews evolved into an obsession to build a Jewish homeland. The film expertly marries vintage photos, newsreels, historical documents, and scholarly interviews. Documentary

Defiant Requiem Monday, June 10 5:30pm An emotional tribute to composer-director, Rafael “Rafi” Schächter, one of a corps of educators, artists, actors, writers and musicians who, despite Nazi deprivations at the Theresienstadt concentration camp, mounted robust spiritual resistance with a brimming schedule of cultural events. My Best Enemy

Monday, June 10 8pm Uriel is a Jewish divorced father of two who is also a slightly neurotic financier, as well as a professional gambler and hustler whose luck is running out. He is convinced that he has to bluff his way through life (and cards) to avoid suffering. His unexpected reunion with a one-time girlfriend helps him realize his destiny is in his own hands. Comedy

Wednesday, June 12 8pm Humor and the Holocaust make strange bedfellows. Inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterd. Victor Kaufmann is heir to the art fortune and the victim of a wounding betrayal when a childhood friend becomes an SS captain. Nazi buffoons, art forgeries, instances of mistaken identity, lucky breaks and narrow escapes sprout and multiply. Historical Fiction

Brothers

Through the Eye of the Needle: The Art of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz

Tuesday, June 11 2pm Should Orthodox Yeshiva students be compelled to serve in the Israeli army? Two brothers represent both sides of this controversial present-day dilemma. The conflict which arises between the two brothers reflects that of a society torn between its religious and political principles. Drama

Kaddish For A Friend Tuesday, June 11 5:30pm In a working class area of Berlin, fourteen-year-old Ali and his family are recent Palestinian immigrants. Still bearing resentment toward Jews, Ali joins a group of Muslim malcontents who vandalize the apartment of a feisty, elderly Russian-Jewish neighbor. Ali is caught by the police and must make amends to avoid going to jail. Inspired by real events, this exploration of trust, forgiveness, the alienation of youth and the loneliness of old age is a story of reconciliation and forgiveness. Drama

Fill the Void Tuesday, June 11 8pm Eighteen-year-old Shira, the youngest daughter of an UltraOrthodo family, dreams of being married to a promising young man. Everything changes when her sister tragically dies during childbirth, and Shira’s wedding is postponed. A new match is proposed between Shira and her older, widowed brother-inlaw. Will Shira give up her dreams and marry Yochay for the sake of her family? Drama

Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy Wednesday, June 12 2pm From the golden age of Gershwin and Rodgers & Hammerstein to Stephen Sondheim, Jule Styne and Lerner & Loewe, the rousing anthems and timeless musicals of Broadway amazingly were created almost exclusively by Jewish Americans. Illuminating interviews are interspersed with enduring performances from shows including, “Fiddler on the Roof,” The Producers,” “Funny Girl,” “Gypsy,” “Cabaret,” and “Wicked.” Documentary

Paris-Manhattan Wednesday, June 12 5:30pm There is the problem with Alice: blonde, winsome, successfully established in a career, smitten with jazz and Woody Allen, thirty-something and—single! By the sweet conclusion, Alice’s director-idol has turned up for a— You-will-be-surprised!— cameo appearance. And Alice has discovered that it is after all l’amour that makes the world go around. Romantic Comedy 30 Jewish Community Center Summer 2013

Thursday, June 13 2pm When the Jews of Mniszek, Poland, were deported by the Nazis, 15-year old Esther was determined to save herself and a younger sister by passing as Christian in the Polish countryside. She survived, married, emigrated to the States, raised two daughters and grew a family business. But eventually, in her untrained, naïf style, she found a way to share memory and losses in 36, lushly-detailed tapestries. Documentary Short Double feature with

Hitler’s Children What if your father or grandfather had been in Adolf Hitler’s inner circle, among the most notorious Nazis? This intelligent documentary ventures into the psychic, no-man’s land between revulsion and familial connection. The Israeli director artfully combines cinema verité (including singular and startling footage at modern day Auschwitz) with intimate and revelatory interviews given by descendants of top Nazis. Documentary

The Other Son Thursday, June 13 5:30pm During a crisis at an Israeli hospital, two newborn babies are accidentally switched. The truth only becomes known to Joseph Silberg from Tel Aviv and Yacine Al-Bezaaz from the West Bank when both boys turn 18. The families are upended, and there is pain and confusion. Is Joseph really Jewish? Will the wall and checkpoints forever divide sons, fathers, mothers and a mistrustful older brother? Drama

A.K.A. Doc Pomus Thursday, June 13 8pm “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “This Magic Moment,” “A Teenager in Love” and “Viva Las Vegas” are a few of the more than 1,000 songs written by Jerome Felder, better known as “Doc Pomus.” This inspiring tribute begins as the story of a young Jewish boy crippled by polio when he was only six. Even though confined to crutches and a wheelchair, Doc went on to pen the music of the baby boomer generation. Documentary
