The remarkable story of a 1731 Stradivarius violin once owned by Israeli Philharmonic founder Bronislaw Huberman. The instrument was stolen in 1936, while Huberman was performing on stage at Carnegie Hall, and it remained “lost” for almost 50 years. Jewish-American virtuoso, Joshua Bell, now plays the violin in concerts around the world. If you loved Orchestra of Exiles last year, you will be enthralled with The Return of the Violin. The Short Film Competition now in its fourth year soliciting new and established filmmakers to participate from middle school, high school, college and professionals. Films of any genre were welcomed. The theme for this year is Counting Your Blessings and winners were selected for content and execution of the theme by a juried panel of experts. The winning film will be featured on the Opening Day of the Jewish Film Festival and highlighted on the Jewish Film Festival website.

Hadeel is a young charismatic Israeli Arab woman who teaches Arabic in a Jewish primary school. Equal parts inspiring and heartbreaking, her story offers an unflinching glimpse of Israel in all of its beautiful– and at times excruciating–complexity.
A young radical Palestinian man, who is wounded during a failed suicide bombing of a synagogue, holds a holocaust survivor hostage in her apartment. The hostage tends to her captor’s injuries while both deal with issues of ideology, faith, freedom and oppression. As the police close in, the two victims learn about the power of compassion. Powerful and amazing performances by both leads!
After her mother’s death, Anne, a young film director, discovers an old family photo that throws her understanding of her parents into question. In a journey that stretches back from the 1980s to postwar France, Anne’s research reveals a dark family secret that intertwines an unexpected player with Anne’s own destiny. This semi-autobiographical period drama is a sumptuous tale of romance and suspense.
The son of a Winnipeg rabbi rises to become one of America’s greatest stand-up comics and TV directors. But David Steinberg’s irreverent take on religion was too hot for CBS, prompting the cancellation of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Plentiful clips of Steinberg’s hilarious performances and TV directing credits are paired in this film with stories from Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David and others.

A music professor is entrusted with a battered box excavated from the site of a former Nazi death camp. Inside the box is a photograph, unfinished sheet music and a letter. He makes a jarring discovery: he is actually the son of a Jewish musician. As a child he was entrusted to friends when his parents were sent away. He becomes obsessed with completing his father’s composition and to have it performed on the site of the former camp.

The true story of Jewish industrialist, Walter Süskind, who worked for the Jewish Council in Amsterdam during WWII. By playing a cat-and-mouse game with an SS officer, he organizes “labor-camp” transports for Jewish adults...while also managing to save almost 1,000 Jewish children from deportation. When the Nazi learns of Süskind’s “treachery,” Walter realizes he and his family are in grave danger.

Filled with fun, games, music, romance and happy endings, Cupcakes is a feelgood musical comedy about a group of friends who write a song that inadvertently becomes Israel’s entry in the Universong competition. The founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival and The Public Theater is profiled in this honest, in-depth film. Joe Papp brought us free Shakespeare in the Park, Hair and A Chorus Line, and nurtured many of America’s greatest playwrights, directors and actors. Learn about this complex personality through interviews with artists including Meryl Streep, Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen, Kevin Kline, and James Earl Jones.
Manya, a stubborn, independent Russian Jewish widow who dreads the thought of being moved into a home, is assigned a helper to prepare her home before Passover. Manya gets an odd surprise when Terrance, an African-American young man, shows up on her doorstep. Manya must make her infamous gefilte fish to prove her independence to her family, so she leaps out of her comfort zone and spends the day running errands and cooking with Terrence. Initially, Manya and Terrence get along like cats in a sack, but eventually, in spite of their equally stubborn and suspicious characters, they learn that help and support often comes from the most unexpected place.
