VOLUNTEER

HOST

Become a Maccabi Host! Hosting Myths: "I work full time and won’t have time to drive the athletes around during the day." No problem, drop your athletes off as early as 7:00am and pick them up after the evening events around 9:30pm. "I don’t have any kids at home." Athletes will be with other athletes all week. They just need a warm and welcoming place to call home for the week. "I have small children at home." Your small children will love getting to know these out-of-town athletes when they are with you. "I can’t be a tour guide to visiting athletes." The only time that you have to entertain is Wednesday evening – Host Family Night. This is a great time to get together with other Host Families to plan a fun evening. "I don’t have an extra bedroom." Many families open up beds by bunking their own children in one room for the week or by using air mattresses.

SUCCESS STORY____________________

Dawn Berry Credits Success to J Group Training Tell me about your family.

Fitness & Wellness

I’ll have been married to Doug Berry for 10 years in May. We were both born and raised in St. Louis. We met and started dating in high school. We’ve been together for 16 years and have two kids and a dog named Zoe.

How long have you been members of the J? We joined December 2013, so close to two-and-a-half years ago.

Why did you decide to join the J versus another fitness center? We moved to Chesterfield and tried Lifetime Fitness. It felt big and overwhelming. I felt lost and like I was only a number. I quit after only three months. We joined the J [a few months later] because we really liked the community feel. We loved that it was more than just a weight lifting center with babysitting. It was clean and large, but not too large. It seemed very values based, even though we ourselves aren’t Jewish. It was a place we felt safe and comfortable leaving our young children. We loved that the J had pools, offered camps and had other offerings rather than just a simple fitness center. It seems obvious that the J is constantly keeping the place up to date with new machines and new paint. It is a fresh and happy place.

What led you to the J’s fitness center? I had two difficult pregnancies…and started to develop unhealthy eating habits. After failing countless times to get into a fitness routine at home, my husband and I decided to join the J. Initially I started to work out and take a couple of classes. As I encountered stressful events I found myself making excuses to not make it into the gym, soon falling off track again. Two things happened that helped me get where I am today; 1) J Member Batya Wertmann who encouraged me to come check out a small group training session with [Assistant Fitness Manager and personal trainer] Andy Hayes; and 2) I started to eat healthier by joining Weight Watchers.

How did you get involved with group training? I was intimidated to begin group training, but since the J offered a free trial for some of their group training classes, I decided to give it a try. I once was very fit, having run four half-marathons, played multiple sports and lifted weights. But around the summer of 2014, I wasn’t working out at all. It felt so good to be back in an athletic situation, but I felt anything but athletic. I had no strength and no stamina. I had a really fun time 34 Jewish Community Center

Summer 2016

though in that class. It was so interactive and challenging that I felt the hour go by in a flash. The laughs and conversation helped to break up the challenges of the exercises Andy planned. The women and Andy asked me to join their group after that first session. I knew I needed a group dynamic to help me stay accountable and to start enjoying working out again. Knowing I had paid for training sessions, plus I now had a trainer and workout partners/friends who were looking forward to and expecting me to come, were the main and most significant reasons I stayed committed to working out. Andy provides so much diversity in each session that it is exciting to see what he comes up. And since the exercises are constantly changing, our bodies are consistently challenged. I have definitely gotten significantly stronger. Our group has wildly different personality types and personal goals, but Andy works well with each of us and our unique situations and goals. He takes our comments to heart and listens to what we love, like and dislike, then makes appropriate changes. Truly, I give this class so much credit for my results because it is the main reason I have been so consistent for almost two years. My family and I have made so many friendships through the J, especially through this personal training group.

Have you achieved your goals? My goal is to weigh 135-140 lbs, my pre-baby weight. I’ve always wanted to be strong over skinny. I’m still working hard to get to my goal weight, but I feel super strong and am get better every week. I feel like I can keep up with my kids and have so much more energy than before. I see improvements in my physical performances in classes too. It’s empowering to feel so strong as a female. I take pride in my athleticism and performance. I always leave the gym in a better mood to start my day and feeling pride in what I have accomplished. I feel so much more comfortable in my own skin.

What is your current weekly fitness routine? I try to workout 5-6 days a week. I don’t need each of those days to be super intense. I find it fun just to get into the gym, connect with friends and to get a sweat on.

How has this experience impacted your life? During this challenging time in my life [children, ankle surgery, day-to-day stress], I could have taken two different paths. Andy and the group helped me continue down the healthier of the two, by continuing working out even when others might have quit. It has been truly transformational. I feel like a whole new person. My husband loves the changes he sees in me. My kids love my energy and strength. I love those changes I see in me too!

SUCCESS STORY____________________

Once he began paying attention to food choices and portion sizes, he soon realized that late-night eating had become a real issue. Identifying one’s stumbling blocks is the first step toward taking control and making changes. Since it had been difficult for him to visually recognize his current size, the camera became a valuable tool. Says Johnathan, “Taking photos every two weeks really helped me stay motivated because I was able to begin to not only feel the change but see it!”

Revelation Leads to Big Changes Habits do indeed die hard; and the longer we engage in them, the more they tend to become woven into the fabric of our lives. Receiving the proverbial “wake-up call” at a young age may be difficult, yet it can pave the way toward longevity and quality of life.

During any major lifestyle change, the coupling of food with exercise delivers a powerful punch. “It’s the combination of doing both in the right amount in order to see a true transformation and get the results you want.” Prior to the new meal plan, Johnathan invested time in learning which nutrients his body did and did not require. “It was awesome starting to understand my body better, and truly knowing what I should and should not put into it.” He also became a mainstay at the Staenberg Family Complex, taking advantage of the J’s fitness center.

Fitness & Wellness

Johnathan Brose is a shining example of just such a scenario. In his early 20’s, Johnathan had slipped into a sedentary lifestyle. At 285 pounds, he had no energy, “I was always sleepy and wasted away my days doing nothing. I was not happy with myself.” It took two years of dedication to eating clean, exercising and focusing on good health for Johnathan to lose 115 pounds while adding a significant amount of muscle.

Along with the impressive weight loss, he has increased his endurance and taken on new physical challenges. He is now “ready to see how this new body can work!” By Cathleen Kronemer, NSCA-CPT, Certified Health Coach

Getting started After some time, Johnathan no longer paid attention to his size 48 and XXL clothing. While people should be applauded for being comfortable in their own skin, there eventually comes a day of reckoning, especially when one’s health is in question. One day, a friend bluntly told him he was fat and overweight. Johnathan recalls, “Until that point, I never actually saw myself as fat.” Taking this comment to heart, he calculated his body mass index (BMI), only to discover he was significantly over the normal range, rendering him at risk for multiple serious health issues. Johnathan realized he “… had to make a change if [he] wanted to see the world and all the plans that God has for [him].”
