Dear Members and Friends,

Aquatics............................................................. 5

As summer approaches, I look forward to the laughter (and little bit of craziness) from the children who will make lifetime memories at our J Day Camps. As school ends, summer plans are soon to be set in motion and the J truly becomes a second home to so many. We hope you feel that way when you enter and see a familiar face or a welcoming smile. Among our core values is to welcome the stranger with open arms. At the J, we welcome everyone, knowing you will find something to fulfill your mind, body or soul. It is our hope that you see the J as your ‘second” home, a place in which you can learn, recreate, see friends and relax.

Early Childhood................................................ 12

Creating community is what we do every day at the J. I see it in our fitness centers, pools and in the early childhood hallways. Every dynamic speaker, play or author talk presents a new opportunity to connect to others who share your interests. In the following pages are many great reasons to come and connect; a new weight loss program, basketball leagues, swim lessons to name just a few.

Fitness Success Story..................................... 35

So please look through this program guide and find the ways that you would like to connect. Don’t be a stranger. If you don’t see it here, please let me know . . lwittels@jccstl.org. We are ready to work with you so you can find a reason to come to the J…often. On behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff, we look forward to seeing you at the J.

Early Childhood Center Early childhood is a crucial stage for a child’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. It’s when children need high quality care and learning experiences. The J Early Childhood Center provides quality care and education that embraces the development of your child – mind, body and soul.

Starting as young as six weeks, our infant and toddler classrooms provide a caring and nurturing environment. Our professional educators, along with our families, provide high-quality, individualized, responsive and stimulating experiences that will influence your child’s growth and learning experience.

Pre-Kindergarten__________

5 years (Pre-K) Our teachers deliver positive learning experiences to help children’s intellectual, social and emotional development. We help children build cognitive skills, preparing them for success in multiple areas, including reading, math, science and academics. Areas of development also include character, social and emotional growth, gross-motor skills and executive functioning.

"The ECC is truly a gem. We came to the community from out of state and were welcomed with open arms. Both our daughters have enjoyed fun, engaging, and stimulating classroom environments, and participated in many of the wonderful extracurriculars offered through the J. We're so grateful for the amazing network of faculty, family, and teachers we've met through school, many of whom have become good friends." - Gillian P., Two-time ECC Parent • Accredited by the Missouri Accreditation & licensed by the Missouri Dept. of Health and Senior Services • Uses the Project Construct® and Conscious Discipline® curriculums- teaching children the skills that foster learning and social-emotional growth • Swimming, sports, yoga, intergenerational connections, and more

I now know that I was extremely lucky to have landed such an awesome trainer [Paul Mueller] who I work so well with, on the first try. I didn’t know what to expect with my first sessions but Paul always made me feel successful at whatever he asked of me. The J: When did you start training with Paul and how often?

LERA OHLSON IS ACHIEVING AMAZING LOWS WITH J FITNESS

Fitness & Wellness

Inches, weight and running times fall with inspiring training results

Lera Ohlson joined the J at the urging of a best friend and a little over two years later, she’s more than hit her stride. An avid runner and now gym regular, Lera has elevated her excitement about life while reducing inches, pounds and minutes – while racing! With the assistance of certified personal trainer Paul Mueller, Lera continually exceeds her own expectations and can’t wait to see what’s in store for her down the road. Here’s a look at Lera’s success! The J: How long have you been a member of the J? Lera Ohlson: I have been a member of the J just over two years. The J: Why did you decide to join the J versus other gyms/fitness centers? LO: My best friend and her family were members and had been telling me about it and how awesome everything was, and it meant I could attend some classes with her and not be totally on my own. It didn’t hurt that the J is practically around the corner from my work so I would have little excuse not to show up. I had been a member of a big box gym several years ago and never did anything other than the treadmill or elliptical and one class. The J: Please describe your circumstances that led you to the J’s fitness center? LO: I had made the decision that I was ready to get fit and healthy about a year prior to joining the J. I had made changes to my eating habits but was ready to ramp things up and include exercise. My best friend had been inviting me for several years to join her at the J but it had always fallen on deaf ears. The key was that I was ready. I remembered her invitation and looked into joining. I knew that I wanted to do more than just hop on to some cardio equipment and I knew that I wanted some accountability. The J: Why did you choose to seek out a personal trainer? Had you worked with a one before?

Summer 2017

LO: I started working out with Paul right away when my transformation began. I had joined the J prior to a week-long visit to my parents in Southern California and upon returning I started my new training regimen. I jumped right in with three mornings a week and within a month I added two evening classes. I kept up that schedule for the most part for the next two years. Recently I dialed back and only work out with him two mornings a week along with the two evening classes and do one morning on my own. Doing one morning on my own is hard as there isn’t any accountability; no one is expecting me to show up so it is easier to have an excuse to not show up and work hard.

“Lera has a competitive spirit that I play on in order to push her. She purchased a MyZone tracker in February which has intensified the competition between her and a couple others in class with trackers. She is always striving to be number one on the leader board.” – Personal Trainer Paul Mueller The J: Did working with a personal trainer meet or exceed your expectations? How so? LO: It so much exceeded my expectations! Paul was able to gage abilities and set me up for success. He knew when to push me a little harder or challenge me with heavier weights or more reps. He knew before I did when my body was ready to be pushed more. There are times that I have to remind myself that he knows my abilities (better than I do it seems) and he won’t ask me to do something that I can’t do successfully. When I went on my first vacation seven months after joining the J and working with Paul I was so worried about skipping a few days. I didn’t want to “fall off the workout wagon.” Paul pointed out several things that I could do with just my body weight prior to heading out of town. These tools enabled me to enjoy the vacation AND stay on top of my new fit lifestyle.

The J: Can you talk about your love of running races and relating it to your training? LO: In the year prior to joining the J my friend had also been inviting me to join her and her husband in participating in some races, 5Ks mostly, and I finally joined her in some. Prior to joining the J and working with Paul I had participated in 10 races. I walked 90% of them the entire way and wanted to see about improving my times. Since working with Paul I have competed in 22 more events/races – each one I have gotten a better time/ faster pace than the last. I put this down to being overall healthier and stronger. It has been a different way to measure my fitness – how much am I running or jogging during the event as opposed to walking. I am now to the point that now, depending on the length of the race, I will jog or run 80 to 90% of it!

The J: What goals or accomplishments did you set and then achieve? Did you accomplish more than you thought? LO: Originally my goal was to not quit for the first six-week session, then the second six weeks, and so on. I wanted to lose weight and gain muscle. I was very happy that I had taken measurements prior to beginning my transformation because there were months that I only lost a few pounds but I lost double digits in the inches department. The inches were practically melting away because I had gotten my eating under control prior to beginning training and that enabled my hard work at the gym to show. In the first nine months I lost 30 pounds and nearly 55 inches! I couldn’t have been happier.

The J: What other fitness opportunities do you utilize at the J (group ex classes, signature training, etc.)? LO: I regularly attend Kettlebell on both Tuesdays and Thursday evenings and am thinking I may add in another style class. Last summer [2016] prior to an ankle injury I was going to a Saturday morning Zumba class which was fun and got the blood moving in a completely different way than my usual workouts.

“She has committed herself to lifestyle changes both inside and outside the gym staying focus mainly on the inches, not her weight which continue to melt away. I'm proud of the effort and dedication she has to making herself a stronger healthier person and is an inspiration to anyone she meets! I'm proud to be a part of her journey and I am thankful she has allowed me the opportunity to work closely with her.” – Personal Trainer Paul Mueller The J: Do you have any other comments to encourage others to start their own fitness success stories? LO: If there is a class or trainer that you have tried and it didn’t fit, try something else, you may click if you try another instructor or class. You may be happily surprised that you really love working out in a way you never expected. Over the past two years I learned that the trainers are all wonderful. I like how even trainers I haven’t personally worked with greet me as they pass while I am working out and provide encouragement.

Fitness & Wellness

Early on I remembered I had coworkers doing the Fight for Air Climb (40 flights of stairs at the Met Building) in April. I had recently started with Paul and he offhandedly said that next year I was going to do it. I laughed at the thought because I couldn’t see myself ever participating, and I was secretly terrified that I would fail. When the next year rolled around I reminded him about it. He was super encouraging regarding my fitness and how I could do the event. He was right, of course, and I participated. With my improved health I beat the times of my coworkers! That was a very proud moment. This year I shaved time off each flight going from 10:13 finish time to 9:59! I plan on doing the event in 2018 and shaving some more seconds (if not some minutes) off my time yet again.

This year for my birthday I got a MyZone [Fitness Tracker]. I am enjoying the bit of competition with one of the ladies who also trains in the morning. The tracker is proving to me in a different way that I can do more than I think I can.

Prior to joining the J I had already participated in a few 5k’s and my first 10k (attached a picture of me from this race which was days before beginning working with Paul) but I wanted more, and to continue getting stronger and finishing races faster and not hurting for as long afterwards.

I wasn’t sure what my final goals would be, I still don’t know… but I totally love how strong I am now. When I began Kettlebell [Group Exercise] I started with the ten pound kettlebell, moved to the 15lb bell and now I use a 25lb for the majority of class and occasionally Paul will challenge me to use a 30lb bell, which I do successfully! The J: What goals do you still have and what are you doing to work towards them? LO: My current goals are to simply keep going and remember that I can do so much more now than when I began and I don’t want to ever go back. I want to continue bettering my race times. I would love to actually run a full race (I currently interval run), and just overall get stronger. I really love that I can do so much that I couldn’t before.
