CIM Opera Theater brings to the stage three operatic incarnations of plays by William Shakespeare including the rarely performed Macbeth by CIM’s first director, Ernest Bloch. Swiss-born Ernest Bloch was the Cleveland Institute of Music’s founding musical director from 1920 – 1925. A prolific composer, many of Bloch’s works draw heavily on his Jewish heritage. Bloch’s father had at one stage intended to become a rabbi, and the young Ernest had a strong religious upbringing; as an adult he felt that to write music that expressed his Jewish identity was “the only way in which I can produce music of vitality and significance.” • For information visit cim.edu/events

“THE BREATH OF EVERY LIVING THING:” Zoocephali in the Hammelburg Mahzor and the Limits of Alterity
Keynote address at the Vagantes Conference on Medieval Studies Presented by Case Western Reserve University
Friday, March 25 @ 5:15 pm
In Person
Cleveland Museum of Art 11150 East Boulevard, Cleveland
The Hammelburg Mahzor, a Jewish festival book completed in the middle of the fourteenth century—in the wake and on the eve of some of the worst pogroms in medieval Europe—is a striking manuscript. Animals, hybrids, and mythological beasts roam across its pages with bursts of color, given free rein to interact with the text. The book’s most remarkable feature is the inclusion of carefully curated zoocephalic figures: humans with beastly and bestial heads. The lecture will explore the semiotics and phenomenology of this alterity and suggest that its presence lies at the intersection of language, philosophy, theology, and history. • For information visit vagantesconference.org
