AQUATIC TERRITORIALITY Exploring the Future and Potentials of Alternative Urbanization with the 9 Dash Context Site // South China Sea Capstone thesis // Sep 2016 - Dec2016
Aquatic territoriality is a conceptual critique project that criticises the conventional understanding of water that related to territoriality. The project starts from the research about the territoriality discourses between land and water that explored the conventional way to discover territory is to read maps but actually, water is only a piece of colour and it doesn't mean anything on it. That's the reason why there are many territorial disputes in relating to water because it is empty on maps and people start to claiming water area on maps. With the analysis the South China Sea situation, it is found that the power of the nine-dash line is incredible. It is not simply a territorial claim on the map, the way of claiming by a specific type of line and the actual size of each dash on the map is large and in monster scale. Each dash can be a state or even a mega-system of a new continent.

8O HEADING The 8O heading will be the essential equipment in future aquatic city. The 8O heading can maintain the production of oxygen for human.
HAZARD TO HOPE The moment of hazard facing would be a hope in future in water. The infrastructure could use the dynamic of the water environment to generate huge amount of energy under natural hazard.
POSSIBILITY OF WAVE Wave and current are the big element to generate self-sustainable power that supply the whole city. It is hoped that to supply the energy for the surface world as well.
UNDER CITY The future aquatic city will be inside the water, some of them are hiding behind the tall seamount. The natural submarine landscape as a border to define cities.
VERTICAL MOVEMENT This scenario conceptually shows how people bring the living communities from the surface to submarine.
LIVING BUBBLE There munt be a common language in the aquatic urbanism and that will be the living bubble. That is a aquatic architecture that contain communities . The living bubble can move to different infrastructure and deliever to different systems. 03
SUB-BORDER An official governemnt submarin border to define zones. This is a dystopia scenario that people can’t live with the concept of common. The form of border is a land-based thinking and it should be in other form and language.
ORGANIC WAR Another dystopis scenario shows the war condition inside the sea. It is a metaphor for the future that people start to think infrastructure and city in organic way and try to get familiar to the marine environment and organism.
ARTI-NATURAL It is hard to define natural and artificial in future aquatic city. Even if there is a submarine war, people can't really realise if their enemy is a real big fish or not.
This project explores the future, potential and complexity of aquatic urbanism with the nine-dash context which if it has been physicalized or to develop. The project offers the new language of architecture, city and symbol of the future development of water. It is a moment for people to awaken awareness and rethink possibility of water, to explore the possibility of aquatic urbanism and alternative urbanisation with the nine-dash context.
04
404 NOT FOUND CITY Hidden City . Sub-territorialization . Develop in Secret
It is a great opportunity to think about the secret of the sea. To explores the future, potential and complexity of aquatic urbanism with the nine-dash context which if it has been physicalized or to develop. It is a moment for people to awaken awareness and rethink possibility of water, to explore the possibility of aquatic urbanism and alternative urbanisation with the nine-dash context. The 9 dash scenarioes offer messages for city today and bring new thinking, form and language of architecture and city and symbol of the future development of water.
In fact there are many advanced technologies that can show different levels of marine information, but most of them are independent and all of the data are separate in different specific system regard to different aim and services. Even most of them are not be named or discovered yet. The way of cartography is not well presenting things and relationships in water. Aquatic-territorialization will be a sub-territorialization that beyond the observation speed of human. It would be a hidden urbanism that develop in secret.

THE 8O APRON
THE ABYSSAL BUFFER DRAGON
Oxygen Approach . Charging . Aquatic Infrastructure
Military Based . Swimming City . Moving Zone
Human would need the 8O Apron to make sure that they have enough oxygen to process their aquatic life. The 8O Apron is a system that forms by aquatic infrastructures that provide oxygen charging with human and each other. The system is designed to connect with the head equipment that can offer mobile oxygen supply. The scenario shows that human would be piles of movement that rely on an infrastructure. It is a metaphor for the future aquatic living is similar to the movement of fish. Fish swim in groups and perch in coral reef together.
06
The abyssal buffer dragon is a moving mega buffer city that mainly transports the living bubbles to different aquatic basins. The center of the body is a tunnel that send submarine and military facilities for specific conditions and needs. The legs of the dragon contain living bubbles that for submarine human living .The living bubbles will be a key elements of the aquatic territoriality and symbol of future development. The organic and dynamic forms of architecture and city will be the new language of urbanism in the earth. All infrastrustures and systems in aquatic world are dynamic and moveable. Urbanism and urbanization will develop in mega movements.
AQUATIC EVOLUTIONARY BASIN
THE RED DRAGON ANNIVERSARY
Aquatic basin . Liquid skin . Growing Aquatic City
Restorative Identity . Eco-Sustainability . Aquatic Economy
Aquatic basins are vertical systems design for aqua-human habitation. Each living bubbles will bring to the evolutionary basin by the buffer dragon. It is a huge coral reef structure that contains various submarine communities. Instead of the deliver way by buffer dragon, the bubbles can directly send vertically from the floating settlement to the evolutionary basin. The core of the form of reef is a mega-core that contain different kinds of essential facilities. It is an organic core that combines with different functions, each organ has its functions.
The Red Dragon is the god and guardian of South China Sea in China also called “Hung Shing” or “ Nam Hoi Kwong Li Hung Shing Tai Wong ”. People believe the dragon king can protect them and against natural disasters on many occasions. They held a festival on the 13th day of the 2nd month in Chinese calendar to worship him as the God of Southern Sea. This mythological system is a presentation of submarine festival that shows a new form of ritual in water. Maybe it is an utopia of China, but it is also a hypothesis for future submarine cultural and civilization.
07
BLUE-GREEN ECONOMY
RAINBOW IN THE SEA
Restorative Identity . Eco-Sustainability . Aquatic Economy
Marine Hive . Overpass. Aquatic Trestle
Aquatic economy would be Blue-Green Economy which “Blue” represent the methodology of aquatic farming and “Green” represent the respect to the water environment. This form of economy is running by a big vertical submarine garden that stitch by seaweed. The cultivation hubs inside the seaweed structures are 10 meters containers with scallops and oysters inside and surrounded by seaweed. It is a garden for marine organisms to pass through and stay with it. It is aim to restore and flourish marine eco-systems. Building by restoring and learning from the nature of the aquatic environment. Every human being has to encourage a living concept of living with water rather than live in water.
The rainbow in the sea is the scenario of a way how aqua-people restore the damaged marine eco-system. It is a marine hive that can rebuild coral reef system not just in shallow water area but also can be locate above deep water area. The structure can let coral reefs live anywhere in the basin. It is a suspending habitation for fishs.
08
This submarine structure is a big ramp that connecting to the floating settlements, a subway that allows people to pass through the water surface
DESALINATE ESSENTIAL
AQUATIC HOBERMAN
Furnisher . Settlement Core . Aquatic Filter
Restorative Identity . Eco-Sustainability . Aquatic Economy
The desalination core is a fresh water furnisher . It is a core system that in-between the water surface and submarine environment that provide drinkable water by evaporation. It is a muti-connect infrastructure that can co-processing with the 8O Oxygen Apron and Vertical Submarine Garden. This core is the launcher to bring living bubbles drink-able water. The desalination core and the 8O Oxygen Apron held the daily essentials of human which is water and air.
Aquatic Hoberman is a form of growing structure in submarine development. This is an expanding growth for the living bubbles. The structure of the expandability is inspired by Chuck Hoberman that can offer huge capacity and mobility for future development in water for the AQUATIC EVOLUTIONARY BASIN. The expandability shows the scale and prosperity of living bubbles. This aquatic-urban system is the root of the aquatic living apron, the core element that forms the AQUATIC EVOLUTIONARY BASIN.

In the future, Hong Kong is full of high modern buildings. The ground environment was eaten by the consuming activities. The only space that people can live without money is home. It is possible to develop a sky level community. Public spaces will have a new value and level in the concrete jungle. Public space can be an interior and in-between space inside or between buildings. The Utopiland is a neo-public interior space that aim to arouse the SPONTANEITY of public space using. It is also a way to continue the old district and street stall scenario in a new spatial level. It is an urban forest connecting different root circulation that reach stalls and public. New public furnitures are designed to let old stall owners can get a great integration. A set of modular units can let people create their territories even stay on the beams. 25

Urban Heritage Inheritance
URBAN GEAR Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong
After 10 years, the urban redevelopment project is still running rapidly and go more faster. Many ancientry districts have become the target of the project and they are facing the “Original Disappearance problem. However, the original face of ancientry districts is the true heritage of Hong Kong. Nowadays, teenagers are born and living in a modern environment and less care to the ancientry objects and district. The ancientry district is disappearing both in their mind and living environment. My design is to create surprise in old district and aware the existence of old. To let people especially teenagers to enjoy and learn the culture of old district in a new level. The relations between outdoor and interior space in old district can be entertaining. Benefit teenagers from celebrating the heritage of Hong Kong.
