Creed We Believe: That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise That government should be of laws rather than of men That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality And that service to humanity is the best work of life The JCI Mission To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. The JCI Vision To be the leading global network of young active citizens.

Editor’s Message Community is a powerful word. Not all communities rally around an event. Some rally around a cause. Community becomes even more powerful when it includes the entire community. When all members of the community pull together for a united cause, the power becomes unlimited. The change, or transformation, that occurs from the entire community is something greater than just what a small group of the community or an individual can achieve. We all have something to contribute. I am pleased to present Issue 1 of our 2018 newsletter. This issue we can clearly see a trend emerging: different local organisations with different personalities coming together for a cause. Hope you enjoy looking back at what has happened over the past quarter. Don’t be shy and come join our next activity or project. You won’t be disappointed!

President’s Message Do you remember the story about the elderly father who gave each of his three sons a stick and told them to break them? Without breaking a sweat, they each broke the stick. But when given a bunch of sticks tied together, they could not break it. During this first three months of 2018, teamwork and unity is what made us strong, and enabling us to execute projects successfully. Inline with this year’s presidential theme, “Beyond Borders”, we hope to grow and be able to reach greater heights, not only through teamwork within our chapter, but by working together with other chapters through joint organized projects and collaborations. “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much”

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. Our governments have a plan to save our planet…it’s our job to make sure they stick to it. The Global Goals are only going to work if we fight for them and you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. We believe the Goals are only going to be completed if we can make them famous.

Chinese New Year Party

Sabah Women & Children Hospital Project: Chinese New Year Party Sabah Women & Children Hospital Date: 3rd March 2018 Organising Chairperson: Kaven Chung

We believe that happiness and health are closely linked. Researchers have shown that optimism, quality of life & satisfaction, and other positive psychological attributes can do wonders for patients’ recovery and healing. While hospitals provide the doctors, medicine, equipment and treatment to the patients to make them better but how well they heal also depends on their mental state of mind. This together with the Ahli Lembaga Pelawat, JCI KK co-organised the Chinese New Year for the patients of Sabah Women and Children Hospital,Likas. Our aim was to create a fanfare out of Chinese New where we would endeavour to bring a little of the colour, sights and sounds of Chinese New Year to the patients. This event has been an ongoing effort by the Ahli Lembaga Pelawat for the past 11 years and this celebration has now become a running tradition for them. JCI KK is honoured to be part of this tradition.

Traditionally, Chinese New Year is celebrated as a family affair, a time to return to your roots, and one of thanksgiving. It is celebrated as a spring festival when children return home to their parents for the family reunion. It is a time of happiness, cheer and fun. A favourite time of the year for the young and old alike; a time when family members strive to be with their loved and dear ones; a time to usher out the old year and welcome the new, with great festivities and merrymaking.

56th Installation and Awards Ceremony Project: 56th Installation and Awards Ceremony Date: 3rd March 2018

56th Installation and Awards Ceremony was held on 3rd March 2018 (Saturday) at Sutera Marina & Country Club. JCIKK celebrates 56 years of youth leadership in the State. The Installation and Award ceremony graced by Yang Berhormat Datuk Ir Edward Yong Oui Fah, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister. Miss Daphne Lo was installed as 2018 President with the Presidential Theme “Beyond Borders”.

Organising Chairperson: Regina Ngu

During YB Datuk’s speech he noted that JCI is an organisation which plays an important role in preparing the young generations of today to become the future leaders of tomorrow through its various training programs, individual development and community-based activities, management opportunities and business networking. With such an extensive network, members will be able to gain access to limitless opportunities to build themselves up as well as being able to create positive changes to the nation and to the community. He future reiterated that, leadership is about the ability to inspire people from all walks of life around a common purpose; a higher purpose even. In this challenging environment, we have to constantly equip ourselves with new skills and stay abreast with current trends so as to adapt along with the rest of the world. He said “This is an important aspect because whatever policies and initiatives as well as the provisions set aside by the government for the youth, it would not attain its goal without the support, involvement and commitment from the youth themselves.”

Save Our Ocean Project: Save Our Ocean Date: 4th March 2018 Jointly organised with: JCI Luyang

“Save Our Ocean” is a flagship project by JCI Luyang. JCIKK went beyond and connected our sisterchapter, JCI Manila, whom have a similar project, “Sea of Life”.The fastest way towards a solution is to share resources, never be keep knowledge to yourself, it is meant to be shared. Coral Planting is no longer just for licensed divers. The Borneo Reef World Pontoon enables non divers to also contribute towards the rehabilitation of damaged coral reefs in Kota Kinabalu Sabah.

Do your sunscreen contains OXYBEN-

ZONE?

OXYBENZONE alters coral DNA,

making them more susceptible to bleaching, where the coral expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn completely white. Without the algae, the coral losses its major source of food and becomes exposed to diseases that may be potentially fatal. A drop of OXYBENZONE potentially contaminates SIX and a HALF OLYMPIC-SIZED pool.

CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY, SAVE OUR OCEAN! Staghorn Coral (Acropora Cervicornis) Status : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED Population reduction of 80% in 30 years due to diseases, climate changes and HUMAN FACTORS. Distribution : Florida Keys, the Bahamas, the Caribbean island, the Great Barrier Reef, and SABAH

Wheelchair Charity Run visitation to people in need

Project: Wheelchair Charity Run Date: 17th March 2018 Jointly organised with: JCI Penampang JCI Lintas

A paralysed septuagenarian here is now living in relative comfort thanks to a group of enterprising and selfless youngsters. Joseph Juanis Miat, 75, suffered a mishap two months ago while in Donggongon town near here and has since been left a paraplegic. His only relative, younger brother Conrad, 68, decided to move Joseph to his own house in Kampung Madsiang here – but the facilities proved to be inadequate. Conrad, who was assisted by his wife and three grown children in taking care of his brother, was concerned over the latter’s situation. But that’s when the group of youngsters stepped in. The 25 youth – from the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Penampang, Lintas and Kota Kinabalu; Gen Y; Lions Club of Kota Kinabalu Centennial; and United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut organisation (Upko) Natural Disasters Bureau – had heard of Joseph’s plight, and resolved to help him. Together, they helped build an attachment to Conrad’s house – a room on the ground floor for Joseph, complete with a reclineable bed and other necessities. Chairman of Gen Y, Douglas Valentine, said each group member chipped in to finance the project, and together with donations, they managed to collect about RM10,000 to build the room.
