FOREWORD Guest Of Honour - Chief Minister of Sabah YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj Aman Assalamualaikum and greetings to everyone. This year marks the 53rd year of the formation of Malaysia. The formation of this great country came not without its fair share of challenges, but thanks to the sacrifices and commitment of our founding fathers, Malaysia came into being in 1963. Challenges indeed as a new nation, we grappled with basic development shortages. Thankfully, with the ingenuity of our forefathers, we were able to tackle those problems and to move forward as a sovereign nation. 53 years on, Malaysia has indeed experienced astounding progress throughout the width and breadth of our Country. In order to achieve developed status, Malaysia can ill afford to sit on her laurels. There are many things that need to be done. For Vision 2020 to be realised, it is important for the young generation to understand that the key to Malaysia’s success lies in the unity of culturally diverse Malaysians. We should be grateful that the relative peace and harmony enjoyed in Malaysia has, and continues to serve us all well. Again, our forefathers deserve much recognition for laying down our founding principles of moderation, accommodation and understanding as enshrined in the Federal Constitution. Malaysia is truly unique, and perhaps one of the few countries in the world that is home to a multitude of cultures, faiths and peoples in one place that are peaceful and progressive. In so many other countries, an abundance of cultures existing in close proximity to one another breeds a development of conflict. Malaysia, on the other hand has only realised strength from this unique trait, and continues to receive much admiration from such nations who suffer from ever deepening cultural rifts. Of course our years of Nationhood have seen irresponsible parties attempt to threaten cultural harmony via provocative statements that, in some instances, have threatened our unity and peaceful existence. As a nation with modern vision we must maintain a united approach to protect our diversity, for without it, Malaysia stands to lose her greatest asset. ‘The Art to Nation Building’ program is timely in its efforts, and should be supported by all as it allows for the inculcation of patriotic spirit amongst school children. As future leaders of this country, our children need to be taught the value of understanding, accommodation and acceptance. It is never too late to encourage our young to commemorate the formation of Malaysia through their own creative imagination and unique personal experience. With that, I would like to congratulate the organisers of this programme on their efforts and commitment to drive forward our collective feeling of Nationhood and the concept of 1Malaysia. Of course, to all the contestants, especially the winners and their parents, well done for realising the value of your participation in this competition, and ultimately for your part in communicating through art, visual representations of Malaysia’s distinctive diversity. Wishing you all the best in your endeavours.

FOREWORD Organising Chairlady Dr. Pamela Yong Malaysia will this year celebrate its 53rd year of Nationhood. Few can deny the explosive growth and development we as a nation have achieved in those short 53 years. As Malaysians we realise the beauty of a nation as multicultural and diverse as ours, and we continue to live in peace and harmony, whilst enjoying economic development in the process. But what of today’s young generation, born into a relatively developed Malaysia, one so vastly different from that known by their parents and grandparents? What of their views on nationhood, patriotism, loyalty to country, and their overall sense of awareness and respect of cultural diversity? The Society of Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS), in collaboration with the Sabah State Education Department, the Federation of Sabah Chinese Women Associations (FCWS), and JCI Kota Kinabalu, aim to engage with our youth, and explore Nationhood through the eyes of young Sabahans in an art competition so named ‘Art of Nation Building’. The aims and objectives of this initiative were to cultivate a sense of nationhood through art, and to make children aware of racial diversity, ethnicity and culture within Malaysian society. Importantly as well, we wanted to encourage patriotism and instil loyalty into the hearts of young people, by creating awareness on national values through the expression of art. Art education helps in the holistic development of a child, and plays an important role in children’s character formation as they learn different key values through their work. Creating a piece of art takes self-discipline, much perseverance and persistence, and to do it well shows character and imparts patience and resilience in the child. In tapping into the imaginations of young artists by encouraging them to create very personal, thought-provoking, graphical representations of their visions of Malaysia, we believe we have met these aims, and I am most delighted that today we are able to share the visions of a group of very proud Malaysian children. I am extremely grateful for the assistance rendered by all three co-organisers of this event. Clearly their efforts have resulted in a very successful event that has seen no less than 5000 entrants, spanning the width and breadth of Sabah. Moreover, I would like to express my gratitude to the schooling community across the state for their support of this programme, and of course to the parents, for the encouragement they give their children at home. My congratulations to all the winners, and to the participants I say Thank You, and well done on producing such wonderful artwork!

FOREWORD Sabah State Education Department Director Datuk Jame Alip I on behalf of Sabah State Education Department would like to congratulate Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS), Federation of Chinese Women Sabah (FCWS) and Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu for successfully organizing the state wide art competition with the theme “Hari Jadi Malaysia” which was held over the month of July and August involving students from Upper Primary (Years 4, 5 and 6) and Lower Secondary (Forms 1, 2 and 3) and Upper Secondary (Forms 4, 5 and 6) in Sabah. The response was astonishing – a total of 5189 entrees were submitted. This was followed by the Nation Building Art Exhibition which was held from 12 September till 4 October 2015 whereby 240 shortlisted art pieces were exhibited in strategic locations such as Imago Shopping Center, Suria Shopping Mall, Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Gaya Street. Sabah State Education Office is proud to be part of this program and would continuously support such effort by SEEDS, FCWS and JCI Kota Kinabalu in the future. Such activity will not only enhance students’ skills and creativity in arts but also would manifest their love, faith and loyalty to the nation. In addition, involvement and support from public and NGOs such as SEEDS, FCWS and JCI Kota Kinabalu in the development of education are highly appreciated. This is in line with the aspirations of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 20132025. I hope that SEEDS, FCWS and JCI Kota Kinabalu would continue organizing such activities in the future as it would greatly benefit the society especially our children – the future leaders of Malaysia.

Society Empowerment & Economics Development of Sabah (SEEDS) is an independent think tank based in Sabah. In 2014, a series of discussions was held among fellow Sabahan comprising people from diverse professions, ethnicities, religions and political ideologies on the future of Malaysia, especially Sabah. As a result, SEEDS was officially formed in August 2014. The main driving force that led to the formation of SEEDS was the concern that, at the time, there was a distinct lack of meaningful discussions among general public on issues affecting the country, specifically in Sabah. There were plenty of criticisms. But sadly, instead of criticism of the constructive variety, most of them were toxic in nature: irrational comments devoid of any feasible solution or recommendations towards the current problems. This is where SEEDS comes in. By assisting, engaging and empowering citizens to express their ideas in a more rational way - and working closely with opinion leaders, leading researchers, key stakeholders and the public – SEEDS sought to find viable solutions to socio-economic, political and education issues (to name but a few). This objective is in line with SEEDS vision’s which is to create a modern, moderate and progressive society. In striving to achieve that vision, SEEDS has organised seminars, workshops and forums on issues strategic to Sabah - the latest being a workshop on the federal-state relations. The workshop was the first in a series of workshops that focused on the issue of autonomy. In addition, SEEDS has organised roundtable discussions on the social media; a series of seminars on security (held in east coast of Sabah); co-organized the Kupi Table Dialogue program with Universiti Teknologi MARA Sabah - a series of town-hall discussions on current issues; and also much more. SEEDS has also been involved in social programs such as the breaking of fast during Ramadhan with people from different faiths and also in celebrating Chinese New Year with the elderly to instil a sense of unity and understanding among Malaysians SEEDING IDEAS FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

FOREWORD Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah Chairman Datuk Badil Zaman bin Fazul Rahman Assalamualaikum and greetings to everyone. In a world where boundaries and limitations are the things of the past, we struggle to keep ourselves prepared for anything and everything. As citizens of a country in this borderless world, we are face with numerous elements that could affect our values and way of life. As we embrace globalisation and prepare ourselves to compete on the international stage, we must do all we can to protect and defend the country’s ideals of multiculturalism and peaceful coexistence. Our cultural diversity and harmonious way of living are our country’s greatest assets. It is our collective responsibility to safeguard them for our children and their children’s children. There are more than 40 ethnic groups in Sabah alone excluding other sub-ethnic groups with numerous linguistic variations. This remarkable cultural uniqueness of ours must be protected at all cost. To ensure the continuation of our common shared values of racial harmony and peaceful coexistence, we must continue to support the government’s various programmes to strengthen inter-ethnic relations and national integration. The introduction of the 1Malaysia concept is a step in the right direction to keep Malaysians together despite their racial and religious differences. More practical and community-related programmes must be introduced so that the 1Malaysia concept is understood by all. As an NGO whose vision is to create a modern, moderate and progressive society, we at SEEDS are committed to promote the principle of moderation espoused by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak through our programmes. Through our inaugural multifaith breaking of fast event, for instance, we were able to bring together families of different faiths to break fast and to appreciate each other’s religious values. “The Art of Nation Building” was specially designed to allow young children to show their love for the country through their own creative expression. This was done through a collaborative efforts with other like minded NGOs and organisations. I was particularly impressed by our young children who defined Malaysia through their drawings. It is hoped that the future of Sabah and Malaysia as a whole would be as bright and colourful as the drawings of our young children. Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude and sincere thanks to all who have given their time and effort in making this event a memorable and successful one. I would also like to congratulate all the winners and their parents for their participation in the programme.

FOREWORD Federation of Sabah Chinese Women Associations President Datuk Agnes Shim Tshin Nyuk 2015 marks the 52nd anniversary of the formation of Malaysia. This year more than ever we must bring to mind, and celebrate our rich multiculturalism, and the peace and harmony that stems from our unity. This is a trait that we as Malaysians are famous for the world over. There is no doubt that Malaysia has been through trying times, where harmony amongst our people is strained along the cultural and even religious divide. However history has proven that the values in all Malaysians overcome such negative influences and unwanted provocations. However the world is changing, and with it our values too succumb to different influences. As such, this ‘Art to Nation Building’ initiative was created to plant the seeds of patriotism and unity in school children, to ensure the continuation of our Malaysian values. ‘The Art to Nation Building’ art competition is a very encouraging initiative, jointly organised by a number of Sabah’s very own NGOs. The committee received in excess of 5000 pieces of art, submitted by schools from all over Sabah. This response is overwhelmingly wonderful, and it is such a joy to look at the vision of Malaysia through young eyes. In the vast majority of art pieces submitted, the expressions of what our children see as important for Malaysia, were pride, love and tolerance, which I found most reassuring. I am indeed confident that the nation’s future is in good hands. I would like to express special thanks to the co-organisers of this event, for their involvement and support: Sabah Education Department, Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu (JCIKK), Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS), and of course the corporation of schools & parents for their assisting in this event. Last but not least, my congratulations to all the winners, and all participants for your individual achievements.

Itulah terjadi dengan rakyat kita, berlainan masing-masing dan hidup aman bersama. Warna yang berlainan menjayakan lukisan ini, kaum yang berlainan menjadikan kehidupan orang Malaysia yang menarik ini.”
