The Philippines is now facing a big problem with the education sector due to the pandemic. Many are calling for the halting of Virtual Classes as it was seen not feasible for most of the learners in the country. However, the Department of Education still pushed for the implementation of the online classes. Further, as they opened the classes, the still majority of our students could not afford to rejoin the classes virtually due to their inability to purchase gadgets and access the internet.

With that present problem, JCI Lingayen Bagoong has created the concept of the Project ISKUL SERBIS, a classroom-on-wheels for the toddlers and pupils of Lingayen aged 6-8 who have a limited ability to connect with their classes online.

ISKUL SERBIS BACKBONE

While providing books and other instructional materials is fine, facilitating and directing learning to the learners is still the best. JCI Lingayen Bagoong, as a response to the problem of the education sector due to this pandemic, created the concept of the Iskul Serbis to provide alternative learning scheme for the pupils of Lingayen so they can still cope with their education despite their inability to access online learning systems.

On this project, JCI Lingayen Bagoong brought the classroom to the backyard of the pupils while still following strict protocols on the COVID-19 Pandemic, by inviting JCI members who were licensed professional teachers to teach the pupils following the unique curriculum that was crafted by the Local Organization with the assistance of educators.

The following objectives were set to create a clear vision for the said project: Establish a NoLearners-Left-Behind policy; Provide education for those pupil at home who can’t afford online schooling; Maximize the capacity of the organization and its partners on helping the community; Mobilize the Local Organization to support and provide assistance to the public during the pandemic.

START OF THE JOURNEY

Through a survey and analysis conducted by JCI Lingayen Bagoong last August 23, 2020, ten unenrolled pupils of the Alvear II Street in Brgy. Poblacion, Lingayen, a poverty-stricken seaside community, were chosen by the Local Organization as the first batch of pupils of the ISKUL SERBIS. The pupils were chosen based on their inability to access online learning due to their incapability of purchasing gadgets, limited access to the web, and rejected school registrations.

Afterwards, JCI Lingayen Bagoong scheduled the kids for an hour-long class for three days in their backyards. The schedule also follows a specific module and learning outline. Alongside the mentoring service, the pupils also received a kit which contains the Unique Iskul Serbis Workbook created by JCI Lingayen Bagoong as well as school supplies, alcohol, face shields and face masks.

Then, after three days of mentoring, the pupils completed the module set by the Local Organization and a commencement program was conducted to honor their course completion last September 15, 2020 at their backyard.
