JCI WoMandaue grieved over the death of LO Treasurer Xy-na Mejia Estrella on August 18, 2020. The chapter is deeply saddened by her untimely demise.
She became a member of JCI WoMandaue of the JCI Central Visayas, Area 4 in October 2016. She served as LO Treasurer in 2018, 2019 and 2020. JCI Xy-na Mejia Estrella was born on July 17, 1984 in General Santos City and passed away at the age of 36.
In her 4 year-journey with JCI WoMandaue, Xy-na made a number of significant contributions to JCI during her time as a member. Her sister is also a Jaycee whom she recruited in 2017. She even found love in JCI. Her boyfriend is an elected 2021 president of his chapter. Xy-na is an active JCI member and has chaired several projects on Pinay Power which promotes women empowerment. In 2017, she chaired a Boxing Activity for JCI Week in Central Visayas in partnership with the prominent ALA Boxing Promotions. She dubbed with the famous Muhammad Ali quote,”Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”
The quote may be a description of the famous boxer’s fighting techniques, yet this has become a philosophy that extends outside of the ring. This could also best describe Xy-na as a person and as a Jaycee. She was a woman who knew how to control herself through acceptance and by not going against her nature. She implies stationary presence at all times and responds with conviction. As a Womandue, Xy-na is indeed a woman of purpose. One that is always empowered to empower others, but portrays a reserved impression most of the time. She gets caught up in everyday life but she never forgets to acknowledge the smallest things that can make a big difference in her life and humanity. She withstood the test of times. There were strains and fractures in her JCI journey, but she remained calm and grounded. She understood the importance of service to humanity and being an active citizen. She fully grasped the values, mission and vision of JCI. She is one of JCI WoMandaue’s friendliest members. She is charming and her smile is always contagious and unapologetic which prevails even in difficult situations. She is not critical and her arguments were constructive. Her persona radiates positivity. One of her remarkable characteristics is her positive outlook in life and situation.
JCI Member Xy-na Mejia Estrella will always be remembered with respect and admiration for her commitment to the Junior Chamber International; and for her passion and compassion in creating sustainable impact to the community. She is an epitome of a WONDER WOMANdaue, seemingly ordinary but driven to reach extraordinary heights.
TOYM 2020
CAPS OFF THE CELEBRATION THROUGH AN INTIMATE AWARDS NIGHT
Written by: JCI Sen. Florica Aira Talah Pimentel 2020 National Chairperson, TOYM Search
The year-long search for The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of 2020 concluded through an intimate awards night at the Grand Hyatt Manila last February 18, 2021.
Spearheaded by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines, the awards night conferred the trophies and medals to the seven (7) finest young men and women of the country for 2020. The recipients are David Almirol Jr. (Science Technology and Engineering); Edgar Elago (Community Development/Education); George Royeca (Business Entrepreneurship in Pioneering Industries); Lesley Jeanne Cordero (Political and Social Sciences); Raymond Francis Sarmiento (Medicine); Capt. Ron Jr. Villarosa (Community Development/Military Service); and Pasig Mayor Victor Ma. Regis Sotto (Government Service).
The TOYM is a flagship project of JCI Philippines that aims to recognize the invaluable contributions of Filipinos under 40 who have made tangible impacts to society.
Due to the pandemic, the organizers of TOYM were compelled to explore the digital platforms in conducting the nationwide search for prospect honorees.
“With the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we have been confronted with challenges on how to conduct the search for TOYM given that strict lockdown was imposed across the country. But with the help of our team and all our partners, we managed to pivot to digital platforms and carry on with the search,” Florica Aira Talah Pimentel, TOYM 2020 National Chairperson mentioned during her opening message.
As the first-ever TOYM search that was undertaken entirely through online platforms, this national event is groundbreaking for surpassing physical obstacles and transcending into the digital age.
Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto as one of the awardees graced the occasion and delivered a heartfelt message to all the aspiring young leaders.
“Despite feeling that we are moving an immovable object whenever introducing reforms in the government, I always take comfort in knowing that there are thousand more young leaders who are pushing change and working hard to see a better Philippines for the next generation,” he said.
TOYM Foundation President Chaye Cabal-Revilla closed the program with a challenge to the 2020 awardees. “I hope and pray that you continue to do well and inspire us and many more to do the things beyond people can ever imagine. The country needs people like you and the world is hopeful because we have you who will make a difference,” she mentioned.
Due to the restrictions on mass gatherings, the ceremony was attended only by selected individuals and partners who have made significant contributions to the success of TOYM. This includes the members of the Screening and Judging Board, TOYM Committee 2020, TOYM Class of 2020 Awardees, and JCI 2020 and 2021 Board Members.
This year’s search is co-presented by Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., and Home Fibr and Smart Communications and supported by Gerry Roxas Foundation, Advantage Management Consulting Philippines, Inc., and Pal Maritime Corp.
