Hello There April has brought with it some fantastic training opportunities, an amazing business tour, some new members, a visit from our Deputy National President Michael Steel and an opportunity for some more public speaking practice. I was delighted that this month Auriel Majumdar was able to come along and help us learn about ‘making the connection’. This was an awesome training session which Michael Steel also attended. It gave members the opportunity to find out how to use their skills to utilize the best way to network and to try different phrases to start the conversation. We then put these skills into practice at our Networking Wednesday event at Bloo88 which is on the last Wednesday of every month - please check out our website.

Hugh Facey a past JCI Sheffield member who was also JCI UK National President in 1979, gave us a great honour by allowing us to have a tour around the business he founded, Gripple. We found out all about the history of how Gripple began and how it has moved forward to stay ahead in business and now operates internationally. Hugh operates a very unique business model which see the Gripple employees also owning shares in the business and we found out how this creates a very focused environment where its not just one person making the decisions, as well as creating employment security for all who work there. I was amazed how the great ethics of Gripple have an effect on each employee and how proud they are to work there.

JCI Barnsley held their annual open mic night in which member Anne Homer and I took part in, supported by Ryan Pilkington in the audience. This was a great night and we found out about some awesome topics from each speaker such as park runs, morning rituals, Slimming World, Pinterest and 5 steps to a more positive life. I’m not sure we the subjects could have been any more diverse!

This month we also went to visit our twin chamber, JCI Mayo in Ireland which was an awesome event. We have a full write up further in our magazine. We have lots of events coming up over the next few months, so keep an eye on our website and social media channels and I would love to see you there.

We are also well on with our bid to host National Convention 2017 in Sheffield. If you would like to be involved in this please get in touch or if you think your business would like to sponsor this event, I would also be interested to hear from you.

We have lots of new projects coming up and I know Neal Stirk Deputy President is looking for some members to join some of these teams especially organising our Annual Dinner which is on 8th October 2016 at The Holiday Inn Royal Victoria. We also have a fundraising afternoon tea event to be held on 10th July 2016, and are looking for members who might be up for lending a hand for this as well. Projects are a great way to put skills you learn from our training events in to action as well as building your CV. I would like to take this time to thank all our members, patrons and supporters for your help so far this year and look forward to working with you for the rest of the year.

Deputy’s Corner Well the months just keep going by so quickly and with lots of great events and us all in JCI Sheffield having a fantastic time its no wonder! We’ve had training we’ve had socials and we’ve had fun trips to see our twinnie’s in Ireland! On top of that we also had our first national council meeting which was held in Rotherham.

First I’m going to talk about Auriel Majumdar and her training which was her approach to Networking but more importantly making a connection. She talked about her transition from working in public sector to starting her own business. But also using her connections that she’s made over the years to go from a new business to a thriving business. It was a really refreshing and honest training session which recommended to us that instead of going to events with the typical buzzwords we usually use, just be yourself, be confident but also stay true to who you are and you’ll make better contacts and work with people who are right for you. I was really impressed with this session and I’m looking to use the techniques learnt here again soon!

Aside from the usual events and socials I also want to mention that we’ve got some really appealing and different events in the pipeline which is a great chance for members to learn new skills and project manage which of course looks brilliant on the CV! So what have we got? We’ve got our Afternoon Tea event which is aimed at raising money for our chosen charities, our Annual Dinner project which I’m working on but looking for some help from members who would like to get involved.

I’ve also been to see our Twinnie’s in Mayo since I last wrote, which was my first trip to Ireland and it was simply amazing! We flew out on the 6th of May and quickly did what we do best by having a BBQ and a Neal Stirk good catch up. On the Saturday we had a couple of 2016 JCI Sheffield Deputy President neal.stirk@jcisheffield.org.uk training sessions with our own Ryan teaching us about Blogging and how to make the most of one and share good best practices. Adrian from JCI Mayo then took us through some debating and public speaking training it was a great session and I look forward to using the techniques learnt. To hear more in depth what we got up to check out the Twining is Winning section.

At the end of April I went to the first national council of the year which was a great meeting and I’m happy to say a really really productive one with lots of decisions were made that will help us going forward and make what we do easier, incuding approving a proposal for a new website! It was also great to hear about the great work that National Board have been up to and see just how busy they are, but more importantly it was fantastic to see other Local Presidents and catching up. Well done to JCI Rotherham they did a fantastic job of organising the event.

Forging Strong Connections Gareth Carson - 2016 JCI Sheffield President

chatting with everyone over dinner and dancing our socks off on the dance floor was a great way to let our hair down and bond a bit more. I loved ‘living’ with everyone for the weekend, its a unique experience that takes you away from ‘real life’ for the weekend and makes you feel as though you are back in college, living a care free life. I am already excited for our return trip to Sheffield and I cannot wait to meet some new friends when I get there.

What a fantastic weekend this #twinningiswinning has been. It was great to spend some time with some amazing friends. Karen this years JCI Mayo President and I travelled from the airport in one car, which should have been a journey involving taking lots of photos of scenic County Mayo, however we were distracted by excitement of telling each other how well our chambers had been doing since our last regular Skype call. After calling for ice cream Adrian Corcoran - JCI Mayo which could easily become a tradition in my eyes, we arrived at our fantastic cottage for a weekend of I love twinning weekend! It always promises a full on laugh fest with good friends, late nights and lots exciting times and laughter. of learning. each Sheffield member, Gareth, Mark, Ryan and Neal about what their plans are and what they hope to achieve and in each case we are now better friends than before. I also got to know new member Lucy a bit better and yet again have come away from twinning weekend with a new friend.

So as another twinning weekend draws to a close, I look forward to our return visit to Sheffield during the summer.

We now have new phrases and jokes from our weekend, deepening our relationship with Sheffield and I am delighted that the twinning program, which has been held as an example to other branches, continues to run so strongly between us. Thank you twins, slan abhaile (safe home) and we’ll see you soon!

Karen Mcc - 2016 JCI Mayo President The twinning relationship between Mayo and Sheffield is the envy of other JCI branches in Ireland and the UK and this weekend saw the relationship deepen and strengthen even more. It was wonderful to host our twins in Castlebar and to get to show them some of the amazing things that Mayo has to offer. Friday night was an Irish BBQ - where most of the food is cooked inside and eaten inside, but the burgers are done on the barbecue! It was great to catch-up and chat, laugh and have the craic for the night. Saturday was a busy one with training from Ryan from Sheffield, who made his international training debut in very fine style, and Adrian from Mayo who delivered excellent ex-tempore and debating training to get us all involved and practising.

This was followed by team building and assault course and dinner and dancing tis late.

Sunday was no less busy with volunteering with Mayo SPCA followed by a tour of the world heritage site the Ceide Fields from the renowned archeologist Seamas Caufield.

As well as this he brought us into the bog to try turf-cutting by hand, flour grinding and walking barefoot through the bog to get a different experience and connection with the landscape. Sunday finished off with pizza making and games until late. A bit of friendly competition and rivalry between our branches made for a really fun night.

Twinning really is a fantastic thing to be involved in. Where else but JCI can you make great friends in such a short space of time? Where else would you take the plunge and go away to a different country with 4 people you’ve never met before as Sheffield new member Lucy did? And where else can you push yourself out of your comfort zone in a safe, friendly environment where everyone is rooting for you and encouraging you to do well? Thank you twins for making this weekend so great, cant wait to visit you in Sheffield later in the year :) Mark Smith - JCI Sheffield Twinning weekend visits are always one of the main highlights of my annual JCI calendar and this year was just what the doctor ordered for me. This is the fourth year I have visited County Mayo and very proud to have been part

of every trip since the JCI Sheffield and JCI Mayo officially twinned in 2012.

What always strikes me about visiting our Irish counterparts is how friendly and welcoming they all are, even though we may only physically see them a few times a year on our mutual visits or at European Conference or World Congress, but of course hear their dulcet tones more often via our google hangout calls.

As usual, the JCI Mayo team organized a long weekend jam packed full of activities spanning all areas of JCI opportunity: from dog walking and cleaning out the cattery volunteering with the MSPCA (the Mayo equivalent to the RSPCA) as part of community; inspiring blogging training and debating training for our dose of personal development; a visit and historical tour of Ceide Fields as well as lots of informal chats between us all sharing ideas for business; several tipples over a BBQ, a meal out, pizza making and dancing for social; all part of an amazing international program.

Over the last few years, I’ve got to know the JCI Mayo members really well, sharing funny stories and creating new ones from the weekend but also bouncing ideas off each other and sharing good practice. We’ve had chats about the very successful TOYP (Ten Outstanding Young People) award program that JCI Ireland run so well, this year lead by JCI Mayo Immediate Past President and this year National Director of Community Keira Keogh; chatted to Adrain about the Friendly Business Awards; talked with Deborah National Director of Training about the JCI UK new training team and so much more. Again an incredible weekend. Thank you twins.

Neal Stirk - JCI Sheffield What. A. Weekend! This was my first twinning weekend in Mayo and has set a very high benchmark for future weekends. I always enjoy seeing our twins from the emerald isle and hearing how they’re getting on and sharing idea’s, techniques and just helping out where possible.

The weekend kicked off on the Friday a BBQ and a few drinks in our lovely cottage in Castlebar. Where we have a surprise visit from Aine , it was lovely to meet her and I hope we get to see her again soon.

On the Saturday we kicked off with Sheffield’s own marketing man Ryan teaching us all about the world of blogging and how to make the most of them. It was great to see Ryan train as I’d seen the same presentation at Marketing Academy and I could clearly see how much he’d progressed as a trainer in such a short space of time. We then had Adrian train us on debating which was brilliant as this is one my weakest areas in JCI but I now feel much more confident thanks to Adrian. We then went to Westport War Games and met Leon who gave us some fantastic training on perception and how sometimes we let vague targets dictate what we achieve when we should be setting our own markers and working towards that. We then tried our hand at the assault course and all attempted to scale a wall, this was challenging but we all managed it even with

a little help from each other. The evening JCI was filled with great food, great drink and even better company.

The Sunday was a little more slower paced but still as amazing. We walked some of the lovely dogs at the MSPCA and cuddled some week old kittens and learnt about the amazing work that the MSPCA do, I’m really proud of what JCI Mayo do for the MSPCA and I hope that relationship continues long in to the future. After that we then went to the world heritage site of Ceide Fields and had a tour of that with Seamus Caulfield who told us how he discovered the stone walls of ancient farmers who travelled to Ireland thousands of years ago. He also told us about the make up of the bog fields in Ireland and how the peat is farmed. We also after all of the fantastic talks were encouraged to walk bare foot through the bog, which is one of the weirdest experiences in my life and one that I can honestly say I loved as in no other organization could Imagine young professionals walking bare foot through a field in Ireland.

This I can honestly say has been a fantastic weekend and one I’ll never forget as I’ve done new things and forged relationships with our twinnies long may our twinning continue and I hope to see them all again soon.

Ryan Pilkington - JCI Sheffield This was my second twinning weekend and I loved every minute of it! The twinning weekend is a chance to indulge on all things JCI. From the international aspect of travelling over to the beautiful Mayo in Ireland; the business aspect of sharing best practice and ideas, the personal development opportunities thanks to the training sessions; making an impact to a worthy course in the community with the MSPCA Animal Cruelty Charity and of course the socials.

A highlight for me was being able to deliver my first international training session on Blogging. The 2 hour course was created to share one of the best marketing tools around and give members tips and tools on how to start off and blog effectively. It was a brilliant experience and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s always amazing to think that before JCI I wouldn’t have ever been confident enough to deliver training to a group of people, never mind in another country! That’s just one of multiple things I can thank JCI for.

Karen and the rest of the JCI Mayo team put on an amazing itinerary for us. We got to see the stunning beauty of the Emerald Isle, learn about it’s history and take part in experiences we may never get to do again. One of which was walking barefoot through a world heritage site and natural bog land. Something that I wouldn’t have ever done without JCI and one that I oddly enjoyed even if I was anxious about it at first!

It was a brilliant experience getting to know our twins better and made friends who I know will be friends for life.

Weekends like this truly do lift your spirits and put everything into perspective. I can’t wait to see our twins come over to Sheffield for the second twinning weekend! Thank you to all at JCI Mayo for an amazing weekend!

In this monthly feature we will be talking to a member of the JCI UK National Board so that you can understand who does what role, a little about them and what their goals are for this year.

Name Katie Ogley Local Chamber: JCI Doncaster How long have you been a JCI member?

Coming up to 10 years What made you become a JCI member?

I can’t really put my finger on it! Somebody I know was a member and when I used to tell them all the kinds of things I liked to do (such as arranging netball weekends away), they said it would be right up my street. I went to a seminar through work and just happened to meet about 4 people who were JCI members. I went to my first event after that and everyone was lovely, so I joined.

What is your role on National Board this year?

Admin Director What made you want to take on this role?

I see JCI as a development organization at every level. I have been a member for a long time and I’m still learning and developing. I have taken so much from my JCI membership that I want to give something back, but I also wanted to do this role to develop myself. I’m hoping that pushing myself out of my comfort zone will encourage other people to do so too.

What positions have you held within JCI prior to National Board?: In 2014 I was the JCI UK Community Director and the JCI Yorkshire Regional Group Chairman.

What advice would you give to members who are thinking about taking on roles within their local council?

Three things; Listen but don’t be led!

If you could choose one national JCI event to attend in 2016 which would you choose?

This is a really tough one! National Convention is always a highlight in the calendar as there are so many different activities in one weekend. I didn’t attend a regional or national event until about 3 years into my membership, and I wish I’d done it earlier. Local events are great, but it’s always nice to get out and about to meet members from across the country, and often international members too.

Do you have a goal for 2016?

I feel I have 3 main goals for 2016; To have sufficiently supported the national board and national council teams.

Be more confident on the admin side of JCI. Inspire someone else to take a risk and step outside of their comfort zone.

Should you be doing it?

As our lives become more and more hectic and filled with ‘to do’ lists that never seem to end, big and small screens and our need to move from place to place our mind can end up feeling like it’s struggling to keep up. Meditation has been used for thousands of years in an attempt to ease the mind, enable us to focus and allow us to take a step back. But in today’s modern world does this ancient practice still help?

We talk you through two of the best social media planning and scheduling tools available. Buffer and Hootsuite. In this article we will share with you the best bits of both systems and the cons and help you decide which you should be using to make sure you use your time efficiently and effectively.

There are a load of social media tools available nowadays to help you become more efficient with marketing. In this article we will be sharing with you the differences and the features of two of the biggest tools out there for social media planning and scheduling. Buffer and Hootsuite. Tools like these have become popular with marketers and business owners as it allows you to take a step back, schedule your social media content for that week (or longer), sit back and watch it go live. It allows us more time to be able to focus on the jobs on that ever growing to do list. So, which system should you be looking into?

Buffer. www.buffer.com

Hootsuite www.hootsuite.com Setting up your account for Hootsuite is simple. All you have to do is pair one your existing social media profiles and set up the various setting and accounts you want linked. The dashboard for Hootsuite is a little more complex in comparison to Buffer. There are a couple more options which allow you to see all of your social media accounts in one view so that you can easily see what posts are going live at what time and on which platform.

Pros: You can choose whatever time you want for each post You can see your streamline (and manage what you see in it) and therefore you can see what posts you have scheduled for all of your social media on one platform More social media accounts are supported (Youtube, Instagram, Wordpress, Soundcloud and LinkedIn Groups)

One thing to note with Buffer is the ease of setting up an account. It is nothing more than a couple of clicks on some buttons snd the system does all of the work for you. You can choose what social media profiles you would like to connect (out of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn), whether you want it to find the optimal posting times for your content or whether you would like to enter this manually and the option to Cons: have Buffer track your posts to see how they perform. You can’t change the time of post without editing it.

JCI Vice President Assigned to Europe There are many roles and opportunities within JCI and no end to where you can develop, grow and meet new people.

We had a chat with JCI Vice President assigned to Europe Kasper Ilves about why he joined the organisation, how it has impacted his life and find out what his role responsibilities are.

How did you find out about JCI? When did you join and what made you join?

I was studying Masters of Business Administration in the University when I first heard about JCI. My very good friend and studying partner invited me one day to one seminar in entrepreneurship week organized by the local city. After learning about the content and the background of the facilitator of the particular seminar I already knew that my friend will be interested in joining the organization. Being a supportive friend I made my decision to apply to join the organization before the seminar without ever meeting the members. I am very happy for that invitation and proud to be part of the organization now.

So how would you describe yourself and what do you do within JCI and outside of JCI? During my studies I was also working as a business process manager in an international IT company with over 1000 employees. My colleagues described me as very active young person and suggested me to join an organization like Round Table to put my energy to good use. During my short research about such organizations I did not notice JCI. Now after being invited to JCI event, joining the organization and also seeing how many amazing things we are doing within the organization, I do realize that many good acts go unnoticed and thus our visibility still needs improving in many countries. Therefore within JCI I strongly stand for developing a public relations program for better visibility and brand management for use in outside of JCI. And as one part of it I see that we have to open up JCI events to external audiences. Being able organize an event which is attractive to the external audience will not only bring us higher participation and potentially membership growth but will also increase the visibility, will guarantee the high quality event for our members and will attract more corporate partners as well.

How has JCI developed you in your personal and professional life?

JCI is like a development accelerator providing development opportunities in many different areas. One good senator of my chapter and former International EVP for Africa said once to me that whenever somebody from JCI offers you something – always say “yes”. Following that advice has given me extraordinary possibilities to develop my skills

from being a simple commentator to a basketball game to knowing how to put together a program which changes the education system in the country, from excellent budgeting to executing a impactful training, from being a leader to being able to identify different types and needs of the people in the team. I personally think that JCI develops better leaders. As one other senator use to say that if you are able to lead in a non-profit organization through motivating and inspiring then you are definitely able to be a better leader in an working environment where everybody gets paid as well.

What do you like most about being involved with JCI and why?

Like many other active young citizens I like to change the world for better. And JCI is giving me this opportunity. It can be through making the positive change in me or through helping the community around me or making contribution to a global initiative like “Peace is Possible”. It is however always one act at the time, one positive change at the time. And this one act is done in a supporting learning environment where everybody has opportunity to develop.

So every positive change you make, every act in JCI will make you a better person as well. Therefore it is true in JCI – the more you give, the more you get. That is why I like to make the positive change in the world together with JCI.

How do you think JCI can unite all sectors of society?

My experience shows that if handled correctly then local government is more than happy to offer support to different JCI projects which match their priorities. This means also trustworthy access to local community members and local companies.

Projects which help to integrate migrants or create local awareness of the migrants’ situation or help to solve the problems in the origin countries. The “Peace is Possible” campaign will culminate this year in 21. September with the “Peace Day” where many countries in the world are organizing in the same day events. This is also test to you, me and all of us whether we are able to stand tall united all over the world.

As a Vice President I am not only saying that we have to open our events to external audience. I am actually helping the organizing teams to come up with the project plan, with the program and with the marketing strategy to do it. I share my firsthand experience because I have already done it myself couple of years ago as Director of National Conference where we had much more participants in the conference than we had members in National Organization.

I am not only preaching to unite all sectors of society but as a Vice President I participating in the negotiation meetings, sharing best practices and drawing models on how to unite all sectors of society.

I am not only saying that we should be part of something big to create greater positive impact but as a Vice President I am also in the organizing teams for “Peace is possible” events as well as regularly consulting with “Let’s Do It” Cleanup team to help to move forward with their plans and also find people from different countries who are either interested in being part of a project so big which has never been done before in the world or interested in taking up ambitious leadership challenges.

I will am not only talking but I also acting. And if we all will do like this then we will see the positive change much faster and much bigger then we hoped.

Where have you visited in the UK and what do you think of our country?

I have visited London many times for business. I think that London is like a small world inside of the big country. Endless opportunities, cultural diversity and exciting history – I like it all. Visiting small city Rotherham gave me additionally a good view of a smaller city which made the picture more whole. UK has and has had a central role in the whole world and I respect the country very much for having taken that responsibility. On a more personal note I really enjoy the British dry humor.

Is there anything else you would like to say to our members?

Being active is not only worrying about growing the membership number. It is also about providing active citizens the opportunities to be active, helping them follow their dreams, giving them the possibility to be relevant.

Everybody wants to do something. All the active citizens – member or not – want to make a positive change in the world. We just have to find out what they want, help them to align their personal goals with global goals and then help them to just act.

The JCI UK A Pound A Day campaign returns this year and we are urging you to Achieve Awesome and take part in the challenge. Our members, along with ones from around the UK, have taken part in the challenge in previous years and although it was tough were glad we took part. The campaign helps to raise awareness of poverty around the UK and this year it will tie in with World Hunger Day 2016.

My JCI Journey Mark Smith I will start at the very beginning! I first found out about JCI Sheffield when I saw a tweet promoting an open evening aimed at young professionals in Sheffield which grabbed my interest partly to meet other ‘like minded’ individuals but also potentially to meet business owners and entrepreneurs who might be interested in supporting the children’s charity SAFE@LAST that I work for.

I could literally go on for pages and pages about how I have grown as a person though JCI – developed my confidence, developed existing skills, learning new skills and lapping up such a wide range of extraordinary and simply awesome experiences and meeting some people I now consider to be my closest friends. As well as on a personal level, I have also benefitted on a professional level as JCI Sheffield have supported SAFE@LAST for several years in terms of I toddled along to the open evening, quite happy going on fundraising, giving up hundreds of hours volunteering in all my own as in my mind I was in work mode so I was use sorts of ways at events and I even recruited a trustee from to doing such things, whereas if I thought it was going to JCI! It was an absolute honour to serve as Local President in 2015 and to lead the chamber and work alongside such an incredible team with the theme of ‘be the change’. Some of the highlights of my presidential year was hosting the lustrum dinner (held every 5 years) for Past Presidents, celebrating 100 years of the JCI global movement, launching a small grants scheme for local groups, delivering training at European Conference (Turkey) and World Congress (Japan) and leading the chamber in being awarded ‘most outstanding JCI chamber in the UK’.

If you are to be competent in what you do it is essential to have a clear understanding of who you are, what your qualities are and that you know, when you attend a networking event, what you want to get out of it. It is essential to be consistent with your brand, personality and values.
