Welcome from 2015 President News 100 Years Be The Change The Team: Amy Melody Community A Pound A Day Events Diary Inspiration Day Members News JCI Yorkshire lInternational Business

Hello there!

JCI provides development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. My challenge to all our members this year is to consider how you can be the change you want to see in the world and to consider how you can push and develop yourself and your skills, how you can grow in your work or business and what change can you make in your community. Our aim this year is to continue to run a variety of programmes that will appeal to you our members and that will encourage you to meet, learn and grow across all the areas of JCI opportunity: business, community, training, international and social. Listening to feedback from members , we plan to vary the days of the week that we run our activities on, rather than have a set pattern so that members with other commitments won’t miss out on sessions they really want to attend. Our focus this year is on three priorities: • • •

Local engagement Membership growth and engagement Profile raising of JCI Sheffield

Please read our full plan of action, what I’m calling as our plan of impact! Check this out on our website. I am really pleased to have a strong Council Team this year to help me to run the chamber and to serve you as members. Please do get in touch with us to share your ideas or ask us any questions – please remember there is no such thing as a silly question! There are lots of different ways to get involved what ever you are interested in so please come along to our launch night on 23rd January to find out more and keep an eye on our website and social media channels.

be the CHANGE

I am so excited and proud to be the 2015 President of JCI Sheffield. This has got to be one of, if not the best roles there is and to be leading the chamber this year when JCI globally is celebrating its centenary anniversary, makes it all the more special.

JCI Sheffield Scoops National Awards I’m not sure there are words to explain just how proud I was to be 2014 President! At JCI UK National Convention weekend in November 2014 we picked up an amazing FOUR awards and a certificate of merit! That’s a phenomenal achievement and one that is thanks to each and every member, trainer, partner and supporter who have worked together over the year. Most Outstanding Personal Skills Development for our Be Better programme. We challenged all members to tell us how they wanted to “be better” in 2014 and then devised a training programme to support your needs and goals. This has included putting on two or three training sessions or business talks each month - huge thanks here to our Events & Training Director 2014, the amazing Hannah Woodcock, and all our speakers for giving up their time for free! We also sponsored members to attend national and international events, and supported our members to become trainers themselves. Most Outstanding Economic Development project for our partnership with RISE Sheffield, a city wide graduate internship scheme for SMEs supported by the Council, both our universities and private companies. The impact of graduate unemployment and underemployment has been incredible and we’re proud to have supported over 100 interns with free trial membership. Most Outstanding Member - congratulations Ryan Pilkington!! If ever there was a member who truly embodies the “Be Better” spirit it is Ryan. I have been so privileged to watch his personal journey this year - from a student too shy to attend Network Wednesday, to an active international jet setter running his own fashion design business and blog. Keep your eye on this one! Extempore Champion - having won the JCI Yorkshire off the cuff public speaking trophy earlier this year our Membership & Engagement Director 2014, Gareth Carson, pulled out all the stops to win the national competition. Congratulations! Our Deputy President 2014, Mark Smith, was also awarded a certificate of merit in recognition of the efforts put into preparing for 2015. As if ALL of that wasn’t enough, the rest of JCI Yorkshire basically swept the board with awards or certificates of merit in just about every category. And if there had been an award for best cheering I guarantee it would have gone to the Yorkshire tables! An absolute highlight for our region was seeing Katie Ogley awarded with a senatorship (the highest honour JCI can bestow) in recognition of her dedication. Well deserved Katie! Thank you so much and keep on being better! Blog written by Immediate Past President Ilona Alcock November 18th 2014 Ilona.alcock@jcisheffield.org.uk

This year members will take part in JCI Project Impact 100. This calls for all JCI members, partners and communities to join together in celebrating 100 years of impact by targeting local needs, taking collaborative action and inspiring global impact. This yearlong campaign is a call to action to empower young people and their communities to impact the lives of 100 individuals by taking action. If each of JCI’s 5,000 local organisations around the world undertake a Project Impact 100 then the collective actions around the world would mean that the movement would have positively impacted half a million people across the globe! 1 project per local JCI organisation 100 people impacted in the community 5k participating JCI local organisations 500k positively impacted around the world! For more information head to http://www.jci.cc/100years Let us know your ideas for how we can mark this special year!

Mark Smith 2014 Most Outstanding JCI Member in the world. JCI Sheffield

Ryan Pilkington 2014 Most Oustanding JCI Member UK JCI Sheffield Since joining JCI just over a year ago I never thought that I would fall in love with it as much as I have done. It’s thanks to this organisation and the connections that I’ve made that I’ve grown as much as I have. I’ve become a fashion blogger for Meadowhall, written for magazines and thanks to the support from everyone in the organisation, I’ve had the confidence to start my own fashion brand and take on a role on JCI Sheffield’s 2015 Council Team as Communications Director! At JCI National Convention in Canary Wharf, London at the gala dinner I won Most Outstanding Member of JCI UK. I think it’s fair to say that anyone who was their and saw me that I was a fair bit shocked and some would say emotional. Pure shock. To me all I’ve done is go to events and make the most of my membership. But there I was standing next to JCI UK President 2014 Kate Senter accepting my award. I know now that joining JCI has been the best decision I’ve ever made and most likely the best I’ll ever make.

@_RyanPilkington ryan.pilkington@jcisheffield.org.uk

It was an absolute honour to receive the most outstanding JCI member in the world award at my first JCI World Congress in Germany in November 2014. I always strive to be an active citizen, to push myself outside my comfort zones and to help play my part in my community so to be recognised in this way and to be given this award out of 200,000 JCI members feels incredible! It was fantastic to hear so many people cheer for me when my name was read out. What made it even more special was being able to go up on stage to receive my award from the JCI World President, with my good friend and fellow JCI Sheffield member, Kate Senter in her role as JCI UK National President. I remember looking out on to the audience of thousands of people all giving me a standing ovation and not quite believing I was there!

Community

Being a member of JCI is all about being an active citizen and creating positive change. A big part of this is our community programme where we aim to make a difference in the community such as through volunteering and fundraising. This year we are supporting 4 main charities. These cover a variety of needs of the Sheffield community, children, older people and animals. We are also supporting the Nothing But Nets charity which is the global charity partner of JCI. We are aiming to raise enough money to buy the equivalent of a bed net per JCI Sheffield member. Below is further information on all four of our chosen charities. We want our members to come up with ideas on how we can help these causes. Look out for our JCI Impact training in February which is all about how you can assess what the needs are of the community. If you would like to know more or get involved in any of our projects please contact Neal Stirk Community Action Director on neal.stirk@jcisheffield.org.uk

Age UK Sheffield is an independent, local organisation dedicated to supporting older people in Sheffield, particularly those who are vulnerable or isolated. We do this through a range of services ranging from one-to-one support in people’s homes to information and advice. As a local organisation we are best placed to understand and respond to the needs of the people we exist to help but we’re also part of a national federation of over 400 organisations who together can have a real impact on the national issues that affect us all.

Nothing But Nets is a global grassroots campaign to raise awareness and funding to fight malaria, a leading cause of death among children in Africa. Nothing But Nets works with UN partners like UNICEF, the UN Refugee Agency, and the World Health Organization to purchase nets and distribute them to countries in Africa. Net distributions are typically part of a wider public health effort within a country coordinated by the Ministry of Health, the UN and other local and international organizations.

The Sheffield Animal Centre which rehabilitates and rehomes unwanted, neglected and abandoned cats and dogs. We neuter, vaccinate and microchip every dog and cat which comes to the Centre, prior to adoption. We rehome around 1000 animals per year from our Centre, all of which have come to us further to rescue from cruelty or neglect, or that their owners are no longer able to care for them. Our job is to rehabilitate and rehome these animals and to raise the funds to do so.

Everyday Millions of people across the world survive on less than £1 a day and for them it’s a real struggle and it shouldn’t be! So here’s where you come in! 7 Days 7 Pounds to live on and the change from your normal shop going to charity. Simple! But why am I doing it? Simply I believe it’s a great cause and a great challenge which I think others should do it too. You’re not really giving up anymore than you’d normally spend and helps families who really do live hand to mouth. Below for anyone wanting some tips I’ve put a few below. Shop Around: Look for the best deal saving 10p here and 20p there could make a huge difference to your budget during the week. Plan Ahead: Planning head will help you budget better and bring your costs down further. Drink Plenty of Water: Tap water is free and it’s simply the king for keeping hydrated! Some good go to foods are Beans and Lentils there cheap and pad any good meal out. They contain Fibre, Iron, Calcium and Protein. These work well in Tomato Sauces and some Curries. Feel free to email me at neal.stirk@jcisheffield.org.uk and I’ll be happy to help.

The Rules! The rules are simple!

• You have a £7 week budget • You can use basic seasonings of salt and pepper but spices such as chilli or garlic unless they have come out of your budget • You can use oil in small amounts for cooking but it can’t be used in large amounts for things like salad dressings etc unless it comes out of your budget • You can buy items that come in large quantities, such as tea bags, split it and exclude the percentage of money for the amount taken out. However, you must declare this before the event and make sure you are not tempted to cheat and dip into the part that is from outside your budget!

Business

I’d like to begin by stating that it is an honour being asked to write this piece for the first business section of 2015. I initially discovered JCI whilst working in Japan. My then business partner told me that the JCI mission was ‘to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change’. That really resonated with me at that time as I was working within an international capacity to create social development projects in areas of deprivation. I’ve always found myself becoming the point man of CSR for every organisation that I’ve joined. I believe this is because I was raised with a strong ethos of giving what you can to support those in need. The experience of being bought up on a council estate riddled with drugs and violence, having to avoid syringes on my daily walk to school to ending up living and studying in Oxford and achieving a 1st Class hons degree has given me a rounded perspective of society. When you work 9 – 5 for someone else, there is an obvious restriction on the time you have to devote to helping others against profitability/output. When you decide to work for yourself, YOU decide on the amount that you can devote to benevolent causes in relation to your profitable works. Regardless of my experience and/or ability it has still been daunting deciding to create my own business. Over the past 10 years I have delivered successful digital strategies in a variety of industries including film, fashion, beauty, recruitment, luxury goods and television. I recently featured on the BBC with Rony Robinson on ‘My Life so Far’ and appeared on the regional news for a digital skills school project. As a digital strategist, I’ve consulted with the European Parliament, Leeds City Council, UKTI, on various boards and a plethora of others. My strategies have also been implemented by both public and private sector clients. Even with all this experience and positive reinforcement, I still found myself doubting my ability to ‘go it alone’. The support that I’ve received as a member of JCI is one factor that has provided me with greater confidence in creating my own digital consultancy. The network of support within Sheffield’s business community is vast. From mid January 2015, I’ll be running my own online marketing consultancy to fill an obvious gap within the market. Forecasting a change within a particular industry can be tricky but if you’re diligent, experienced and stay abreast of the latest research you can begin to notice patterns. In 2015 there’ll be a lot more companies having SEO/Social Media specialists in-house. This brings about various issues, such as the shortage of senior managers and directors that have to relevant experience in creating comprehensive strategies, monitoring systems and that can also further train and develop the in-house specialists. There’s the obvious cost to having a permanent head of digital, especially for SMEs. The best way to tackle this is to hire a non executive digital manager/director that can enter into a company 1 or 2 days a month and effectively manager their online presence. I plan to use my experience in creating strategies, training specialists and developing monitoring systems for companies of all sizes to be able to use online marketing effectively. I want to dispel the myth that SEO is black magic. Utilising effective processes, structures and performance leads to online growth and greater sales. It’s all about the results. Away from the corporate success, I’ve also had personal online success. My first social media music page received over 300,000 views in under 4 months, my fitness/fashion blog after it’s first month received over 400 views daily and my latest LinkedIn blog post ‘SEO 2015 The Competitive Edge’ has within the last 2 days received over 5000 views with comments and likes from business leaders across the globe. As they say in Yorkshire, ‘the proof is in the pudding’.
