Hello there So its time to write my final introduction this year for our award winning magazine, Steel City News as I finish in office as 2015 President for our multiple award winning, JCI Sheffield.

be the CHANGE

What an incredible year it has been, full of countless highs and achievements as a Chamber, mixed with some challenges and certainly a lot of ‘learning by doing’, which is what being a member of JCI is all about. I am over the moon that one of the several awards we picked up at the 2015 National Awards, was the ‘most outstanding local chamber in the UK’. What an absolute honour it has been to lead JCI Sheffield in its 88th year of operation locally and in this year where we have celebrated and marked the centenary anniversary since the JCI global movement was founded, way back in 1915. There are so many highlights to feel proud of this year that it has been difficult to summarise all the great things we have been up to over the last twelve months.

Some of my personal favourites have got to include hosting the Lustrum dinner for Past Presidents back in February. This is only organised once every five years so it was an honour to meet some of the past leaders of what use to be known as the British Junior Chamber. As a result of this event, it then inspired us to run the Five Weirs Walk project as JCI Sheffield had previously created this walk several years ago. We also had Past Presidents stepping forward to take part in a debating contest of alumni versus current members! All these events were very fitting with the 100 year celebrations this year. I have really enjoyed our international opportunities this year and have been delighted to further stregthen our twinning relationship with JCI Mayo in Ireland. The twinning weekend visits are always a personal favourite in the JCI calender and our monthly conference calls have helped to share ideas and challenges so we can learn from each other. Massive thank you to JCI Mayo President Keira Keogh and her team for their friendship and support. I am proud of the impact we have made together and the work we have done to raise the profile of JCI Sheffield this year, for example by launching this monthly online magazine. There are so many examples where members have pushed themselves, grown in confidence and done things they would never imagine doing before and this is what I love about JCI.

After a fantastic year, I am very pleased to be handing over the President’s chain of office into the very capable hands of 2016 President, Gareth Carson. I look forward to working with Gareth and the rest of his 2016 Council Team as Immediate Past President with the theme of ‘Achieve Awesome’ next year. I would like to say a special thank you to my 2015 Council Team for being so fabulous this year, a massive thank you to senator Tracy Viner for giving her time as my mentor, thank you to our Patrons and supporters and last but by no means least, thank you to our members for all for your hard work, committment and support this year, striving to ‘be the CHANGE’. On behalf of JCI Sheffield, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and all the very best for the new year. Festive cheer,

Mark Smith 2015 President JCI Sheffield mark.smith@jcisheffield.org.uk

A Year of

Training

The mission of JCI is to ‘provide development opportunities that empower young people to creative positive change’. We ‘feel proud’ that we picked up the ‘Best Local Skills Development Program’ Award at this year’s JCI European Conference in Turkey which is a testament to the hard work by both our 2014 and 2015 Council Teams. We have hosted a range of training sessions that gave our members the chance to learn new skills, develop their confidence and make a positive change, in line with our theme this year of ‘be the change’. Our sessions pushed our members outside our comfort zones. We are grateful to all our trainers who have given their time and skills to deliver their sessions on a voluntary basis and have included training by several of our members, including from our twin chamber JCI Mayo in Ireland, as well as local partners. This year we have ran JCI ‘official training courses’ including JCI Achieve and JCI Impact as well as the JCI ‘recommended training courses’ effective communications and networking. Our training program kicked off in January with a unique session ‘Develop to Succeed’ which was all about encouraging our members to reflect on how their personal values impact on their lives. This was so well received that the trainer Russell Hobbs has since delivered a similar session to two other chambers in Yorkshire as well as at our National Conference this year. Other sessions in our program included First Aid Training which we have since heard some members have used the skills they learned. Developing public speaking skills has historically been a significant and important part of the JCI personal development program and this year has been no exception. We have run training on improvisation as an introduction into other more traditional forms of training in this area that included extempore ‘off the cuff ’ public speaking training, debating training run in partnership with JCI Rotherham as well as public speaking skills. We were delighted to host the JCI Yorkshire Regional Extempore Competition this year. Our member Steph Smith then went on to win the Extempore competition this year at 2015 JCI UK National Conference and the Sheffield team also won the National Debating Championships too (with a little help from Rotherham who lent us Charlotte for our team!) Our members also got the chance to attend national training courses held by JCI UK including Marketing Academy, Public Speaking Academy and LEAP Academy (Leadership Excellence in Action Program). Several of our members also joined the training team for LEAP again this year. We are delighted that our 2016 President Gareth Carson will be taking on the role as LEAP Director for 2016. On an international level, our President Mark ran sessions at both European Conference in Turkey and World Congress in Japan and is looking forward to delivering even more training next year as part of the JCI UK National Training Team. Other sessions we have put on this year for our membership have included a nutrition and health workshop, negotiation skills training and even a session on CV writing and interview techniques too. We can’t wait for our members to see what training sessions will be on offer in 2016 based on what you have told us so far.

A Year of

Business The JCI vision is to ‘be the global network of young active citizens’ and provide members with the opportunity to grow their network and build connections locally, nationally and internationally. This year we continued to hold our popular monthly informal ‘Networking Wednesday’ events and found a new venue for these at the fantastic Bloo88 on West Street, Sheffield. Bloo88 who are now a ‘friend of JCI Sheffield’ Patron, was the venue for our official after party following the annual dinner which was a brilliant sucess. We are pleased to say that Ryan Stutchbury from Bloo88 will be part of the 2016 Council Team taking on the role of 2016 Business and Strategic Partnerships Director. One of the highlights of the year was welcoming representatives from the office of the USA Ambassador for the UK to Sheffield on a fact finding mission, which was then followed by a visit from the USA Ambassador himself Matthew Barzun. Our President Mark Smith joined the Ambassador with other City Leaders for a working lunch to forge links and share good practice. We have held a variety of business tours and talks with Numill Tooling Solutions and OutuKumpu where members got to see the legacy of the steel making industry in which Sheffield founded its famous name “The Steel City”. Our award winning partnership with the RISE Sheffield graduate intern program has continued to go from strength to strength this year and has given us the opportunity to offer trial memberships to many interns based in small medium enterprises in Sheffeld. RISE 8 has begun and we can’t wait to see the new interns experience JCI. Our members have had the chance to hear inspirational talks from people aorund Sheffield and around the UK. Kate Hewett, Head of Marketing and Progamming for the famous Tramlines Festival gave us an insight into this popular and ever evolving event and Jon Covey talked to us about how we can overcome obscurity. To help share the best kept secret of Sheffield that is JCI some of the members of the 2015 Council Team went around the city handing out leaflets to local business. The Business Academy concept is currently being developed with plans being made to run the pilot academy in 2016. Be sure to keep your diarys at the ready so you can attend what is sure to be the business event of the year! As the year comes to an end we have plans to to help our members build their networks even further, make connections and build their confidence. Keep your eyes pealed for what our diary holds for 2016!

A Year of

Community

2015 has been an incredible year and one that I’m extremely proud of! We had the ambitious challenge of supporting 4 charities. These charities were all chosen by our members and reflected local and national organisations. We chose RSPCA Sheffield, Age UK Sheffield, SAFE@LAST and Nothing But Nets. But how did we support these charities? By raising vital funds which keep the organisations doing what they do best and making an impact! We did this with our Nothing but Nets Bingo, our brilliant Afternoon Tea, Annual Dinner raffle and the Bake Off to name but a few. We aimed to raise £100 for each charity and smashed it! But its easy to talk about money (which is important!) but we also wanted to give our charities a little more than that and aimed to try giving them our time in various ways. Gareth ran 10k without any training, we’ve helped train service users for Age UK, we baked cakes, volunteered for SAFE@LAST and walked the Yorkshire Three Peaks and volunteered for the RSPCA. Some of our members even fostered and adopted anmials! We then in the later half of the year ran our Small Grants Scheme where we gave money to local organisations then held a birthday party to present the cheques and to celebrate JCI’s 100th Year! But all of the above wouldn’t be possible without the passion and dedication of our members The time, the money and sheer excellence of the people of our fantastic organisation making an impact and always aiming to #bethechange. For our Christmas Appeal we are working with the RSPCA Sheffield Branch by collection pet food for cats and dogs. This food will help save a pets life this Christmas and a little goes a long way. If you would like to help out but can’t make it to our Christmas Social then don’t worry! You can have a collection at work and we will arrange a pick up for you. If you want to help out but can’t colllect the food then we are offering a donate option. Simply text JCIR88 to 70070 to donate £3 to the RSPCA Sheffield Branch so they can purchase food for the animals. And finally, our 2015 Community Action Director Neal Stirk wanted to say “thank you to everyone who helped make all our communtiy work possible. What makes me most proud is seeing the difference our hard work makes in our local community and how a little kindness goes along way”.

Text JCIR88 to 70070 to donate ÂŁ3 to the RSPCA Sheffield Branch. Thank You

A Year of

International This year JCI Sheffield has proudly joined in recognising the 100 years anniversary since the JCI movement was founded globally. Several of our members visited Istanbul, Turkey for European Conference in June where we were over the moon to have picked up three European awards including Best Local Economic Development Program (for our RISE project), Best Local Skills Development Program (for our Be Better and Be The Change training program) and Most Oustanding Local Project (for our RISE project). The conference allowed us to build our networks on an international level, take part in training sessions and of course take part in the cultural parties. Our President Mark Smith also made his international training debut, delivering JCI Effective Communications course which was very well received. We also got the opportunity to experience some of the culture of the city, taking an open top sightseeing bus tour. During the year we were pleased to take part in a twinning visit to Ireland to stay with members from JCI Mayo and then hosted a visit by them to our Steel City. During both visits, we held training session, had a positive impact on the local community by volunteering at the MSPCA in Ireland and the RSPCA in Sheffield as well as socialising and sharing best practice. Some of the highlights from the twinning weekends were playing ‘Splat Ball’ in Ireland (a bit like paint balling) and taking part in ‘Go Ape’ in Buxton, a tree top adventure course. We were delighted to be present at the JCI Scotland National Conference along with other members from Yorkshire. Our President Mark Smith even won the Scottish National Extempore (off the cuff) public speaking competition! This year JCI World Congress was held in Kanazawa, Japan. The event was atteneded by 15,000 members from around the world all ready to celebrate the centenary year of the JCI Movement. Our members took the opportunity to build on their networks within JCI, make the connections for 2016 alongside attending training sessions, key note speakers, business tours and of course the socials! We helped to represent the UK Debating Team with Mark and the team came runners up in the final! Mark also got the opportunity to deliver his ‘introduction to event management’ training course in Japan. Once you attend your first international JCI event you simply can not wait for the next one. It’s at these events that you truly get to experience the size of the global organisation. You leave with a positive energy that inspired you to get more involved in your local chamber and make an impact in the community. We were pleased to offer bursaries that several members took up to help enable them to go to international events. Next year, JCI European Conference will be held in Tampere in Finland on the 15th-18th June 2016; JCI World Congress will be held in Québec, Canada 30th October - 4th November 2016.

A Year of

Social We all love a good social event and JCI Sheffeld this year has seen many! Working hard and being an active citizen has to have some down time too. We have continued to focus on membership engagement this year and part of our approach to keep members motivated and active is to offer a range of social activities. We’ve hosted and attended socials with members from our twin chamber JCI Mayo (Ireland) during the twinning weekends where we went for meals and drinks. We’ve arranged trips to the local theatre, a street dance and drama workshop and also a ghost walk as slightly different events to some of the usual pub visits that JCI can be known for. Regionally we have attended all sorts of events including the JCI Yorkshire Wharfedale Quiz in Barnsley, JCI Barnsley annual train pub crawl from Barnsley to Harrogate, prosecco and picnic event by JCI Doncaster and Harrogate day by the local chamber. These activities have helped further develop friendships, networks and connections whilst having fun. 2015 also marked the year to hold the Past Presidents ‘Lustrum Dinner’, held every five years. Peter Bennet-Keenan started this tradition back in 1965. This year’s event saw 30 Past Presidents attend, the earliest was Brian Viner who was 1964-1965 President. As per tradition, guests sat around a large rectangle banquet table, enjoying a lavish meal and then heard from President Mark Smith about the latest developments from JCI Sheffeld over the last five years as well as former Sheffeld President Kate Senter who was 2014 National President for JCI UK. This special event also gave us the opportunity to reconnect with former Presidents and members and as a result, we have been able to feature some of them in our monthly magazine, organised a debating contest between former members and current members and devise the Five Weirs Walk project after learning that it was JCI Sheffield that created this walk years ago. To celebrate the centenary year of the JCI Movement we hosted a Birthday Party for JCI. The event was attended by members from around Yorkshire along with attendees from various charities in Sheffield who applied for the Small Grants Scheme earlier on in the year. The event was a brlliant success and reminded us all of why we joined the organisation, what we want to achieve and how far we have travelled thanks to the JCI experience. Cake, pass the parcel, video screenings and some minglng made for a great birhtday celebration! To end the year we have our Christmas Social this Saturday at The Couch on Campo Lane, Sheffield. Join us in celebrating what a fantastic year 2015! More information is on the following pages. We hope to see you there in your best Christmas jumper!

Meet a Member

Now that you’ve met the JCI Sheffield Council Team it’s time to start meeting our members! This time we chat to Catherine Hastings Name: Catherine Hastings How long have you been a member of JCI? Probably about four months. How did you find out about JCI? I know Mark (Smith) as I used to work with him at Victim Support and he had been telling me all the great things he gets to do with JCI and encouraging me to give it a try so I could no longer resist! What are your hobbies? I do various things in my spare time, mostly involving eating Japanese food but also volunteering for FoodCycle a charity that cooks a vegetarian meal from surplus food for vulnerable or socially isolated people in the community. Why JCI for you? I was really interested in joining as the training provided looked really professional. I was also interested in meeting new people that perhaps I wouldn’t ordinarily meet. What has been your favourite event (So Far!) and why? I haven’t been to many events but I think my favourite so far was the street dance session, it was a bit of fun and exercise and just something I wouldn’t have done otherwise. Tell us something crazy/dangerous/inspiring/unusual you have done I’m not massively into dangerous/crazy things but I did swim lake Windermere for charity a couple of years ago which was at the time rather terrifying and freezing. Most embarrassing moment: I can’t think of an embarrassing moment - I think this says more about my memory though than the lack of embarrassing moments in my life! I have been likened to Miranda on more than one occasion. What is your occupation? I have just qualified as an Occupational Therapist and am looking to set up a position in partnership with my local church developing the church to make it more sustainable. Has JCI had any impact on your job/career/profession/business? I enjoyed the training on organising events and put to use some of the techniques suggested when organising some Christmas events recently. I am aiming to attend the Networking events soon and hope to meet more members and gain more out of being a member. Claim to Fame? I know Mark Smith - I have heard he is famous in JCI circles? Keeps winning things too apparently. Would you recommend JCI to your friends? Yes definitely, although I probably need to engage more in the future to get more out of being a member; however, I believe its ideals are really admirable and it seems to build strong networks between positive people to allow them to achieve great things!

Meet Our Newest Senator, #74665 Dan Senter Hi Dan, when did you first join JCI? I joined JCI in 2009 after attending a training session on personality styles. I can’t believe how fast the last 6 years have flown by...

What made you join? I was looking for ways to further develop and gain experience outside of my current field of employment, where I was in construction at the time. Meeting so many like minded people all keen to push themselves, meet new people and help get involved in helping others in the areas seemed like a great fit. I also met a couple of really inspirational people on my first few events and wanted to be part of it! What roles have you taken on within the organisation? I’ve been involved locally and nationally; Local Personal Development Director, Local Deputy President, Local President, Local Past President, National Project Manager - LEAP, National Admin Director and now I am on the National Training Team as a trainer. Do you have a favourite? I think all of the roles have given me very unique experiences and opportunities to learn... It’s hard to pick a favourite but I think the National Project Manager role was one of my favourites. It was great to work with members from different trainers across the UK and in my project we also involved people from the Netherlands which made it even more interesting. How has JCI impacted your life? JCI has helped to make me the person I am today... I’m no longer the person who sneaks into the back of a room hoping no one will speak to me, afraid of speaking out. I’m now stood at the front presenting, sharing ideas, helping others and building my own network; not afraid to try new things and enjoying the challenge!!

https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=bb08d72979&view=fimg&th=151abad4df85d7cd&attid=0.1&disp=inline&safe=1&attbid=ANGjdJ_EyE-REszGJtellWGsqs_KmrX9V2d-vWmmMUQF2Ej1RY2F_FtdBwRW3Fmywz8qPV1ydICJfYYjJkXqJiXvclmQEs3SVuepqSdTNxeLXb9VNJ566w9D1rurjX0&ats=1450284243509&rm=151abad4df85d7cd&zw&sz=w1240-h696 What has been your biggest learning from being a JCI member? The only person who can change the future is you, so you must do all you can to make it want you want it to be. You don’t get a second chance at living your life, so make it the best one it can be! Congratulations on being awarded Senatorship! How does it feel to be a Senator? Makes me feel old :-( But also humbled to have been recognised for my support of the organisation. For members who may not know, can you describe what a Senator is? Senators are life long members of JCI, they are awarded this title to recognise the impact they have made on the organisation in helping to leave a legacy to support JCI’s continued support of its members. The senators of JCI across the world have a wealth of knowledge and experience, so offer a great way for members to learn from and in turn help to shape the future. What are your next steps? Now as a senator I see myself very much as a coach and a mentor for future leaders joining JCI. Obviously I’m still a member too, so I’ll be staying involved supporting one of my favourite areas in personal development and training! What advice would you give to budding JCI members? It’s better to regret something you’ve done than to regret something you haven’t done, so go grab the opportunities that JCI will throw at you!! Dan Senter Senator #74665
