I can’t quite believe we have reached the start of the final quarter of 2015! Time certainly flies when you are having fun and of course making an impact, which is what we have been focusing on in Sheffield over the last year.

This month marks a very special occasion - on 13th we will be celebrating 100 years to the day that the JCI global movement was founded. What an absolute honour and privilege to be part of such a wonderful organisation that is all about creating positive change. We will be celebrating in Sheffield by hosting a birthday party at Bloo88 on 13th October and hope many of you will be able to join us. Not to give too much away, but we will be delighted to be joined by The Lord Mayor of Sheffield and representatives from various local community and voluntary groups who have been successful in being awarded funds from our small grants scheme as part of our project impact 100 program.

In September, we hosted the JCI UK National AGM and welcomed members from other chambers form all over the country to the Steel City. We took them on a spooky ghost walk around Sheffield City Centre and then wined and dined them at our Through The Decades Annual Dinner at the prestigious Cutlers’ Hall. I felt very proud to speak at the dinner, reviewing the achievements of JCI Sheffield to date this year and to recognise what we have achieved to BE THE CHANGE this year.

The National AGM went well - a massive well done to JCI Sheffield member Katie Jackson who will serve as 2016 National Community Director for JCI UK and to Gareth and Neal for successfully pitching for JCI Sheffield to host the JCI UK Inspiration Day on 30th January 2016 in Sheffield! Congratulations to Michael Steel from JCI Southampton who won the election for 2016 Deputy National President who will be serving alongside 2016 National President Sarah Beckwith (from JCI London), Ben Hawley 2016 National Membership & Growth Director (from JCI Barnsley) and James Lambert 2016 National Personal Development Director (from JCI Southampton) on National Board. There may be an additional Sheffield representation too shortly!

There is still so much to look forward to: JCI Yorkshire Regional Conference and Awards Dinner on 17th October, our first Business Academy on 24th & 25th October, World Congress in Japan in November followed by the JCI UK National Conference and National Awards and then of course planning for another amazing year next year with the 2016 Council Team there is still time to get involved if you are interested in taking a role next year, do get in touch with Gareth Carson 2015 Deputy President.

So as well take the step in to our last quarter of 2015, I am starting to think about what 2016 holds for the chamber.

The theme for next year is to Achieve Awesome. I think this fits nicely with our 2016 National President’s theme of Choose Exttrodonary. I am sure you can all agree our current president Mark Smith has done an amazing job this year with Be The Change and I have some large shoes to fill.

I have had interest from some fantastic members who are willing to represent members of the chamber on the council team next year in 2016. I know with their passion for the chamber we will have a storming year.

Over the 100 years JCI has changed in many ways and we are again on the cusp of change. We offer a fantastic opportunity to new people out there who haven’t heard of us. I would personally like to start a campaign this year in Sheffield called Talk JCI where we will share our experiences and skills gained from the chamber to the people of Sheffield. If you are a past member, a present member or someone who is thinking about joining, I am asking you to share your stories and experiences with others. On our website we have a blogging facility something that I know is very popular in this technical age. Why not write a blog and share it with us so we can post it on our website. This can be anything from your first JCI experience or about how JCI has helped you develop personally and professionally. If you would like to do this please write you blog and send it to ryan.pilkington@ jcisheffield.org.uk who will up load this.

I am also holding some focus groups towards the end of the year where I would love current members, past members JCI Sheffield senators to come along and tell us what you would like to see in 2016. Hopefully I will have some of JCI Sheffield 2016 council team candidates there for you to find out what their plans are and how they can support you achieve your goals with the chamber.

JCI Sheffield is the oldest active chamber in the country we have been running for 88 years and as we enter our 89th I want to invite members from the past to re engage with the chamber and tell us about things they did in their day be that 2 years ago or 50 years ago it’s all important.

I would also like to take this moment to thank so many people for their support at our recent annual dinner especially our sponsors. You will see some adverts coming from them in this issue and the next few issues.

We will be looking for some charities to support through 2016 and will be holding an evening where those interested can pitch to a panel of members to help make a choice. If you know a charity that is close to your heart that might be interested please tell them to get in touch via my email or if you would be interested in being on the panel please drop me a message.

If you would like to get some experience for your CV this year from JCI or just some professional development please have a think. We have project team leader roles for any projects you might like to do this is a great chance to experience something in a safe environment with support of loads of other people around you helping.

I personally wouldn’t be where I am today without JCI and a lot of the skills I have gained came from partaking in Public Speaking, Extempore and Debating. I can say I never put my hand up to go into these things it just kind of happened however the skills and confidence I have gained out of these have helped me progress in the development of my own business and confidence when dealing with employers and employees. I am looking a setting up a debating club and a public speaking club if you would be interested in either of these please let me know.

This is the year that I feel the chamber can take the next step into the future however to do that our chamber needs you.

Yes I was. I joined when I first arrived in Sheffield in 1989 from London to help stage the World University Games as a young guy, and it was an opportunity to meet young minded business people.

What attracted you to joining JCI?

It proved to be a stepping stone to join larger business forums and ultimately the Sheffield Chamber where I became the President in 2010/11.

We were always supportive of having the JCI involved with the Chamber.

Whats your favourite memory from when you were a member?

I actually was awarded a gift for being the most active member (I think) for the year in 1990

You are involved with the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and currently sit on the Chamber Council. What made you want to get involved?

Individuals can make a difference but a co-ordinated group of individuals can make transformational changes to their City and useful to have JCI members to inform leaders and politicians about what if feels like to be in business in the City or an entrepreneur, etc. at the coal face. Senior leaders have different experiences to those of the workforce and often get told things they want to hear. At JCI level, you can give a grass roots perspective of business life in the City and what needs to improve and what is good, and bad!

Meet a Member Now that you’ve met the JCI Sheffield Council Team it’s time to start meeting our members! This time we chat to Helen Pine!

Name: Helen Pine How long have you been a member of JCI? About a week :/ How did you find out about JCI? I heard about it through a friend/colleague.

He may have engaged in some mild pestering to get me to join.

What are your hobbies?

I am a bit of a craft geek and I love learning new things and trying out new activities.

My most recent effort was wet felting. It might sound like I have confessed to engaging in something a little bit rude there but I promise it is just a wool based craft! I have also tried screen printing, jewellery making and crochet. This means that I have quite a few half finished projects at home. I do love cooking though, so that could be another hobby and I have no problem finishing food!

Why JCI for you?

I suppose it’s a bit of what I said above, that I like to try new things. JCI will help me develop new skills and expand my horizons but hopefully will involve less clutter being bought to gather dust in my spare room. Also, I have a strong commitment to social justice so the community aspect of JCI really appeals to me.

What has been your favourite event (So Far!) and why?

I have only been to one event so far, which was ‘Everyday Improvisation’. This was lots of fun and really helped me overcome some anxiety I had about an upcoming presentation and networking event.

Tell us something crazy/dangerous/inspiring/unusual you have done Last November, I walked across the Sahara desert to help raise funds for SAFE@LAST. I completed the challenge alongside JCI members Mark Smith and Dan Senter, so you can find out more about it on Mark’s blog: http://www.jcisheffield.org.uk/blog/2014/11/not-a-miragejci-sheffield-members-trekacross-the-sahara-desert-for-safelast/ It was a great experience and a great cause.

Most embarrassing moment: My life is a series of embarassing moments! If you ask me in person, I might tell you about some of them in a less public forum.

What is your occupation?

I’m a youth worker, currently masquerading as an academic (I’m in the process of completing my PhD).

I have spent most of my career in the third sector working with young homeless people and this formed the basis of my research. I am looking forward now to applying my research findings back into practice.

Has JCI had any impact on your job/career/profession/business?

A week’s membership doesn’t give much chance to assess any impact but I am sure I will get a lot from my membership in the future. I did win an award for my presentation after the ‘Everday Improvisation‘ workshop so maybe my experience at the event gave me the edge.

Claim to Fame?

I once sat next to Ultimate Kaos in Burger King!! This will only make sense to connoisseurs of early ‘90s boybands. It’s a pretty niche claim to fame to be honest. Also, Chesney Hawkes once touched my cheek.

Question: Am I still allowed to be in the JCI when my entire frame of reference seems to be based on the music of two decades ago? Yes :) Would you recommend JCI membership to your friends?

Annual Dinner Raffle The annual dinner this year was a huge success and a great chance to showcase all that we’ve done in the last 12 months. But its also a great chance to raise a little money for local causes.

From Raffling off some brilliant locally donated prizes we managed to raise over £400 which we’ve split between 3 of our local charities (RSPCA, Age UK Sheffield, SAFE@LAST) and MS Trust!

I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated prizes including The Forum Group and Forgebake House to name but two. Without theirs and your help it wouldn’t be possible to

The Bake Off at the Moor Market On the 19th of September JCI Sheffield held their first Bake Off at the Moor Market. We had an array of cakes and goodies for sale at 50p per item with each 50p counting as a vote for that baker. It was a great event as we raised some vital funds for Age UK Sheffield but we also managed to talk to quite a number of public about the work they do and what JCI do! But most importantly we had some fun!

We sold quite a lot of cakes and biscuits from a range of members and council team members including Stephanie Smith, Mark Smith, Gareth Carson, Ryan Pilkington, Neal Stirk, Brogan O’Callaghan and Helen Pine! On the day the cupcakes and Lemon drizzle sold the fastest. But there our winners were Neal Stirk an Gareth Carson who go on to the regional event where they will bake Yorkshire themed goodies.

In total on the day we raised £75.55 which is a great addition to the funds raised earlier this year. It all goes to help a fantastic charity and enable them to carry on doing the vital work that they do in our local community.

The Small Grants Scheme This year At JCI Sheffield we’ve been in an extremely fortunate position where we could award a handful of local charities vital funds to go towards the brilliant work they do. We asked the charities to fill out a simple application form asking about them, how they want to use the money and how it will impact 100 peoples lives.

We had two categories Gold which grants of £100 and Platinum of £500. The platinum grant we also asked the charities to come in give a short presentation about how they would use the money and answer some questions. The presentations were all great and it made deciding who got the grant much harder but after lengthy discussions we decided on Sheffield 50 plus!

We were amazed by the work they do and the work they want to do with the money. We’re also very excited about working with them in the future.

All of the cheques for the winners will be awarded at our 100th Birthday Party at Bloo88 on the 13th Of October. Please come along and join us to celebrate 100 years of making an impact and toast to hopefully another 100 years!

This year sees the launch of the very first Business Academy for JCI Sheffield. The event will take place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October, at the Sheffield Hallam Business School (in the centre of the city), and will be a jam packed weekend of high quality training for business owners and business professionals in the local community. The training will range from strategy, management and leadership skills, customer experience and much more! This will give attendees a wide set of skills and techniques that will aid them in their day-to-day working life, whilst also enabling them to build their network with other like-minded individuals.

Every one starting a business needs a platform to network and gain skills and if they are looking to move up the career ladder within an already established business it will give them the tools and confidence to do so.

Hannah Bailey Hannah recently did a nutrition talk for us at the Holiday Inn focusing aorund good nutrition and mental health. Mental Health Week Sheffield is this week (5th - 11th October) and we had a sit down with Hannah to talk about how food and mental health is linked, what one of the best foods are to help maintain good mental health and more!

What is your name and occupation?

Hannah Bailey, Nutritionist When did you join JCI? Joined JCI in 2013 Why did you join?

Joined to meet like minded individuals and broaden my social network as well as access some of the amazing training JCI puts on.

You recently did a nutrition session for us, what would you say is one of the best foods for overall health?

One of the best foods for overall health is definitely avocado. Can be eaten by meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike and it’s full of nutrition. It’s also very versatile.

What foods help maintain good mental health?

Foods that are important for mental health are also avocados, oily fish, nuts and seeds, vegetables.

Basically lots of real foods and avoiding the processed ones which tend not to have much nutritional value What is the link with nutrition and mental health?

Nutrition and mental health are very closely linked because of the way the brain reacts to food but also the food we eat affects how we feel. For example, something sugary might make you feel good short term but in the slightly longer term, when we have the sugar crash then typically people start to feel a bit down. Junk food affects our gut which is hugely important in mental health.

Can you tell us some interesting mental health fact?

An interesting mental health fact is that poor mental health increases the risk of getting ill from other diseases too Can you tell us a surprising food/nutrition fact?

An interesting food fact is avocado is the only naturally occurring food which contains fat, protein and some carbohydrate.

Spotlight on a Trainer with Sarah Beckwith My training journey in JCI started back in 2009 thanks to two wonderful JCI Trainers – Adam Woodhall and Dan Lally. They ran both JCI Presenter and JCI Trainer in London that year. For me the benefits of improving my public speaking confidence were obvious, which is why I did Presenter. I’d never really thought about becoming a trainer myself, but knew that the course would be interesting and fun, so went along, more for the chance to continue practising public speaking than anything else.

Following the course, I never would have got up the courage to actually start training myself if it hadn’t been for the fabulous Solveig Malvik, who encouraged me to dive right in and start training with her. We developed a networking skills course and started training in JCI London. Solveig and I have very different personalities and skill sets and this works so well when we train together. It’s lots of fun training with her and I always learn something new.

I eventually started training debating on my own, then developed some of my own courses based on my own experiences in project leadership, negotiation and public speaking.

For me the magic thing about training is seeing the difference you’ve made to someone you’ve trained. Either in very visible terms, for example from the beginning to end of a public speaking session or perhaps sometime afterwards when a delegate comes up to you and tells you that something you taught them in a training session helped them somehow.

One of my greatest experiences as a JCI Trainer was being part of the training team at the European Academy in Sweden in 2014. Having been a delegate in 2010 it was actually quite nerve-wracking to go back and be the one facilitating part of the academy. Our team of trainers spent three days together in the Swedish forest getting ready (following many Skype calls before that) and I once again learnt so much from each member of my team and came out a more skilled and confident trainer because of that experience.

I’m very lucky to have had the chance train this summer in JCI Denmark with Solveig and I’ll also be training at the JCI Finland Convention in October. International training is definitely something I’m keen to continue, maybe putting forward one of my own sessions for an international conference at some point in the future.

It’s been a good year and we in JCI Sheffield have much to celebrate. We’ve achieved a lot as a chamber and changed a lot as individuals and there’s nowhere better to celebrate a collective change and achievement better than the Annual Dinner.

This has been a special one celebrating JCI’s 100th birthday so we went the extra mile and it was held at the Sheffield Cutlers Hall. Quite possibly the most premiere venue in Sheffield.

It was a special event not just for JCI 100th birthday but because a lot of Senators and past members also managed to attend so it was brilliant seeing that the chamber had a lot of support and we still had strong ties with our past. We also had quite a few new members there, which was great to see some of the hands that JCI will be in the future.

The food was brilliant, the company better, and the proceedings brilliant. We also had speeches from Lesley Young European Executive Vice President and Previous National President but also from Drew Charman National President, Mark Smith JCI Sheffield President and we raised money for good causes too.

We also at JCI know how to let our hair down and after the end of formal proceedings the drinks began to flow with many of our friends from chambers in Yorkshire, London and as far as Southampton and Ireland! We had a lot support and a lot of fun. A few of which managed to dance until the hotel started serving breakfast!

For me though personally the highlight was MC-ing the night with Gareth. MC-ing was something I wanted to aim for earlier on in the year and I knew back then as I did 5 minutes before welcoming everyone in the room that it was well beyond my comfort zone. But it being well beyond my comfort zone is where I wanted to be. JCI is about pushing yourself beyond the confines of your comfort zone to quote phrases that have been used a lot this year “getting comfortable being uncomfortable” and “Learn by doing”. I can honestly say having done it I would do it again.

All in all it was a great night for JCI Sheffield and for me personally. But the best part was being able celebrate with Friends what has so far been a fantastic year.
