architecture is experienced and lived rather than known. i’d rather people feel a film before understanding it. i’d rather feelings come before intellect.
table of contents: nest barrio fabric timber in the city: no haven
nest in this project a higher education institution moved onto a site with an historical building and a parking garage. to accomodate program needs, both the historic building and the parking garage were needed. one of the first obstacles was making the parking garage shift from serving cars to serving people. to accomplish this, volumes created at human scale were inserted into the parking garage. the next step was to unify the historical and the garage in order to present a whole institution.

barrio fabric barrio fabric is a fashion incubator looking to open a new location in an historic neighborhood in tucsan. fabric, the incubator, is heavily involved in their community wherever they are, so there had to be spaces for the public to be engaged. the site has a fourteen foot height maximum, but programatically, more space was needed. space was dug out and the interior core of the project became a public space and a way to get natural light into the basement of the facility.
timber in the city: no haven timber in the city was a competition to build a high rise residence in queens, new york out of mass timber, showing that mass timber could be used at a large scale. in addition to the residence, a public fitness center and an early childhood education center, and a waterfront park were included. considering the amount that was being given to the public, it seemed important that the project tie into the city rather than treating itself as an island to serve only the residents within. All doors are found near each other so that all users had the chance for interaction
“No normal person can spend [their] life in some artificial haven.” - Jane Jacobs
This project seeks to make sure that there is no such haven being created. Each entrance point is signified by a corner lift. All entrances are found here. Residents have no in-house shortcuts – they have to go through the same doors as anyone else. As they do they meet with the people of their community using the Community Center or the School. They have to use the streets bringing a liveliness to them instead of a dull gray area to be used only by those who are residents.
