Letter from the President and Board Chair Dear Friends and Supporters, While it is understandable that the unprecedented realities of 2020 consume a good portion of our thoughts, I hope you will appreciate the opportunity to pause and reflect on the positive impact of the College of Coastal Georgia Foundation during 2019. In 2019, the Foundation partnered with the College to promote student success and advance the mission of the College. Through student scholarships, support for faculty development, funding for new academic program equipment, community dialog facilitation, and support for our athletic teams, the Foundation and donors provided impactful and critical support to the College. As you—trustees, donors, and alumni—invested in the College throughout the year, the Mariner family was nurtured and strengthened. Financial pressures on students were lessened, new opportunities were maximized, and new academic programs and resources enriched the scholarly life of the College. We can look back on 2019 as a year of progress and success. As you read through this report, join us in celebrating all that was accomplished during 2019. As you read the stories of the many ways in which the Foundation benefited Coastal Georgia students, I hope you will appreciate how your generosity is making a meaningful difference. This annual report is, by its very nature, a look back. However, we also want to invite you to join us in looking ahead. Despite the considerable challenges of 2020, we are committed to providing our students with the high-quality education they deserve and the support they need to succeed. With your continued support and financial gifts through the Foundation, the College will continue to expand its positive contributions to our students, our community, and our world.

On behalf of all who benefit from your support, guidance, and investment, we offer our sincerest gratitude. Thank you for being our partner in helping the College of Coastal Georgia advance its mission to make an affordable, high-quality education accessible to all. Sincerely,

Michelle R. Johnston, Ph.D. President College of Coastal Georgia

Through our funding of these scholarships, we intend not only to show the College as an important institution in this community, but to thank them for partnering with us in this endeavor.

—Sea Island Property Owners Association President Terry Bridges

Sea Island Property Owners Assocation member Bob Guido presents a certificate to Rebecca Gillmore, one of the inaugural SIPOA scholarship recipients.

The mission of the Radiologic Science Program at the College of Coastal Georgia is to provide a quality education such that students will become competent, entry-level radiographers.

Students have access to state-of-the art equipment to prepare them for future careers.

Forging New Paths Creating Opportunities Through Scholarships For many students, securing a scholarship can mean the difference between continuing on the path to success or having one’s dreams derailed. Through the generous donations of community members and friend-raising by the College of Coastal Georgia Foundation, Coastal Georgia students receive the additional financial support they need to stay on track toward their degrees and ultimately reach their goals. In 2019, the creation of new scholarships expanded the College’s ability to help meet the tuition shortfalls many students experience. Four of the College’s newest scholarships are highlighted below.

The Ron and Carla Kalil Scholarship Endowment Fund was created to assist motivated students earning an Associate of Science in Radiologic Science. The program helps students develop the knowledge and skills required to become effective members of a healthcare team. Students learn to respond ethically to the needs of the patient with technical competence and compassion. The scholarship will be awarded annually to two deserving students who have completed the first year of the program, are in good academic standing, and have demonstrated a financial need. The Sea Island Property Owners Association (SIPOA) Scholarship is awarded to Sea Island employees or family members of employees attending the College of Coastal Georgia. The first recipients were honored with a reception in July. The first SIPOA scholars included Rebecca Gillmore, Monica Linares, Crystal Stoyanoff, Rubi Calix, and Chase Cody.

During the reception, SIPOA President Terry Bridges said, “Through our funding of these scholarships, we intend not only to show the College as an important institution in this community, but to thank them for partnering with us in this endeavor.”

The Ben Turnipseed Family Endowment Scholarship was created to benefit pre-engineering students earning an associate’s degree. Ben Turnipseed is the chairman of Turnipseed Engineers and serves as chairman of the Brunswick-Glynn County Joint Water and Sewer Commission. He has made many contributions to the engineering field throughout his career. The scholarship will help students have a solid academic foundation that will prepare them for an engineering program at another institution and, ultimately, for a career in the field of engineering. The Ann and C. Neil Glasscock Scholarship highlights the importance of effective communication in all careers. The scholarship assists students majoring in American Studies with a concentration in cultural studies and communication. Preference is given to students entering their junior year who, in an application essay, can demonstrate the importance of English mastery in identifying facts, comprehending ideas, and ensuring effective communication.

Staying on Course Coastal Georgia Athletics Remains Focused on the Goal In 2019, the College of Coastal Georgia Department of Athletics completed three major fundraising events to benefit Mariner student-athletes. Funds raised support travel to tournaments as well as lodging and meal expenses uniform purchases; practice and training equipment costs; support for coaches and athletic staff; and awards and recognition for championship teams.

Coastal Georgia exceeded its goal and the funds were in-hand to send the team to the competition. However, due to the unforeseen cancellation of the remainder of the season, the funds have been set aside to be used for another tournament in the 2020-2021 season. Coach Mike Cook hopes the funds will be used to defend their title at the Battle at Primm in 2021.

Coastal Georgia Athletics held its first Mariner Golf outing to benefit both the men’s and women’s golf teams in May. During the outing, the women’s team also celebrated their invitation to participate in the 2019 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament. At that time, they ranked 22 in the NAIA. Sophomore Kylee Wheeler placed 49th at the national tournament and was selected as a member of the NAIA All-American third team. The men’s golf team was ranked No. 1 in the NAIA and finished the tournament in second place. Three NAIA All-Americans were named from the men’s team, including Mark David Johnston who was the NAIA’s Individual National Champion, as well as the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year. Thanks to the help of donors, the golf teams started 2020 on a hot streak.

The Athletics Department’s third fundraising event of 2019 was the Coach Cox Court Challenge. Coach Gerald F. Cox served the College of Coastal Georgia from 1982-2014 in several roles, including athletic director, physical education instructor, and men’s basketball head coach. In each of his roles, he had a lasting and positive impact on the lives of the hundreds of students and student-athletes he served during his tenure at the College. As a result of his significant impact on the school and community, the College honored Coach Cox by naming him “Men’s Basketball Head Coach Emeritus” upon his retirement in 2014. In 2019, the College again honored Coach Cox by naming the Coffin Gym basketball floor the “Coach Gerald Cox Court.” The court was officially dedicated to Coach Cox in a special ceremony in January 2020. Thanks to the support of Mariner fans and friends of the College, the College will be able to redesign the basketball court to bear the name “Coach Cox Court” and encourage the championship tradition Coach Cox built at the College.

The second fundraising event of 2019 focused on sending the men’s golf team to the Battle at Primm in Nevada to defend their title. The Battle at Primm is one of the most exclusive, competitive collegiate golfing events and is by invitation only.

12

“The Department of Athletics owes a great deal of gratitude to the Foundation’s trustees for their support of all these fundraising efforts,” said Athletics Director Dr. William Carlton. “We could not have accomplished everything we did in 2019 without the Foundation’s support. The trustees’ generous donation of time, talents, and treasure made these achievements possible. Our studentathletes and coaches know that they benefit directly from the Foundation’s support. On their behalf, I offer a sincere ‘Thank you.’”

The women’s golf team celebrates their invitation to participate in the 2019 NAIA tournament.

Coach Gerald F. Cox had a lasting and positive impact during his tenure at the College from 1982-2014.

The men’s golf team continues to be a competitive leader in the NAIA.

We are thankful for Pinova’s support of STEM in the community and their recognition of the potential many students possess for future careers in STEM. —Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Director of the STEM Outreach Program Dr. Courtenay Miller

Supporting the Journey to Academic Excellence Corporate Sponsorships Encourage New Learning Experiences Pinova

Georgia Power Foundation

Pinova takes great pride in its strong relationship with the local community and makes efforts to uphold this relationship through active support of programs that improve the quality of life for residents— especially those that enrich education and the environment. Because of this, Pinova is dedicated to helping students explore interests in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Pinova presented the College of Coastal Georgia with a check for $5,000 to fund the current STEM Outreach Program at the College. The outreach program provides STEM experiences for elementary, middle, and high school students. The program hosts two main events each year—Expanding Your Horizons and the Math and Sciences Expo. Coastal Georgia students also get involved with the events by facilitating team building exercises, assisting professors with activities, and volunteering in various capacities. This gives college students an opportunity to give back to the local community. Pinova’s donation allows activities to remain available for area students, and encourages students to broaden their understanding of future careers and improve their STEM skills.

The Georgia Power STEM Impact Program continues to be a successful partnership between the College and the Georgia Power Foundation. The Georgia Power Foundation has been improving and strengthening educational initiatives to help students have a brighter future across the state. Thanks to the support from Georgia Power Foundation, the College was able to acquire crucial technology for the Active Learning Room in the renovated/expanded section of the Clara Wood Gould Memorial Library. The purpose of this room is to provide an alternative to the traditional classroom space. Students, faculty, and staff now have access to large Ricoh Interactive Whiteboard Displays that offer the flexibility to work as separate groups engaged in active learning activities, or as a unifying system to deliver the same content across the room. The features of the learning space encourage innovative and engaging, hands-on collaboration.

Dr. Courtenay Miller, assistant professor of mathematics and director of the STEM Outreach Program, said she is grateful for Pinova’s continued sponsorship of the program. “We are thankful for Pinova’s support of STEM in the community and their recognition of the potential many students possess for future careers in STEM,” Miller said.

Assistant Vice President of Academic Student Engagement and Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. German Vargas is very thankful for the generosity of Georgia Power, and said that equipment acquired in previous years through the Georgia Power STEM Impact Program “continues to make a difference in the delivery of specialized content for our students and students in the community through STEM outreach events.”

On the Path to Revitalization Distinguished Speaker Series Generates Momentum for the Revitalization of Brunswick How to revitalize and improve Brunswick and the Golden Isles community was the main focus of the 2019 Distinguished Speaker Series. The series kicked off with guest speaker Ryan Gravel, the visionary behind the Atlanta Beltline. Gravel shared with an auditorium packed with community members how the Beltline came to be, and how one idea can have the power to transform a community—including a community like Brunswick. The second event of the series featured revitalization specialist Martin O’Hara, who worked for more than 20 years in the United Kingdom helping to restore, renovate, and reuse dilapidated facilities and revitalize port cities. O’Hara presented to hundreds of event attendees about his work in Ipswich, UK—a port city not dissimilar to Brunswick. The revitalization of Ipswich over the past 20 years bears many resemblances to what could happen in Brunswick, said O’Hara. He emphasized that compromise and collaboration between local institutions, community members, and businesses are crucial elements of a successful revitalization effort.

director of Safe Harbor’s Street Beat; Tres Hamilton, CEO of Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority; Matthew Hill, executive director of the Downtown Development Authority; Michael Kaufman, managing member of Kaufman Development Group; Josh Rogers, president and CEO of NewTown Macon; and Maggie Wilkes, owner of Maggie Mae’s restaurant. Each event was moderated by Bert Roughton, former managing editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a current member of the Foundation. Roughton helped steer the discussions by sharing questions from the audience that addressed concerns and expressed ideas for growth. The series allowed the College to foster important, relevant conversations about the future of the community.

The final event of the 2019 series was a panel discussion featuring local leaders and an expert on reviving downtown districts. Panelists zeroed in on what is currently happening in downtown Brunswick and shared their views of the city’s biggest challenges and opportunities. Participating panelists were Jeff Clark, outreach

Remembering the Road to Success Alumni Gathering Dr. Michelle Johnston was installed as the sixth present of the College of Coastal Georgia in October 2019. The occasion was marked with a week of celebrations leading up to the investiture ceremony. The Advancement team recognized that the exceptional event in the life of the College provided a great opportunity to host an alumni event in support of a new chapter in the College’s history. On October 11, the Alumni Gathering was held on the rooftop terrace of the Campus Center in Brunswick. Alumni from every generation of the College—Brunswick Junior College, Brunswick College, Coastal Georgia Community College, and the College of Coastal Georgia—enjoyed an evening of catching up with old friends, enjoying the company of other alumni, meeting the president, and learning about what’s new at the College.

President Michelle Johnston and alum Margy Jones Wagner pose for a photo together at the Alumni Gathering.

The gathering was designed to reconnect alumni with their alma mater, and cultivate a sense of community and Mariner pride among alumni.

Leaving a Legacy to Follow In Memoriam The life and legacy of Dr. Irwin Berman will continue to live on through his many philanthropic efforts and contributions to medicine. Berman enjoyed a long, successful career as a medical doctor, clinical professor of surgery, author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in surgical journals, and inventor of several diagnostic tests and medical devices still in use today. He was also an artist, avid collector of modern art, and supporter of education. In 2013, Berman established the Berman Family Partnership Endowed Scholarship in American Studies as a partnership between the American Studies program at the College of Coastal Georgia and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation in Virginia. The scholarship provides a student majoring in American Studies with a paid internship at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s plantation near Charlottesville. Scholarship recipients do an in-depth study about antebellum America, including land management, architecture, and archaeology. This opportunity allows a student to not only gain more knowledge but also have a new experience in understanding American history and its implications.
