3RD ANNUAL WALK A MILE GOES VIRAL Men walking across the College of Coastal Georgia campus in red high heels drew a lot of attention on social media. The College hosted its third annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on Oct. 11 to raise awareness for sexual violence and in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a fun, engaging community initiative and is part of the International Men’s March to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. Its trademark component is the walk that men and women take together in solidarity, with the men donning red high heels in a show of support. A video of the walk was posted by TikToker @naturallydej_ and was then shared and reposted across multiple platforms, generating thousands of comments and likes.

“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a powerful way for us to bring awareness and to rally the community on the serious effects of domestic and sexual violence. We honor those who have lost their lives and those who are survivors of domestic violence today.” - Dr. Michelle Johnston, President

The event also included a vigil where the names of 142 people who died due to domestic violence in Georgia in 2022 were read aloud. Local organizations were also in attendance to provide resources and information about services in the community.

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” - L.M. Montgomery

CELEBRATING IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER: Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate, reflect, and learn about the lives, experiences, contributions, history and legacy of Latinx and Hispanic individuals. It is celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and the College enjoyed a month full of great programming. Events included a kick-off event, Latinx Professionals Panel, special mariachi band performance, Let’s Talk Coastal “Latinx in America” discussion, a movie, dancing, and a piñata crafting party.

October was also LGBTQ+ History Month, dedicated to celebrating the legacy, history and contributions of individuals from the Lesbian, Bisexual, Gal and Trans+ community. The month of events included a kick-off, showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and costume contest, safe zone training, tie-dye activity, and a LGBTea Discussion series on various topics.

SAYING FAREWELL TO LT. DAVIS We said farewell to out of our favorite campus police officers, Lt. Johnny Davis. Officer Davis has been hired by the Glynn County School System as their new Chief of School Police and Safety Director. Davis will bring a wealth of experience, education and leadership to his new post. His law enforcement training includes internal affairs, criminal investigations, active shooter, physical fitness, defensive tactics, crime prevention, and public safety, among others. Davis was treated to a special farewell reception where he expressed his gratitude for working at the College, and promised that he won’t be too far away.

COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH SOAR TO HELP STUDENTS LEARN AND HAVE FUN Middle school and secondary education teacher candidates of the College of Coastal Georgia recently enjoyed teaching new skills and strategies to members of SOAR (Social Opportunities & Active Recreation, Inc.). Teacher candidates spent time with SOAR members at the Golden Isles YMCA for fun, learning activities. SOAR is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the physical and mental health of individuals with development disabilities. SOAR provides engaging physical and social opportunities to increase the health and wellness of its members, leading to the development of new friendships and collaborations with both

non-disabled and disabled peers. Assistant Director of SOAR Charlotte Lawson said that having the College’s education department partner with SOAR was a wonderful opportunity for members to interact with their non-disabled peers. “That’s one of our goals, to get our disabled student adults more included in the community. Being able to come to the YMCA, learn new skills, hang out and build relationships is great for them,”

Lawson said. “It’s a win-win situation, because the college students are getting experience—not just from a book, not just from a video, but it’s hands-on. They’re learning what to do with a young man in a wheelchair who wants to play. Or if you’re a PE teacher and have a student that’s nonverbal. How do you interact?”
