A New Hope. A New Year. A New Decade. The very beginning of our second decade. We hope that the holidays found you and yours in good health and high spirits. We hope that new family members serve to amaze and excite you, as much as new alumni emerge each semester and serve to engage and motivate us. And we hope that memories of those we have lost during these past ten years now serve to comfort and compel you, just as those who have joined our Chapter Eternal serve to inspire us to move forward with challenges and achievements that would make them proud. Can you believe it? It seems like only yesterday we were sponsoring our first Eta Alumni Homecoming Tailgate event. In 2020, we will hold our 11th such event. This year, we hope that you will join us for our Spring and Fall events and enjoy a reunion that only you could have made possible. While many businesses fail within five years following incorporation, your alumni association is chugging along. Perhaps with fewer members, but we hope that you, like Kevin Valdivia ‘15, John L. P. Wright ‘15, and Sebastian Lecha ‘19, will step forward and help with recruiting and renewals and make our 11th year a record-breaking triumph. We hope that you will carefully consider supporting our initiatives, as described in the following pages, and make the beginning of our second decade most memorable. We hope that you will read each and every page of this issue. The topics are many, but each and every one of them remain consistent with our Cardinal Principles: To Promote Brotherhood, Stimulate Scholarship and Develop Character. For some of you, some of the content herein will be a review; for some of you it will be new again. For all we hope that it will serve as evidence that our reason for being is to lend our Time, Talent and Treasure to the benefit of all members of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland.

I
am so pleased and excited to have been elected the Eta Chapter President of Phi Sigma Kappa. In the past, this position has been filled and executed by extremely admirable brothers, and I will work hard to make sure I follow in their footsteps of being role models and shining examples of what it means to be a brother of the Triple T’s. Being President means that I serve as “face” of the fraternity to all external organizations- which include the University, the alumni association, other IFC and PHA organizations, and anyone else. I made a promise to keep the name of this fraternity in good standing, and that I would help raise the bar for what a fraternity looks like here at the University of Maryland and at every other chapter across the country. I will perform my duties with these promises in mind, and hope to only improve this chapter during my tenure. I am looking forward to the year ahead, and I hope to help improve an organization that has already helped me improve as a man so much. This past semester has been a great one for the entire chapter. We started Samuel Greenebaum the semester by having an incredible fall rush, which resulted in 15 bright Hopeful Business Major young men who embarked on our association process. A 15-person fall Mount Laurel, New Jersey class is one of our biggest fall rush classes in the history of our chapter, Class of 2022 and is the result of a tremendous amount of work by our rush chairs. We were able to truly choose who we wanted to join our chapter, with the mindset of “quality-over-quantity” guiding our decision making on the young men to whom we wanted to extend bids. This is a great way of physically seeing how Phi Sigma Kappa is becoming one of the elite chapters on campus. We also began the semester as owners of the highest GPA and the highest new-member GPA among all fraternities at the University of Maryland. This was a great honor and one of which we were extremely proud. Being that scholarship is one of our Cardinal Principles, we looked at this achievement as a first step and hope to reach this prestigious pedestal again this semester. To say that you own the highest GPA over every other fraternity is also a great pick-up line to use: who knew that girls liked the smart guys? It was a surprise to us as well. During the semester we had a great time at the annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate. It was a great morning of food, drinks, and interaction between the active and alumni brothers. There was a strict no shot gunning rule that was certainly not broken at any point during this tailgate. The tailgate was a great way for all of us to forget that our Maryland Football team was about to get demolished by the Michigan Wolverines. But yet we were still damn proud of our boys for putting up a fight, and even more proud to join together and celebrate being a part of the greatest fraternity in the nation. We cannot wait for next years tailgate where I hope to see you there. Unlike the football team, there was one win during homecoming week. I am extremely proud to say that our chapter, paired with our matchup Alpha Delta Pi sorority, won homecoming. This is another great achievement to behold. Throughout Homecoming week, Phi Sigma Kappa and Alpha Delta Pi combined to compete in different activities such as flag football and participating in Terps Against Hunger. PSK and ADPi emerged on top, and is something to be extremely proud of moving forward. (continued on next page) January 2020

From the Desk of The President (cont.) We had six seniors go through the third degree ritual this semester. It was both a joyful and a sad day as we celebrated the legacy of these men, and realized that we will miss them once they leave and begin a new journey in their lives. Each and every senior was a prime example of what an outstanding job the Eta Chapter does at producing young men who are leaders and role models in society. Our three Cardinal Principles define these men, and will guide them for the rest of their lives. These Brothers helped shape the chapter into what it is today, and in-turn, the chapter shaped them into who they are as well. We will miss their wisdom, guidance, and presence, and wish them nothing but the best as their lives continue past College Park. With the end of the Fall semester still fresh in our minds, I speak on behalf of the entire Eta Chapter when I say we are all excited for the coming Spring semester. We anticipate another incredible rush class, a great social calendar, and so much more. The chapter is also eagerly looking forward to Giving Day which is on March 4th. Giving Day is a 24-hour fundraising event for scholarships of every kind, and we hope that this year we can reach Endowment Status. I hope you are as excited as I am for what is yet to come. The Eta Chapter is becoming one of the most respected and esteemed chapters here at College Park. I am damn proud to be a part of it, damn proud of all of your support, and damn proud to be a Phi Sig. Damn Proud,

News From Our (New) House Mother, Amanda Bennett Hi, Eta Alumni! I’m happy to introduce myself as the new Resident Director (House Mom) for Phi Sigma Kappa, #2 Fraternity Row. While in the role, I will be studying for my master’s in Public Health with a focus in Epidemiology here at the University of Maryland. I am originally from Ohio, but completed my bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from West Virginia University. (Let’s Go Mountaineers!) While searching for grad programs, Maryland was an obvious choice to continue my education because their School of Public Health is top 25 ranked in the country.

In my free time, I love to play video games and board games. I also enjoy watching sports and my favorite teams being the Orioles and Ravens – my dad was born in Baltimore, so I was raised with Maryland pro teams. I can’t wait to see what the men of Phi Sigma Kappa accomplish during my time in the house! All the Very Best in 2020,
Amanda IF YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE HEADED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND WHO WOULD MAKE A GREAT MEMBER OF THE ETA CHAPTER OF PHI SIGMA KAPPA OR IF YOUR COMPANY HAS INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES PLEASE SEND AN E-MAIL TO: alumni@psk-eta.com

Eta Phi Sigma Kappa Announces First Scholarship Winners On Monday, April 29, 2019, congratulations were sent to Brothers Jack Singlestad ‘21, Brother Gabriel Cantino ’21 and Brother Benjamin Beinish ‘21, on being the first members of the Eta Chapter to receive scholarship awards from the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund! On Giving Day 2017, 2018, and 2019 our Eta Alumni, friends and family members donated generously to the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund and, for 2019, accounted for 42% of all the monies donated to Greek-letter scholarship funds...PSK was #1 in funds raised ($20,309 raised to-date), #1 in number of donations, #1 in number of donors, and this vaulted our fund to the position of second largest Greek scholarship fund at the University of Maryland.

Below are excerpts from the award-winning essays, using the theme What Does “Fraternity for Life” Mean to Me?, submitted by our first crop of scholarship winners: Hometown: Cambridge, MD
“When I learn that someone is a brother of Phi Sigma Kappa - Eta Chapter, my opinion of them grows in confidence that we share common values, those of brotherhood, scholarship, and character. The connections among our brothers are generational through their possession and practice. The evidence of this, as exemplified by members of every class and every degree, is why the trust among our members is so strong, such that older generations wish to invest in the perpetuation of standards that they learned to love and live by. In building a brotherhood of scholars and men of character, the foundational principles guide the result.” First Place: $500.00 Award
Gabriel Cantino ‘21
Major: Ops Mgmt. & Bus. Analy., Enviro. Sci. & Policy
Hometown: Bradenton, FL
“I believe my membership in this fraternity will provide lifelong value far beyond interpersonal relationships. As hardworking and dedicated the men in this fraternity are, professional achievement and prestige are commonplace among alumni. If there’s anything I’ve learned in my job searches so far, it is that connections are incredibly valuable to attaining jobs. Now that I will be a lifelong member of Phi Sigma Kappa, I have a professional network of thousands of brothers who I can communicate with to advance my professional career.”
Benjamin Beinish ‘21
Major: Computer Science
Hometown: Montclair, NJ
“I have seen myself grow as a brother and my grades have been going up since joining the fraternity. I believe I can continue to better myself through these principles once I graduate by staying involved with Phi Sigma Kappa. Obviously I will always be friends with my brothers and nothing can come between that bond, and I plan to help out whoever is in the chapter once I leave. I want to make this chapter a better place as an alumni, because I believe that the value I gain from being a brother will benefit me long after I am paying dues, and I believe giving back to the chapter will reinforce these values.” Third Place: $150.00 Award

More From & About The Active Chapter
Hail & Farewell I can’t believe my 2 years in the house are up already. Time goes by so fast. Over the past 2 years I have seen so much growth in this group of men (whether they realize it or not) and I know you all will continue to do bigger and better things. As you all transition to a new house mom please continue to make this job the easiest on the row (if y’all give them trouble I will come down there - I am only in Baltimore). In all seriousness, if the chapter needs anything I am just a text message away. I’m going to miss you hilarious bunch and I can’t wait to hear about all of the great things you do next year! Always,
Ayana Tucker At the request of a Brother in Need, namely Chapter President Sam Greenebaum, Alumni President Joe Criscuoli ‘82 reached out to Brothers who had not yet renewed their memberships, offering to fund the costs of attending the January 17-19, 2020 Conclave using their dues donations. Criscuoli was able to send $513.95, against a total cost of $600.00, as a result of the generosity of these seven Eta Alumni: Nicholas Limar '62 John N. Rever, Capt. CEC, USN (Ret.) '65 Glenn E. McNeelege '86 Christopher P. McBeth '02 Luke Barsotti '16 Ryan M. Boyd '19 Perry Ganz '19 Upon hearing the news, Greenebaum wrote: Joe, The exec board, the entire chapter, and I are extremely grateful for these donations. With this money, we will be able to make a better, more informed leader at the top, which will trickle down to the rest of the board, and the rest of the chapter as a whole. I will represent the Eta Chapter at the conclave in the highest and most respectable manner. Please extend my sincere gratitude and thanks. Damn Proud, - Sam Greenebaum Eta Chapter President 10

Homecoming Tales Brother Bob Pemberton ‘58 writes: “I just looked at Chip Schwartz's picture of the Cinderella pumpkin carriage homecoming float and it brought back fond memories of a part of my life as a brother. The year was 1955, and Homecoming was upon us. I had the privilege of being the Float Chairman that year. With a mass of rolls of orange and green crepe paper and rolls of chicken wire, we gathered at the back the Phi Sigma Kappa house, # 7 Fraternity Row to build a pumpkin carriage. Along with the brothers was a bevy of campus beauties. Our theme for Homecoming was
Cinderella, with the carriage to be a pumpkin. We worked feverishly for a few days building the wooden frame, forming chicken wire into our beloved Terrapin and stuffing black and yellow crepe.
never lived that down at the house. Jim Starnes was the leader of the famous thief of the Naval Academy's pet goat, but that is another story.* Second, Frank Dressen was contracting a friend,
The worst job was cutting up the paper small enough to fit the wire openings. There were hundreds of yards of the stupid paper.
who had connections with the owner of some Clydesdale horses, with which we planned to pull the float. Can you see it now? It had to win first prize!

A New Role for Ahern Brother Don Ahern ‘65 writes: “Well as I approach 78 years young you would think I would be telling tales of retirement and travel. However, Lynne and I were blessed to be given the opportunity to raise our granddaughter after raising three sons. She just turned 13 and is a joy. I retired from my career as a filmmaker in 2009 but still wanted to do something. I joined with my oldest son to run a little business called Charm City Clothing (check it out at https://charmcityclothing.com/). Today I sell charm city dog collars to about 60 pet stores around the state. So if you see a dog wearing a “Natty Boh” collar, white marlin, the Maryland flag, blue crab, Utz potato chip, Birds of Baltimore or the naval academy “N” star..... think of brother Don out there hawking them. There’s no end to what a Phi Sig can do!!!”
Several side stories added to the intrigue. Jim Starnes, a sinister fabricator, had sold brother Dave Lloyd, by then a salesman for Lloyds of London, that a Maryland farmer had a seven foot high record pumpkin that we could have, if it was insured. Dave gave it a go, until Starnes saved his job by confessing to a joke. Dave
Unfortunately the Clydesdale horses fell through, so we ended up scurrying to buy a batch more of yellow and black crepe paper, wood and chicken wire with which to build a Terrapin to fit over a jeep, to pull the carriage. As I remembered, we had a (continued)

So far I have distributed about 250 copies of the paperback book (second edition), and sold 60-100 online. It is just the beginning but I am excited for how far this mission to help animals with vet humor will go! Thanks Dad!” “My Cat Ate Aliens” is available at https://tinyurl.com/NatGrifDVM
Author! Author! Brother Gerald D. “Jerry” Haser ‘68 writes: “Our daughter, Natalie Griffin, DVM. has written a humorous book on her veterinary experiences. Proceeds go to ASPCA. She shared this note below to better express the idea behind her writing the book and it’s results to date. Dad, I thought I would tell you what the book has been doing in the community so you can tell your alumni brothers: I have been selling the books at the Virginia Beach SPCA. They get 100 % of the profits because they purchased the book wholesale from me. We have been reaching out to local businesses to try to see if they will carry the book and give a portion of the proceeds back to the VBSPCA. The book is one of the best selling products at this shelter and sells well at our veterinary clinic. The previous edition of the book that was released online was designed to help raise funds for animals caught in the hurricane disaster 2017. It has sold 550 eBooks. It raised approximately $350 to donate toward transporting flood victim stray animals at that time. 16

Hi Joe & other brothers, Sorry that I have been unresponsive lately. I had a pretty serious biking accident, broke my femur bone in several places, and am now recuperating in the Sarasota Memorial Hospital. You can be sure I will renew my membership when I return home & can write a check. Thanks for doing such a great job of running the affairs of Phi Sigma Kappa. - Roland Shumate
Dear Phi Sig Brothers, How thoughtful of all of you for sending Condolences and Best Wishes for my recent Biking Accident. Your thoughtfulness has been most appreciated, and I am sure has helped in my recovery to date. The facts are that I crashed on 7/8 and fractured my right femur in 4 places. It was crushed! On 7/9 the leg was operated on and secured back in place with a metal rod through the femur, and screws to hold everything in place. I then spent 21 days in the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Acute Physical Therapy Unit, and came home on 7/30 to continue Home Hospital Therapy for another several weeks. After that I go to Out Patient Physical Therapy for as long as it takes. I am feeling Great, and making good progress on recovery, so everything is looking bright for the future. Once again, thank all of you so very much for your thoughts and prayers. - Roland Shumate Damn Proud to be a Phi Sig

Charanis '87, holds on tight to the newlywon 8th consecutive Alumni Club of the Year Award bestowed upon the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa. Brother Charanis is a Chapter Advisor (4th Degree Member) for Auburn Univ. and a “Terrific Ten’s” member of the Eta Alumni Association!
Thank You for Your Votes! Thanks to voters like you, the members of the Eta Alumni Association, the Conferences & Visitor Services department at the University of Maryland is proud to announce that, for the fourth consecutive year, they took home the “Best Of” award in the category "Best Venue for Youth Retreats & Camps". C&VS also encouraged heavy voter turnout that brought a Runner-Up award to the university in the “Best Venue for Weddings.” With the announcement of these awards, and with support from Terps like you, the Conferences & Visitor Services department has now brought ten “Best Of “Awards to the university in just five years. Your alumni president will celebrate six years with C&VS in February of 2020. October 18, 2019 Married to Meagan Bennaman, Michael Criscuoli, the youngest son of Grace Criscuoli, the First Lady of the Eta Alumni Association, and Brother Joseph E. Criscuoli ’82. Rarely has the Editor-in-Chief and First Ladyseen two people better matched for each other. A beautiful bayside service and reception was followed by a yellow school bus to a local dive for nightcaps for the intrepid. A Guide to Giving Back 2019 - 2020
A
s a new year, and a new decade, begins perhaps you find yourself in your “Golden Years and in search of a way to create, or build upon, your Phi Sig legacy. Perhaps you are recentlygraduated from the University of Maryland and looking to support your fraternity in a meaningful way and fulfill your Third Degree of Obligation. Each of us, no mater our age or financial position, realize how very much our fraternity has shaped who we are and, as well, what we have become. It is only natural then that we seek ways, some large and some small, in which to give back to Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland. And it is a testament to the truth behind this sentiment that our alumni association has, in just the last ten years, created some great ways for all of our Brothers to participate in shaping the future possibilities for the Eta Chapter.
In this special nine-page segment we present where we have been and where we are going with the efforts designed to enable you to give back to our fraternity. We hope that one, or more, of these programs will attract your attention and compel you to act. Perhaps something you will read here will spark you - as an individual, an Associate Class or a Graduating Class, or even a Decade - to make 2020 a very special year in our long and storied history. Remember, no matter the size or type of your gift to the Eta Chapter, each is appreciated and acknowledged equally. So, without further ado, please turn the page and allow us to tell you a little bit about The Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund, The Phi Sigma Kappa Six Columns Fund, The Eta Rings & Pins Program and our Eta Family Tree.

03/04/20 Could be a Big Day!
Looking Forward to Our 4th Big Day of Fundraising on March 4, 2020! In March of 2017, the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund was unveiled, designed to assist undergraduate members of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland. The fund was created by the Eta Alumni Association and the Eta Housing Corporation, in accord with the University of Maryland College Park Foundation - just like the "Six Columns Fund" - to which some of our members have already been most generous. And, like the "Six Columns Fund" the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund is monitored by the Eta Alumni Association and the Eta Housing Corporation. The Division of Student Affairs Development Staff at the University of Maryland collects and evaluates essays, written by the undergraduate members of Phi Sigma Kappa who seek to earn scholarship money from this fund. The Eta Alumni Association and the Eta Housing Corporation determines the annual/semester "theme" for the essays, and reviews and approves the evaluation of the essays done by the Division of Student Affairs Development Staff at the University of Maryland.
03.04.20 As a result of our first 3 Giving Day appeals, we have raised over $20,000. However, we need to reach $50,000 for “endowment” status - enabling distribution of scholarships to Eta Chapter undergrads without a reduction in the “endowed” amount. On our 4th Giving Day (March 4, 2020) we sincerely hope that each of our members will make a taxdeductible* contribution and help us to reach our goal. Why not join with Eta Brothers from many different decades, all of whom want to aid in the efforts to create scholarship opportunities for the members of the Eta Chapter by contributing to The Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund, and to support improvements to the Chapter House through the Six Columns Fund. You can read more about this fund, the terrific success we have encountered to-date, and both ways to “Give Back” when you visit http://alumni.psk-eta.com/giving-back/ OUR GOAL FOR 03.04.20: REACH THE $50K “ENDOWMENT” STATUS PSK Scholarship Fund Donations by Decade

An Urgent Update on the
ETA ALUMNI PINS PROGRAM A Unique and Lasting Way to Share the Symbol of Our Fraternal Bonds
A Special Invitation from
Brother Pemberton promoted the program via outreach by phone and committed to donations of a minimum of 17 pins to launch the program. Our hope was that the program would be sustainable over time so that it could become a traditional recognition element and an important part of the installation of officers ritual.
gle, the association purchased these in order to read the pin for presentation So, over the years, we have continued to present pins and our inventory is now just two pins, so we are in need of additional jeweled pins for future presentations. Perhaps you have a jeweled pin that you would like to donate to this program?
Christopher M. Flood, ’13 First Vice President Eta Alumni Association There certainly was a surprise for the elected officers of the Eta Colony and Chapter during the re-chartering event held on March 12, 2011. Several months earlier, the Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa had adopted a legacy "Eta Alumni Pins Program." The program, developed and proposed by Robert G. "Bob" Pemberton, Class of 1958, and expertly administrated by then-First Vice President Wayne H. Bethards, Class of 1959, called for jeweled Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity pins, donated by alumni of the Eta Chapter, be outfitted with jeweled “Eta” guards and presidential dangles, and be used to establish an award or awards for those Active Members in recognition of their outstanding performance as an officer of the chapter.
Robert G. Pemberton ‘58
At the re-chartering event, each newly-minted Eta Brother who had held elected office during the time when Eta was a colony was presented with a jeweled pin and guard as well as the dangle appropriate to his office. Where possible, the presentations were made by the donors themselves. In other cases, prominent Eta Alumni stood in as presenters for their absent Brothers. It was a very special and moving part of the re-chartering event. Since that time, the Eta Alumni Association has presented each newlyelected chapter president with a donated jeweled pin and guard, along with the presidential (gavel) dangle. Where the donor did not have a jeweled guard and/or presidential dan-
The program also calls for the pins that are to be awarded be accompanied by a short biographical sketch of the donor. If you would like to donate your Phi Sigma Kappa pin, our current inventory could really use your help. Please complete the donation form that follows this page and mail it with your jeweled pin to our Alumni Association. Donated pins will be inventoried, jeweled guards and presidential dangles will be purchased by the alumni association and the pins will be securely stored by the Eta Alumni Association until the time of their presentation. We look forward to your support of this special program! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 443-553-5865 or drop me an e -mail at chrisflood22@gmail.com

Donald Edward Sharpe
Eta Class of 1959
October 24, 1937 - February 11, 2019 Donald Edward Sharpe passed away in Annapolis after bravely fighting Alzheimer's disease and cancer on Sunday, February 11, 2019. Known lovingly as Poppy, he was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and 2nd dad to many. Don was born on October 24, 1937, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to Evelyn and Eldon Sharpe. He spent part of his childhood in Buffalo, New York, before moving to Maryland and had strong family connections in Michigan. Don attended the University of Maryland for both his undergraduate and law degrees. Upon graduation he earned the academic honor of the Order of the Coif. It was during his years at the University of Maryland where he met his wife Jo Ann in the musical production of Kiss Me Kate. They were married in 1960 and lived in Baltimore for many years before falling in love with the Annapolis area. Don worked in the US District Court of Maryland, the US Court of Appeals Fourth Circuit, and served as an Assistant US Attorney before joining the law firm of Piper & Marbury in Baltimore. He was proud to serve on many committees with the Bar Associations and was recognized as one of the top lawyers of America. When not working hard in a courtroom, Don cherished time with family and friends. He would spend his free hours with family and animals around the water with great food and laughter. Don was happy when holding babies, watching funny movies, cheering for his sports teams, loving his dogs and fishing. He enjoyed having big volleyball games, cookouts and hosting parties for coworkers, friends and family. The Sharpes always welcomed people into their home and provided more memories than one can imagine. Many get-togethers ended with singing, dancing, and water fights, and there were always plenty of smiles to share. Don was respected in the neighborhoods and offices where he lived and worked. Family and friends knew he was always there to lend an ear, give sound advice, a firm lecture or a caring hug when needed. Donald was preceded in death in 2018 by his fun-loving wife of 57 years Jo Ann Sharpe. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Sharpe Bialek & Robert of Baltimore; sons and daughters-in-law, William E. Sharpe & Coleen of Annapolis, and Gregory F. Sharpe & Gail of Crofton. Poppy will be missed dearly by his grandchildren, Michael Edward Sharpe, Hailey Kathleen Sharpe, Kimberly Sharpe Bialek, Kylie Rae Sharpe, and Dylan CJ Sharpe. He also leaves behind many great nieces, nephews and 'adopted' children who were influenced and cared for by this amazing man. The family received visitors at Hardesty Funeral Home at 12 Ridgely Avenue in Annapolis, on Thursday, February 21st. A private Celebration of Life for Donald was to be held at a later date. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hardestyfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County to support Jo Ann & Don's mission and love for animals in need (www.aacspca.org).

Oscar Lyder Reksten
Eta Class of 1973
September 30, 1948 - May 13, 2019
A Tribute & Proper Phi Sig Salute to Oscar by Brad Gable ’76 & Suzanne Reksten Oscar Reksten, affectionately known as Big O or O, departed from his family and friends on May 13, 2019. First and foremost, he always put his family first. He was survived by Suzanne, his loving wife of 39 years, his son Adam, daughter Meredith, and adored granddaughter Lyder Leif. He was also a consummate leader, a visionary, a teacher, a respected and successful entrepreneur, an ethical man of character and principle, an excellent athlete, and a very good friend. As the President, the Chapter Advisor, and future Hall of Famer for the 1970’s of Eta Chapter, Oscar’s presence was essential – whether it be at coed parties with the DG’s, fireworks off the roof of our house at #7 Fraternity Row, shooting pool at Town Hall, or the temporary acquisition of Farmer Brown’s Furniture Mart “Cow” trailer – it would be a memorable experience as long as O orchestrated the event. I remember one night after a formal chapter dance, O and I, with our dates, were driving home on the Beltway in his battered green “Phi Sig Mobile” when we passed a sign that said “New York City - 200 Miles”. Without a beat, Oscar looked at us in the car and said “Let’s Go!” He drove through the night and we arrived in the Big Apple at about 5 am. Raised on a farm in Lynchburg, Virginia, until moving to Long Island, New York at age eleven, O was, of course, the Student Council President and Senior Athlete of the Year in 1966 before attending the State University of New York in Farmingville. He worked at Ted Bates Advertising in New York City, affectionately remembered by his family as one of the original Mad Men! At Maryland, he received his Bachelor of Science in Business in 1973 and his Master of Business Administration in 1976. During this time, Big O rebuilt the Eta Chapter from four brothers to over forty and was responsible for re-modeling the chapter house. While pursuing his MBA, Oscar demonstrated his love of helping people by teaching as a grad student in Marketing and Business. Following college, Oscar joined his brother Howard’s shellfish business and together also built a successful restaurant and marina. That was just the beginning for O’s impact and legacy in the seafood industry. Over a working lifetime of more than forty years, Oscar founded and owned multiple full line seafood businesses along the coast from New York to Florida, buying and selling seafood worldwide. Most notable was his work with clams and oyster farming and depuration filtering, well before it was recognized and accepted as a mainstream process. More recently, I retired and moved to Florida near where Oscar and Suzanne resided for many years and he and I vowed that we would get together more often to play golf, reminisce about our brash younger days, and set out accomplishing other items on the retirement bucket list (with our brides of course). However, Oscar loved to work and provide for his family in every way imaginable and consequently, to my loss, time got away from us and now I am saddened that it will not happen. We all loved Oscar, a man filled with love and devotion for his family, an honorable man of his word and principled values, he had compassion for all people. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten...

Marc David Street
Eta Class of 1983
June 25, 1960 - May 20, 2019
A Tribute to Marc David Street by Mike McGown, H ‘83 Marc Street passed on from this world on the 20th of May at around 1:30 a.m. Marc leaves behind a loving wife, Vera, a 9-year old son, Marcus, a brother, mother, father and many family/friends. Marc had a long battle with cancer, starting as throat cancer and later turning to his lungs. Marc was a lifetime friend for me. We go back to high school together. My Mom would always call him her third son. We were roommates at Phi Sig for 3 years. We spent many subsequent years as close friends exchanging funny stories and support for each other. I miss him already. Several times have come up in the last few weeks that I almost called him for his advice. For the future, if I want to reach out to him, I should try his son. Marcus is a duplicate of Marc in every way. Starting with the way that he answers a question with a question, to his amazing ability to distill multiple complicated thoughts to something simple, to his love for golf…. Marc’s son Marcus and he are the same - they look the same too. Marc’s post College Park years were spent in the finance world in a variety of locations. This eventually culminated with a PhD in business administration and a career as a college professor. Together with his wife Vera (a PhD and a professor also), they helped educate the youth at Salisbury University where they raised Marcus. Marc and I always lived far apart but stayed close. We would be out locally near Salisbury and run into his students often. Several of them cornered me to tell me just how good of a professor he was. Once he had passed on, I looked up this information online and discovered that this was understated if anything. Marc had an amazing passion for teaching. For those that knew him closely, that same passion, his abilities for persuasion and his way for getting things done all were rooted in his competitive spirit. We all remember it at the fraternity house playing basketball, his downtown DC hot dog eating contests, etc… Marc wasn’t known for doing things half way! Marc’s memory, quick wit and his dry sense of humor were his signatures. On many nights back in college, we would stay up late in argument/debate. He would use his wit and humor and very logical demeanor to state his position and sway you to follow. Those qualities served him well as a professor. Marc could make you laugh. Marc’s advice has always been valuable to me. Additionally, this was probably more valuable to my kids through their personal choices, college selection and career path choices. I hope that I can do the same for Marc’s son. It’s not really how he died that I will remember. That will fade. I’ll only remember how he lived. I am sure that many feel the same. I always loved him like my brother. It was appropriate that we were fraternity brothers together too. My mother was right, I guess. I miss you brother, rest in peace! 38

Ian David Hiltner
Eta Class of 1990
May 2, 1966 - October 1, 2019
A Letter from Kim Hiltner to Ian Hiltner’s Phi Sigma Kappa Brothers: There never seems to be enough time with the ones we love. These words are so excruciatingly true for me now that my beloved husband, Ian Hiltner, has passed away. There are so many times each day that I want to tell Ian something about the kids, ask for his help, laugh with him, hug and kiss him and fall asleep next to each other. No time goes by without his presence being missed. There is one thing that could always be said about Ian. He had a big presence. It started from the time he went off to college and made himself known on the rugby fields of Lyndon State and University of Maryland. On the rugby pitch Ian was known as a tough, strong guy with a devilish sense of humor. Ian especially loved having a good time with his rugby brothers at Phi Sigma Kappa. At Phi Sig, Ian met so many lifelong friends and shared so many good times, riding around in his dad’s van, going to parties and experiencing all the joy of college life. The stories and the “situations” Ian and the Phi Sigs got into never fail to bring a laugh and possibly a shake of the head. I hope that the brothers will continue to keep those stories coming and to share them with our children so that they can continue to know Ian and think of him with laughter and happiness. When we left College Park and embarked on our life together as man and wife, I never could have imagined all the amazing memories and friendships that we had along the way. I will never forget the look in Ian’s eyes as he held each of our three beautiful children for the first time. Andy, Ryan and Brooke are so very lucky to have had him as their dad. They miss Ian so very much, and they hurt deeply, but they are hanging in there buoyed by their memories and the unbelievable amount of love and support that has been showered on us by our friends, family and Ian’s brothers at Phi Sig. It is clear that Ian meant so very much to so many, that Ian’s life mattered and that he will not be forgotten. I know Ian will be remembered whenever we think of his Willy’s Jeep, whenever we need a movie quote, a baseball stat or to remember the name of some obscure 80’s band or when there will be conversations about Maryland football or basketball. Of course, those conversations about Maryland sports are not always exactly filled with positivity...but it sure makes it fun. I am eternally grateful for all the support we received from so many Phi Sigs, but I would like to give a special thank you to his brothers George Peabody, Jeff Oliu, and Dave Schwartz for all of the visits and support for Ian even in his last moments of life. Thank you to all the brothers at Phi Sigma Kappa for demonstrating what fraternity and brotherhood should be. Ian was honored to call you all friends. Love Always, Kimberly, Andy, Ryan & Brooke Hiltner
