OUR PROUD SPONSORS

OUR COMMITTEE "JCUDSA Inc. is a non-profit student run organisation that supports and represents the interests of JCU dentistry students. We strive to forge a student culture that is enriched by co-curricular as well as extra-curricular events and initiatives."

FROM THE EDITOR Ahoy, welcome to Dentistry at James Cook University (JCU) in Cairns! This booklet aims to provide you with helpful information about Cairns, what events to look forward to in 2021, and a survival guide for your orientation here at JCU. Included in the booklet is a map of the campus. As dental students, we use many parts of the Cairn’s campus to attend practicals, tutorials and lectures (when they are not online). Should you need any assistance or more information, remember you can always ask your mentor (who are assigned to you on the first day of O-week), your home group co-ordinators (whom you will get to know in your first week of study), your first-year experience coordinator, the dentistry administration team or your fellow dental students (we are always happy to help!). Make sure to keep in touch as they are here to help should you need academic, moral or social assistance. Enjoy your first year of study at JCU and make the most of beautiful Cairns!

Dustin Drever JCUDSA inc. Publications and Media Officer

FROM THE PRESIDENT Congratulations on making it into JCU Dentistry and stay tuned for an unforgettable year! Before you head off to knuckle-down and study hard, it’s important to establish and maintain a healthy work-life balance. That’s where we, the JCU Dental Student Association (JCUDSA), come into the picture. Since 2009, our student-led organization has aimed to develop a strong sense of culture within the diverse community by enriching the student experience. We are hoping that 2021 will be a glorious return to form for JCUDSA and its much-anticipated annual events. 2020 was a year of many firsts with events having to be scrapped for reasons known to you all. We are working to ensure that opportunities for social events, academic activities, giving back to the community, and sporting competitions will be plentiful, with an even greater focus on forming and maintaining inter-relationships between year levels as well as other clubs and health degrees. The inter-year sports carnival and the annual Dentistry Ball are definitely something to look forward to! Importantly, we recommend that you sign up for a JCUDSA Gold Membership to take advantage of the discount on exclusive events and merchandise – we’re the cheapest dental school to join and it’s totally worth it! We are also on the lookout for enthusiastic people to join our team so keep an eye out for opportunities to come if you would like to get involved! Finally, we hope this booklet will help to kick-start your journey and enjoy the next few years at JCU. We’re all so excited to welcome you to our family! Don’t be shy and come join us at the Dentistry O-week festivities xoxo! Rishil Raniga JCUDSA Inc. President

ADSA EVENTS "The Australian Dental Students’ Association (ADSA) is the only national body to represent all dental, oral health therapy and hygiene students in Australia. ADSA aims to foster communication between the various schools, support its members throughout their course and keep all dental students informed of issues affecting their student life and the dental profession."

LIFE IN THE TROPICS Whether you’re travelling from interstate or internationally, you know you have reached Cairns once the humid weather drains your body’s sebaceous glands from every bit of content it holds. But seriously guys, don't forget to stock up on insect repellent as you'll become a magnet for mosquitoes in no time! However, it is without a doubt that your time here will be filled with new experiences and friends along the way! This region is also well-known for many things including rainforests, mountain bike events, scuba diving and snorkelling around the Great Barrier Reef.

CRUISING AROUND CAMPUS Whether you are feeling homesick or stressed from the dentistry workload, you can always depend on JCU services for student support. Academic advice can be given through the Student Mentor Program and Learning Advisors in the library. Further, on-site professionally trained psychologists are available with drop-in sessions daily. There are also many student societies and clubs to join, from our very own JCU Dental Student Association to the Rural Health in the Northern Outback (RHINO). For the fitness fanatics, there is a gym on campus and membership can be purchased at the JCU Student Association office. We’ve also got sporting teams, Zumba and Pilates sessions (visit the JCU website to learn more). Our campus also features an impressive three-story library, several 24hr computer labs, a café and licensed bar, and a sporting oval and basketball court.

LIVING IN STUDENT ACCOMMODATION Life at the Cairns Student Lodge is unlike any other University accommodation! There is definitely a strong sense of belonging and, best of all, meals and utilities are completely catered for. It is also a stone’s throw to JCU and the Campus Shopping Village. Furthermore, the Lodge Event Hub organises trips, events, and career and life skills workshops too. To ensure all students feel safe and secure, there is a friendly and dedicated team of Residential Leaders (RLs)! The team comprises of mostly second and third year dental students who can help you feel more at home and provide pastoral care. Overall, the lodge is a brilliant place to meet new people. The John Grey Hall is located on campus at JCU Cairns, making living here a stone's throw to class. Recently opened, the seven-storey octagonal building offers a courtyard featuring shared BBQ facilities and is the perfect place to relax and hang out with friends. The facility is fully managed by an Onsite Manager and administrative support team, with Residential Assistants providing pastoral care to students. Other than the Cairns Student Lodge and the John Grey Hall there are further accommodation options available. The Beaches Luxury apartments are located directly across from JCU and the John Grey Hall. Many students also live in share houses in surrounding suburbs.

SMITHFIELD SHOPPING CENTRE Located approximately 2km from JCU campus, the Smithfield Shopping Centre is just a short ride away for all your food, clothing and lifestyle needs. Here you can find major supermarkets such as Woolworths, Coles and Kmart as well as all major banks, pharmacies, a post office and the 1 Million Strong gym. There is also an Event Cinemas and if you show your JCU student ID card on Mondays you can snag yourself a nice discount on movie tickets! Recently, the shopping complex underwent major renovations and this brought with it the arrival of many new restaurants and dining options including Burger Urge, Sushi Train, Burrito Bar, Lone Star Steakhouse, Falafellicious, Subway, Boost Juice and Pho Pho Vietnamese Street Food.

Offering a large selection of cocktails, speciality spirits and craft beers, it is a goto for those after an exceptional beverage in an intimate setting.

THE CAIRNS ESPLANADE Located just 20 minutes driving distance from the JCU campus, the Esplanade is one of Cairns' best known landmarks. As a hub for local and international visitors, it's the perfect place to go to if you're looking for a beautiful view, an early morning jog or even a nice dinner along the water. Here, you will also find the Cairns Esplanade Swimming Lagoon which is a perfect place to spend time soaking up the sun whilst enjoying a dip in the water and viewing the beautiful Trinity Inlet and mountains that line the horizon. Additionally, many restaurants and coffee shops are only a small walk away and there are communal BBQ areas surrounding park grounds under the luscious, leafy trees. Similarly, there are many forms of all exercise equipment dotted throughout the parks and esplanade boardwalk. If you venture out for a short, relaxing stroll north along the beachfront boardwalk you will find yourself passing by Muddy’s playground and a highly populated Skatepark. In addition there are also beach volleyball and basketball courts where a game of pick-up can be found when busy!

Kuranda: If you’re keen for a little escape away from the hustle and bustle of Cairns, a trip to Kuranda is the way to go! It is a great place to explore as it is surrounded by a World Heritage Listed Rainforest and has a village of its own (Kuranda Village) which houses markets, cafes and bars as well as accommodation and camping. Nature sights that can be seen on this trip include Barron Fall, many wildlife zoos (venomous animals, bats, birds, butterflies, etc.), and the Wildlife Safari Reserve and a Koala Garden. Fur, the Kuranda Skyrail and Scenic Railway are offered and are great ways to experience the beauty of the tropical rainforest. Cairns Night Markets: Offering a wide array of tourist and souvenir shopping, the night markets are a great place to go for desserts, cheap massages and much more! Waterfalls: For those of you who like swimming or just dipping your feet in the water and appreciating the scenery around you, be sure to visit the many waterfalls of Cairns! They are great places to go with a group of friends to socialize and enjoy some sausage sizzles! Some include Crystal Cascades, Behana Gorge, Millaa Millaa, Emerald Creek, Josephine Falls. Green Island and Fitzroy Island These two islands, are amongst the most popular attractions in Cairns, providing you with a taste of the Great Barrier Reef. TRANSPORT METHODS Walking If you live at either the Beaches Luxury Apartments, the Cairns Student Lodge or the JCU on-campus student accommodation, then walking is more than a viable option (might just be a little hot during the summer days)! The Beaches Luxury Apartments is about a 5-7 minute walk from campus, while the Cairns Student Lodge is about 10 minutes walking distance. Keep in mind that we do live in the tropics so you'll have to bare the humidity and unpredictable downpour of rain. Make sure to have an umbrella on you at all times, especially during wet season!

Bus (public transit) Sunbus offers various buses with routes leading to the northern beaches, Cairns central, and Cairns city to name the least. Pro tip: present your student ID card with your student concession s at the time of ticket purchasing. Popular buses: 110 – Taking this bus from the JCU bus stop will lead you to Smithfield shopping centre, Cairns Central, Cairns city (your stop to get to the clubs), Cairns City, Cairns Central, and. If you take this bus the opposite way up north it will lead you to some of the northern beaches such as Trinity Beach, Palm Cove, and Clifton beach. 111 – similar to 110 UBER Quite self-explanatory, really! Driving While purchasing a car is not entirely necessary in Cairns, it does make things easier as many places in Cairns such as the super markets, fitness classes, shopping centres, restaurants and beaches are not within walking distance. Alternatively, public transportation, taking a taxi, or ordering an uber (more friendly to the student budget compared to taking a taxi) are also reasonable options.

WHY WALK WHEN YOU CAN RUN? Even though Cairns is hot (really hot), it is home to some of the most beautiful running/walking tracks in Australia. Listed below are some of the most iconic running tracks to tackle in your study breaks!

MOST ICONIC RUNNING TRACKS IN CAIRNS - Clifton Beach (Deadman's Gully) to Palm Cove - Park Run (Cairns Esplanade) - The Red and Blue Arrow Circuits (Cairns Botanical Gardens) - Earl Hill (Trinity Beach) - Glacier Rock (Karunda)

WANT COMPANY? Come along the JCU Nicci P running club sessions! It's a great social activity and an easy way to keep active (...easy-ish). Session times (subject to change): -

Monday 5pm (JCU Oval) Tuesday 5pm (Barlow Park Athletics Track) Wednesday 5pm (Deadman's Gully) Saturday: Cairns Park Run

Don't be intimidated by the heat! The Nicci P run club is one of JCU's longest-running student clubs and one of it's best (...we think so). The club is open to ALL skill and speed levels. To keep up to date with session times and events, like the notorious BEER MILE, join the The JCU Nicci P Run Club on Facebook or Scan the QR code on the right:

WHO IS THIS LADY? I’m Julia, I graduated with a dental degree from the University of Adelaide in 2011 and I came to Queensland chasing the sun! Initially I lived and worked in Townsville and now I am in Brisbane. I work at a private practice day-to-day but for the last few years I have also worked as a locum from the Royal Flying Doctor Service QLD. The dental division of the RFDS is run by an amazing team of dentists and assistants, who travel in a dental truck all over the Queensland outback providing free quality dental care to rural Queenslanders.

WHAT IS THE LOVING TOOTH CO? As we all know, dentistry is an art as well as a science. This means that dentists tend to be quite creative people! And judging by the number of ‘tooth’ and ‘smile’ number plates I see on the road, we are a bunch of people who are very proud to be who we are! I started Loving Tooth Co as a creative project that celebrates our profession, with the profits of my venture going towards supporting the incredible RFDS team. Having worked directly with the RFDS, I know that any funds we can raise make a huge difference to the health and lives of many people.

WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS INFORMATION? Loving Tooth Co stocks cute earrings, necklaces and cool pins to wear on your dental coat. If you would like a tooth-inspired piece of your own and to support this wonderful initiative you can visit www.lovingtooth.co I know being a student isn’t easy ( I remember living off Mie Goreng noodles for days!) so I have created a discount code to make it a little easier for you to be involved. Simply use the code JCUDSA at check-out and get 10% off! You can also find Loving Tooth Co on Facebook or Instagram and follow the journey. Your love and support are so very appreciated!
