Hello all, I am the the James Cook University Dentistry Student Association (JCUDSA) media officer and I am excited to bring you the Word of Moth (WoM) publication for 2022!

It has been my pleasure to curate just a snapshot of all the amazing events our team at JCUDSA has put together over the year. From the O’week events where everyone had a chance to mingle and meet our newest cohort to the college of dentistry, to our classic annual events, such as Dentistry Ball. Without our committed team, these events simply would not be possible, so I’d like to extend a massive thank you to all that contributed to these wonderful social events and to all those in attendance.

Putting down the books and picking up the balls (or frisbee’s in the case of this years MIPS cup), we were lucky enough to have some excellent sports days with exceptional weather, as always!

As always, the association itself would not be possible if not for the staff, students and alumni of the JCU college of dentistry. These individuals play a pivotal role in shaping our learning experiences and contribute significantly to the dental profession at large, both within the

This magazine is made possible by the the generous contributions from the committed JCU dentistry students, staff and of course our sponsors. Without the large body of work that the committee puts in throughout the year this association would not be possible, nor would the events pictured in this years publication. Thank you for taking taking the time to read WOM 2021, we appreciated the support for our student association and the JCU college of dentistry. On behalf of the JCU

Additionally, we had some amazing academic events thanks to our guest speakers and beloved alumni’s. Not only this, but we were fortunate enough to have multiple representatives from our favourite loupes companies visit the campus.

Without the support from our sponsors, JCU College of Dentistry and our alumni, the publication of this magazine would not be possible, nor would the many events featured in this years addition. We would like to thank all of those who support JCUDSA, and the many social, sport and academic events. Furthermore, I would like to thank YOU, the reader, for taking the time to read this years edition and by doing so, supporting JCUDSA and the JCU college of dentistry.

PRESIDENTS' ADDRESS

Another successful year, despite the minor setbacks with COVID affecting events and the

It began with a significantly newly planned O-week program, getting to know the first years and offering many opportunities to find some familiar faces. The big Friday night event we changed it up a bit this year with the introduction of 'Fresh Meet' at Salthouse. It allowed everyone to have a drink and relax after a big week.

It was then once we had settled into the semester we announced the introduction of our new position, Pride Officer. A great way to offer opportunities for a wider welcoming community and someone with the expertise to offer a safe environment that identifies as LGBTQIA+. Congratulations to Kelley Dickinson for her invaluable contribution to her

Throughout the year we aimed to have as many events as possible for all. We had another successful inter-year, inter-faculty sports carnival and MIPS CUP that were both played on Cairns Campus with indoor sports completed in the newly built Newman College. Beyond this Wellbeing was greatly successful, organizing some charity bake sales events and a load of great giveaways during the exam blocks.

Socially the Annual Dentistry Ball was a huge success, held at the Pullman International Grand Ballroom. We were grateful to be welcomed back for another great event thanks to Lize and her Social team. The turnout was fantastic and everyone had a great time!

A great thank you goes to allow our sponsors for their undoubtedly amazing support and without them, it could not be possible to create the amazing memories and experiences we have. Thank you to all for an amazing year and good luck in the future!

DENTAL HEALTH WEEK

Dental Health Week 2022 (DHW) this year was a blast! During August 1 – 7, we reformed it this year with joint assistance of academic staff most remarkably, Ms Silcock (Oral Hygienist).

The Australian Dental Association outlined the key theme focusing on the importance of taking the keep steps to look after our teeth (“Love your teeth”). Our hope was to enhance community engagement this year by supporting as many different communities as possible in different settings that would enhance the critical importance to “Love your teeth”. Beginning off the week with the premiere of our student led music video that identifies the key steps in caring for your teeth.

Each morning and lunchtime of DHW outside the JCU Dental Clinic we set up a stall that played our fantastic music video while we handed out information pamphlets and dental products.Thisbenefitedeachandeverypatientthatenteredin the clinic whether it was a free toothbrush, tube of toothpaste orjustasimplechat.

Finally following the Sunday of DHW we set up a stall at the local Palm Cove markets, this was a great initiative that opened up the discussions in oral health and emphasizing the theme to “Love your Teeth”. Thank you to all that assisted in making the week so successful, it is a great opportunity to share our passion for our profession with the local community.

EPIC ACADEMICS AMIDST A PANDEMIC

With the COVID-19 pandemic dissipating, we have been fortunate to see many of our academic events return this year. With all the built-up anticipation, we did our best to make them better than ever.

We hosted our very first Loupes Evening Tradeshow which was a huge success. We traded sparse lunchtime loupes visits for an all-in-one experience. Brands including Admetec, Orascoptic, Lumadent, Pentax, Peri-Optix, Q-Optics, Bryant and Surgitel were all available for students to compare. We paired this with our first-ever online information evenings leading up to the event to prepare students for their valuable face-to-face time.

We had the privilege of hosting several guest speakers throughout the year, both in-person and as streamed webinars, in a lecture hall for students to enjoy together. Dental Protection’s Senior Dentolegal Consultant, Dr Mike Rutherford, enlightened us with very interesting case examples where he discussed the evolution of adverse outcomes. Later in the year, Dr Rutherford attended our campus talking about key areas of vulnerability and what to do when things don’t go as planned. We hosted our annual MIPS Lunch and Learn on well-being by Dr Geoff Toogood, who started the #CrazySocks4Docs campaign, perfectly timed for our exam preparations. In addition, Dr Shiv Pillay gave students an appreciation for the evolution of digital dentistry. We concluded the year with interactive discussion and advice from our previous graduates at our Alumni Evening Talk.

Balancing other aspects of this role, my studies, and my work-life balance would not have been possible without the teamwork from everyone in JCUDSA. Also, a special shout out to those students who set up my dental chair every time an academic committee meeting ran late! It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve as your JCUDSA Academic President in 2022.

Time to put the books down and forget about multiple choice, short answer or OSCE's, it's time for the real test of knowledge with our annual trivia event! Questions ranging from popular culture, current trends news, and most importantly... dentistry cohort facts. We once again thank our proud platinum sponsors, Townsville Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for making this special night possible!

TO YEAR FOUR

Year 4 has been all about getting us ready to head out to our final year placements across Australia. We started the year with an intensive clinical refresher where we refined our skills in suturing, emergency training, radiography, and simulation clinic.

A typical week in the semester was made up of mornings seeing patients and afternoons of theoretical and practical learning. Compared to Year 3, we have been able to improve our time management with shorter appointments and take on more complex cases including endodontics, exodontia, and fixed prosthodontics.

We celebrated our last Dental Ball together as 4th-year students since we will be away on placement next year. We enjoyed wrapping up the year’s events with JCU’s Clinical Day, where our year-long research efforts were presented, and some incredible guest speakers shared their secrets. As Dr Annalene Weston said, make sure you take a moment for your “third space” daily to avoid burnout.

While bitter-sweet, we enjoyed our last year on campus and look forward to learning even more during our final-year placements in 2023.

AYEARTOSOCIAL Lize

2022 was a year jam-packed with social opportunities and celebrations. Early in the year we welcomed the new cohort of 1st year BDS students with O-Week, which gave them plenty of opportunities to meet their new peers.

The week was a huge success with a fantastic turn out from all year levels. The fun included the annual Inter-year mixer, Valentine’s games night, Trinity Beach BBQ and more! This year’s O-Week also saw the introduction of ‘Fresh Meet,’ a brand-new casual cocktail event held at Salt House.

The annual JCUDSA Dentistry Ball was the biggest event of the year. The almost 300-person function took place in the stunning Grand Ballroom of the Cairns Pullman International. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t one of the more stressful events I’ve organised, but it was truly such a rewarding experience watching months of work come together as such a successful night. It was amazing to see everyone have a much-deserved night of fun.

I am very honoured to have been a part of such an amazing year for JCU Dentistry. I’ve seen how our social events allowed friendships and connections to form and strengthen throughout the year. This year could not have been what it was without my fantastic social representatives, so I’d like to extend my appreciation to Yong Un Kim, Stephanie Donaldson, Cody Tomkins and Andy Nguyen. The rest of the JCUDSA executive team also need to be acknowledged for their constant support throughout the year

The 2022 social representatives did an amazing job uniting both their individual cohorts and other year levels to create the supporting community that is JCU Dentistry. I hope that everyone had a spectacular year and built lasting friendships that will grow stronger throughout the course. Have a wonderful Christmas holiday and rest up for another crazy year!

STEPH HOPE

3RD YEAR SOCIAL REPRESENTATIVE

there!

The Halfway Milestone! With big milestones came some even bigger celebrations for the third year cohort this year. We started the year seeing our own patients in the JCU clinic and facing plenty of exciting challenges that was always made easier surrounded by your best mates and a happy hour or two.

As a cohort we spent time bonding at local trivia nights, dancing the night away with our double denim throwbacks and ofcourse the number of perio chart referrals. Our cohort really loves perio charts! Almost as much as we love 114’s and sarcasm.

The night of all nights and the most anticipated event of the year was ofcourse our Halfway Ball which was held at the lovely Benson Hotel. It’s a night to celebrate the halfway mark of our dentistry degree, an incredible feat for us all. We swapped our blue scrubs for dresses and heels, enjoyed copious amounts of arancini balls and sipped away to our personalised cocktail of the night famously named ‘The Pulijet’. The success and fun energy of the night was captured on every one of our pearly Colgate smiles.

We created some beautiful memories this year both in the clinic and out and about at our favourite local spots. It was wonderful to be a small part of facilitating some of the most stand out celebrations of our dentistry experience. I hope everyone is as proud as I am for achieving such a great milestone and look forward to what’s ahead in our final clinical year in Cairns! Next stop….. GRADUATION!

Clinical FOUNDATIONS

2022 what a year!

To say it has flown by is an understatement. We started our first week of clinical foundations with shakey hands and unknown CPITN codes. Fast-forward to the last week of clinic and we are completing extractions and numerous restorations. The transformation personally and professionally between the cohort has been phenomenal.

This year has sparked lights in us all, igniting the paths for our bright future of treating patients. On behalf of the 2024 cohort, we have big thankyous to give to the JCU Dentistry Staff for their patience, knowledge and understanding. The support from both academic and clinical departments have been integral to our success. Our appreciation for their dedication is unmeasurable

on!

What a cracker year of sports 2022 has been! Starting off with the annual Assassins game, a fresh video got plenty of people excited to mix and murder in the courtyards of dentistry. Some weren't afraid to cart around watermelons but eventually only one remained after a tense showdown in D1.

Next up was the inter-year sports carnival. A couple of pushbacks didn't ruin the fun, with a huge turnout excited to check out the brand new Newman Catholic College air-conditioned courts! A busy day of soccer, snags, smiles and sports ensued. The second years ended up taking out the title after a dominant run in the tug of war.

We then laced up our shoes for the Cairns marathon festival, running though the city on a classic sunny (but somehow rainy) day. A few of us even put our bodies in the hurt locker, running the full 42 km.

JCUMSA then paid a visit to the annual MIPS CUP. They didn't muck around though, bringing their finest athletes they caught us off gaurd and took out the victory. It was a great turnout for both faculties, with the addition of Zooper Doopers and ultimate frisbee a great time was had by all. We ended the night on even ground by partying it out in Gilligans (no surprises there). Thanks to all those who came together and made this year of sports the great year it was, I can't wait to see what 2023 has to offer!

RISHIL RANIGA | 5TH YEAR SOCIAL REPRESENTATIVE

Our final years had the opportunity to mingle and reminisce one last time before their Graduation Ceremony at the JCU Graduation Cocktail Party. The location at the Backyard was picturesque and thanks to our many sponsors, there were yearbooks, free goodies, and a chance to win a day of free CPD on the cards. Access to a bar tab and lots of delicious food ensured that the night was enjoyable for all. We wish the Graduating Class of 2022 all the best as look to begin their careers as fully-fledged Dentists!
