The ear after COVID 19! Rishil and Joe here, e ha e had the great pleas re to ha e been JCUDSA s respecti e President and Vice- President for this ear. As the orld as placed on a stand-still after COVID-19, e ere desperate to make p for some lost time in 2021. With great e pectations, the e ec ti e committee ere dri en and determined to kick-start the ear ith a bang for both ne and ret rning st dents. O- eek as a roaring s ccess thanks to o r social president Jennifer and the respecti e social members. We elcomed the first ears ith JCUDSA s O- eek traditions s ch as icebreaker at Cairns St dent Lodge, Ama ing Race, as ell as a ne friend-dating alentine s da themed st pid c pid tri ia night. This ear e ere fort nate to be more in ol ed ith ne Pharmac st dents on the Cairns camp s ho ere also in ited to join o r O- eek soirees. The eek ro nded off ith JCUDSA s infamo s part b s that ended ith man memories and ne facebook friend req ests. Unfort natel implemented dentists. Ho presentations Yohan Choi

As the months past and the feeling of norm as ret rning, Cairns as str ck ith a s dden 3-da lockdo n that called off JCUDSA s Dentistr Ball. Ne and old traditions contin ed once the lockdo n terminated incl ding Inter- ear Sports Carni al held at Smithfield High School, TVOMS Tri ia Night and MIPS c p held in To ns ille ith medical st dents. To compo nd this, the charit and ellbeing team ere er acti e thro gho t the ear and generated significant contrib tions to local charitable organisations, incl ding R U OK da celebrations and the JCUSDA ADSA filling the gap bake sale. The third ears contin ed the tradition of the Half a Ball ith o r resident third ear social representati e, Li e, ho organised and deli ered a er special night to remember. We ca ght p ith a fe , of the man , great h mans that make p the JCU College of Dentistr , to ask them some of the e er da challenges the face in the degree, and ho the tackle them...

I think the most challenging thing so far in this degree isn t the subjects e re doing but rather ho much content the pro ide in a short amount of time. This used to be stressful for me at the start as I tried to catch up. When the stress got too difficult, I d usuall go for a run or I ll make up e ents like gang-up tag. During these times it s eas to lose moti ation. Ho e er, I d regain that moti ation b thinking about m future and here I ll be as ell as inning the gang-up tag . And that ill be done through smart and hard ork. During m free time, I usuall pla harmonious melodies on the guitar or rite songs that reflect m current state of mind. Stud ing this course isn t actuall that bad because ou meet so man like-minded people.

'The amount of content e ha e to learn has definitel been a challenge. M coping mechanism is being organised b making sure lectures, notes, flashcards and an readings are done b the end of the eek so I ha e the eekend to re ise. Another challenge is mental health. I m a big belie er that e ercising, getting a good nights sleep and eating good food can do onders. Funn as it sounds, orking casuall keeps me moti ated to stud . I like to plan m eeks and kno ing I e got X number of hours to stud makes sure I use those hours efficientl . Working as a dental assistant helps me to sta moti ated because I kno I ill be the operator one da . Also, stud ing ith m friends keeps me moti ated because ou can bounce learning strategies and questions from each other. Plus, e all secretl ant to be the Kahoot champion! I tr to plan m free time to rela on Saturda s. Rust markets, baking, putting the crab pots in at Port Douglas and, if the eather is good, taking the boat out to the reef. I ouldn t call run club rela ing but I tr to join in hen I can.'

''Mo ing a a from home, famil and friends as definitel hard, but ha ing a great net ork of close friends ou can al a s rel on up here and regular face-timing back home makes it easier. Juggling an e hausting clinic session ith stud ing is a task, but sta ing on top of content and planning out stud sessions, hile also inding do n before making a cup of coffee and getting into a stud session helps. To keep moti ated I use 'stud ith me' ideos keeping me accountable hen I feel like slacking cause it s like ha ing someone else there. I also focus on the aspects of dentistr I most enjo and think of stud ing as a a to get better at them. When I do take time out from stud ing, I lo e keeping up ith sports; AFL, soccer, NFL and al a s making time to atch Port Adelaide pla . I also enjo pla ing Nintendo S itch or Pla Station, a good round of Mario Kart fi es e er thing! Online shopping is al a s good too, hether in m free time or during a cheek stud break .'

'The biggest challenge I ha e faced in this degree o ld be mo ing a a from m famil in first ear. Creating a social net ork and home a a from home has helped to get me thro gh to fo rth ear. Making friends thro gh Uni ersit acti ities, ork commitments and sporting e ents has enabled me to spread m ings in the Cairns comm nit and allo ed me to become s per comfortable ith being 16 ho rs north of m entire famil . From a o ng age, I ha e al a s anted to be a dentist and therefore m moti ation to st d is largel sp rred on b the p re interest I ha e in m degree. On to gh da s I emplo a fe tips to keep me going: - Pomodoro Techniq e - Forest St d App - Acti e Recall Strategies - St d ing ith friends. In m spare time, I am s all cooking, hanging o t ith m close friends, or shopping. E er eek I tr to do something I ha en t done before incl ding isiting a ne caf , s imming in a ne aterfall or doing a different alk/hike on the eekend. Rela ing is h gel important hile doing this degree and finding a gro p of mates to chill o t ith or grab 5 plates of s shi ith on short notice can make an enormo s positi e impact.' 'Challenges faced in degree? First and second ear as difficult because there as so much stud to do ithout putting much of it into practice. I ha e found it much easier to stud after starting clinic in third ear. I m er much a practical learner so being able to appl hat I ha e learnt through seeing patients made things much easier to understand. It also ga e me more moti ation to kno it all in the first place. Ho do ou sta moti ated to stud ? I don t o erdo it. There s no point starting super earl or stud ing for hours and hours e er da if ou burn out. Qualit is more important than quantit ! I d rather stud for less time but retain and kno e er thing that I ent o er. I also take plent of breaks, eat health meals and e ercise e er da . M mental health hile I m stud ing is so much more important than getting a HD. What do ou like to do in our spare time to rela ? I call m famil and friends at home in Adelaide. Also, plent of online shopping and Netfli .' HELB A M ONG 5TH YEAR DENTISTRY

'Biggest challenge in teaching Dentistr students ould be originall ha ing to learn all the anatom and ph siolog m self and no remembering e er one s name, oh and tr ing to get e er one to pa attention to safet Ho do I sta moti ated to stud ? I don t I tr but I struggle and ha e good da s and bad da s. When I am ha ing a bad time I ha e a couple of quotes / song l rics hich I use for moti ation- all around not gi ing up and pro ing people rong To rela - I come to ork. I lo e m job. If I m not allo ed to come to ork I hang out ith m dogs If I had to gi e one piece of ad ice to dentistr students regarding e ams it ould be to Read the question carefull !'

'The challenge in teaching Dentistr students is coming up ith different strategies to help ith impro ing their fine motor skills and manual de terit . I ha e ne er been a particularl good student at uni though I belie e the skills & kno ledge I gained made me a life-long learner. Looking back, I as the epitome of procrastinators and it s something I d suggest not emulating. Self-discipline and self-moti ation comes from our goals dri en b our ision. You reall need to find our WHY. I lo e atching mo ies, listening to music, reading self-help books, pla ing online multipla er games like O er atch and COD on Pla Station hene er I ha e free time to rela ! D KE I A G JC DE AL AFF

DENTISTY in a DIGITAL AGE I

EN B CALL M L P ON I OFFICE

Hi e er one, I ha e been the IT Officer ith JCUDSA for t o ears no (starting in 2020). 2021 bro ght pon ne challenges as st dents transitioned to a digital age of ed cation, as e ere req ired to contin e o r ed cation online hile the lect re halls remained empt . This meant making o r desk o r sole learning space for ho rs on end per da as e connected thro gh o r comp ters to BlackBoard Learn ith o r lect res. Being the IT Officer, I didn't mind sitting at m comp ter for ho rs on end, b t I ill admit it as challenging. Being st ck at o r desk b o rself, it became harder to sta moti ated, hen the bed looked far more in iting than listening abo t the cranial ner es. Website design is a enjo able hobb of mine and ith e tra time e had to o rsel es hile locked a a in o r rooms, I pgraded the ebsite red cing the ork for social representati es and m self alike. I am al a s setting p ne feat res to the ebsite so keep an e e o t for m ne geni s ideas! For 2022 I as l ck eno gh to ha e been oted as the President so I look for ard to presenting in JCUDSA ith a ne position. Happ Ne Year!
