Helmet Sizing Guide Fitting a Helmet Properly

Determining the Rider’s Interior Helmet Shape.

ESTABLISHING A RIDER’S FIT A properly fit helmet (to maximize both comfort and safety) should fit snugly around the crown of the rider’s head the way a baseball cap must fit to stay on a player’s head. The rider should sense firm, even pressure at all contact points with no extreme pressure points that could become uncomfortable over time. The sensation should be of the helmet “cradling” the head as opposed to “grabbing” it at limited points.

Arai helmet interiors for the North American markets are based upon variations on the oval (somewhat longer front-to-back than side-to-side), because heads here tend to be more oblong than round.

LONGER OVAL (Longer front-to-back, Narrower side-to-side) This fit offers additional forehead room for the rider who finds that most helmets have pressure points in the forehead.

STEP 1. Measure the rider’s head with a cloth tape to get a starting point for sizing the helmet. Measure above the eyebrows and ears where a baseball cap would rest. STEP 2. Fit the Head and not the Face. The helmet must fit the rider’s head first. Ignore the rider’s facial features and dimensions as these can be accommodated by adjusting the cheek pad size.

INTERMEDIATE OVAL (Less length front-toback, Slightly wider side-to-side when compared to Longer Oval). This fit shape lies in the middle between heads that are more pronounced Longer or Rounder Ovals.

FACT: Fitting a helmet to a rider’s face or cheeks could result in the rider being fitted for a helmet that is up to 3Xs too big! Arai originated removable cheek pads to ensure riders could achieve a comfortable “crown fit” regardless of their facial dimensions exactly to avoid this situation. TIP: If a rider is obsessed with the discomfort of putting the helmet on, remove the cheek pads and make sure that the rider is properly pulling the chin straps away from the cheeks so that helmet opening is at its widest. Once on, fit the helmet to the crown of the head. Then remove the helmet and replace the cheek pads and have them try the helmet on again explaining that a properly fit helmet will result in pressure when putting it on the head. STEP 3. Don’t guess! A rider should wear a helmet for a short while before purchasing it. Fifteen minutes in the shop will give the rider a fair assessment of how well the helmet will feel during an extended ride. If at the end of this period the rider senses any discomfort have them try on a helmet with a different Interior Helmet Shape. If after this short fitting test the rider feels discomfort based upon pressure points in specific areas (as opposed to a general sense of the helmet being “too tight”), or the size selected is correct size rider according to the measuring tape, he should try on another helmet with a different head shape but in the same size.

ROUNDER OVAL (Shorter length front-to-back than Longer Oval and Intermediate Oval, Slightly wider side-to-side when compared to Longer Oval). Still based upon an oval, this interior shape is for heads that are fuller with noticeably greater width when looking the rider in the face. Open Face, MX and Dual Purpose helmets come in a single interior shape as the nature of these helmets is different than that of an enclosed full face helmet. Consider these helmets to be in the middle of the interior shapes as listed above. PLEASE REALIZE THAT THE BEST HELMET SHAPE FOR ANY GIVEN RIDER IS THE ONE THAT FITS HIM BEST. Corsair-V The Ultimate Race Helmet Patented AirWing®

Arai’s exclusive, adjustable AirWing® greatly reduces drag, turbulence and buffeting for unprecedented aerodynamic performance and rider comfort with reduced neck fatigue. Five setting options allow for rider specific aerodynamic tuning. Lowest settings for tucked racing positions, middle settings for sport riding and upper settings for upright riding positions.

Flared Hyper-Ridge

Outward flaring of the Hyper-Ridge produces a larger opening for improved entry and exit comfort while a reinforcement band circles the shell opening adding strength while lowering the helmet’s center of gravity resulting in improved overall “balance” for a more comfortable, lighter feel. Greater comfort, including a quieter helmet, all with a greater sense of security via a positive fit for more head shapes all because of a cheek pad. With 12 components assembled by hand, each RX-Q cheek pad is labor intensive, but worth the effort. Once a rider tries on a RX-Q, they immediately realize the difference it makes in the RX-Q’s fit. Arai sculpted the RX-Q’s cheek pad so that it became part of the helmet security system and not just a comfort pad. As soon as you pull a RX-Q on (via a new wider opening for a more comfortable entry) the difference is instantly apparent. Once the RX-Q’s cheek pads slide into place they provide the most positive feel you will have ever felt from a helmet as they come to “cradle” your face for a secure feeling unlike any other helmet. Additionally, an RX-Q’s cheek pads’ ergonomically engineered contour results in increased surface area that distributes contact to a greater area for not only a secure fit and feel, but fantastic comfort at the same time. A Shell Made Just For You

The mark of a great helmet manufacturer is the ability to manufacture a helmet shell as small as possible for lighter weight, a lower center of gravity, and greater stability in the wind for greater comfort over time and yet still be able to pass the Snell standard. Not an easy thing, especially in 2010.

The openings of a helmet are a very serious matter. Only through precise engineering and advanced production techniques and materials can a manufacturer enlarge these while maintaining safety levels. Yet wider openings and vent holes mean extra venting, a wider ﬁeld of vision, and easier entry and exit.

Since the very beginning all Arai shells have been hand-formed by artisan craftsmen to ensure every helmet gets personal attention. This attention to detail combined with the most advanced helmet technologies in the world results in a helmet that provides a level of comfort and safety a machine could never produce.

The RX-Q delivers on all fronts. A new larger eye port means that peripheral vision has been extended for greater visibility and awareness of what is around you on the streets and byways of the real world. (The RX-Q uses the same visor as the Arai Corsair-V and the Vector-2.)

Aerodynamic Design For The Real World

Think about the egg. A simple shape without exaggerated add-ons to break up its smooth shape thereby weakening the shell’s ability to dissipate energy, or worse yet to catch on something. Nature has a way of weeding out crazy ideas over the millennia coming to the optimum solution. When it comes to helmet design, Arai ﬁgures that all the R&D money in the world could not trump thousands of years of evolutionary design. Pretty good judgment if you think about it, because “safe” design is better than “cool” design any day of the week. Besides, Mr. Arai insists on it from his engineers. Arai shells are smaller size for size than shells from other manufacturer and share the organic shape of the egg for a simple reason. It delivers a windslicing yet stable platform for real world performance no matter which way you turn your head or what bike you ride - all while providing the best possible energy management platform. So why would Arai, why would you, make any other choice?

Drop Dead Gorgeous ... and Functional

The unique, sculpted Hyper Ridge is part of the RX-Q’s aerodynamic design that along with the diffuser and exhaust vents combine to provide a new level of stability. SIGNET-Q Product Release The RX-Q has fast become the most popular Arai helmet with its wide range of impressive features including improvements in airflow and aerodynamic stability through re-engineered ventilation and shell design, lowered ambient sound levels via a new cheek pad design, and maximized peripheral vision with a wider eye port all designed for extreme comfort for long oval head shapes.

Signet-Q True Long Oval Fit Long Oval Plus

MaxVision V Shield

The Signet-Q reintroduces an Arai fit that many rider’s have missed since the Arai Signet Series last existed.

Arai has taken its exclusive MaxVision Shield Technology to the next level by including brow vents in the shield and offering it as standard equipment on the Signet-Q.

Fitting longer (front-to-back) and narrower (side-to-side), Arai’s exclusive Long Oval offers a fit with additional forehead room for the rider who finds that other helmets have pressure points in the forehead often made obvious by the red spot on the rider’s forehead upon removing the helmet.

MaxVision Shields fully cover the helmet opening with the chosen color insert and enable the rider to change that color from clear to dark smoke to light tint, yellow or amber to suit changing light conditions without having to carry additional shields. At the same time, MaxVision Shields are anti-fog for all-weather use.

And for the rider with a slightly wider fit, the Signet-Q features Arai’s exclusive 5mm removable padding on each cheek pad for a custom fit.

MaxVision Shields are also available in a race version without brow vents. SAI shields also fit the Signet-Q.

FCS Cheek Pad System Many people find it uncomfortable to put a helmet on their head. Some even buy helmets that are too large so that they can put them on comfortably, which is a bad idea for more than one reason. But how do you design a helmet that goes on comfortably yet fits securely once on the rider’s head? Arai started with the RX-Q cheek pad, known for its quiet seal, and took it one step further. A compression pad in each cheek pad squeezes tight against the shell as the rider pulls the helmet straps apart to put on the helmet (A to the left), and springs back to fit securely against the rider’s cheeks once the helmet is on the head (B). No more squeezed, pinched, tugged, ripped or pulled ears, earrings or hair. Easy to put on, easy to wear, easy to take off.

As the rider pulls the chin straps out ward to pull the helmet on, the Compression Pad is squeezed against the shell resulting in more room for the rider’s head to enter the helmet.

Once the rider has the helmet on the head and lets go of the chin straps, the Compression Pads spring back into position sealing the cheek pads against the cheeks for a firm, quiet fit.

Shell Construction

Decades of experience, research, testing and evaluation have resulted in the empirical data that concludes that fiberglass-based construction is the ideal solution for building a helmet shell. Fiberglass’s singular ability to flex, disperse impact energy and rebound without damage simply cannot be matched by any other material (no matter how fancy the name) providing the best combination of strength, structural integrity and impact flexibility for use in a helmet. Arai’s proprietary aerospace fiberglass takes this to another level of quality and is used in the Profile’s ScLc (Super Complex Laminate Construction) shell for an exceptionally strong, flexible, lightweight shell.

Ventilation

Patented Dual-Pivot Chin Vent

Easy-to-operate, two-position dual-pivot hinge mechanism allows for increased chin vent airflow capacity to the facial area through an activated carbon-coated foam filter, and up along the faceshield to aid in de-fogging.

Tool-Less Shield Removal System

Why a pod-based system when pod-less systems are easier to make? Arai’s experience shows that the flat spots required to utilize a pod-less system on the curved helmet shell diminish the shell’s structural integrity. Something Arai would never do.

One-Piece Liner

Comprised of several different material densities Arai’s EPS liner is like no other. Over 20 years ago Arai pioneered this technology and it is the only helmet manufacturer offering this unique EPS. The direct-fused contact area that each EPS cell shares with it neighboring cells creates a mutual support. As one is crushed under impact, the surrounding cells assist with the energy absorption. (Liner pieces that are simply fitted or glued together cannot rely on such a high-level support bond.)

Free Flow System (FFS)

Arai’s unique pull-down spoiler and integrated neckroll has been designed to further reduce wind noise and turbulence.

Organic Shell Shape

The Profile’s shell not only looks smaller, it is smaller. Vector-2 Like its predecessor, the VECTOR-2 combines the hallmarks of Arai including Arai’s legendary commitment to unsurpassed craftsmanship, protection and performance with upgrades in the original Vector’s comfort and fit. The VECTOR-2 was designed for the serious rider who is committed to safety but who is not looking for all the bells and whistles.

Improved Liner Design

The VECTOR-2 features Arai’s latest comfort liner design which features a 5mm Peel-Away Temple Pad Layer that allows the rider to adjust for pressure and fit at the side of the forehead for greater comfort without buying optional liners. It, also, minimizes the use of plastic and maximizes contact with the head resulting in the convenience of a removable liner with the comfort of a full liner. Fully removable and washable.

Hyper-Ridge

Arai’s distinctive Hyper-Ridge reinforcement band along the bottom of the shell adds reinforcement and shell strength at the shell opening while lowering the helmet’s center of gravity resulting in improved overall “balance” and a lighter feel allowing the helmet to “rest easier” on the head for greater rider comfort. Why is that significant? Because unlike many helmet makers who reduce the shell material at the bottom of the helmet, this allows Arai to maintain the shell thickness to the very edge for added strength where it is needed most.

ACF2 Front Vent

The VECTOR-2 uses an upgraded ACF vent with a larger ‘door’ for a tighter seal when closed.

Adjustable Cheek Pad

The VECTOR-2 utilizes Arai’s latest cheek pad design which, as usual, allows the cheek pads to be removed, cleaned and replaced with alternative sizes, and now also features a removable 5mm Peel-Away Layer that allows the rider to make custom fit adjustments to his helmet without having to buy additional cheek pads.

Extreme Peripheral View

The VECTOR-2 utilizes the wider eyeport first introduced on the Corsair-V for a great field of vision.

Tuned Rear Vent-Wing

The VECTOR-2’s ACR2 Exhaust Vent System is wind-tunnel tested and tuned for markedly improved ventilation and heat dissipation.

XC-Ram Open Face Helmet Design Redeﬁned The XC-RAM, yet another example of Arai’s decades long tradition of taking what has been proven to work and improving upon it with advancements in function and safety. The most pronounced feature signaling a change in the XC-RAM is extending coverage over the jaw line by 30mm. This provides almost 1.2”more coverage than a traditional open face helmet. Just as intriguing is the fact that this new extended jaw line houses a full EPS cheek pad to provide the same protection as an Arai full face helmet at the jaw line.

A vented neck roll utilizes the prevailing airflow around the rider’s neck to enhance the helmets ventilation by drawing air out of the vents incorporated into the neck roll.

XD3 The Ultimate Crossover Helmet The XD3’s “crossover design” means the XD3 easily crosses over into many riding styles quickly and easily changing between adventure touring, dual-sport, supermoto, commuting and street riding. Visually it may look like a dirt helmet, but the XD3 comes with a full-height faceshield that tucks under the peak when installed. Both the faceshield and peak can be installed in no time, and used together or apart for a range of styling and use options.

Ventilation

The XD3 features 5 intake and 7 exhaust vents including Arai’s diffuser system. Its front side vents increase air intake while the front center vent provides fresh air to the mouth or adjusts to redirect air along the faceshield to prevent fogging. Exhaust vents in the neckroll draw out hot air.

Re-Designed Peak

One of the keys to the original XD’s uniqueness was Arai’s Twin Cam Shield Pivot System that enabled thes shield to flip fully up beneath the peak without protruding. The shield also maintains a low profile when raised so that the peak can be fitted closer to the shell. The XD3’s peak has been further redesigned for improved stability and airflow.

Shell Construction

Decades of research has shown that fiberglass-based construction is the ideal solution for building a helmet shell due to its singular ability to flex, disperse energy and rebound without damage. Something no other material (no matter how fancy the name) can achieve. Arai’s proprietary aerospace fiberglass, as used in the XD3’s cLc (Complex Laminate Construction) shell takes this to another level to achieve a strong, flexible shell in a very lightweight package.

Like VX Series, the XD3 has a unique rounded chinbar with less protrusion making it potentially less likely to catch or dig in during a spill. And its oval form has long been known to be extremely strong and efficient in managing impact.

Dry-Cool® Interior

The XD3 interior features Arai’s innovative Dry-Cool® fabric which encapsulates micro water cells in the fabric to improve moisture and heat transfer from the rider’s head into the airflow around a Space Frame Liner leaving the rider’s head drier and cooler, and allowing the liner to dry faster between rides.

One-Piece Liner

Comprised of multiple densities, Arai EPS liners are like no others. And even after 20 years of pioneering this technology, Arai is still the only manufacturer offering this safety advantage whereby fused contact areas between each EPS cell create a unified support structure. So, as one cell is crushed the surrounding cells assist with the energy absorption.

The #1 Fog-Resistance System The Pinlock System is based on 3 principles that together work like nothing else. 1. Moisture Absorbing Material Unlike a shield, a Pinlock insert lens is made out of a soft, porous plastic. 2. Material Thickness: Thicker material absorbs more moisture and offers more impact protection. 3. Double Lens System The air-tight pocket between the Pinlock anti-fog insert and the faceshield creates an extra insulation layer further increasing the anti-fogging properties of the system making fogging up is a thing of the past!

How Does it Work?

Pinlock anti-fog inserts are created out of a moisture absorbing plastic and include a silicone seal that creates an airtight pocket between the shield and insert. Held in place by 2 adjustable pins for easy installation/removal as weather conditions change. The MaxVision System does not require the use of optional pins.

Wireless technology aimed at eliminating the wires between devices such as cell phones, GPSs, headsets and now stereo music devices. Small radio chips are installed in N-Com BlueTooth2 Eboxes to make the helmet compatible with BlueTooth® devices including Bluetooth®equipped cell phones, a passenger’s helmet equipped with a BlueTooth2 Ebox, a GPS unit, a Bluetooth® stereo music device or other compatible Bluetooth® devices.

Each BlueTooth2 Ebox Kit includes an Ebox unit, Multimedia Wire X stereo cable, battery, battery charger, seal and an adaptor for use with Basic Kits, and offers wireless connection from helmet to helmet or between a helmet and Bluetooth-equipped devices such as a cell phone and/or GPS. Myth: They must be hot to wear during warm weather. When inflated correctly (i.e. not over inflated), a RXR Chest Protector’s big advantage is that it is not only light and flexible, but that it is able to flex and create voids for air to flow through. And many RXRs now come equipped with center vents to allow air to flow through the chest protector as well. The reality is that any thing that is touching or pushing against your body is going to be “hot” during warm weather whether it is made of plastic, foam or lighter weight materials like an RXR. Protection does have a price.

Myth: They are just air ﬁlled chambers, so they cannot be very puncture resistant. This is totally incorrect. Two levels of puncture resistance exist at a minimum. First the tough outer DuPontTM Cordura® shell provides a barrier to penetration and it does not have large holes that might allow sticks or branches to catch or sneak through like hard plastic chest protectors. Also the bladders are made of a tough poly-vinyl that would be very difﬁcult to penetrate even if it did not have an outershell. And because of their lightness and compactness a jacket or additional layer can comfortably be worn for trail riding. A Note on Cover Usage OSI Covers are not designed for use when trailering. Motorcycle covers are designed to take the physical abuse of the weather and environment in place of the bike and its finish. As such a cover will deteriorate over time due to a combination of factors that may include UV rays, acid rain, heat, among others. Without a cover a bike’s finish may fade, crack, tarnish or rust. BACKORDERS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SETTING UP YOUR J&D WEB ACCOUNT

Merchandise that is out of stock will automatically be placed on backorder. Backorders received within 30 days will be shipped upon receipt unless otherwise advised. Ground freight will be prepaid upon shipment of backorders except on new products that have yet to be received to enable shipment.

RETURNS All returns require a Return Merchandise Authorization Number (RMA#) issued by J&D Walter Distributors. Packages that do not include the RMA# on the shipping label may be refused at the receiving dock. An RMA# request may be made by contacting a J&D Customer Service Rep at 800-833-3503. Please see J&D Walter’s Return Policy for full details.

FREIGHT CLAIMS Title to merchandise passes to the customer on delivery to the shipping company. All claims for damage or shortage should be made with the carrier at the time of delivery. Upon arrival of a damaged package, contact the carrier immediately to arrange for an inspection and/or pick up of the damaged merchandise. Only the recipient can initiate this process as the carrier of record assumes responsibility for the package upon pick up from J&D Walter Distributors. Save the packaging in the condition in which it arrived. Contact J&D Walter Distributors if you require any information to make a claim with the carrier and to notify your Sales Representative of the situation.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 and enter your e-mail and password to log on to the website under your account.
