PRESIDENTS REPORT J U L Y 2010

Di‟s role is not to: 

Organise a run on somebody‟s good idea

Recently, after a year of indecision, I sold the Vanden Plas. It went to a good home and will continue its existence, being enjoyed and appreciated by another classic car buff.

Chase up register secretaries for run info

Be surprised to hear of a run that had gone ahead without her consultation.

I replaced it with a four cylinder Japanese car which, being new, starts and stops when I want it to and where everything works. It handles brilliantly, runs on the smell of an oily rag and has more air bags than there is space to put them. But it‟s not complete; there is something missing. While I am not one to personify inanimate objects by given them names, my new car, despite its technical wizardry, is devoid of the thing that all of my Jaguars have had in spades. This car has no soul. It does all I ask of it with sewing machine precision, but when all is said and done, it‟s just a car.

This role is an important one as most of the fun aspects of our club are club runs. We have been lacking a coordinated approach of late and it has become quite messy. We‟ve only achieved a harmonious outcome because of the good will and sensibilities of our members. Di‟s job is the smooth out the creases so please support her and remember all club events must be coordinated via Di. Regards Rick

When you climb aboard a Jaguar you enter a partnership; an agreement. You are both going somewhere. You do it together. As well as that I no longer feel special on the road. I wonder why passing Jaguar drivers aren‟t waving back at me until I realize that I‟m invisible. I‟m just another motorist. On another note I would like to welcome Di Adamson in the role of Events Coordinator. This position is somewhat similar to the role of Sporting Secretary, which is an executive position according to our constitution. It will be great to have Di sit around the exec table to help me keep the rest of the exec in order! Di‟s role is quite straight forward. She will: 

Co-ordinate the runs proposed by the register secretaries and slot them into the club calendar of events

Update the webmaster on approved events for listing on the web and in CM

Have executive authority to approve the listing of various events after consultation with the relevant register secretary 4

REMINDER JAGUARS NEVER FORGET

After the 26/07/2009 I will be on holidays and will not be doing any more Renewals for year 2010/2011. If you are not financial and have not rejoined by the 26/07/2010 you will possibly have to pay a rejoining fee. Members who have not renewed and currently have their Vehicles on Historic Registration are no longer legally allowed to drive their Vehicles and JDCSA have to inform the Department of Motor Registration. Regalia Coordinator(s)

WANTED This position is now available within the Club. It is a position that suits say an enthusiastic couple or two couples. During 2009 – 2010 we have reduced the stock levels with a view to changing the process for the coordinator(s). What we have in mind is for a smaller number of product lines with the Jaguar embroidery e.g. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Fleecy Vests Polo Shirts – men’s and ladies Caps Fleecy Jumpers Jackets

A quantity of say 6 of each size would then be held in stock so that a member could order on-line or at a general meeting with the coordinator(s) and the items would then be posted or collected from a later meeting. Ron & Claire Palmer (through Palmer Agencies) have offered to continue to supply the club with the product lines and assist the coordinator(s) with product line choices and the embroidery. The club’s lock-up could be utilised for this purpose or alternatively if the member has space at home that would be OK. This means that at a general meeting the coordinator(s) only need bring a sample of each size along (as the same manufacture would be used for the product lines this eliminates the need for multiple samples). In addition to the above the various badges and other small items would be available for sale at a meeting. In addition the coordinator(s) would be responsible to maintain a cash float, bank sales monies, send the banking receipt to the Treasurer, maintain stock levels, and sell Regalia at Jag Day. Should anyone be interested in this role please either talk to Rick or me. Regards Tim White

T HE F EDERATION OF H ISTORIC C LUBS 19 T H J UNE 2010 A recent meeting of the FHMC clarified the following points: 1. All LHD vehicles must have a LHD exemption certificate carried in the vehicle at all times. Apply at Regency Motor registry. 2. Vehicles eligible for historic rego are: 

RHD vehicles 30 years or more, rolling date

LHD vehicles last date eligible, end 1973

LHD vehicles eligible for full rego, 30 years rolling date

LHD vehicles younger than 30 years rolling must convert to RHD or wait for 30 year anniversary.

3. Child restraints, new law from 1 July 2010, Historic Registered vehicles exempt. However, the wording i n the act is not clear regarding vehicles fitted with seat belts and they may have to comply with the new law. 4. Some insurance companies require engineer’s certificate for vehicles fitted with seat belts, if that vehicle did not have manufacturer’s seat belt anchor points from new. Check with your insurer. This also has implications with the government 3 r d party injury insurer, who are now pursuing “at fault drivers” for a $300 excess and “full recovery” of DUI claims. 5. Imported vehicles modified from origi nal after end 19988 are being refused import permit. Proof of date of alteration is on the importer including photo evidence. Photo is also required of vehicle prior to loading and a copy should be with the invoices. Vehicles imported prior to the end of 1988 will have the year of manufacture altered to the year of modification. This has implications for LHD vehicles. Refer to 30year rolling date for the need to convert to RHD. This change to import regulations will stop many imports. For example, a MKII Jaguar fitted with a Supra gearbox, which is a year 2000 part and therefore fitted after 1988, will now be refused entry and when presented at a port of entry – impounded. Remember, any vehicle with A/C mus t comply with the CFC permit conditions. 6. Vehicles on historic rego (CHVR) are not to be used for “Hire or Reward” which also extends to the following: 

Reward is deemed to be displaying a sign/logo/phone number of a current business. This is only acceptable if there is proof that the business has been ope rating continuously from the era of the vehicle and the vehicle was used by that business.

The Great Overland Adventure By Andrew & Leanne. Phillip & Ciaran Shouksmith

We made a family trek to Darkest Queensland and participated in the….

2010 Jaguar National Rally, (And then returned home around the eastern coast of Australia). As ever, the planning for the trip to the 2010 Jaguar Car Clubs’ National Rally started (on the ferry) on the way back from the previous rally (in Tasmania). This did not fill me with confidence, as almost everyone in our usual rallyist group had some reason why they wouldn’t be going to Queensland! Unfortunately this position was confirmed, and we ended up being the sole South Australian representatives at the 2010 National Jaguar Rally. Oh well never mind! Since moving to Australia a few years ago, we had decided to make the National Jaguar Rallies an excuse to see the country, so we saw no reason why we shouldn’t continue with or without travel companions. The trip would go ahead regardless! Besides we had a new (to us) late model XJ40 to take the trip in! Every option including Climate Control (I did a serious upgrade of the in car entertainment – more of this later)! I scanned the internet, and when the Rally website appeared, was one of the first to register. As it happened, I had quite a block of leave to take, so we started to plan for an extended holiday that would begin before the rally, and extend well after it! Tempus fugit, and suddenly it was March 2010 and time to begin our journey to Ashmore, and the National Rally. Sunday the 28th and our first day on the road was a solid 720 Km from our home in Hynam, across the Wimmera and the Mallee to Narrandera in NSW. We had only got as far as Edenhope (30 Km’s from home) when Leanne and I were giving thanks for the DVD/CD/MP3/Games Consoles that we had installed in the back of the rear headrests; (for those of you who don’t know the Shouksmith family, we now travel with one eight and one nine year old technophile)! We travelled to Jazz and Folk in the front, (Nakamichi 6 CD Stacker), and they travelled to Ben 10 17

and Disney in the back (Headphones)! Narrandera was a pleasant, if somewhat run down town. (Ten years of drought in Australia has destroyed a large number of inland communities) where we had a clean and pleasant motel, and a lovely meal at the RSL for very little money. We all slept in, in the morning, and had to make a hasty departure for Orange the next day, where we were staying with good friends. All I can say: is that the company, food and liquid refreshment was excellent. Next morning, my wonderful wife drove the next leg of the trip! This stage of the journey was from Orange to Armidale, about 350Km’s across interesting hilly countryside...and RAIN! Did I mention that we were the drought breakers? We brought a band of rain with us from Bendigo up to Narrandera, and then across to Orange. Our layover allowed this to intensify, and we travelled with an accompanying tropical low from central NSW all the way up to New England. It rained and rained and.....you guessed it! We got so drenched trying to find a restaurant in Armidale, that we ended up buying Pizzas and taking them back to our motel. The bathroom was filled with drying clothing! Next morning we ventured into town, and discovered the restaurant district that we had totally missed the previous evening. Never mind, we made use of this for a sumptuous cooked breakfast before we headed off across the New England highway to Queensland. The highway out of Armidale is wall to wall trucks, very few passing lanes, unsealed shoulders and a disused railway line that parallels the road – a typical Australian situation that reflects the influence of the trucking industry and the lack of forward planning by any level of government in this land. (For a more detailed personal analysis of this situation please don’t hesitate to contact me)! We carried on to Tenterfield where we stopped at the beautifully preserved Railway Station. This would have to be a model for any other historical or preservation society, and is an encapsulated time warp of a 1950’s NSW regional station. We could have spent twice as long as we had here, and reluctantly headed on to Warwick in Queensland for a late lunch. We then travelled across some of the most beautiful, twisting and interesting roads that we have come across in Australia: Beaudesert, Canungra, Nerang, Mt.Tamborine, Southport and finally to our destination at Ashmore and the 18

Rally HQ: The Royal Pines Resort. We checked in, and were assigned some of the most sumptuous rooms that we have ever been in. Lee and I had a “Corner Spa Suite” with spectacular views across the golf course; the boys had an adjoining suite to themselves with a double bed each! The bathrooms were all marble and gold, with towels that were at least 3cm thick and hot and cold running everything. I had to point out to our two that this was the exception and not the rule when it came to accommodation! As we were a day early for the Rally, we planned to take the boys to one of the numerous theme parks on the Gold Coast, and they chose “Dream World”. All I will say is that it cost a lot, the boys loved it, and it was an interesting experience! On to the Rally. On Friday the 2nd April we got up early for a hearty breakfast and a walk around the magnificent grounds of the Royal Pines. We then registered for the Rally, picked up our Regalia pack, and then over the next three days did the usual Rally things :- Caught up with old friends, ate and drank too much, drove to some beautiful places, and watched with awe as my youngest son (aged 8) appointed himself the celebrity presenter at the formal dinner! (Just try to find a picture at the Prize Giving that doesn’t have Ciaran in it)! On the Monday, and after a great breakfast at the Surfers Yacht Club, we were off on our travels again. Thank goodness we were travelling south on the Pacific Coast Hwy., as it seemed that most of Queensland was heading back north, after the Easter holidays. We made our way quietly to Port Macquarie, where we sat and watched the thousands (millions) of fruit bats head off for their night time feeding grounds, and had a superb meal at the Loaded Hog Restaurant. The steaks were great, the kids meals wonderful, and the price very reasonable. More than we could say about the accommodation – if it hasn’t been upgraded since the sixties can you call it retro, and charge accordingly? Incidentally the fuel in Port Macquarie was far and away the most expensive on the whole trip. As you can see we have mixed feelings about the place, lovely views, but very expensive!!Next day was a long trip, right through Sydney, which we’re going to leave for another trip, and on to Wollongong. Once again we brought the rain with us, so we ended up eating in our lovely motel room. Any place that tells me that they have charged us too much, and gives us a generous refund is alright by me! Wollongong was an interesting place. It is an old industrial steel town that is now reinventing itself and is really trying to shake off its old reputation. We 19

really liked the place, and are looking to come back and have a more thorough look around the area. (Note to Jaguar Drivers Club of Australia {that’s the NSW club for those not in the know} – please have your next rally in or around Wollongong). The next day’s travel was probably my favourite journey of the entire trip, the magnificent coastal route from Wollongong all the way down to Eden. For those of you who have never taken this part of the Princes Highway, and the numerous little detours down to the sea, you truly don’t know what you have missed. The roads are interesting and challenging, the views spectacular, and for those of an epicurean persuasion, the food options enroute are bountiful. We dined at the Professional Fishermans Club in Eden, and you would be hard pressed to find better or fresher seafood anywhere. What is landed that morning is served that evening. As has been said before – I will return. Our journey took us around the coast and into Victoria and Bairnsdale. We had a couple of nights here, relaxing, and exploring the local area. Of interest is a super little Motor Museum at Maffra (between Bairnsdale and Sale) housed in an old factory; this has exhibits from all over VIC, NSW and SA. They reckon to change their displays every three months, and have no problem in attracting new items from all over the states. I could have spent many hours here, but we had to press on with the final part of our trip. The final weekend of our journey was to be centred around Castlemaine and the Steam Festival held at the Victorian Goldfields Railway. We made our way up from Eastern Victoria, avoiding the temptation to stop off in Melbourne, and ended up in the goldfields area for our last stay over. We will definitely be returning to this part of the world. The accommodation was comfortable and reasonable, and the food choices were many, varied and good value. The steam experience was great, and we followed it all off with an extended walk around the lovely old botanical gardens. We were so impressed with the old “Railway Hotel” that we ate there both nights, and will return next time we come to Castlemaine! The menu is so good and so varied! The journey back home seemed a bit of an anticlimax. The dogs were pleased to see us, and our wonderful house sitter had as usual done us proud. As expected the Jaguar performed flawlessly on the journey, and there were no mechanical problems. It was sublimely comfortable, fast when required, and excellent on the back roads. We used no oil in our nearly 4700 Km’s around Australia, and averaged 29 Miles per Gallon for the journey (Sorry I’m really a pre metric sort of guy). The Pirelli P4000 tyres provided excellent grip and comfort, but were rather noisy and wore very rapidly - a set of Michelins is now on order. Would we do it again – Of Course! Come and Join us next time Andrew, Leanne. Phillip and Ciaran Shouksmith

The Cat’s Giggle An elderly couple, Margaret and Bert, moved to Texas. Bert always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots so, seeing some on sale, he bought them and wore them home. Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, "Notice anything different about me?" Margaret looked him over. "Nope" Frustrated, Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the boots. Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, "Notice anything different NOW?" Margaret looked up and said in her best deadpan, "Bert , what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it'll be hanging down again tomorrow." Furious, Bert yelled , "AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S HANGING DOWN , MARGARET?" "Nope. Not a clue", she replied. "IT'S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!!" Without missing a beat Margaret replied, "Shoulda bought a hat, Bert. Shoulda bought a hat."

Got a joke? Send it to the editors and we’ll put it in the CM
