Volunteers are required for the SA Jag Day committee and also the JDCSA 40th Birthday celebrations next year Over $700 of Regalia was sold at All British Day The Classic Jaguar Touring Group are meeting with JDCSA members on the 7th March at Birdwood
Treasurer Tim White-Balance of JDCSA main account $20,869.62
Noel Trew-8 new members processed in February
7 Applications received so far for March Guest Speaker
Di Adamson-Di raised the issue of Regalia for JDCSA. Di canvassed a number of different options the club could consider including the pros and cons of each option: eg Previous option of ordering regalia and then having to cart to & from general meeting. Is regalia only brought to general meeting quarterly.
Should regalia only be purchased for big events such as ABD, SA Jag Day etc.
Could we piggy back off say JDC of Victoria regalia list.
The option of utilising an external corporate merchandiser where members would complete a form including payment and this sent to the supplier with either delivery (at a cost) to the members home or alternatively available for pick up at next general meeting utilising an on-line merchandiser
In each of these options what importance to members is the income generated in selling regalia? The club has been looking for a regalia officer for approximately 2 years. The role can be as easy or as complex as that person so desires
Secretary (Julian Lugg) 2
The important issue is that if members value something akin to what we have then someone needs to step forward to volunteer
Discount being offered to all ACJC affiliated members on a new Jaguar
There are 3,500 members with ACJC affiliated clubs
Di asked that members take the questions back to their register meeting and discuss with other members and provide feedback to a committee member so that a decision can then be made to move forward
Historic Federation
Neil Murrie-SA Government still to make final decisions.

General report from ACJC meeting in February
Jaguar is releasing new models in the coming years 3
PRESIDENTS REPORT April 2012 April already, how time flies when you are having fun with Jaguars and the JDCSA. How many of you have purchased a new Jaguar? The offer from JLRA was certainly very generous and must have made a few of us stop and think what about it! I did. The modern Jaguar, whilst very exciting has not necessarily made me think about upgrading, until the XF, especially the new diesel model which has received rave reviews around the world. My reticence towards the modern offerings has nothing to do with looks, engineering or design, all of which are first class, but rather the inability to DIY. I have come from a generation of owners where doing it yourself is very much part of the fun of ownership----there is always great satisfaction in being able to bring an older car to life again. But, as we get older is there some merit in letting someone else get their hands dirty? Buying a new car (and an XF would be the one I would go for, as I find this model particularly attractive and of a practical size) is a big investment. The debate went on, should I sell all the old cars and go for it. There did not seem to be any valid justification to keep the older ones and add another to the stable. In the end I decided that I still get a lot of pleasure from doing my own repairs and that I am not that old after all. The status quo remains for the moment. Perhaps another time. Thank you to JLRA for their generous offer and I hope that there may be similar opportunities in the future. As you are aware the JDCSA has, for the last five years or so, taken the view that National Rallies should be structured differently, especially the formal concours event, to attract the younger generation members who will be the future backbone of the Club and the Jaguar movement in South Australia----indeed Australia. Currently, the ACJC is still very much concerned with formal concours and is constantly reviewing judging procedures, trophy presentation, reference material and data tabulation. We have recently received a large amount of information to review and comment on in the aforementioned areas with fairly tight deadlines to be met. In the past, due to the relatively low interest in concours, the JDCSA has tended to rubber stamp any recommendations coming out of the ACJC. However, I believe that if we are to see where we have come from and where we are going at the National level, the JDCSA must be more pro-active in the future and consider recommendations in more detail, as they are presented. The volume of work involved (this includes the current recommendations and deadlines) is considerable and I am not convinced that those on the ACJC committee fully appreciate this fact and the impact that it has at the local club level. It would be easy to devote one or two or even more Committee meetings to this subject alone, at the expense of business, which is of immediate importance to JDCSA activities, a situation none of you would be happy with. It should be appreciated that the JDCSA presentations to the ACJC re changes to the National Rally over the past few years have been well thought out in both their detail and reasoning, but have represented a quantum leap in the running of this event. The views expressed in those presentations remain unchanged and are still on the table for further discussion at the ACJC. The current drafts from the ACJC relate to changes to the management of the National Rally in its present form. I have forwarded the documentation related to the present round of changes to the Executive Committee, which of course comprises all the Register Secretaries. I would urge you all to look at the changes at Register level in the first instance. I believe that if we are to properly assess the current changes and future changes, a working group reporting to our ACJC representative and the Executive should be considered as a necessary part of the Club structure, if we are to influence, or wish to influence, the future of the Jaguar club movement in Australia. Such a group would be able to provide the necessary preliminary assessments for Executive and our ACJC representative to discuss and approve. In addition, the working group, as far as possible, should have both pro and non-concours supporters to ensure a balanced approach. The composition of the group should be flexible to allow members with different areas of expertise to contribute according to the business at hand. Look at the material at your next Register meeting and let Rick or an Executive member know your views and in particular if you would be prepared to offer your services as a member of a working group. This may sound like bureaucracy at its best, but the Executive must stay with its fundamental responsibilities to the Club, yet find a way of continuing to involve our members in the National picture in a positive way. I look forward to your thoughts and comments.

ACJC MEETING – FEBRUARY, 2012 The latest meeting of the delegates to the ACJC took place on Sunday, 12th February, 2012 and here are some of the key points from that meeting.
Jaguar Australia We again were graced by the presence of Kevin Goult, Brand Manager, Jaguar for an extended period during which he gave a very upbeat presentation of future plans. He advised that the Jaguar range is nearing the end of its product cycle and that the CX-16 indicates the direction for the next 5 years. He talked about how the JLR business goes through product cycles and that Land Rover had been through a product cycle refresh and is currently going through a buoyant phase with new product introduction (ie, all LR models are very new!). To date Jaguar has relied on “refreshments” of existing models but with four years ahead of new product, Jaguar would soon follow the upward trend. They are currently in recruitment mode in the UK for new employees, mostly with an engineering background, and there is a significant push for the JLR apprenticeship programme. Over the past 12 months Jaguar Australia had been able to achieve $5.5m worth of PR through appearances in magazines and on front covers and successful launch events. The Jaguar product is interesting journalists and publications which is a positive sign of momentum for the Jaguar brand in Australia. The 2.2 litre XF diesel has done remarkably well whether in the luxury, premium luxury or portfolio configuration... About 50% of buyers were opting for the higher spec and there is a 2 months order bank. Jaguar had been in the top five cars in the JD Power “Premium Niche” category for a number of years now. The Asian market is the definitely the growth region. Jaguar has registered 3 years of growth to 2012. Jaguar has asked the ACJC the cost of advertising in all their magazines for a twelve month period. Details regarding advertising are quite varied across the Clubs for a full-page advertisement. A submission to Jaguar is being prepared. Club Committee Involvement in ACJC Matters Discussion took place as to the degree each Committee involved themselves in discussion of ACJC matters. Some Club Committees are very involved whilst others leave it to their elected delegate to use their own judgement. The Council encourages Club Committees and members to take a positive role in ACJC matters. Role of Authenticity Liaison Officer at National Rallies Extensive discussion has taken place over recent times and the following was resolved: An Authenticity Liaison Officer (ALO) will be appointed by the ACJC in respect of the Concours d'Elegance to be held at each National Rally. Their role is solely in respect of authenticity matters. They will not be a person from the Club which is hosting the National Rally. The ALO is to initially be a mediator in the event there are differences of opinion between the entrant and the Authenticity Judge with respect to an entrant car. The Authenticity Judge(s) are to specify authenticity defects in an entrant's car in the comments column of the judging sheets. Following the authenticity judging, the Authenticity Judging Pages will be collected by the Chief Judge for presentation to the ALO. The ALO, accompanied by the Chief Judge, will discuss the points lost for authenticity with each entrant. At no time will the Authenticity Judge be involved. Where an entrant disputes the Authenticity Judges' scoring, the ALO is to liaise between the entrant and the Authenticity Judge(s) concerned (still being accompanied by the Chief Judge) until a suitable outcome is reached. At no time are the entrant and Authenticity Judges allowed to directly discuss the disputed score. The ALO must always act as the intermediary. Determination of correctness regarding authenticity is achieved through reference to facts, knowledge of others and/or reference books available at the time. In the event that mediation cannot occur, the ALO will be the sole adjudicator on how the matter is resolved. At no time may the Chief Judge appointed by the host Club also act as an Authenticity Judge.

Car Judging in the Shade Discussions concluded that there would be no mandate for judging of condition and cleanliness to be in tents but did recommend that all cars should be judged in the best available conditions. Dealer Equipment and Options at Concours Discussion of the many dealer-fitted options, and their acceptance in Concours judging, was further clarified by recognising that any such options needed to be “Authorised within the warranty network”. The terminology becomes:
“If it was original or optional at factory level for that particular model of car, as at compliance plate date, it is acceptable”.
It was suggested that a text by Nigel Thorley be included as a reference text for all Concours. This was expanded to a recommendation that a list of standard texts be defined and included as ACJC reference material and that those texts be included in the items freighted to each Rally with the trophies. The ACJC therefore requests all member Clubs to put forward their list of reference texts within the next 3 months so a proposed library list can be circulated for acceptance. When done the National Rally Manual will be updated accordingly. Application of Rules for the Perth 2012 Rally Discussion took place as to whether the publishing of an intent to change the rules relating to the National Rally actually constituted a change in the operative rules from that moment. It was concluded that the rules as published in the NRM on the ACJC website at the date of the Council meeting approximately six months prior to the National Rally will be the rules that apply to the next National Rally. It is recognised that changes must be made to the published rules as per the NRM not less than six months before the event. National Rallies Reports were received re the Perth Rally in 2012 and the scheduled one in Wollongong in 2013. Things are in place for the Perth Rally but members are encouraged to place registrations now to avoid missing out on particular events. The 2013 Rally will emphasise the 60th anniversary of the C-Type win at Le Mans and what that meant in the motoring world. The 2014 Rally is scheduled to be run by the SA Club. Extensive discussion has occurred within the Clubs, and at the Council meeting, following the request received from SA that the Rally not include a Concours event. The request is still under consideration/review by the ACJC who would be interested in the views of members. Concours Scoring. The Council continues to review the methods of scoring at Concours and various reviews and submissions have been received and discussed. The aim in reviewing the previously-used system is to address the long-standing problem of “the old car vs new car” comparison, to simplify the scoring whilst maintaining its integrity, to incorporate electronic means to speed the process and reduce scoring mistakes. Again members of the Clubs are encouraged to be positive regarding the system and to make their views known to delegates as to how they believe problems can be reduced. It was agreed that the latest updated suggestions would be distributed to delegates for review by their Clubs and input as to what steps they believe should be followed in order to further improve the scoring process.

Minutes of the XK, 7, 8, 9 Register held at Ossie & Rayeena Petrucco’s - Wednesday, 7th March 2012 The Register conducted no formal meeting in March. However, on the normal meeting day, which is the first Wednesday of the month, we hosted a lunch on behalf of the Club for the UK, Classic Tour visitors at the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. The tour started in Sydney in mid-February and travelled through New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania and then via the Great Ocean Road to Warnambool and on to Renmark, SA. Leader of the tour, Richard Galvani, had met some of our Club members previously when he ran a Jaguar in Classic Adelaide In perfect weather, the Classic Tour party of 12 XKs and 6 E-types and several modern support vehicles arrived from Renmark from about mid-day. Those who came via Mannum took a bit longer! The visitors’ cars and about 30 Jaguars belonging to Club members looked spectacular arranged on the grass at the rear of the museum. A brief clip featured on one of Adelaide’s evening TV news bulletins. An excellent barbeque lunch was provided by people from the Birdwood Lutheran Church. Several of the visitors however, found the Museum’s displays more tempting and almost missed their lunch. After lunch Club Vice-President Di Adamson welcomed the visitors on behalf of the Club and wished them well for the last leg of their Australian tour which was the short run into Adelaide. Thanks to Club members who willingly helped with marshalling cars at the museum site. Future Meetings Sunday, 1 April – Goodale’s at Balaklava. Parting is “Such Sweet Sorrow” Ex president Rick Luff’s story on his XJS
There comes a time in most relationships when it’s time to move on, and for me and my ‘88 XJ-S, the time has now arrived. As with most romantic films, we dissolve back to the early days; how we met and how our relationship has bought us to this difficult, yet necessary decision. Yes, there have been others along the way. Like sands through the hour glass (that phrase may not be original) some have moved on although some have remained. This then, is our storey. My addiction to Jaguar cars is best described in my article ‘My Jaguar Story’ which appeared in The Classic Marque some years ago and is currently available on our web site. I finish by mentioning that my XJ6 shares the garage with my XJ-S. Well the Sovereign has gone and the XJ-S remains. The garage has gone too now I think of it! For some unfathomable reason a single Jaguar was simply not enough and I fantasised about owning a V12 XJ-S. Be careful what you wish for, they say, because you might just get it. I drove a number of local cars as well as combing the web sites looking for that perfect car: right colour, right interior, low mileage and great price. And I found it. Unfortunately I was not in a position to buy it so dropped the whole idea. Six months later I looked again and my dream car had been relisted. I wasn’t going to let it go again and within a few weeks had negotiated a (now better) price and flew to Melbourne with my daughter and drove it back home that day. That was in 2005 and since then I have has an enormous amount of pleasure, and to be truthful a little pain with this car – after all it is a British machine. The lists of modifications are small yet significant. New radiator, twin electric fans from the US, modern A/C compressor, cold air induction and a revised, yet subtle exhaust update. Springs are original and the shockers have been upgraded giving it a firmer yet still luxurious ride. While the car sported a set of wire wheels for a time, it now wears Superlite Alloy Rims. During the past six years it has been serviced and polished within an inch of its life. But don’t get the wrong idea. This is no closet queen. The best thing to do with a V12 it to give it the beans and two Classic Adelaide events has proved this, running smoother after the event than before. Enough of the sales pitch. So, what is so special about an XJ-S anyway? Everybody, except Jaguar, thought that the XJ-S was to be a successor to the E-Type. Not so. The E-type is a sports car. The XJ-S is a Grand Tourer. Different purpose, different style, different era and different market. As stunning as the E-type was, it was dated in both comfort and refinement and unlikely to meet upcoming US safety laws. Jaguar also had a close eye on who might be buying this new car, so the XJ-S was to become more of a prestige executive transport and the launch price of 8,900 pounds proved it (a V12 Daimler was a little over half the price). For the first time a Jaguar cost the same as a Ferrari. Based on the then current XJ series floor pan and suspension the car was to be shorter than an XJ6/12 and longer than an Etype. With a significantly lower drag coefficient than the E-type this car was built to perform. The rubber air dam underneath the chin along with the controversial flying buttresses at the rear worked to making this one slippery high speed machine. It’s very easy to be travelling 50kph faster than it feels, so if you get a chance to drive one, keep one eye on the speedo. Between 1975 and 1995, 112,052 vehicles were produced in both V12 and 6 cylinder form; coupe, cabriolet and convertible. With one major and a few minor facelifts, this car spanned three decades. How many other manufactures can claim this? Today, a particular body shape is lucky to last 5 years. Sure, names like Commodore and Camry are still in use but you’d have to acknowledge that today’s versions bear no resemblance to the originals, as they are completely different cars. The XJ-S was not. So if you’ve always wanted a V12 XJ-S now is the time. While good examples are available for a modest price, they are becoming rarer. The predicted rise in value that occurred with the E-Type has yet to happen with the XJ-S, but the time is fast approaching. Get one while you can.

What’s ‘Humphrey’? ‘Humphrey’ is the world’s only operating four-stroke, internal combustion pump! The pump was invented by Herbert Alfred Humphrey (1868 –1951), an eminent British Gas Engineer and Chemist. His aim was: “to produce a pump of great simplicity and strength of construction in which the explosive force is exerted directly on the water and in which no rotating flywheel, solid piston, rotating crank, connecting rod, bearings or glands of any sort are required”. The Humphrey Pump is basically a U-tube in which in which water is made to oscillate by periodically exploding a mixture of gas and air at one end. The oscillating column of water (approximately 300 tonnes) acts as a ‘flywheel’ and the inlet mixture valves, scavenge air valves and exhaust valves are interlocked to ensure the correct working sequence. A mechanism operated by the combustion head pressure automatically performs the valve interlocking and spark plug ignition timing.
The period of a complete cycle is determined by the length of the U-tube or play pipe. The static head and stroke determine the cushion and compression pressures, the volume of gas admitted and the explosive force obtained. The latter is dependent on the calorific value of the gas and the mixture ratio. The pump is powered by Producer Gas which is generated on site. The two Humphrey pumps were installed to serve the Cobdogla Irrigation Area in 1922 and were decommissioned in 1965. They were the only pumps of their type in the Southern Hemisphere. One was restored to operating condition by the Engineering & Water Supply Department as a Sesquicentenary Project in 1985/86.

The Cobdogla Humphrey Pumps are well awarded! 1985—An Item of State Heritage. 2010—Institution of Engineers, Australia—National Engineering Heritage Landmark. 2011— Institution of Mechanical Engineers (U.K.) -Engineering Heritage Award. The Humphrey Pumps are in good company! The Jaguar E-Type also received an Engineering Heritage Award from the IMechE in November 2011—the only motor vehicle so recognised in the 72 Awards to date. The IMechE Award plaque for the Humphrey Pump will be unveiled at Cobdogla during our visit on 20 May.

The Cat’s Giggle A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten. We all looked at each other and another customer asked, 'What is a seven-hundred-ten?'
She replied, 'You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one.' She replied that she did not know exactly what it was, but this piece had always been there. The mechanic gave her a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like. She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. He then took her over to a car just like hers which had its hood up and asked, 'Is there a 710 on this car?' She pointed and said, 'Of course, it’s right there.' The mechanic fainted. If you're not sure what a 710 is, this may help
