Classic Marque Classic Marque is the official magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia. The magazine is produced calendar monthly with the exception of January. The Deadline for all copy is the last Tuesday of each month. The Editor reserves the right to accept, reject or modify content submitted for publication. The opinions/views expressed in published articles are wholly those of the respective authors, and are not necessarily those of Jaguar, the Editor, the Club, or the Members. Advertisers and sponsors who place advertisements in the magazine do so because they value their association with the JDCSA. Placement of these advertisements should not necessarily be taken to mean the club endorses the services offered.

Club Torque We have been very spoilt over the last few
weeks with great weather for taking our Jaguars out on the prowl. As April moves in the temperatures are dropping and we are not as keen to head out. I am looking forward to the daily weather of Minimum 20’s and maximum low 30’s that Caloundra is currently getting. If that pattern holds the National Rally should be beautiful. We have 5 cars heading over for the rally and 3 vehicles staying on for the Post Rally tour. We will share our photos and thoughts on our return. Last Tuesday was the Multivalve meeting which was held in the Solitaire Automotive Showroom. We were looked after very well by Nigel, Alex, Rebel and Ellysia and enjoyed the spectacular range of new Jaguars on display. There were 6 vehicles featured all in striking colours with a variety of
accessories such as Roof Luggage Box, Bike Carriers and even a Jaguar Ski Bag. This expanded range is appealing to a variety of markets all with that classic Jaguar luxury and style. I can’t wait to see the new F Pace. Thanks Ron for organising a great night. Sunday 17th April 2016 is the McLaren Vale Classic and Vintage Parade. Our club, along with the Stag Club have been allocated the beautiful lawns of Serafinos as our display and lunch venue. Sunday, May 1st is also the British Classics tour at Victor Harbor which is usually a great event. On Saturday, May 7th we will be having a President’s Run to the Barossa. We will be touring Carl Lindner’s Collection of Jaguar Vehicles ($10 per head) and lunch at a venue to be decided. There will be several Jaguars joining us from the Jaguar Drivers Club Hunter Region. More information will be provided as available. Our April meeting will include a demonstration by Phil Prior our Editor, of our website and how members can get the most out of it. I hope to see you there.

Club Torque Editor’s Burble At our General Meeting on Tuesday April
5, I will be seeking to show members how easy it is to use our club web pages and enjoy some interesting reading and watch some interesting Jaguar related videos. In particular I want to be sure that everyone who wishes is able to access the Classic Marque on-line and explore the different options available. The Club Calendar is also an important section on or web pages and access to this resource when planning events or just to plan what you yourself wish to attend is important. There are so many different club and associated automotive events on throughout the year to attend. I will demonstrate how easy access to the calendar really is. Other pages that cover Historic Registration, Membership, Classified Adverts etc. are all available. Last month I introduced “The Bottom Line” as anew feature in Classic Marque. I would value your feedback on this innovation. These short comments in most cases introduce you to reports, stories and events that can be accessed by the live link provided. I hope you will take the opportunity to follow these links and explore further the stories that are of interest to you. With a simple CLICK of the mouse a whole bundle of interesting stories are available. “There has never been a more exciting time to be a member of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia.” Unfortunately those who only receive a hard copy of the magazine will not be able to access the full story behind these headlines. I want to repeat the offer I made last month and say to all members, if you are having difficulty accessing our web
pages and the Classic Marque in particular each month then please let me know. I will be delighted to do whatever I can to help. I also wish to thank those who have over the past few months contacted me and removed their names from the mailing list for a hard copy of Classic Marque. It is not just postage costs to consider here, there is also the cost of printing, the cost of envelopes and the additional work involved in getting these printed magazines out to those who need them. And that is really the point, there are those who really do need to receive the magazine in the post, and we are pleased as a club to be able to meet that need. But if you have internet access you do not need this hard copy service so please call me or email me and ask for your name to be removed from the mailing list .
Philip Prior (Editor)
SAY NO TO SNAIL MAIL It costs our club approx. $250 per month to post copies of Classic Marque to about 64 members . We realise that some members have no option but to receive the magazine by post. However many of these members do have access to Internet and can easily access the magazine in colour on-line. PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO THE EDITOR AND REQUEST THAT YOUR NAME BE REMOVED FROM THE MAILING LIST.

THE BOTTOM LINE Lynx Motor Cars was founded in 1968 principally to repair and maintain specialist
sports and racing cars but quickly made their name restoring and maintaining original Jaguar C-Types, D-Types and E-Types. The evolution from restoration to recreation was a natural one and soon saw the introduction of its first Lynx D-Type with a road going XKSS following shortly afterwards. Lynx have produced a total of 10 XKSS cars to date with 3 being left hand drive. Lynx’s ethos has always been to recreate an authentic XKSS as close to the original car as possible.

THE BOTTOM LINE Jay Leno's 1951 Jaguar XK120 Hot Rod The 1951 Jaguar XK120 featured in this episode of Jay Leno's Garage might look vaguely like a classic Jag roadster at first, but underneath this cat is something completely different. It was built by Leno's buddy Jason Len of XK's Unlimited when he grew tired of keeping these convertibles stock, and this aluminum-bodied beast was the result.

On a closed highway in the Nevada desert, home to the world renowned Silver State Classic Challenge road race, the actress pushed the F-TYPE SVR Coupe to its top speed1 with the speedometer indicating 201mph(2) - a personal top speed for the star. Michelle Rodriguez said: "Driving this car was insane! I've now broken my personal speed record in the beautiful Jaguar F-TYPE SVR. Reaching 201mph felt amazing, the car drove really smoothly, all my corrections were minimal, I was super focused, and it really reacted in all the right ways.
I don't think I'd ever go this fast without a professional driver seated next to me, but oh man, it was an incredible feeling." "I've always wondered what it was like to travel faster than my top speed of 140mph and, outside of the Autobahn, it's impossible for me to do it safely anywhere else and safety is most important to me. It was refreshing to be able to take myself beyond my limitations, going that fast is a big responsibility but the experience in this car was more graceful than anything I've felt before." Developed by Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations to be lighter, quicker, faster and more powerful while remaining useable day-to-day, the F-TYPE SVR elevates the F-TYPE model range as the ultimate Jaguar sports car. John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, said: "Building upon the awardwinning F-TYPE was a challenging objective. Everything in terms of handling, design, sound and performance had to be taken to a new level, and is what the new F-TYPE SVR delivers. It is a 200mph supercar, but above all one that is designed to be driven every day."

THE BOTTOM LINE Classic cars outperform stock market Every year for the past decade, international consulting firm Knight Frank has issued its Wealth Report, a glossy reflection on the many-splendoured ways one might disperse a massive wad of cash. But it turns out you don't need to be one of the report's Ultra High Net Worth Individuals to make some canny investments in the luxury world. Those who have been investing in classic cars have been seeing double digit returns in recent times – 17 per cent last year and almost 500 per cent overthe past decade. GET THE FULL STORY HERE 13

THE BOTTOM LINE The 1954 Royal Daimler History (Currently being fully restored) This Daimler landaulette’s current rather shabby appearance belies a remarkably glamorous, star-studded past. It all started in 1948 when Prime Minister Ben Chifley received confirmation that King George VI would visit Australia the following year. Although Australia had welcomed many royal visitors in the past, this would be the first time a reigning monarch was expected, and a flurry of preparations commenced far in advance.

The Cat’s Giggle An old man was eating in a truck stop when
three rough-looking bikies walked in. As they passed the old man, the first bikie pushed his cigarette into the old man's pie, then laughed and took a seat at the counter. The second bikie picked up the old man's milk and spit into it. The third bikie turned over the old man's plate on to the floor before joining the others at the counter. Without saying a word to the laughing bikies, the old man put his money down, got up, and left the Servo. One of the bikies said to the waitress, "Not much of a man, was he?" The waitress replied," Not much of a truckie either. He just drove his road train over three motorcycles!"
An Aboriginal, a Pom, an overweight Yank, an Eskimo, a Kiwi, a Tasmanian disabled per-
son, an elderly person from Latvia, a Swedish blonde, a German, an Italian, a drunk Irishman, a Pole, a Greek, an Indian, a Canadian politician, an AfroAmerican, a Mexican, a Dutchman, an arrogant Frenchman, a Brazillian, an Ethiopian, a Turk, a Japanese, a Chinaman, a Russian, an Indonesian, a Malaysian, a Cambodian, a Burmese and a Vietnamese all went to to an upmarket nightclub together. The bouncer said, sorry guys, I can't let you in without a Thai.
An angry wife was complaining about her husband spending all his free time in a bar, so one night he took her along with him. "What'll you have?" he asked. "Oh, I don't know. The same as you I suppose," she replied. So, the husband ordered a couple of Jack Daniel's and threw his down in one shot. His wife watched him, then took a sip from her glass and immediately spat it out. "Yuck, that's TERRIBLE!" she spluttered. "I don't know how you can drink this stuff!" "Well, there you go," cried the husband. "And you think I'm out enjoying myself every night!"
A farmer had some puppies
he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy. "Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies." "Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money." The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?" "Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. "Here, Dolly!" he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up... "I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would." With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands." With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy. "How much?" asked the little boy... "No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love."
THE BOTTOM LINE Light weight E-Types - Six brand-new Jaguar Lightweight E-types are
being meticulously built by specialist engineers, highlighting the capability and expert engineering skill set of the new Jaguar Heritage Workshop. These coveted next generation ‘Special GT’ E-type cars were originally built in 1963 with new aluminium bodies to improve performance. But only 12 of the projected 18 were ever made. The six brand-new Lightweight E-types that now complete their number, fifty years later, will carry the original series chassis numbers of the ‘missing’ vehicles. READ THE FULL STORY HERE 15

Jaguar Classifieds FOR SALE --- 1976 Jaguar XJS V12 manual This original factory manual car was the 77th out of 352 early RHD V12 coupes. The JDHT certificate states the car was built on the 21st April 1976 ( the Queen's 50th birthday ) and delivered new to Henley's Limited in Bournemouth , England. The original colour was Signal Red and the interior was Black Leather trim . The car came to Australia fairly early in its life . I purchased it in June 2002 from a friend ( who sold for serious health reasons ) soon after a "back to bare metal " restoration had been mostly completed . The engine , brakes , driveline and rear end had been fully overhauled to better than new and a fresh acrylic paint job applied . This has never been polished and is now very well cured ! The interior trim , bumpers and other bits and pieces came with the car as well as many spare parts ( bonnet , boot , lhs door and mudguards from a donor car ) . This car was to be a " lightweight " track day special and the air conditioning is removed .The fuel system was to be high octane LPG , to which end the distributor has been recalibrated and an 80 litre gas tank installed in the boot in place of the original tank. An extra roller bearing is installed at the distributor base for longevity and high revs. ( anything in excess of 6,500 rpms ) Due to work and family commitments since then , the car has remained stored ( off the ground and covered in my dry garage ) since 2002 . My wife and I are now retiring and downsizing so there is no room for this

very interesting piece of Jaguar history. There are many more details and a multitude of parts ( choice of wheels ) which can go with the car . The hard work is probably about 80 % done and this represents a great opportunity for someone who appreciates the collectability of this quite rare Jaguar ( especially as I expect very few would have survived ) .The value of the restored original engine and gearbox alone is significant . An ideal restoration project just waiting for the keen XJS enthusiast to complete . There are several extras to go with the car , in particular a set of later model fibereglass bumpers from GWS . These are new and never used, originally cost $1300 . $8—$10,000 Neg.

no coolant circulation. The mechanic who had rebuilt the engine had the pump impellor vanes welded & fitted the impeller not checking at the time if the thing would actually rotate. Bugger! I rebuilt the pump myself & it has been good since. During a Club Run early 2008 I could not get 2nd gear & there was a terrible noise from the engine at idling speed. Having regard for the next Border Run to Broken Hill in November I decided to pull the combined engine & gearbox out. The mechanic had omitted to fit a special thrust washer in the gearbox. Bugger! I had that fixed. Bob Kretschmer The problem of noise was poor fitment of the camshaft chain drive sprocket to the camshaft end plus a non-approved chain by my mechanic. Bugger! Bruce helped me fix all that but there was an additional problem in that some of the valve stem heads had ’worn’ into the ends of the rocker arms making accurate measurement of the clearance impossible. I found later that the mechanic had simply refitted the rocker gear as he found it. Bugger! I fixed all that & re-installed the engine & gearbox. Off we went to Broken Hill for the 2008 Border Run. By that time I had an obsession with engine temperature & had fitted a stemmed gauge obtained from Weber BBQ’s to measure the inside temperature of the roast meat during cooking. I have a radiator cap having a hole in the center through which I inserted the gauge stem into the coolant flow from the engine. Whacko. I found that the engine would happily run at 80 deg. corresponding to Roast Pork on the gauge. Do you reckon I copped it from people like Bob Lynch & his merry men with me running the engine on roast pork! There were many other problems which I progressively coped with but it was a very expensive, frustrating & disappointing start to Jaguar motoring. Marg has been quietly stoic during the ongoing saga. Thank you again with a cherry on top.
(the trials and tribulations) PART 2 1 Trials & Tribulations.
The 2nd Tri-State Border 2007 Run for SS, Mk1V & MkV vehicles was coming up & in September I announced that I would be taking the SS Jaguar. ‘You are mad, you are stupid’ etc. was the advice I generally received. I had only driven it around the block twice & it was neither finished nor road-worthy but I managed to wangle a 3-day permit to drive in the Rally at Bathurst. I borrowed Bruce’s rather heavy car trailer. The combined weight was too much for our Ford Falcon sedan so we borrowed our son’s Mercedes 420 SEL. Off we went. We stopped near Renmark for me to check the load when I saw that the Jaguar sun-roof had gone – bugger! Can not think of any thing to say, Marg was supportive by keeping quiet, thank you. Moving right alongFirst over-night stop at Balranald using Marg’s nightdress taped over the roof ‘hole’. Next day just a few km. short of Hay on the famous Hay Plain the LHS rear wheel of the trailer came off – bugger! Marg telephoned Bruce & Anne who fortunately were still at Hay. Marg found the wheel in the scrub but the hub bolt threads were damaged so I removed the opposite side wheel & crawled along on one axle into Hay where Bruce had already arranged a repair place. 2 The Better Fun Years: Never go anywhere without a trolly jack. Since Broken Hill, we have taken the little car to the following SS Register Border RunsIn 35 minutes Bruce & I had changed the offending hub & wheel, re-fitted the other side wheel with help from the 2009 Mildura, 2010 Wagga Wagga, 2011 Naracoorte, 2012 owner’s dog, purchased a full spare wheel & set off for West Port Fairy, Wyalong our second over night without further difficulty. 2014 Loxton & 2015 Ballarat plus a trip to Port Lincoln as If you think that was a fun day, keep reading! guests of the local Club which included Ross & Betty Gogler. On the Saturday morning we had our usual Static Display in The center of Bathurst city & I noticed during the drive into 3 Post-Build Improvements & Modifications: town that the engine temperature was rather high. I mentioned in Cls 4. above that the restoration build Returning to the motel later the engine nipped up at the included a 1946 Jaguar engine. entrance to the motel & I was able to coast to be inside the At the 2009 Midura Border Run I happened to come across boundary fence. No more motoring for this Border Run, a 1939 SS 1 ½ L engine with engine No. just a few away bugger! Marg was supportive again! from the original, near complete but in very poor condition The Rally Programme included a run around the famous which I bought for $500. Bathurst Race Track & Marg & I drove the Mercedes I had that totally machined but rebuilt it myself over the next instead. few years Back in Adelaide after I had removed the grill & radiator, Bruce helped me with the valve & ignition timing. together to compare road speeds, engine revs etc. I think he is saving his 3 ½ L dhc for the 2016 Tri-State Run.
5 Reflections. Now that I have the vehicle in a reliable & presentable state, where do I go from here? With the money spent & a fraction of the time involved, I could have bought a fully restored MG TF 1500 plus my original Triumph TR4 A in concour condition with plenty of $ to spare. (I have inspected both of the above vehicles recently & they are available) What does that suggest? A financial blunder with an SS Jaguar 1 ½ L sedan as an asset for which there is very little demand & therefore little real value. The new Jaguars hold no special interest for me despite an appreciation of new technology, vehicles & modern life. I will however continue to support & enjoy the JDCSA with my little 1 ½ L until age takes over. Happy Jaguar motoring.
Bob Kretschmer
found travelling in the SS Jaguar upsetting. I tried changing the front springs, rear springs, over-hauling the Luvax-Girling lever-arm shock absorbers, had complete suspension analysis by Pedders, changed the damper oil several times with different grades & fitted new radial-ply tyres, but all to no avail. Having spent so much money on the SS engine I decided to test domestic financial harmony again by buying a Toyota Celica steel-case gearbox which entailed chassis modifications. To help me with the various work I bought a hydraulic scissor-lift which folds flat & lives under the car. A new hydraulic engine removal crane also helps. The trip to Port Lincoln was the last for Marg with the balance problem so I researched shock absorber technology. I was not happy with Pedders special big machine & continued searching until I heard about SupaShock at Magill. In December 2014 I went to see them. As an engineer I was blown away with the level of engineering technology. They treat each car as a project & the MD Oscar Florinotto gave me a quote to re-engineer the suspension. I did not have that amount of money readily available but they arranged a special finance package. OK I said provided the car will be ready for the 2015 All-British Day, it was. Basically they discarded the Luvax lever-arm units & fitted their own specially designed, manufactured & tuned telescopic units. For the purists please note that not a single bolt hole nor weld had to be applied to the chassis. The system allows for complete reversal should that option ever be considered. The end result is a much better car which now allows Marg to travel & to sew in acceptable comfort. That seemed fair. Mr. Florinotto told me he would be happy to come to one of our General Meetings as the Guest Speaker & I passed on that information to the Committee earlier this year.
