Club Torque PRESIDENT’S REPORT Roger and I have had a very busy July. We have been away 3 weeks out of 4. The first week we headed off to Tocumwal and Rutherglen for the week catching up with some friends from Adelaide, Melbourne and Tocumwal. On the Sunday we went to a Swap Meet and Show and Shine in Tocumwal. There were no Jags on display but we did see this beautiful Jaguar and Jag trailer in the carpark.
A visit home then we headed off with Scott, Pete and Kathy Taylor and had a bush camping adventure around Alice Springs and Ayers Rock for 2 weeks. There did not appear to be a Jaguar Drivers Club in Alice Springs and I did not see one on the road probably due to many narrow dirt roads as soon as you get off the main highways. Our Four Wheel Drives performed well on the mostly dirt roads. We returned to Adelaide the night before the JDCSA Presentation Dinner. Thank you to the committee of Peter and Roz Holland, Geoff and Marg Thomas and Bob and Daphne Charman who created a great entertaining evening.
I congratulate our trophy recipients, Roland and Ellie Donders for Most Enthusiastic New Member, Dave Bicknell as Club Person and Ron Palmer (pictured) received the Presidents Award, all being most worthy recipients. I am looking forward to a quiet August and the weather warming up over the next few months. Don’t forget our meeting on Tuesday 4th August, hope to see you there. Di Adamson

Modern fuel has a shelf life of around 4 weeks. It takes around 1 week to get from Singapore to the petrol stations therefore only 3 weeks left. Recommended to always have a full tank of fuel in our old classics when they are sitting in the garage in-between runs. The additive Sta-Bil should be added before parking so that the mixed fuel is distributed around the engine. Sta-Bil removes the issue of breakdown of fuel with water and is compatible with all additives one may add. The 303 product is a protectant and cleaner across many applications. e.g. tyres, wheels, paint, upholstery, fabric tops, carpets, dashboards, rubber seals etc Very important to not put onto real leather, like that used in Jaguars General Business: NIL Julian thanked the Compact Register for hosting the supper and Tim White for doing the minutes The meeting was declared closed at 8.40pm

Jaguar News Jaguar Land Rover Presented with 2015 Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development Whitley, Coventry, 23 June 2015: Jaguar Land Rover has been presented with a 2015 Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, for reducing the environmental impact of its products and its operations. Jaguar Land Rover's CEO Dr Ralf Speth today received the prestigious accolade from Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of West Midlands, Mr. Paul Chandrasekharan Sabapathy CBE. Dr Ralf Speth said "Jaguar Land Rover is honoured to receive this 2015 Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. We are focused on growing a long-term, sustainable business, as leaders in environmental innovation and making a positive impact on society." This is the 14th Queen's Award that Jaguar and Land Rover has received since 1967. It follows a 2014 award for Enterprise in International Trade, for outstanding overseas sales growth.
Aluminium-intensive and advanced technologies The company's 8,000 designers and engineers take a 'whole lifecycle' approach to vehicle development, aiming to reduce impact on the environment right through from raw materials to eventual vehicle disposal. These measures have already helped significantly reduce CO2 emissions, with the company's EU fleet now 25% lower than in 2007. Jaguar Land Rover is a world leader in the design and manufacture of aluminium-intensive vehicles, pioneering the use of closed-loop processes to drive recycled content and reduce environmental impacts across the lifecycle. Benefits include weight saving, higher fuel efficiency, lower emissions, improved crash safety and even better vehicle dynamics.
6
Now, a new family of highly efficient, ultra-low emission, aluminium four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines, named Ingenium, has been developed to power new and future Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. With an Ingenium diesel engine, the Jaguar XE mid-sized sports saloon can achieve fuel economy figures of 75mpg and CO2 emissions down to 99g/km. Hybrid technology is another area that has seen significant Jaguar Land Rover investment in recent years. The Range Rover Hybrid and the Range Rover Sport Hybrid are now both available, using an advanced hybrid system and without compromise to their renowned all-terrain capabilities. Jaguar Land Rover has also significantly reduced its operational energy, waste and water usage at its UK manufacturing plants. The company's new Engine Manufacturing Centre has been designed and built with strong emphasis on sustainability, including the UK's largest rooftop solar panel installation, which will generate up to 30% of the site's energy.
Doubling the workforce and increasing skills Jaguar Land Rover's approach also contributes to social, economic and leadership dimensions of sustainable development. The company is helping to address the UK skills gap with a training and skills programme aimed at young people. (STEM initiatives) and has recruited 2,000 apprentices and graduate engineers in the last four years, whilst also investing in on-going training to develop engineering skills among its workforce. "Jaguar Land Rover is a business driven by design, technology and innovation. It is critical that we attract talented young people to become the next generation of engineers to support our growing business," said Dr Speth. The company also has a sector-leading global Corporate Social Responsibility programme to deliver opportunities for 12 million people worldwide by 2020. In addition to its Queen's Awards, Jaguar Land Rover is proud to be the only automotive company to hold all three Royal Warrants, as an official supplier of goods and services to the households of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.

Jaguar News Jaguar Land Rover Reports June Sales Performance Jaguar Land Rover, the UK's leading manufacturer of premium luxury vehicles today reported June retail sales of 39,602 vehicles, in line with the prior year. During the first half of the year, Jaguar Land Rover has sold 239,212 vehicles, equivalent to the same period last year. Jaguar Land Rover's regional performance year-to-date shows 18% growth in the UK, 16% in Europe and 15% in North America, with Overseas down 11%. Sales in the China Region were down 27% year-to-date, due to softening market conditions and production ramping up for the locally produced Range Rover Evoque. Commenting on the month, Andy Goss, Jaguar Land Rover Group Sales Operations Director said: "Jaguar Land Rover has delivered solid growth in June. I am delighted to see our vehicles performing well, especially in the UK and Europe where sales reached almost 19,000 vehicles this month - a record June for two of our key regions. "Our investment in new products and technologies continues to give us a very strong and desirable range of vehicles, such as the all-new Discovery Sport and the Jaguar XE. Customer deliveries of the XE began at the start of June and it has had an impressive first month of sales."

Jaguar News Jaguar F-PACE Tested to Extremes From the searing heat and dust of Dubai to the ice and snow of Northern Sweden, the new F-PACE has been tested to the limit in some of the most inhospitable environments on Earth. Jaguar's performance crossover offers an unrivalled blend of performance, design and practicality. To ensure that every system functions perfectly even under the most extreme conditions, the new F-PACE has been subjected to one of the most demanding test programmes the company has ever devised. "We developed the F-PACE to offer the ride, handling and refinement demanded from a Jaguar, together with exceptional levels of ability and composure on all surfaces and in all weathers. "Just as we paid obsessive attention to detail over the engineering of every single component, we've exhaustively tested the F-PACE in the most challenging conditions to ensure that it will exceed the expectations of our customers around the world." -Andrew Whyman, Vehicle Programme Director, Jaguar F-PACE At Jaguar Land Rover's test facility in Arjeplog, Northern Sweden, average winter temperatures rarely exceed -15째C and often plummet to -40째C. The 60km of purpose-built handling tracks, mountain climbs, inclines, split-friction straights and off-road areas are ideal for optimising the calibration of the all-wheel drive system, Dynamic Stability Control and technologies such as Jaguar's revolutionary AllSurface Progress Control. The work done here makes sure that, whether on asphalt, snow or ice, the F-PACE delivers the connected steering feel and agility fundamental to Jaguar dynamics DNA. In Dubai, ambient temperatures can exceed 50째C in the shade. When vehicles are left out in direct sunlight, cabin temperatures can soar to 70째C - exactly what's needed to ensure that everything from climate control systems to infotainment touchscreens function perfectly in extremes of heat and humidity. And while the test engineers can relax in air-conditioned comfort as they drive in city traffic, this part of the test cycle is designed to place the cooling systems under very high load through a combination of high ambient temperatures and low airflow. The F-PACE has also been driven over gravelled mountain passes. This is the first time that a Jaguar test programme has included this uniquely challenging environmentm 8
Jaguar Land Rover Welcomes Its Greatest Number Of Undergraduates Jaguar Land Rover, the UK's leading manufacturer of premium luxury vehicles, has welcomed its largest ever intake of undergraduate students to its 2015 work placement programme. This year, more than 6,000 applicants applied on line to the scheme, of which 230 were successful - an impressive increase on the 140 that were recruited in 2014. Jaguar Land Rover's paid undergraduate programmes are designed for students completing their degree, and looking to supplement academic studies with real-life projects that have a real global impact. The scheme allows students to experience twelve week or twelve month placements in the automotive industry. Each programme has been designed to support individuals in developing invaluable skills and gaining world-class experiences. For exceptional candidates, the scheme could lead to further opportunities within the organisation, such as a place on the company's Graduate Programme upon graduation. In fact, this year's Graduate intake will include 63 of last year's Undergraduate recruits. Ian Harnett, Executive Director, Human Resources and Global Purchasing, Jaguar Land Rover said: "We are investing significantly in the future of Jaguar Land Rover, by employing and developing the people that will help ensure our continued success. Great people and great products are the essence of this great British company." On the scheme this year Jaguar Land Rover will see 140 students working within its Product Development department, 40 students working in Manufacturing and the remaining 50 students will be engaged in the commercial sectors, such as Purchasing, HR and IT. Two-thirds of the intake will join the scheme for an exciting 12 weeks, whilst the remaining third will embark on a full year with the business. Rob Gill, Graduate and Undergraduate Recruitment Manager said: "The undergraduate scheme is a great stimulus for our graduate recruitment process and has been designed to inspire the next generation of talent.

The following article is reprinted from the current TRUST (JDHT) Newsletter in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Jaguar XJS Continuing the 40th anniversary celebrations for the venerable XJ-S, the June issue of Classic and Sports Car magazine compared the first with the last in an article by Richard Heseltine. Titled ‘Coming of Age’ the piece considers whether the XJ-S really deserved the criticism it attracted at launch when it replaced the much-loved E-type. The cars used for the comparison were the 1975 XJ-S V12, an original Earl’s Court motor show launch car and the ‘last of the line’ XJS 6.0 litre V12 coupé from 1996 – some 21 years younger!
As it happens, Richard also spent a day with the Trust’s last of the line E-type V12 OTS towards the end of May which will form the basis of a future article in Classic and Sports Car. It will be interesting to read his take on this having sampled its successor a few weeks earlier! The XJ-S in all its guises was also the subject of a major piece in the June 17 issue of Classic Car Weekly. No less than five examples of the XJ-S were taken to the Fen End test track for this review, including a couple of more unusual derivatives – the XJ-S Police Car from 1983 and the 1986 Daimler XJS. Both of these are unique, being built as one-off examples to test their respective market potential. Although the local Police forces enjoyed driving the
18
XJ-S, its compact 2+2 cabin and limited boot space made it a rather improbable choice and, not surprisingly, no orders were forthcoming! The Daimler XJ-S (Pictured below) was developed by the Jaguar Styling team under Geoff Lawson, then Chief Stylist. The project had begun as an exercise to develop a removable steel hardtop for the XJ-S Convertible programme – using the XJ-S Cabriolet as a platform. A body had already been prepared at Park Sheet Metal when the hardtop programme was declared infeasible. Engineering Director Jim Randle then asked Geoff Lawson (assisted by Fergus Pollock) to develop a design for an up-market XJ-S using this body as a start point. The steel hardtop was welded to the cabriolet body with lead loading used to blend in the seams, and the removable cabriolet roof panels were skinned in steel. Various other luxury elements were added and it was decided to ‘dress’ the car as a Daimler. It was taken to a market research clinic in Los Angeles in late 1986 but did not receive very good results and the project was shelved – the car subsequently being passed to the JDHT in 1989 where it has been ever since, making periodic appearances at events.

XJ 420G Mk10 Register are heading to St Cecilia’s in Peterborough in August for a Murder Mystery to solve.
Murder at Ashford Manor – the Dastardly Death of Sir Donald
Episode 2 - How it all began Chief Inspector Hercules Bullock soon ascertained that it had all started with the horses. Some months past the Master was preparing to ride his favourite horse, a magnificent but headstrong stallion called Centurion, intending to go for a gallop through the estate. As he prepared to mount, Centurion reached back and cheekily bit Sir Donald on his left buttock. Sir Donald in shock and pain stumbled backwards in front of the stable hands in to a barrow of freshly mucked manure. There was much snickering from the stable hands which put the Master in to a terrible rage and he stormed back to the Manor not to be seen for the rest of the day. The following morning several large lorries were assembled in the stable court yard with all the horses, Centurion first followed by Little George the draft horse and lastly Lady Katherine’s cherished black mare, curiously called Magenta, promptly loaded and dispatched to the knackers yard. Dougal McGinty the Stable Master a young and very handsome fellow who lived in the Stable Cottage, tried in vain to stop this abomination, knowing how much Magenta meant to Lady Katherine, and for the fact that he too would be dispatched shortly after the horses had departed. By the end of the day all the trappings of this once magnificent Stable were gone as was a large contingent of house staff. As premised so was the Master of the stables Dougal McGinty. There was much consternation and shock amongst the members of the household as to actions of the Master. Lady Katherine was hysterical and from then on refused to speak or to dine with Sir Donald. Dougal McGinty was furious because he was now unemployed and had to return home to live with his mother. Mrs McGinty was furious because her son Dougal was now unemployed and was now back living at home with her. Chalmers was grumpy because Sir Donald actions had created such disarray in his once orderly and peaceful household. Over the ensuing weeks a fleet of luxurious Jaguar motor cars were observed to take up residence in the palatial stables, followed closely behind by regular visits to the 20
Manor by Sir Donald’s new motoring friends, whom Lady Katherine considered to be cads and bounders invading her home and directing much unwanted lurid attention her way. She was livid that they should take such liberties with their conduct in the Manor. Mrs McGinty, a woman of somewhat surly and bad tempered disposition on her best day, was at wits end with having to cater to the Masters new Motoring entourage. After some time Chief Inspector Hercules Bullock summoned all involved back to the Library to reveal “Who dunnit?” Was it Lady Katherine? Was it Dougal McGinty? Was it Mrs McGinty? Was it Chalmers? Or was it Mikos the Master Mechanic (curiously know as Evan)? Who Dunnit? It was a conspiracy most vile. Mrs McGinty, angry about her son’s dismissal, the excessive demands of serving Sir Donald’s Caddish motoring enthusiast friends, and finally Sir Donald’s unreasonable demands for roast Highland Pheasant upon his unexpected return, had administered a slow acting sedative into the dinner hoping that it might eventually kill him. Lady Katherine, wanting revenge for her husband’s soulless destruction of her favourite mare Magenta, his thoughtless squandering of her fortune and the excessive funds spent on his new motoring adventures, and for filling her house with unwanted guests had locked the study door. Dougal McGinty, seeking revenge for Sir Donald’s soulless destruction of his stable of magnificent horses and subsequent dismissal, conspired with Lady Katherine (who was also his secret lover) to kill Sir Donald, taking the act of plunging the carving knife in to Sir Donald’s chest and pinning the invoice in order to implicate Mikos the Master Mechanic And Charmers who, overcome with extreme grumpiness, uncharacteristically turned a blind eye to the strange events of the evening. Mikos the Master Mechanic, who had threatened to do Sir Donald harm should his bills not be paid, was declared to be the only innocent party. However to this day, his bills and freight charges remain unpaid……

Member’s Pride From a Holden 48/215 to a 2001 Jaguar XKR . . . .
I grew up in country NSW, in the Southern Highlands. Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale and Robertson is a fairly wet area, some parts have 1000mm of rainfall a year. Being wet and a dairy farming area the roads to properties were very average, goat tracks in some cases. Any prestige car seen in town, such as Jaguars, Daimlers and Rolls Royce's were driven by people from Sydney who had holiday homes in the country. The locals drove Holdens and Fords. I always admired the shape, interiors and mechanics of the Jaguars and Daimler cars as I served my apprenticeship as a motor mechanic on Rootes Group vehicles and then Ford and would occasionally see Jags etc. in town. My first purchase was a Holden 48/215, followed by a modified Morris 1000, a Holden FE, then a Holden FC Panel Van. I arrived in Adelaide on a working holiday, and in 1969 married Josephine and stayed here! I purchased the Daimler V8 in 1990. It was in fairly average condition, having been used as an everyday car. I had
21
previously restored a 1928 Essex Roadster which I had bought in 1972. So I was ;looking for a new challenge. The Daimler had been sold in England in November 1964 and registered in early 1965 to E.J. Jobson Ltd. Surrey. I don’t know when it came to Australia, it was owned by a family who lived in Blackwood. They kept the original books when they sold the car to J.R. Harris from Banksia Park. The Daimler had done 78,000 miles when I bought it from him, and I was given the books at an All British Day soon after. Over time I restored it to be ready for Geoff and Marg Thomas’ daughter Angela’s wedding, and our own daughter’s weddings. Friends children’s weddings followed. It has been a terrific car, travelled to Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne and around Victoria and South Australia. Last year we decided that something a little more comfortable for long trips would be nice, you know, airconditioning, power-steering etc., so we sold an MG we owned and bought a 2001 XKR convertible from a doctor who lived in St. Peters. Emerald green, 41,500 kms. I have had to do a few repairs to it. Hydraulic roof hoses, suspension bushes, with timing chain tensioners and water pump yet to do. It has been on a trip to the Mornington Peninsular and to the Tasmanian National Jaguar Rally and post rally tour. Not a problem, terrific on the highway, power to burn, fuel consumption very good. We are really impressed with the car and look forward to future Jag outings. Noel Orford

The Cats Giggle Two police officers responding to a domestic disturbance arrive on scene. After discovering the wife had shot her husband, they called their sergeant back at the station. "Hello Sarge" "Yes" "It looks like we have a homicide here,” he reported. "What happened?" asked the Sergeant. “A woman has shot her husband for stepping on the floor she’d just mopped." The Sergeant asked, "Have you placed her under arrest?" "No sir. The floor is still wet." A man was dining alone in a fancy restaurant and there
was a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He had been checking her out since he sat down, but lacked the nerve to talk with her. Suddenly she sneezed, and her glass eye came flying out of its socket towards the man. He reflexively reached out, grabbed it out of the air, and handed it back. 'Oh my, I am so sorry,' the woman said, as she popped her eye back in place. 'Let me buy you dinner to make it up to you.' They enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they went to the theatre followed by drinks... They talked,
they laughed, she shared her deepest dreams and he shared his. She listened to him with interest. After paying for everything, she asked him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful, wonderful time. The next morning, she cooked a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy was amazed. Everything had been so incredible! 'You know,' he said, 'you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?' 'No,' she replies. 'You just happened to catch my eye.'
