Club Torque Letters to the Editor Hello Di I believe this petition should be circulated/supported by JDCSA for a number of reasons. 1. The Humphrey in particular is a unique piece of early engineering and is the only working example left in the world. It was awarded a certificate of recognition by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (UK) in May 2012 in the company of a display of Etype Jaguars provided by JDCSA. The E-type is the only car to have been recognised by this award a year or two earlier in the UK. Most of the awards have been for engineering icons located in the UK so the Humphrey pump was special for its recognition outside that country. 2. Our member Ian Pascoe was instrumental in undertaking the restoration of the pump some years ago and so it has been a subject of interest and discussion within the JDCSA for many years. 3. The pump was part of the development of irrigation in the Riverland area and being the only working (complete) pump is really a world heritage icon. If the committee supports the concept of circulating the petition within our club may I suggest that you contact Ian who I am sure would even be prepared to give a quick talk at the February meeting. He is just as passionate about the pump now as he was many years ago when he oversaw its restoration. Please note the closing date for the petition. Peter Holland NOTE: Ian Pascoe will be Guest Speaker at our Monthly General Meeting on Tuesday 3rd February ____________________________________________________
Cobdogla Museum Petition Uncertain Future For the Museum Following the gas leak incident in May 2012, SA Water issued a DO NOT RUN order for the Humphrey Pump pending investigations into the cause of the leak and the design and costing of remediation works. A preliminary assessment conducted by SA Water estimated that significant expenditure is required to bring the Pump and Museum to an acceptable standard. Following an initial assessment, SA Water indicated it would be unable to commit to the capital upgrade required for the Pump and associated infrastructure or to subsidise the ongoing operation of the Museum.
This preliminary estimate of the costs associated with decommissioning the Pump and ensuring that the Museum is safe for use are in the range of $215,000-$300,000. The Cobdogla Steam Friends and the Barmera National Trust subsequently appointed a sub committee which prepared a submission to SA Water outlining the history of the museum and the necessity of SA Water continuing funding to the Museum. In addition, letters were written to the C.E.O of SA Water, Mr Ringham, and to Minister I. Hunter asking that this decision be reversed. Minister Hunter replied that the decision stands, although SA Water is prepared to consider transferring the assets to another party on the basis that they accept responsibility for ongoing maintenance and operation of the Pump and Museum. The sub committee considers that the cost estimates given by SA Water are too vague and a request to them to give a break down of the estimates has so far been unanswered. There is no indication from SA Water at this stage what works were covered in the estimate. The Cobdogla Steam Friends and Barmera National Trust have prepared a Petition to Parliament with the following request. The following petitioners request that your Honourable House will urge the State Government to take immediate action to have SA Water continue to own and support the Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum whilst allocating the necessary funds to facilitate the ongoing operation of the Humphrey Pump and Museum and to enable current and future generations to appreciate the State's water heritage. The Cobdogla Steam Friends and Barmera National Trust are seeking your support in their endeavour to have SA Water continue their previous funding arrangements for the Cobdogla Irrigation & Steam Museum. If you are able to support the Cobdogla Steam Friends and Barmera National Trust by signing our petition, and also having your friends, family etc do so, then please reply promptly to this communication. A petition will be sent to you, which must then be returned by hand delivery or by mail (P.O. Box 535 Cobdogla S.A. 5346) by Friday, February 27th. 2015. Thanking you for your support, The Cobdogla Steam Friends Society Inc. The Barmera Branch of the National Trust. Replies to: enquiries@cobdoglasteammuseum.com.au Denis 04 1788 3353

club a great club to belong to. I like that word, ‘Belong” because it is an inclusive word, a word that embodies the idea of feeling accepted, being at home, being loved and all those basic needs we have as human beings. To feel as though we belong is the opposite of feeling lonely, feeling rejected, feeling unimportant, and will always bring out the best in any club or group of people. One thing is certain, there is always room for improvement, we can always do more and do it better. Here are a few ideas for us as club members in 2015. 1. Determine to speak each month to at least one person you have not yet spoken to in the club . Remember “a friend is a stranger you have not met yet”. 2. Drop in on a different register meeting as a visitor during the year. 3.
Well, looking back on last year certainly has its benefits and value, but in my opinion only so far as we can learn and move forward into the New Year with optimism and a spirit of hope. 2015 is a new year and we need to approach it positively and enthusiastically both in our personal lives and relationships as well as a club. What do you wish for your club in 2015? What would you like to see happen? What new initiatives would you like to see implemented? But most important of all, ask yourself what are you prepared to contribute? There is so much that every one of us can do to make our

Jaguar News
Welcome to the first issue of ‘The Trust’ – a new newsletter for the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (formerly known as Jaguar Heritage). Based on popular demand for continued news about the goings-on in the Jaguar Heritage world, this trial edition of ‘The Trust’ has been put together as a Christmas Special. Further issues may follow in the New Year, frequency to be decided. It focuses on the various activities and events that have involved the JDHT team or its vehicle collection – many of which continue to be in support of the parent Jaguar Land Rover business. As reported in the final few editions of Jaguar Heritage News, the new JLR Heritage business operation is continuing to expand its range of activities – with the Heritage Driving Experiences being the most recent addition – and communications about these will be handled by JLR via the www.jaguar.com website or through press releases.
Naming & Branding: To avoid the confusion that has existed over the last few months over the ‘old’ and ‘new’ Jaguar Heritage, it has been decided that the JDHT will now be referred to as the ‘Jaguar Heritage Trust’. The Jaguar arm of the new JLR Heritage business will be known as Jaguar Heritage and is adopting a new logo as shown above This new logo and identity is being used as the umbrella for the whole range of JLR’s Jaguar Heritage activities – Heritage Parts, the Browns Lane Workshop, the Driving Experiences etc. The logo previously used by the Trust (with the words ‘Jaguar Heritage’ underneath the Jaguar lozenge) will be progressively phased out. Some detail elements of the new corporate identities for both JLR and the Trust are still being worked out and will be communicated in due course. Roles & Responsibilities: This is another area that is still under review. At this stage not very much can be said other than that the Jaguar Heritage Trust will continue to exist and will continue with its primary role of preserving its historic vehicle collection and the archives of Jaguar Cars Ltd. All enquiries relating to the Trust’s vehicle collection or its extensive archive of images, artefacts and documents should continue to be sent to the normal points of contact as detailed on the Trust’s website.

All-weather, all-surface confidence and safety to be delivered by instinctive all-wheel drive and Jaguar's revolutionary All-Surface Progress Control technology The Jaguar F-PACE will deliver an unrivalled blend of performance, style and practicality 11 January 2015: Jaguar has today confirmed it will introduce an all-new model to the Jaguar line-up, to go onsale in 2016, named the Jaguar F-PACE. Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar, commented: "We received such an overwhelmingly positive response to the C-X17 concept car last year that we just had to make it a reality. "The Jaguar F-PACE, inspired by the F-TYPE, represents a perfectly judged balance of performance, style and practicality. It offers a unique combination of Jaguar sports car inspired exterior design, fused beautifully with a thoroughly practical and spacious luxury interior. The FPACE is our family sports car."
The Jaguar F-PACE couples class-leading interior space and exceptional on-road dynamics with five-seat usability to produce a true performance crossover. It will encapsulate everything that Jaguar stands for: beautiful design, precise handling, a supple ride, luxurious interior finishes and cutting-edge technology. Speaking in Detroit, Andy Goss, Jaguar Land Rover Global Sales Director said: "In 2015 we will celebrate Jaguar's 80th year. We have started it by announcing our first performance crossover which we consider to be the ultimate practical sports car - a car that builds on the marque's founding ideals of Grace, Pace and Space to become one of the most innovative Jaguars we've ever developed. The F-PACE has now begun its engineering and development testing programme ahead of the new model going on sale in 2016." The F-PACE will be manufactured in Solihull, UK.

Inspection requirements for Historic Registrations have changed as most will be well aware. It is now the owners responsibility to have their historically registered vehicle inspected every three years in addition to the signing of a Statutory Declaration annually. This means that by June 2015 you do need to have your vehicle inspected by one of the club’s authorised inspectors. The inspector will sign your log book to indicate that you have complied with this requirement. This is a very simple inspection and can be done at regular club outings by arrangement with one of our authorised inspectors. Each Register has appointed inspectors and a 6

Member’s Pride Bobby’s Retirement Present From day one, when Jaguar introduced the ‘S’ Type, I just liked the look of them. But after restoring ‘Big Red’, it was not until I retired from the Fire Service that we had a few spare dollars to buy the ‘S’. It was at Jag Day (North Haven) when Kevin Goult, General Manager of Jaguar Australia attended and I told him of what I intended to buy. He informed me that he had personally designed the under carriage of the ‘S’ type and he went on to say that if possible, ‘look for a V8’ The search lead us to Melbourne where there was about 6 to choose from. One being the V8. After looking at several others, it only took a quick glance at the V8 sitting in the showroom of Flinkier Motors and Daffy and I were soon driving it home. The car is still like a dream to drive with enough power when you put the foot down to make the need for a quick change of underwear. Bob and Daphne Charman

Williamstown – Big Hit
The XJ 420G Mk10 Register run to
Williamstown for a Sunday lunch was a great success with 45 people enjoying a short run up through Gawler and Sandy Creek, then into Williamstown for lunch. The run was the result of a run by the Multi Valve Register about a year and a half ago, when, on our way to the Barossa, we stopped in Williamstown to stretch our legs. The Licensee on the Hotel came across and handed us some Menus and an invitation for lunch some time in the future. Well, we took him up on his offer and had a great time. Not only too catch up after Christmas, but the meals were well worth the trip. For any other Registers looking for a place to eat on a week end, we can thoroughly recommend the Williamstown Hotel. MINUTES The Minutes of 29th October 2014 were accepted as being a true record of the meeting. PRESENT: Bruce Fletcher, Des Brown, Bob Kretschmer, Malcolm Adamson, Brenton Hobbs, John Lewis, Don Evans, Bob Lynch, APOLOGIES: Ross Gogler, Ross Rasmus, Jack Richardson, Bob Hill-Ling, David Adamson, Bill Everett, 1. SA/VIC BORDER RUN November 1st-3rd 2014. Run No 40. to LOXTON. 1.Thoe members present agreed that the Run was very successful. A consolidated Report by Bruce Fletcher, Ross Rasmus & Bob Kreschmer has been sent to the CM Editor. 2.The large Banner arranged by Malcolm Adamson & displayed at the Hotel was impressive. 3.We now wait advice from the Victorians regarding date & venue for the 2015 Event. 2. JAG DAY: 1. There was general discussion re the feed-back sheets completed last meeting 2. Bob Kretschmer is compiling a dedicated booklet of the occasion as part of our SS Register 40 year Celebration Records and seeks copy of the Vehicle Detail Sheets as read out for the Special Parade. Bob has the following sheets- (in approx model sequence) Bob K, Bob H-L, Bruce F, Des B, Ross R, Graham B, Jack R, Bob H-L. Missing: Carl L, Brenton H, David A, Malcolm A. Malcolm to check with the Event Committee. 3. GENERAL BUSINESS: 1 Malcolm Adamson enquired if the recent trip to Port Lincoln might be repeated, Bruce advised that the Run was specifically part of the SS Register 40-year celebration. Noted that the Wallaroo to Cowell Ferry has closed which would make the long drive via Port Augusta less attractive for old cars. There are no plans for a repeat. 2. John Lewis suggested that a special Run for SS Register members could be on the cards early next year. 3. Bob Lynch advised that he is getting closer to gaining access to his restoration vehicles (work in progress) as he has sold some other sundry equipment previously blocking the path! 4. There was consensus that our suppers have been getting progressively lavish. Next year most of us could all do with weight reduction from more simple fare. 5. Des Brown asked if any thought had been given to having bi-monthly meetings as some other Registers do. After discussion- leave as-is. 6. Bob K collected $5 pp from those present for postage. 12
4. JDCSA: Per Malcolm Adamson. 1. The CM Editor seeks 2 Member’s Pride contributions from each Register during 2015. 2. Suggestions for Guest Speakers at General Meetings are sought 3. SA is to host the 2018 National Rally. No Concours & no Sport. 4. Ideas are sought on how to attract younger members 5. The Executive is considering 2 dates & 2 venues for 2015 Jag Day. 5. TECHNNICAL: Bob K tabled one of his new headlight glass protection covers made from 2mm polycarbonate by Menzel Plastic Traders which fit snugly over the convex glass of the LBD 166 Biflex lamps fitted to 1 ½ L models. Bob’s multiple attempts at heating the material in the oven to the prescribed technical softening point into an accurate female mould always ended with gross multiple bubbles within the matrix and/or distortion. Subsequent enquiries revealed that the material includes moisture which for moulding purposes requires a long time of pre-drying. Menzel’s Fabrication technician was called in & after several tests he came up with 4 excellent samples having involved 48 hrs. pre-drying followed by draping the pre-cut pieces over a male mould at the correct temperature. The end result is great & once fitted, the protectors are difficult to notice & enable driving with the headlights on for safety reasons rather than having removable opaque covers. Experimentation cosst money. Inspect them at the next JCCC Club Run. One car set is available from Bob at cost. Have a Paramedic nearby! 6. MARYANNE 17A.S.B.
(Adelaide Speed Boat Club) This hydroplane was built in 1955 by Dick Bassett of Globe Caravans and Ray Loffler, from plans that Ray had purchased from Italy. Ray then fitted the craft with a Jaguar XK120 engine from a vehicle that had crashed off the bluff at Victor Harbor. The engine was extensively modified with dry sumped system, high performance pistons from a 2.4 Jaguar motor, lifting the compression to 13.1. To keep the engine performing it ran on straight methanol through 6 Grandprix Amal Carburettors which were supplied by an aircraft fuel pump. The fuel pump was mounted on the rear of the 6 hydraulic pumps which removed and supplied oil to the engine lubrication system. The brand new motor fitted with its three TH8 SU carburettors running 1/8th inch jets and a mixture of Methanol, Benzol 115 and Super fuel. The coil and points Ignition system was replaced with high energy magneto system. (Approx. 1959) Ray successfully raced the Maryanne for about 10 years winning a number of South Australian titles including class and open, unlimited classifications at speeds of over 160 Kms per hour. Ray also won the Australian title is his class, as well as holding the state water speed record over the flying kilometre. Ray sold the boat in 1965.
Robert Loffler started the massive task of completely restoring the Maryanne having a number of broken structural beams. The craft was completely stripped and replacement timbers were shaped and fitted. Project started in 2013
Port River, Snowdens Beach, 28/1/64
Robert has made good progress on the restoration of this historic speed boat and the club was delighted to have the project on display at SA Jag Day in October 2014. The picture below was taken at that event. Thank you Robert for sharing this story with us via Classic Marque.—Ed.

XJ 420G Mk10 CHRISTMAS DINNER 2014 – GRACED WITH TALENT The German Club, December 5th 2014, set the scene for another sell out Dinner and show. 70 people enjoyed a night full of fun and surprises. The night started on a high note with John and Clare Evans winning this year’s “Life time Award” given by the Register. But, it was after the main course that the fun began. Viva Las Vegas. First was Elvis Presley (David Bicknell) with the backing of the Andrew Sisters, (Daphne Charman, Lurraine Davis and Heidi Goodwin) Then came Dame Joan Sutherland with Pavarotti (GRACE BAWDEN with Bob Charman). Earlier in 2014 Grace played the Lead Role in Madame Butterfly to sell out performances around Australia, but tonight she was doing a duet with Bob at the XJ Register Dinner. That’s something for her resume. An interesting fact is Bob put in a deliberate mistake so people would not think he was miming. We then had the Andrew Sisters again followed by Al Martino and Barbara Streisand (Alan & Lurraine Davis). Their performance was almost as good as Bob and Grace’s. Then it was a tribute to ‘Martin O’Dea’ performed by, ‘The Three Tenors’ (David Bicknell, Steve Arthur and Mark Goodwin) which was well received as members of Martin’s family were present.
To finish off, we had a preview of next year’s show, “Down at the Old Bull and Bush”, with Bob and Ray Bourne being joined by Merv Tucker to sing ‘Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner’ accompanied by the entire chorus. A special THANKS to all our members, and especially Grace Bawden, for once again, giving their all, to make the night a very special evening. Bob Charman

The Cat’s Giggle A husband went to the police station to report his missing wife: Husband : I’ve lost my wife, she went shopping yesterday and has still not come home. Sergeant : What is her height ? Husband : Oh, 5 something . . . Sergeant : Build? Husband : Not slim, not really fat. Sergeant : Color of eyes? Husband : Never noticed. Sergeant : Color of hair? Husband : Changes according to season. Sergeant : What was she wearing? Husband : Dress/suit/blue jeans -- I don’t remember exactly. Sergeant : Did she go in a car? Husband : yes. Sergeant : What kind of car was it? Husband : 2015 Corvette Stingray 3LT with the Z51 Performance Package, shark gray metallic paint, with the 6.2 liter V8 engine with Direct Injection generating 460 HP. 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, and GT bucket seats, and has a very thin scratch on the front left door.…at this point the husband started crying... Sergeant : Don't worry sir.......We’ll find your car. One day my housework-challenged Husband decided to wash his Sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, 'What setting do I use on the washing machine?' 'It depends,' I replied. 'What does it say on your shirt?' He yelled back, ' Brisbane Broncos !' And they say blondes are dumb... Q: What does it mean when a man is in your bed gasping for breath and calling your name? A: You did not hold the pillow down long enough.

Paddy and Murphy are working on a building site. Paddy says to Murphy "I'm gonna have the day off. I'm gonna pretend I'm mad!" He climbs up the rafters, hangs upside down and shouts "I'M A LIGHT BULB! I'M A LIGHT BULB!" Murphy watches in amazement! The Foreman shouts "Paddy you're mad, go home" So he leaves the site. Murphy starts packing his kit up to leave as well. "Where the hell are you going?" asks the Foreman. "I can't work in the dark!" says Murphy. Mick and Paddy are reading head stones at a nearby cemetery.
Mick says "Crikey! There's a bloke here who was 152!" Paddy says "What's his name?" Mick replies "Miles, from London !" While creating husbands, God promised women that good and ideal husbands would be found in all corners of the world......... ......then He made the earth round, and laughed and laughed and laughed.
Q: How do you keep your husband from reading your e-mail? A: Rename the email folder 'Instruction Manuals'

Cold Stitching—This is where you drill holes each side of the crack, thread the holes and screw in brass rods, then skim. The idea is that the rod expands more than the block metal when hot and so closes the crack.
Welding—You fill directly into the crack and then fill the
Fighting the Flaw in the 4.2 Engine Block At best the 4.2 litre Jaguar/Daimler engine block could be described as suspect and its quality further declined throughout its production. It was designed in the early 1960s to give more torque and better low to mid range performance than the 3.8 litre engine, which it genuinely did. Early examples (fitted to the last Mark Xs, the E-types and the 420s until about 1968) are easily distinguishable from the XJ6 blocks by two fewer waterways at the rear (watch your cylinder heads), three large core plugs per side and studs screwed directly into the block face. The later engines are usually prefixed 7L (all 4.2 litre engined Jaguars from 1968 to 1975) or 8L (1975 onwards) and these are the ones covered in this article. The pre-XJ6 block was said to be improved upon by the 7L block, which had a more efficient internal cooling flow. The problem was that the cylinder head studs screwed directly into the base of the block, through the waterways and, if the correct coolant is not used, then they will rot out very quickly. These studs are also twice as long as the pre-1968 blocks, allowing more stretch and therefore more variation in clamping pressure against what has been set with the torque wrench and this makes it more prone to head gasket problems. This improved block cracks, usually hairline cracks appear in the block, eventually becoming stepped ( one side becomes slightly higher than the other) and the liners drop. The 8L block, a strengthened 7L block, cracks even more than the 7L, and this may be due to an increase in thermostat temperature or to unweathered blocks being used or, possibly, a reduction in standards under British Leyland.
Why do they crack? They crack because of the very high temperature differentials created by inefficient coolant circulation. Coolant can circulate around the block only at the very front and the very back. The water pump outlet is positioned so that when the thermostat first opens, super cooled fluid is pumped mainly down the exhaust side of the block. The inlet side with its much less efficient circulation, remains closer to the thermostat temperature. This means that you could possibly have 0 degrees C fluid entering the exhaust side of the block and 88 degrees C fluid (fuel injected cars) leaving the inlet side. The cooling fluid then passes up through the cylinder head mainly from the exhaust side, passing out through the inlet manifold, again maintaining the temperature differential on the inlet side of the block. This problem – actually solved in 1981 by machining latitudinal cracks (slots) across the block and so fluid was able to circulate from the exhaust to the inlet side between the liners, equalising the temperature in this area. Unfortunately this gives you only about 118 inch for the gasket to seal on between the waterways and the combustion chamber, which is riot much thicker than a core plug. So, if the correct coolant fluid is not used it corrodes through at this point and the block is scrap. Also if the head gasket goes (which it does frequently) and it is left too long, it bums through at this point and the block is again scrap. This is now causing more problems than the original cracks.
What can be done? Many Jaguar specialists say these cracks don’t matter. Some surprisingly big names do nothing about them and all they do is skim the block face. I quote: “What can we do, we cannot throw the majority of 4.2 litre engines away and we get very few comebacks under the 12 months warranty”.

resulting hole with weld, then skim. This may work by creating a wedge of new metal over the crack (which incidentally extends over 1 inch downwards). However, talk to a metallurgist about welding large cast iron areas without preheating!
Ceramic Coating—This is where the inside of the block is coated with resin which glues the cracks together. But there is only one method which is foolproof as it not only works but it improves on the original block and solves the problem.
Top Hat Liners—This is where the old liner is machined out
and a recess is machined in the top of the block. A new liner is then pressed in. This has a lip around the top edge which fits into the recess. The tops of the liners touch each other so the head gasket now seals on the top of the liner and not the block. The extra advantages of this we that you can return to a standard bore (standard pistons tend to be cheaper) or the original pistons (if in good condition) can be reused. It also means that if required for a performance rebuild, the block can be bored out to 4.5 litres. The procedure when preparing the block is as follows: 1. The block should be perfect without cracks and corrosion (slotted blocks) 2. The fact that the block is not cracked at the point you rebuild it does not mean it has not started to crack. 3. If there is any bowing then the block will require the crank carrier to be line bored. 4. Send for boring and honing. 5. Remove all core plugs and the rear engine plate. Then spend 20 minutes with a pressure washer to remove sediment and rust from inside the block. Chemical cleaning can stain bearing faces, bores, etc. 6. Remove all the oil gallery plugs (not forgetting the small conical gauze fitter behind the hydraulic chain tensioner), then pressure wash, preferably with detergent, all the oilways. 7. Replace all the long studs, 8. While being replaced, the studs will rum 16 to 17 turns into the block, allowing for the domed cylinder head nut to tighten onto the head and not torque up a few threads above the spacer. Four studs are slightly longer than the others; this is for the engine lifting brackets. The main contributing factor causing blocks to crack is due to the thermostat. When a car boils up you are told to let the engine coal down before topping up with coolant and that this stops the thermal shock which causes cracking. An 88 degrees C thermostat allows the engine to reach 12 degrees C less than boiling point before opening wide to allow the block to be swamped from one end by super cooled fluid from the radiator. In other words, your engine receives a thermal shock every time the thermostat opens. To reduce this you can remove the small back flow tag and drill another hole the same size in the thermostat, allowing fluid to pass through the system and so help equalise the temperature of arguing and outgoing fluid. The engine will take three to four minutes longer to reach operating temperature but it helps stop the head gasket blowing. Do not leave the thermostat out completely since the fluid will only circulate around the front of the engine mid this causes hot spots. Make sure you use the correct thermostat on early pre-XJ6 engines as many of the early 3.8 litre ones with cracks have been fitted with the smaller modem thermostat. Carburetted cars run well with 75 degrees C thermostats drilled as above; fuel injected cars need an 88 degree C thermostat drilled to cancel out the heat. Cracks in the block may not always be apparent unless you have good eyesight and are specifically looking for them, so use crack test fluid. A non-Jaguar specialist would not necessarily notice them because they may not know to look for them. - (From “Jaguar Enthusiast” magazine)
