Club Torque PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to 2016. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. I am sitting here on the banks of the beautiful River Murray in Renmark thinking about the events of the year ahead. I am looking forward to seeing plenty of Jaguars on display at All British Day on 14th February. If you haven’t booked you can still attend as a spectator as there will be over 800 vehicles on display. I have also included a photo of the People’s Choice 2015 Winner. Peter Leaf-Milham received the award for his Series 3 V12 E Type at the E F & GT Xmas meeting.

Jaguar Drivers Club of SA Minutes of general meeting held Tuesday December 1st 2015 at Police Club (downstairs). President Di Adamson opened the meeting at approximately 7.50pm Present: approx. 110 members Visitors: Richard Blanden (Sporting Car Club), Bob Magor (bush poet) Business: Di presented the following: 1. Don & Margaret Evans with their 20 year membership certificates. 2. Life membership to Onslow & Wendy Billinghurst. Onsl responded thanking the club for the honour. 3. SA Jag Day People’s Choice awards were presented to the runner up Ray & Barb Offe (XJS), and winner to Peter Leif-Milan (E Type) (accepted on his behalf by Alan Baker). Richard Blanden (Sporting Car Club) then presented the Jaguar Drivers Club of SA with the Best Club Display Award from the recent Adelaide Motorsport Festival. President Di responded thanking the Sporting Car Club and vowing to have an even better display next year. Club calendars were then distributed to members present

If you are considering attending the 2016 National Rally in Queensland on April the 15th to the 18th (plus post rally tour). Please visit http://www.jaguarnationalrally2016.org.au. We have a group of vehicles travelling over and most staying for the post rally tour. On a very sad note, I was advised of the passing of Don Evans. Don was a Club Vehicle Inspector for many years, a regular contributor to both the SS Register and the Club in general receiving the President’s Award in 2014. Don and Margaret received their 20 year certificates in 2015. Even with failing health he attended the SS Register barbecue on the 17th of January and appeared quite bright. Don always offered advice but more importantly I always remember him with a bright cheeky smile. All members are invited to his funeral on the 28th of January at 2.30pm. Our thoughts and prayers are with Margaret and their family at this very difficult time. Di Adamson

Thanks to the XK Mk789 register for hosting tonight’s meeting. Guest presenter – Bob Magor Onslow Billinghurst introduced Bob as a bush poet who had won many national and international awards. Bob gave an outline of his background in dairy farming in the Myponga area and proceeded to entertain the audience with stories, jokes and the recital of his poetry. Topics covered in his poetry included shopping, vegetarians, weddings, shearing, Grandma’s washing machine, caravans, Velcro and first dates. Bob had books and CDs available for purchase and wished everyone all the best for Christmas. Onslow thanked Bob for his outstanding performance. Di closed the meeting by thanking everyone for their attendance and inviting people to join in the supper.

Preliminary Notice A Club run to Cobdogla and the Humphrey Pump is being planned for weekend of 21st May 2016. The organisers of this run are Ian & Cheryl Pascoe. Get the date in your diary now. Watch this space for more detail.

VALE—Don Evans It is with a very heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of Club Member Don Evans. Don was a vehicle inspector for our club for many years, was awarded the President’s Trophy and both he and Margaret received their 20 year certificates at the Christmas Meeting. Our thoughts are with Margaret and his family at this time. He will be very sadly missed by all who knew him. Don’s first involvement with motor sport was with the Sporting Car Club in Broken Hill in the 1950s.The club operated on the Hill Climb circuit on the outskirts of Broken Hill, where he was a regular and successful competitor with cars he built and modified himself. The club eventually closed, being unable to meet the government safety regulations. Don transferred his attention to the newly developing water sports, based at Copi Hollow, which is part of the Menindee Lakes Water Scheme. His interest in fibre glass resulted in his first ski and race boat," Cheetah 1". The Evans family enjoyed many weekends at Copi Hollow which was establishing camping facilities, a caravan park and a boat ramp. "Cheetah 1" was replaced with a new fibre glass boat of Evans manufacture "Cheetah 2", this time with the emphasis on racing. "Cheetah 2" appeared to have unlimited power but wayward stability. At speed, the boat was in the air as much as it was in the water. Visitors to the lake, who accepted Don's invitation of a demonstration run, came back visibly shaken and declining a second experience. However nothing deterred Don and "Cheetah 2" raced with considerable success locally and interstate. Don was always a fierce competitor but when the race was over was

5

willing to help other competitors with advice and expertise. At this time Don operated a service station in Broken Hill at 90 Bromide Street. It was the centre of boat building and maintenance in Broken Hill. Don moved to Adelaide and into the transport industry and developed a large and specialised transport business in partnership with his father delivering freight as far afield as Western Australia and the Northern Territory, often to many sites where other operators were not keen to travel, which meant being away for weeks at a time. During this time Don's interest in classic cars came to the fore and he eventually left the transport industry to concentrate on his new interest. This resulted in the major restoration of a Mark 1V drop head Jaguar, a bigger and better cat than the Cheetahs. This car went on to win major awards wherever it was shown. Don's commitment to mechanical perfection was recognised and there was a steady stream of cars coming to his workshop for repairs and improvements. Don and Margaret’s attendance at club runs and interstate rallies was always welcomed. Don had been to most destinations before, probably in a truck and if a car gave trouble, Don would know how to fix it! Don's advice and mentoring on all matters Jaguar was sought and appreciated by all with an interest in Jaguars and it was always of a practical nature. Maybe the workshop manual was technically right, but there was always a better way, "Don's Way!" Our thanks to John Caskey for the photos and the brief pen sketch of Don’s automotive history.— Ed.

Jaguar Returns to Racing  Jaguar Land Rover confirms its electric future with entry for Jaguar into the innovative FIA Formula E Championship

 Formula E to provide a real world performance test bed for future Jaguar Land Rover technology

 Jaguar Land Rover, the UK's leading investor in

research and development , strengthens its commitment to British engineering by extending development of electrification technology into the racing environment

 Jaguar Land Rover engineers will work directly with

Jaguar's race team to push the boundaries of electrification technology (Mahwah, NJ) - December 15, 2015 - Jaguar today announced its return to global motorsport. In the autumn of 2016, Jaguar will enter the third season of the exciting FIA Formula E Championship as a manufacturer with its own team. FIA Formula E is the world's first global single-seater championship for electric powered cars. FIA Formula E offers a unique opportunity for Jaguar Land Rover to further the development of future EV powertrain including motor and battery technology. Nick Rogers, Group Engineering Director for Jaguar Land Rover, said,"I am proud to announce Jaguar's return to racing with an entry into the innovative FIA Formula E championship. Electric vehicles will absolutely play a role in Jaguar Land Rover's future product portfolio and Formula E will give us a unique opportunity to further our development of electrification technologies. The Championship will enable us to engineer and test our advanced technologies under extreme performance conditions.

6

It is my belief that over the next five years we will see more changes in the automotive world than in the last three decades. The future is about being more connected and more sustainable; electrification and lightweight technologies are becoming more important than ever as urbanisation continues to increase. Formula E has recognised and reacted to these trends and the championship's exciting and pioneering approach is the perfect fit for our brand." Jaguar Land Rover employs over 8,000 engineers and is the UK's largest investor in research and development across any business sector. Jaguar's Formula E team will be able to draw upon this industry leading resource with Jaguar Land Rover engineers working closely with the race operations team. Those engineers will not only be able to apply their knowledge within the race team environment but crucially use the experience to extract data and push the boundaries of electric technology in a performance environment. Williams Advanced Engineering will be Technical Partner to the Jaguar Formula E Team and provide extensive motorsport knowledge, combined with high performance EV Systems experience and success. Jaguar Land Rover has a long term relationship with Williams, who partnered with Jaguar on the development of the Jaguar C-X75 plug-in hybrid concept car. The team entry has been granted by Formula E and approved by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). Alejandro Agag, Chief Executive Officer for Formula E, said,"We are delighted to welcome Jaguar into Formula E. Jaguar is a brand with a rich sporting heritage and the fact that it is returning to global motorsport with Formula E is a

The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

huge endorsement of the championship and its ability to influence the development of electric cars. Jaguar brings with it a passionate fan base that will drive the popularity of the championship across the world and once again shows that Formula E is the future of motorsport." Jean Todt, President of the FIA said, "The FIA is pleased to welcome Jaguar as a new manufacturer to enter the FIA Formula E Championship. We built this series to offer an alternative competition for manufacturers to step into the sport and develop road-relevant electric technologies. The choice of Jaguar to come back to motor racing with Formula E is a proof of success. As it forges a path forward for the future of the electric car, Formula E managed to attract one of the most prestigious and historical brand across the automotive industry. I wish them success ahead of their arrival in 2016/2017".

James Barclay, Jaguar Team Director, said,"We looked in detail at alternative ways of returning to motorsport. This was such an important decision for Jaguar and we wanted to get it right. With our future EV plans, Formula E was the obvious choice and we believe that the benefits are enormous. The FIA and the promoter have exciting plans for the future of the championship and we are proud to be one of the first vehicle manufacturers to commit to the series with our own team. We have a lot of work to do ahead of the first race but it is a challenge we relish. We hope that we can welcome a new generation of fans to Jaguar through this exciting program."

Jaguar Classifieds FOR SALE --- 1976 Jaguar XJS V12 manual This original factory manual car was the 77th out of 352 early RHD V12 coupes. The JDHT certificate states the car was built on the 21st April 1976 ( the Queen's 50th birthday ) and delivered new to Henley's Limited in Bournemouth , England. The original colour was Signal Red and the interior was Black Leather trim . The car came to Australia fairly early in its life . I purchased it in June 2002 from a friend ( who sold for serious health reasons ) soon after a "back to bare metal " restoration had been mostly completed . The engine , brakes , driveline and rear end had been fully overhauled to better than new and a fresh acrylic paint job applied . This has never been polished and is now very well cured ! The interior trim , bumpers and other bits and pieces came with the car as well as many spare parts ( bonnet , boot , lhs door and mudguards from a donor car ) . This car was to be a " lightweight " track day special and the air conditioning is removed .The fuel system was to be high octane LPG , to which end the distributor has been recalibrated and an 80 litre gas tank installed in the boot in place of the original tank. An extra roller bearing is installed at the distributor base for longevity and high revs. ( anything in excess of 6,500 rpms ) Due to work and family commitments since then , the car has remained stored ( off the ground and covered in my dry garage ) since 2002 . My wife and I are now retiring and downsizing so there is no room for this very interesting piece of Jaguar history. There are many more details and a multitude of parts ( choice of wheels ) which can go with the car . The hard work is probably about 80 % done and this represents a great opportunity for someone who appreciates the collectability of this quite rare Jaguar ( especially as I expect very few would have survived ) .The value of the restored original engine and gearbox alone is significant . An ideal restoration project just waiting for the keen XJS enthusiast to complete .

There are several extras to go with the car , in particular a set of later model fibereglass bumpers from GWS . These are new and never used ; originally $1300 . Offers considered . Contact : Paul

Maryanne A Story about a Boat, two or more engines and a family of Jaguars

Photo taken approximately 1964

It was early 1954 and a plan was launched to build a very fast competitive boat, but it took years of effort and testing to obtain success .The ‘’Maryanne ‘’ named after Ray Loffler’s youngest daughter who born on the same year the boat was first ready for the water, in late 1954. A wooden Hull had to be built, it was to be a Hydroplane, a rare style of boat. A huge task as very few had ever been built in South Australia before 1954 but plans from Italy were obtained, still in the family today. The hull was built by Globe Products a small Adelaide Company who was at the time building wooden Caravans. A very powerful engine was needed and where in the mid1950s would one obtain such an engine. The answer was a Jaguar XK120, as these engines were still very new a search for a damaged or Insurance right off leads to a car that was crashed into the ocean from the bluff at Victor Harbor. With the engine removed the rest of the car was stored in a shed for years before it was later restored using a MK 7 engine and it still exists, Chassis No 660197 Engine No W1870-7. Before the XK engine was fitted to the Maryanne it was fully balanced and highly modified with 6 Grand Prix Carburettor's, an Aluminium Flywheel, reground cams, 6 very short straight out exhausts, dual points, dual coil ignition, pistons for a 2.4 engine which is the same bore size but with a much higher crown giving a compression of about 13:1 running on Methanol. The head was drilled to inject oil onto the Cam lobes as this was before the days of drilled Cams. So the Engine could be as low as possible in the boat the Sump was reduced in depth and a dry sump system was adapted utilising five belt driven aircraft oil pumps, two to supply the oil to the Engine and three to scavenge the oil back out via a water cooler to a tank mounted behind the driver. A 6 volt starter motor running on 12 volt was required to start the engine. Ray spent hundreds of hours developing the boat including a special steel two blade propeller driven from the front of the engine. This was raced with some success but it was hard to start from cold. The ignition was unreliable and the fuel supply was inadequate with its two electric SU fuel pumps, as two mile to the gallon was the average and this limited the engine RPM. The cold starting was overcome by mixing a cocktail of fuels, 16

The early inject oil system, 6 Grand Prix Carburettor's and Aluminium flywheel two parts of Methanol, one part, Benzol and one part Super petrol it was found these three ingredients would stay mixed for a short time however the carburettors and fuel system needed to be drained and cleaned after each event.

In Late 1959 a new XK 150S Engine was bought from England for the Maryanne, Engine No VS2167-8. This was fitted complete with all the modifications apart from retaining the triple SU carburation and the compression was reduced to 10:1 by fitting special solid skirt pistons, in this configuration the engine was very reliable and would run to 7000 RPM,

Ray Loffler’s back yard, approximately 1964 The ignition problems were solved with the fitment of a Lucas BN146 Magneto and the fuel supply was increased by installing an aircraft fuel pump mounted on the rear of the belt driven oil pumps. After many high stressed runs the original XK120 block eventually cracked along the bottom of the water jacket and a new one was bought from Dominion Motors in Adelaide on 17-7-1959, part no C4820 for eighty five pounds. This new block only lasted one season before a conrod broke and punching a hole out the side, In 1965 this block was welded up using a piece of casting from the cracked block, detuned and fitted into XK 120 chassis No 660094 (The Fire Chiefs first response vehicle) when the car was restored .

Snowdens Beach, Port Adelaide Approximately 1964 With the new engine the boat was running very well by early 1960, until on one of its test runs at over 90 mph it hit something in the water, believed to be a seal. This flipped the boat end for end, luckily Ray suffered only a few cuts and bruises, and the boat sunk to the bottom of the Port River for three days, the lack of visibility under water made it a long task to recover the Maryanne. The Hull was badly damaged with all the decking destroyed, and the engine with all the electrics were full with salt water. The boat was fully rebuilt in three months and continued to race in South Australia and interstate very successfully holding many South Australian records and one Australian record achieving a top speed of 105 mph and a two way South Australian record of 98 mph. In 1964 whilst racing in the Inland Speedboat Championship's held in Copi Hollow a small town in outback New South Wales the boat hit a large wash and damaged the hull badly, The hull without the Engine was then sold to a chap in Mannum South Australia who was to rebuild the boat with another Jaguar Engine however he passed away before finishing the project and the hull was left in the weather for 25 years.

Burra, Fire appliance weekend, approximately 2011 This is the car bought new by the South Australian Fire Brigade as a turn out vehicle and was featured in front of the Adelaide fire station for the Queen's visit in 1954, the car has run in two classic Adelaide events, National trust exhibits for fire appliances, many Jaguar Club outings all around Australia and is still in the Loffler family after 51 years. 17 The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

The Maryanne was not a tiny unit. She was 17 feet long and quite lively to drive, with Ray behind the wheel it achieved a number of awards and records. A SMALL SECTION OF TROPHY’S AND RECORDS WON BY THE MARYANNE

Robert Loffler, repairing the Hull, 2012 In about 1990 the derelict hull of the Maryanne was bought back by the original family and reunited with its XK150s engine which had been still retained by the family since 1960. The restoration of the boat was only started in 2011 by Robert Loffler, Ray’s son. The hull was completely striped down to the main frame and painstakingly brought back to its former glory including matching the original colours and even to having the sign work done by hand. With the engine completely overhauled, and a new trailer built in September 2015 the Maryanne was again ready to hit the water for the first time in 50 years.

Fourth generation Loffler checking out the cars 2015

Ray Loffler the owner and Driver of the Maryanne also was a Jaguar man from the 1950s owning many XK120’S including chassis No 660238, 660094, 660110, 660197, 660221, 660560, 660887, and 660794. Unfortunately Ray passed away at 91 in 2010 before the restoration was completed, however the legacy lives on throughout his family including fourth generations with Jaguars and the Maryanne a big part. Since the boat has been completed it has had a number of runs and displays with Ray’s and Robert’s family and friends keen to help out as support crew and tracking down

and recording history. A lot of interest has been shown whenever the boat appears in public, it’s always great to meet and chat with people that remember seeing the Maryanne in its hay days. We have just found out recently, that The Maryanne has been listed in the Australian register of historic vessels, by the Australian National Maritime Museum. The Loffler family are very proud of their Grandfather and father’s achievements.

Member’s Pride It was a usual Saturday morning for us. Me reading the Travel pages, John studying the Car pages, and neither of us showing much interest in the other's pursuits. I'm just wondering, for the hundredth time, how I can get him to agree to go on a cruise, when he suddenly announces that he has always fancied a Jaguar (I already knew that) and the model he thinks he would like is advertised in today's paper. Well, I thought, what's the harm in looking? Good, he says, it's just around the corner, come on! As we are driving to the car yard I ask all the important technical questions. What colour do you want? It's got to be red. You're not going to buy the first one we look at are you? Of course not. Good, parameters established. We arrived at the car yard but no Jaguar to be seen. Good, I think, it's gone already, now, about that cruise ... The salesman appeared. The Jag, he said, it's just arrived in and hasn't been detailed yet. It 's round the back, l'll be with you in a minute. So we walked around the back and there she was, gleaming in the sun, a beautiful, unmarked 1997 X300. And what colour was it? Carnival red. I took one look at John's face and recognised love at first sight. I remembered when he had looked at me like that. Obviously a man with taste, my husband. We took it for a drive, and I said that we couldn't buy it straight away. So we went home. Next day we returned, paid the money, and took it home. It took me another seven years before I convinced John to go on a cruise, but in the meantime we joined the Jag Club and have made lasting friendships and built up many memories. Lesley Clarke

COLD PAWS As mentioned towards the end of chapter 2, I had been told of an XJ6, which was described as a Series 1 ½ so I went to have a look. The twins were growing & the Mark 2 was becoming a bit small for our trips to the snow. Strangely enough this car was garaged only 200 meters from where we lived & it was owned by the son of a man called Bob Reed, who at that time operated a business called Reed & Walker & it was he who had machined the 2.4 engine so many years before.

The car was a quite nice 4.2 Series 1, Sable in colour ( chocolate brown) but it had been reversed into in a shopping centre carpark in country Victoria & the front was badly damaged. The car was left there for repairs, but the crash repair business received a complete set of front panels for a Series 2, so the car actually looked like a Short Wheelbase Series 2 although it had that lovely S1 interior. We took it to the snow in 1982 (the lowest snowfall season on record) so we had to drive all the way to Charlottes Pass to find skiable snow. The car was so luxurious after the Mark 2, (please don’t get upset Mark 2 owners as back then our Jags just evolved as our family needs dictated) but the nonventilated front disc brakes still overheated on the two long descents on the Alpine Way, but we felt a bit better when we came across an Oldsmobile Toronado that actually had its drum brakes on fire just a short distance up the road. The only interesting thing was that the ski racks had a lot more wind noise than on the Mark 2. And so this year we had an almost uneventful trip & I thought that our dramatic Jaguar holidays were over, but I didn’t know then that I was being lured into a false sense of security & the Jaguar demons were waiting to teach me a lesson. And so, the following year we embarked upon our pilgrimage again & it wasn’t long before the first gremlin showed itself, actually something that I never experienced again. We normally leave quite early so it was still dark when we hit the freeway & as I was driving I was trying to work out why there was a dense fog behind the car but quite clear ahead, it didn’t take long to realise that we were making the fog. A white smoke was streaming out of the rear, a quick glance at the gauges said that all was well so we stopped (very quickly), I must say that I have never seen 4 people exit a car so fast. 22

By Steve and Val Weeks

Part 3 —

The XJ Years

So there we were, 5am in the morning with lots of “popping” sounds coming from underneath the car & then it just went quite, I restarted the car & it ran like a dream, oil & water was ok, no smoke – nothing. At the time it was a great mystery but I was later told that the car had suffered an exhaust fire, but for the rest of that holiday I always had one eye on the rear vision mirror. We only had this car for a few years , because the twins kept growing & as they got older the luggage requirements grew, we now had to pack important things like make up bags, portable radios, boxes of cassette tapes (that’s how long ago it was) for when they got bored. And so when a club member advertised that his white Series 2 Long wheelbase XJ6 was for sale, we bought it. Now we were in the land of luxury, air conditioning, electric windows & enough rear leg room to prevent the cries of “Dad my legs are cramping up” & we now had a car that for the first time could go through the Alpine Way without the brakes overheating – sheer joy. We did many journeys to both National Rallies & the annual ski trip in this car & as each car got newer, the problems seemed to be less, but they were still there – waiting as only a Jaguar can do. One such incident was on a trip to the Snowy's & we were traveling from Bendigo across to Violet Town, we naturally had the ski racks on & now we were carrying 4 pairs of the new “parabolic” skis (that were a lot wider). I noticed a strange wind noise every time we went over some undulations so I asked my son to look for the cause. I wasn’t long before he started screaming “stop the car, stop the car the roofs falling off” this of course necessitated another crash stop (similar to the exhaust fire incident) with once again the four of us standing on the side of the road awaiting some catastrophe, but everything looked normal , except for the top of the rear window being a few inches away from the body. To keep this story short, what I found was that if the rear window seal had become hardened & cracked, the rear window would move away from the body when the car was flexing, this added with the updraft effect of the skis created a very dramatic effect. So when we arrived in Wangaratta I purchased large quantities of black silicone & this was liberally applied to the rear window (once back in position), which seemed to fix the problem.

The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

Our only other mishap on this trip was have two tyres punctured just outside of Corryong, so we limped in & although it was a Sunday the local tractor agency opened up for us & they had some new Commodore tyres, although 65 profile, they got us by, the only real problem here was the owners cattle dog that insisted on trying to chew my ankle off. A lasting memory of the white series 2 was when some friends of ours in Adelaide asked if they could join us on the trip & they drove a new Ford LTD, We were travelling between Corryong & Khancoban driving through some rather bumpy corners at speed when my son said “Wayne’s sideways, now he’s of the road” so naturally I stopped expecting him to have suffered a puncture. His words were “I will never follow a Jag again; your car just floated through the bends, the LTD just could not keep up”. The following year they came with us again but in a series 3 Sovereign & they still drive a jag to this day! This car served us so well, but my son was in his final year of school so I arranged with Geoff Mockford, who was the Service Manager at Solitaire to give him a week’s work experience. When I picked my son up on his final day Geoff said “look what’s just come in” & there was a beautiful red with black vinyl roof, Series 2 V12, with very few k’s on it. So we now had a V12 & of course it had to go to the snow with us, this was the first time I never kept a log of petrol usage, because after the first day I couldn’t bear to calculate the mileage. Two memorable incidents with this car, the first one being on the Alpine Way & as we neared Jindabyne, despite it being below freezing outside, I noticed the temperature gauge rising. An inspection showed that the front wheel had thrown a stone through the radiator. No problem here, I’ll just take the radiator out & get it fixed-WRONG. Because all drainage water in Jindabyne goes into the lake no service stations are permitted to repair cooling systems, the nearest place was in Cooma. I pleaded with the Chalet owners & they let me use the open garage, as you know no easy feat, remove the radiator, the air conditioning & then you could get the radiator out, slight problem was that we had a blizzard for two days & so each morning I had to use a shovel to get to the car & then borrow a Land cruiser to get the radiator to Cooma & back. Well a few days skiing lost but we got the car back onto the road, the blizzard was

23

still going & the next day I had my first real life lesson of how to drive in the snow. We had a great days skiing at Perisher & the weather had really gotten bad but there were no “fit snow chains now” signs so I decided to drive back slowly without them as did a few hundred other skiers. Those who know the area will know that there is a mountain pass called Daniers Gap, it’s about 1800 meters high & it’s a crest of a windswept hill. The traffic came to a stop about 500 metres from the top & it took about 30 minutes to crawl up to the crest & as we drove over (about 5 kph) we saw what looked like a demolition derby, there were cars everywhere, over the edge, impaled into each other, buses on their side & a man came running over yelling “black ice” stop your car. No problems lets apply the brakes, nothing the car just started going faster with no steering & as I looked up I was heading straight for a Mercedes (stranded) & the woman in the driver’s seat was getting ready to abandon the car, when my Mark 2 days came back to me. So reverse gear & handbrake on & like a battleship the nose slowly started to turn & we missed the Merc by cm then we had to navigate down for another kilometre before we could stop. I still have dreams about that experience, but we did several more trips in the V12 before a XJ40 came along. I would love to tell you some horror stories about this car, but compared to the others it was so boring, nothing ever went wrong; it gave great mileage & saw out our years of travelling to the snow in Jaguars. We still go to the Snowy’s every year (even this year the snowfalls were so heavy that we had to wait for a snowplough to clear the road) but with these few articles I have tried to document not just some moments that we experienced on these journeys, but also to remember the wonderful jags that we used as the family grew up. We now have an XK150 FHC & I am saying to Val, “why don’t we get back to those great days of the Mark 2 & take the 150 to the snow” it would be a great adventure, she’s a little apprehensive, but it would be fun, diner at the Pickled Parrot Restaurant in Khancoban, visiting the Murry 1 Power Station & shovels & snow chains if there’s a lot of snow. ANYONE INTERESTED?
