Club Torque
Winter has quickly set in and heading out for a drive in your Jaguar is only a consideration if it has a heater. Good windscreen wipers and no leaks are also rather critical. We are continuing to grow our club with 5 new applications for membership in the past month. I would like to thank Daphne and Kathy for all the work they have done over the last 8 weeks processing our Membership Renewals and Logbooks. If you have not completed all requirements for Historic Registration Renewal your vehicle will be unregistered as of 30th June. Roger was reading one of the books from our Club Library “E Type – 50 years of a Design Icon” the other night and read me a couple of interesting points. One article made you think a little bit more than the others. It read:
It’s like that woman you used to love. The one you’d never waste another minute on. You can avoid her for months, but one night she calls and you’d crawl naked across three hundred yards of flaming gasoline and broken bottles to get her. It’s a Jaguar. It reeks of purest automotive erotica. It was an E Type Review from Car and Driver in June 1965. Don’t forget to book your tickets for our Annual Presentation Dinner which is being held at Glenelg Golf Club on 25th July. Please contact either Ros Holland, Marg Thomas or Daphne Charman to buy your ticket. . Roger and I will not be at the July General meeting as we will be travelling around the Rutherglen area. It will be a busy month for us as we also have a camping trip to Alice Springs and Ayers Rock. (Obviously not taking the JAG) Hope to see you at the Dinner on the 25th, it should be a great night. XJ 420G Mk10 Register are heading to St Cecilia’s in Peterborough in August for a Murder Mystery to solve.
Murder at Ashford Manor – the Dastardly Death of Sir Donald Episode 1 – The Murder Dear Friends and Motoring Enthusiasts I would like to share with you the events of last Wednesday night and to ask your collective minds to help solve the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Sir Donald of Ashford Manor. The Master had just returned unexpectedly that afternoon from a delightful motoring trip to Bordeaux in France in his newly acquired Jaguar motor saloon. He was looking
forward to his favourite meal of roast Highland Pheasant, prepared to his liking by the cook, Mrs McGinty, a somewhat surly and bad tempered woman on her best day. She was not at all amused as she had to hurriedly send her son Dougal out to shoot a pheasant and crank up the ovens. Later that afternoon Charmers served tea to Sir Donald in the drawing room and was aware of a very animated and volatile conversation between Sir Donald and Mikos the Master Mechanic, curiously known as Evan, over unpaid bills. Sir Donald argued constantly with Mikos about the work undertaken and refused to pay his bills. Mikos, not accustomed to this treatment was so furious he told Sir Donald exactly what he thought of him and would do him harm should these bills remain unpaid and then harped on and on about the freight for the parts on Sir Donald’s Motor. In a rage Sir Donald informed Mikos the Master Mechanic, curiously known as Evan that it would be a cold day in hell before he paid these outrageous bills and offered to place them in certain parts of his anatomy where the sun rarely shone and proceeded to slammed down the phone, breaking the receiver and rendering the phone out of action. That Evening after partaking of the pheasant and several liberal glasses of his recent and newly purchased fine Bordeaux wine courtesy of a splendid motoring adventure the Master retired to his study as was his custom, but not before mentioning to Charmers that he thought the pheasant was not up to Mrs McGinty’s usual standard, and that she may not have let the bird hang sufficiently knowing full well this would be related back to Mrs McGinty a woman of somewhat surly and bad tempered disposition on her best day. The Master closed the study doors to attend to managing the affairs of the considerable Estate, owned by his much younger wife, the very beautiful Lady Katherine 5
As the great clock chimed 10 ‘clock, Chalmers the head Butler and Sir Donald’s personal valet was conducting his final rounds of the Manor paying particular attention to the security of doors and windows. There had been considerable tension and discord amongst the members of the household in recent times. As he shuffled up the great hallway encumbered by his old war wound, being a piece of remnant shrapnel in his right buttock from his service to King and country in the Boer War, he noticed a glimmer of light coming from under the study door. Chalmers respectfully knocked on the great oak door. There being no response he tried the door handle, discovering it to be locked. He thought this unusual. Shuffling back to the Butler’s pantry to retrieve the study key he discovered to his consternation that it was missing from its hook. Chalmers instead retrieved the key to the dining room doors adjoining the study and shuffled back along the great hallway. Upon entry to the study he was relieved to see the Master stretched out in his favourite chair holding a half empty glass of Bordeaux. So as not to disturb the Master Chalmers crept quietly up to retrieve the glass from his Masters hand. However he was immediately horrified to discover a large carving knife protruding from his Master’s chest, impaling an unpaid invoice from Mikos the Master Mechanic, curiously known as Evan. But more disturbing was the twisted grimace distorting the Master’s face with a look of horror and disbelief. Chalmers immediately realised that the Master was deceased, and indeed had been for some time as our old friend rigor mortis had done its job. Chalmers shuffled back up the great hallway to the Butler’s Pantry and vigorously rang on the newly installed electric bell system for young Bignall, the somewhat portly but enthusiastic Boot Boy, After clear instructions Charmers dispatched Bignall on foot as a result of the only phone in the manor was rendered useless thanks to this afternoons heated exchange between Mikos the Master Mechanic known locally as Evan and Sir Donald……Bignall made haste as best he could to the Constabulary with a clear message to come immediately to Ashford Manor. A Murder had been committed. Chief Inspector Hercules Bullock summoned the members of the household to the library the following morning to investigate the mysterious and dastardly death of Sir Donald. To be continued……

Multivalve Register Run to Mannum
6
Our new member Rolland and Ellie Donders organised a delightful run with the destination to their home town of Mannum. They had organised a varying and interesting itinerary and great eateries for the day. The Donders are very enthusiastic and excellent promoters for their town and were very proud to present the features that make Mannum a great town to visit or live. The town has a rich original settlement history with now a developing modern approach as a town attracting new housing ranging for young families to retirement development. Rolland has personal access to the very private (and old) "Budarick's Museum" which includes an amazing stock of stationary engines, most in working order, and Rolland kindly primed a few big ones into action for our benefit. There were ample attractions of our world gone by in another two large display sheds. It is sad to report though that through death and aged infirmity that the Museum has deteriorated a little and has been off limits to the general public for a long time. It is now "for sale as a walk in and takeover" lot and whether a buyer can be found, only time will tell. The run began on a fresh (coldish) morning with approximately 13 or so fine Jaguars starting out with a delicious morning coffee/tea scone stop at the iconic Gumeracha Big Rocking Horse. If anyone is interested this is a very good future stop for any runs through the hills. Dutifully refreshed we headed to the Budarick Museum just out of the town of Mannum. This entertained us for about an hour or so and then we drove to the Mannum lookout for the "official" photo shoot and great views of the River Murray and surrounding area. From there we were catered for with a fine food menu at the Mannum Hotel Restaurant where four more cars and members arrived ending the day with approximately 35 Members participating. We ate well and chatted for ages and it was pleasing to have Ron (and Claire) Palmer attend at this pointeven though Ron was still rather fragile following his heart surgery. Quite a few then headed directly for home with the remaining members treated to viewing and narration of the new Mannum Marina from the unofficial Marina lookout. The final 4 cars were escorted out of Mannum by Rolland via Monarto and from there we broke up and headed for our various routes to home. What a great day with an excellent spread of models from Peter Clarkes brand new XK-RRRRRRRRRRR through to the 60's Mk 2. Thank you to the Donders for a great itinerary and run organisation. Report and photos by Ray Offe.

Compact members know how to lunch in style!
The Compact meeting this month was at Richard & Anik Shipman’s fantastic property in Hahndorf where 24 members enjoyed a sumptuous lunch of home-grown beef plus, Kangaroo, Venison & Chicken with spacious views over the rolling hills North of Hahndorf. Richard was able to show members his latest acquisitions of a 1960 Mark 1 and a 1964 Mark 2 in original condition. The Mark 1 has too much rust to make it a viable restoration but the individual parts will be worth saving. The Mark 2 has not been driven for 20 years (which has nothing to do with it having no engine or gearbox) and after a few weeks by Richard of meticulous polishing has produced a stunning dark blue duco. The inside is in fantastic condition and in total has the hallmarks of a really great Mark 2. Just shows what can be found in the “boon docks” outside of Adelaide Phil Prior and Andrew Costi presented their superb XJC’s which will participate in the upcoming XJC muster in Echuca where they are trying to beat the English muster of 37 cars. Richard also showed members his E-Type work in progress whilst various Historic and 3-yearly inspections were carried out Dessert was then displayed which certainly challenged what the Ritz could produce. Needless to say very little was left over. Whilst the register only meets every 2-months the meetings are invariably special and everyone looks forward to the next one. Tim White

Our Patron Writes Would I buy another Jag? It’s nearly three years since I bought my XF 2.2 litre 4 cylinder turbocharged diesel, and since that time many people have asked me my opinion about the car. Would I buy another Jag? The answer is, sadly, only maybe. I have spent most of my life associated with the car industry, so perhaps I’m a more unsparing critic than the average buyer, but the truth is that the XF is like the curate’s egg – only good in parts. To be fair my attitude has been influenced by three issues: My previous car was a Holden Calais V The price of the XF was reduced by $10,000 just one week after I bought it – a fact that still rankles. My wife took delivery of a VW Golf Mark VII shortly after I acquired the XF. I would argue that the Calais and the XF have many similarities: They are both beautifully styled cars They are both independent rear suspension/rear-drive cars, so their ride and handling are comparable. Both are a bit too firm for my taste, especially their small bump harshness. My Calais offered numerous features not available on the XF, ranging from provision for bottles in the front door pockets (very important) to split rear seat squabs. Bear in mind that my Calais was delivered in 2006 and the latest model Calais V offers incomparably more features than my XF. I know that I’m being “picky” but surely you should expect at least the same features as a Calais in a car costing nearly twice as much! Which brings me to my wife’s Golf. It really upsets me that her Golf offers many features not available on the XF, from cornering lights to a marvellous infotainment system that leaves the XF in the shade. In fact

the XF’s infotainment system is one of the worst features of the car. Let’s hope the infotainment system in the new XF is a vast improvement – it needs to be! It also upset that I’m obliged to replace the rear brake linings after less than 30,000 km. The brake linings on the Calais were predicted to last for 120,000km as I’m no hotrodder, so why are the XF’s linings so soft? I may be even more upset when I find out how much it’s going to cost! By this time no doubt you’re asking whether I have anything nice to say about my XF. Of course I do! As I said earlier I love its appearance. In my view it is perhaps the most beautiful car on the market, and the fact the XE and the new XF look very similar suggests that other buyers agree. I love the polished timber, the stitched leather and the thick carpets – all very British, of course, and it compensates for the XF’s deficiencies in other areas. I love the eight speed automatic transmission that combines perfectly with a willing diesel engine. I love the economy and performance of the 2.2 litre diesel. Of course this engine will be superseded by a completely new engine in the XE and new XF and I assume that it will be quieter and even more economical than the Ford-built engine in my car. On a long trip I achieve less than 5 litres/100km – that’s 56mpg in the old money! I love the quality. This is a car that is assembled to high standards that put to rest the old canard about Jaguar quality. After nearly three years I have had only two minor glitches and these were fixed quickly and efficiently by Solitaire without complaint. So there you have it - a curate’s egg! Jaguar is coming from behind against its German competitors and in my view this is not the time for the company to be stingy. The base car is superb but it is let down by the absence of the “surprise and delight” features that are so important in the value equation for a luxury vehicle. Maybe the XE and new XF will close that gap – otherwise I fear that Jaguar will continue to be a minor player in Australia’s luxury car market. Maybe Jaguar should take a look at the latest Calais V to see how it’s done! Ian Webber Club Patron

40th Anniversary Jaguar XJ-S The Jaguar XJ-S first went on sale in 1976 and though based on a saloon was intended to be a direct replacement for the beautiful – but by then fairly old fashioned – Jaguar E-type. Like the E-type, the XJ-S was intended as a grand tourer and as a result inherited the same 5.3-litre V12 engine that was fitted to the outgoing car. At the time, the XJ-S was the only V12 engined car available that wasn’t an Italian supercar – the others belonging to both Ferrari and Lamborghini. Both manual and automatic transmissions were initially available. Jaguar soon ran into trouble with the XJ-S for two main reasons. The first was that the gas guzzling 5.3-litre V12 was launched in the midst of a national fuel crisis, where spiralling petrol prices meant the public was more interested in cheaper, more economical cars. The second problem was the controversial styling. Not only did it fail to get type approval in Germany due to fears of poor visibility from the rear window, but it was damaged by its association with the E-type. It was universally felt the modern styling was too ugly to be a true successor to the E-type. By 1981 Jaguar had realised the need for a more thrifty version of the XJ-S and so released an updated version of the 5.3-litre engine – this time much more fuel efficient than before. Power also increased to a maximum output of 295bhp. A new dashboard and door cappings were also included in the update, as well as a greater choice of alloy wheels. Recognising the desire for greater fuel efficiency a
20
3.6-litre straight-six also joined the lineup. In 1983 the XJ-SC model went on sale to offer top-down motoring to potential customers, but it proved to be a bit of a sales disaster. Never a true convertible, the targa roof could be removed but the windows – and rear windows – remained in place. Its failure prompted the launched of a proper ragtop in 1988, which was a much bigger hit with the public. In 1991 the car was the recipient of an extensive refresh. Though the car remained the same at a glance, subtle changes were made to the body and buttresses that made them less pronounced, and the rear windows appear smaller. The 3.6-litre AJ6 engine was replaced by a 4-litre version based on the same components, while the 5.3-litre V12 was replaced by a 6-litre unit in 1992. New bumpers were also added to improve the XJS’s aerodynamics (though it was already more slippery than the sleek E-type). A Celebration model was launched in 1995 that would be the last XJS model to go on sale. Only a year later production would end, to be replaced with the much more modern XK8. Buying an XJS: A decent history file is a must, and it should have a great deal of bills and receipts for work carried out. It isn’t just fuel that’s expensive on these cars – most garage bills will be fairly hefty. Avoid cars with gaps in their history that may have been run on a shoe-string. Don’t accept excuses about lost documents during house moves or dogs eating history files – just walk away and find a more genuine car.

1976—77 Broadspeed Jaguar XJ12 Coupe Ralph Broads Southam, Warwickshire, based racing team had excelled in touring car competition since the early 1960s, running Ford Anglias, Mini-Coopers and Triumph Dolomites. Ralph Broad believed in the competition potential of the Jaguar V12 engine. Leyland subsequently contracted Broadspeed to prepare a Group 2 Jaguar XJ12 to confront BMW and Ford in the European Touring Car Championship. The XJ12 Coupe was larger and heavier than its German rivals. An heroic development period from October 1975 saw two cars built for the 1976 racing programme. The newly-constituted Broadspeed Jaguar team missed the first five rounds of the 1976 Championship series for which their big, beautiful XJ12Cs were intended, and the programme did not make its race debut until September that year, in the RAC Tourist Trophy race at Silverstone. There in qualifying, Derek Bell lapped at 1 min 36.72secs, which was nearly two seconds faster than European Champion-elect Pierre Dieudonné in the fastest BMW. Bell led the opening stages of the race until tyre wear became a factor and a puncture interrupted the car's race. Thereafter the Broadspeed Jaguar XJ12C ran spectacularly until co-driver David Hobbs had a driveshaft break and lost a wheel. The Big Cat's presence at the TT had been a great spectator attraction, and a full two-car team presence in the 1977 ETC series was then planned. They were driven by John Fitzpatrick, Tim Schenken, Derek Bell and Andy Rouse. At Monza Fitz qualified on pole position, ¾-second faster than the quickest BMW. He then led the first hour of the 4-Hour race, only for his Coupe to encounter problems thereafter. Salzburgring saw the Jaguars of Bell/Rouse and Schenken/Fitzpatrick qualify on pole position and 4th fastest. Both XJ12Cs led the race, but both retired with
21
failure of the outer driving flange. At Brno, Czechoslovakia, the XJ12Cs took both places on the front row of the starting grid. Fitz then qualified his XJ12C on pole position or the Nurburgring ETC round, before setting an extraordinary new lap record from a standing start on the opening lap! The programmes swansong followed in the 1977 TT at Silverstone for which the two Broadspeed XJ12Cs filled the front row of the starting grid and Schenken led from Rouse at flagfall. The Rouse/Bell car eventually finished fourth. Principal racing modifications to the robustly-built Jaguar Coupe included provision of massive AP brakes cooled by special ducts for all four corners and specially cast suspension components to cope with racing loads. The interior, while stripped and now featuring just one bucket seat, actually retained its walnut veneer dash and electric windows, possibly unique features for a racing car! There was no doubting The Big Cat's unrivalled power, with its tuned 5.4-litre V12 engine developing some 560bhp. The car's extrovert character was amplified by its gigantic 19inch wheels hooded beneath bulging arches, a low front splitter and large bootlid spoiler. Broadspeed and Jaguar combined to pursue mechanical development together with aggressive weight saving while major effort was applied on sump baffling to counter oil surge in the regulation wet-sump V12 engine. Only towards the end of the programme did regulation-change permit drysump development. In hindsight it was unfortunate that Leyland Cars denied the team a third season's competition with the XJ12Cs fully developed and equipped with the legalised dry-sump engine. It seems very likely that the Coupes could have been race winners, and there is no doubt that during 1976-77 the car was very much quicker than its BMW CSL competition. The car pictured above is number 2 of four built by Broadspeed in 1976-77. Upon Broadspeed's closure it was rebuilt by Bob Kerr and features uprated 1977-specification suspension. It formed part of Jaguar enthusiast Allen Lloyds private collection before being acquired by its current owner. It has run no fewer than three times in the Goodwood Festival of Speed and is also eligible for the recently created race series for 1970s/80s touring cars. Its roof is signed by both original team drivers Derek Bell and Andy Rouse. The car pictured opposite is a 1976 Broadspeed XJ12 Coupé. Because I'm a man, when I lock my keys in the car, I will fiddle with a coat hanger long after hypothermia has set in. Calling AAA is not an option. I will win. Because I'm a man , when the car isn't running very well, I will pop the hood and stare at the engine as if I know what I'm looking at. If another man shows up, one of us will say to the other, 'I used to be able to fix these things, but now with all these computers and everything, I wouldn't know where to start.' We will then drink a couple of beers and break wind, as a form of holy communion. Because I'm a man, when I catch a cold, I need someone to bring me soup and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You're a woman. You never get as sick as I do, so for you, this is no problem. Because I'm a man, I can be relied upon to purchase basic groceries at the store, like beer, milk or bread. I cannot be expected to find exotic items like 'cumin' or 'tofu.' For all I know, these are the same thing. Because I'm a man, when one of our appliances stops working, I will insist on taking it apart, despite evidence that this will just cost me twice as much once the repair person gets here and has to put it back together.

And don't forget to pick up something for my mother, too. Because I'm a man, you don't have to ask me if I liked the movie. Chances are, if you're crying at the end of it, I didn't and if you are feeling amorous afterwards....then I will certainly at least remember the name and recommend it to others. Because I'm a man, I think what you're wearing is fine. I thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was fine, too. Either pair of shoes is fine. With the belt or without it, looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine. Can we just go now? Because I'm a man, and this is, after all, the year 2015, I will share equally in the housework. You just do the laundry, the cooking, the cleaning, the vacuuming, and the dishes, and I'll do the rest...... Like wandering around in the garden with a beer wondering what to do. This has been a public service message for women to Help them better understand men.

Member’s Pride
by Robin and Roseanne Bullock
Our Jaguar story doesn’t begin with Jaguar but with a simple “Love of The Motor Car”. There has always been a fascination with beautiful motorcars. My first car was a Delage straight-8 circa 1934; magnificent but problematic (particularly sans licence and rego). Roseanne had always been surrounded by exotic machinery. Her father owned a garage specialising in motor-body building and coachwork. The workshop always had the odd Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce etc in for repair and restoration, and on one occasion an Hispano Suiza. The everyday family car was a lovely Bristol 400. He also purloined a magnificent 1919 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost for our wedding car. He was a Committee member of the Light Car Club of Australia (LCCA), and a scrutineer at most motor sports events in Victoria including the AGP’s at Albert Park in the glory years of the D-Type. We met when I joined the Junior LCCA in 1965 after buying a 1275 Mini Cooper S. Regular attendance at motor racing events exposed us to Bob Jane’s Mk11 Jaguar in action, which left a lasting impression. The Mini was followed by a couple of Cortina GTs, an MG TD and a trusty EH wagon until we moved to the Northern Territory in 1974. We then we opted for a more appropriate mode of transport for the environment. (Cyclone Tracy that year would have destroyed any ‘cool’ vehicle that we might have had anyway). The next 30 years in the NT had us in 4WD’s but the interest in motor sport continued, and the fascination with Jaguars remained no doubt aided by titillating glimpses of a black XK120 under a tarpaulin in a nearby street, an XJS owned by a work colleague, the mighty XJS at Bathurst, and the arrival in Alice Springs of the Jaguars re-enacting the XK120 speed record run from Darwin to Alice Springs. In 2004 we moved south to the Adelaide Hills and thought it was time for a ”toy”. Whilst visiting a friend in Adelaide his brother-in-law happened to be there with a lovely 80’s Daimler that really caught our attention. He happened to be (the late) Martin O’Dea whose family had just bought him membership with the JDCSA. When on the lookout for a car we looked at a couple of Jaguars. They didn’t quite fit the bill but we then knew the marque we wanted. We spotted an ad for a Jaguar XJ6 in the paper and when we saw it we knew we had to have it – a lovely Series 3 in stunning Antelope paint, and with $15,500 in recent receipts as a bonus. The interior had that same heady aroma of leather and wood that we recalled from the Bristol, air conditioning, power steering and windows. What else could we ask for? We bought it then and there.
23
We joined the JDCSA in May 2005 thereby reacquainting us with Martin O’Dea in the process, and found a whole new family of friends with the Club, and a fund of assistance and information. (It transpired that the XJ had been an earlier Club vehicle previously owned by Allan Letts). The Series 3 was a dream to drive, smooth and powerful, and we very much enjoyed that vehicle for 10 years as a virtual daily driver, on Club runs and trips interstate. However, some years ago the wandering eye had been taken with an X300 Ron and Claire Palmer brought on Club runs. In 2013 Martin O’Dea’s family gifted him a lovely 1995 sapphire blue Jaguar X300 Sport to replace a somewhat troublesome XJ6 Series 3. Sadly we lost our much-loved member Martin in 2014. His daughter and son-in-law had Martin’s X300 at Jag Day that October with a for-sale sign on it. Again, the rest is history. We bought the X300, and subsequently sold our Series 3 to Ron and Rosie Bailey. A good result as both cars remained in the Club. The X300 is a different beast to the Series 3. Whilst not as luxurious a ride with the Sport suspension but more fun on windy roads, and the Hills are full of them! It is also nice to have some modern electronics, as well as airbags and ABS brakes – to say nothing of vastly improved fuel economy. Since the purchase we have had some refurbishment carried out to get all things as they should be and for that we thank Sovereign Autos. The reward came at this years All British Day display at Echunga when Roseanne was awarded with the trophy for the Best Vehicle by a Lady Entrant. We were pretty pleased with this, both for ourselves, and as a dedication to “Marty”, after whom the X300 has been affectionately (and respectfully) named. We are looking forward to many more kilometres in the X300. The future? Hmmm. A 4.0 Litre XJR?
