Winter is here and it has been a bit of a
shock. This is when the heated seats in the convertible are great. As my three years as President come to an end at the AGM in September, I would like to ask people to consider taking an executive or supporting role within the Club. Several members of Executive will be stepping down and vacancies will exist. The camaraderie and support of members within the club is tremendous. Several instances have come up recently showing how important this is. When we were in Tamworth waiting for the mechanic to find a part (which we suspect the mechanic broke) for my Jaguar he advised at this stage it would take 4 weeks and $1000 to get the part to Tamworth. Tamworth is a lovely town but we didn’t fancy spending four weeks there, particularly without a car. Roger rang Geoff Mockford at Sovereign Automotive who is a club member and has several Jags. He had the part in stock and even though it was now about 4pm, he was somehow able to get the part couriered to Tamworth overnight where the new part was fitted and we were back on the road by 11 am. I also heard that during a recent run to view Carl Lindner’s collection a club member noted his brake light was not working. Prognosis was a brake light pressure switch. Jake, Carl’s mechanic, couldn’t find one in his spare parts so he took the part from an E Type they had on their floor. It was fitted on the spot and the member was able to drive home safely.
WILL YOU RISK A FINE AND CANCELLATION OF YOUR HISTORIC REGISTRATION?
No doubt there are plenty of other stories of similar situations where it is so important to be part of a good supportive club where so many others are also passionate about the Marque. An ideal place to catch up with a lot of those members will be our Annual Jag Day on October 16th. Please consider helping out with organisation of this event as many hands make light work. Contact Julian Lugg if you are able to assist. Our run to Carl Lindner’s on the 7th of May was well attended. We had approximately 70 people, including 6 members from the Jaguar Drivers Club Hunter Region. Everyone spent an hour or two admiring many of Carl’s beautiful Jaguars and hearing of the history of many. I would like to thank both Carl and Jake for this opportunity. This was followed by lunch at the Barossa Weintal Hotel. Although the service was a bit slow, the food was good and plenty of it. Peter and Roz Holland, Roger and myself have had a catch up with Ian Hissey and his partner the day before the Barossa Run. We discussed both past and future National Rallies. These discussions proved most valuable with plenty of opportunity for discussion on options and change for our National Rally, so if you are interested in being part of the organising committee for our National Rally in 2018 please let me know. Our next National Rally meeting will be Friday 10th June at our place 7pm. Hope to see you Tuesday 7th June at the General Meeting.

Editors Burble I am a supporter of the principle that cyclists have a right to share our public roads. However I have to ask what brain dead individuals decided it would be a good idea if we allow all bike riders to use our footpaths? The result is we can now have all kinds of cyclists travelling at whatever speed they wish along our suburban and city footpaths. This practice was previously illegal for good reason—to protect pedestrians from injury but apparently now protecting cyclists from injury is more important. We have already had some serious accidents of cyclists mowing down elderly pedestrians and refusing to stop to render any assistance. Of course they can escape any form of accountability as there is no identification in the form of a number plate and no form of insurance that comes with vehicle registration.
“They can escape any form of accountability ….” Now we hear that some smart Liberal politician has come up with another clever idea. Why not extend the current Third Party Injury insurance that comes with vehicle registrations to cover cyclists. Apparently the logic behind this wonderful idea is to provide financial support for injured pedestrians by providing insurance cover and compensation after they get knocked down by a speeding cyclist on a footpath. So the cyclist can still escape any form of accountability or responsibility for his/her actions. Of course guess who pays for the extra premium for Third Party Insurance—you got it! registered vehicle owners. Now, I am not bashing cyclists here. As I have stated they have a right to be on our roads. But that’s my point, “On our Roads” not on our footpaths. What do you think? Please write to the Editor and express your opinion. Letters to the Editor Dear 2016 All British Day Participants, The 14th of February is well and truly behind us, and yet we still seem to be enjoying the fine weather. Thankfully the opportunity is still present for us to use and enjoy our British vehicles before winter closes in. I am writing to you firstly to say thank you to those who supported the day, and also offered assistance to the ABD Committee making it possible for us to staff and run ABD this year. You may recall last year, Ian Hay sent out an SOS to the clubs asking for help on the day. I am pleased to say that ABD was well supported for the 2016 event, with many helping on the Saturday setting up the event, and to the many marshals that assisted with the traffic flow on the Sunday. We are truly grateful for the help we received. However there is lot more to All British Day than erecting signs and marking the Ovals on the Saturday and directing traffic on the Sunday. There have been recent developments in our small committee and after 20 years’ service at least 3 members will be retiring. The success and the size of the event dictates that it is essential that we must replace these retiring members. It is worth noting that some of the processes used in running All British Day you might be able to use them in your club. The previous and present committees have worked hard to try and stream line the event and make it easy to run, I personally feel All British Day has the reputation of one of the main motoring events in the South Australian calendar. Many clubs now use All British Day as one of their annual runs and it is rewarding to see the diverse representation of British engineering displayed on the day. Not everyone is aware that All British Day does involve the community of Echunga, the day allows the various sporting and social groups to raise funds via the sale of food and refreshments on the day. Hopefully I have given some insight that ABD is more than a one day car show, we do give back to the community and as funds permit we have donated to charities over the years. In closing, I would like to draw your attention to our A.G.M., as advertised in the programme that will be held on Friday the 13th of May at the Sporting Car Club 51 King William Road Unley, at 8.00 pm. All British Day is entering its 33rd year. Many people I speak to enjoy the day. All we need is just 3 new committee members as a minimum to allow us to continue. Essentially, if you think the event is worth supporting and would like to be a part of this iconic event, please come on May 13 th. Should you wish to find out more please do not hesitate to contact me on email jlwsms@bigpond.com or phone 83449102 (after hours). Jamie Sandford-Morgan—Vice President

Celebrating 80 Years — Jaguar SS 100 THE BOTTOM LINE How Courteous are SA Motorists?
How many times have you been cut off by a driver, had a car park stolen, or had someone speed up just to block your path? Did you continue driving as normal – albeit a little annoyed – or did you curse under your breath? Perhaps in your pre-caffeinated state in the morning, you wound down the window and yelled something to the offending driver?

Daimler to Daimler and the Jags in between My entry into the world of Jaguars came about by chance. In the early 90’s, when I ran my own engraving business, I was returning some trophies to a customer when I noticed a Daimler Sovereign Series 2 at the side of his garage. I told him that I thought it was nice and he replied that it was for sale at a cheap price because it had a problem. He thought it was the head gasket that had gone because it kept blowing out water. I took it out for a drive and it ran really well. It was in great condition and everything worked (even the air-con). As I had been working on engines for many years I took a punt and bought it for the equivalent of $500. When I got it home I looked it over more thoroughly I found that someone had slammed the bonnet down with something on top of the brass header tank and buckled the lip so the radiator cap did not seal properly. I flattened it out and fitted the cap and the head gasket problem was fixed. I ran the Sovereign for a couple of years but then fuel prices started their upward spiral so I decided to sell it, and got treble what I paid for it. In 1996 I was offered a dismantled 1950 Jaguar Mk V for silly money which took me 15 years (on and off) to repair and rebuild, which most of you may have read about in the Classic Marque in 2011/12, under the heading “The Jag
that Jack Built”, which rekindled my interest in Jaguars. Having had numerous Ford cars which I ran as a company car I decided it was time for a change My next car was a XJ Series 3 with a new M.O.T. (a yearly test you have to pass in the UK). I ran the car for a year until the next test which it failed miserably. It had been botched up with fibreglass and underseal and an under the counter M.O.T. – it went out in style in a banger race at Wimbledon Stadium. My next Jag, a 3.6 XJ40, was a television star. I bought it from a guy who had a collection of cars that he used to hire out to television companies and was seen in many episodes of “The Bill” a police series in the UK. Despite its reputation it was one of the most reliable cars I have owned in the 4.5 years I had it. The most I had to do was change a few globes, then it got the dreaded tin worm. Next was a beautiful Kingfisher Blue Series 3 Sovereign and in the 3 years of ownership, the only thing I had to replace was a sagging headlining. When we decided to Emigrate to Australia in 2006, the shipping agent came to check what we would be taking, other than household things. I pointed to the Mk V and the Series 3 Sovereign. He said that he could get the Mk V in

with the household stuff, but the other Jag would have to go in a separate container which would increase the shipping bill a lot. I reluctantly accepted this situation and decided to sell the Sovereign and hoped to buy one in Australia. A big mistake – the most I could get for it was $2000. On arrival in Adelaide I shopped around and eventually found a nice Series XJ6 in Myponga (which belonged to a member of the J.C.C.C.) for $7200, so I ended up paying more for a car than if I had brought the Sovereign with me. I still have the XJ and over the last 9 years has been pretty reliable. Over the years there has been one model that has always caught my eye – the 420 compact. I have chased a couple but to no avail. Then on my way home from the city (with road closures due to the Clipsal) I went past Evan’s Sports Car Centre, and outside was Bob Kretschmer’s Daimler Sovereign 420. After a chat with Evan and Bob, the said Daimler now resides in my garage, waiting for me to do a bit of restoration before putting it on the road, but for those who know me, the Rheumatoid has taken over in my hands so I think it might take a while, but I will get it done. Once the Daimler is up and running, it will be goodbye XJ and the Sovereign can keep our Mk V company in the garage. 7 The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia Jack Richardson

Jaguars steal the limelight at Shannon’s Autumn Auction A quartet of Classic Jaguars brought the stand out vehicle results at Shannon’s May 2 Melbourne Autumn Auction where 91 per cent of all vehicles sold under the hammer for a solid $2 million-plus overall result. While the top individual result of the auction was the $142,000 paid for a beautifully presented, Red, right hand drive Jaguar Series 1, 4.2 E-Type coupe, it was pushed hard for bragging rights by a restored Jaguar 1966 Series 1, 4.2-litre 2+2 Coupe that eventually sold with ‘no reserve’ for $136,000 – almost twice its pre-auction estimate.
Equally outstanding was the $69,000 paid for a circa-1964 Jaguar Mk2, 3.8 Manual Saloon featuring a number of mechanical upgrades and the $64,000 realised by a beautiful British Racing Green 1948 Jaguar Mk IV 3.5 Saloon offered with ‘no reserve’. Rounding off a great night for Jaguars, a ‘no reserve’ black 1951 Jaguar Mk V Saloon that had travelled just 14,000 miles in the hands of its current owner for the past 16 years brought $28,000.

Jaguar XJR-15
JAGUAR XJR-15 The Jaguar XJR-15 is a two-seater sports car produced by Jaguar Sport, a subsidiary of Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing between 1990 and 1992. Only 53 were made, each selling for US$960,165. Based mechanically on the Le Mans-winning Jaguar XJR-9, the car had an aerodynamic body designed by Tony Southgate and styled by Peter Stevens, who later went on to style the McLaren F1. The car featured in a racing series called the Jaguar Intercontinental Challenge, which supported 3 Formula 1 races (Monaco, Silverstone and Spa) in 1991. The $1m prize was won by Armin Hahne. Tom Walkinshaw conceived the concept in 1988, following Jaguar's success at Le Mans, enlisting Peter Stevens to develop a road-going version of the XJR-9, originally designated as R-9R. A number of wealthy racing enthusiasts were keen to own such a car and pressed Walkinshaw into manufacturing a 'road going racer'. Original owners included Derek Warwick, Bob Wollek, Vern Schuppan, Matt Aitken, Andy Evans and the Sultan of Brunei. In order to adapt the XJR-9 for road use, Stevens made a number of modifications to increase space and improve access. "Taking the race car as a base, we widened the cockpit by 75 mm (3.0 in) and raised the roof by 40 mm (1.6 in) to allow more headroom" he said, when interviewed in 1991.[1] "The scale model was ready by Easter 1989, from there we went to clay...which was finished by October (1989). The first prototype was held up by Le Mans
preparations but it was ready for Tom (Walkinshaw) to drive when he came back from France in July 1990." TWR explicitly developed the XJR-15 as a road-going racing car, in the mould of the Jaguar C and D types, the Ford GT40 and the Ferrari 250 GTO. As such, the car complied with British construction and use regulations and could be registered by the owner for road-use in the UK, although with such a limited production run, the car was never type approved. The car's production was announced in a press release on Nov 15, 1990 with an official launch at Silverstone in 1991. XJR-15 was built by Jaguar Sport in Bloxham Oxfordshire (a subsidiary of TWR)England from 1990 to 1992. TheXJR-15 was the World’s first fully carbon-fibre road-car. MORE SOUNDS AND VIDEO

100 Jaguar E-types to drive coastal tour of Britain
A coastal circumnavigation exclusively for Britain's favourite classic car takes place this September, as Malcolm McKay reports Britain’s favourite sports car will give a boost to the Prostate Cancer UKcharity this September when 100 E-types will take part in a 3,600-mile drive around the coast of Britain. A car that emphasises the confidence of Britain in the 1960s, a bold and successful attempt to build an affordable racing car for the road, the Jaguar E-type. The most common cancer in men, causing one death every hour in the UK, can be countered by confidence and awareness: getting diagnosed early recently saved the life of E-type fanatic Philip Porter, who has written numerous books on E-types and owns both the oldest E-type existing – the coupé unveiled to the Press at Geneva in 1961 – and the red roadster that starred in The Italian Job.
Maldon, and Folkestone, arriving back at Goodwood on Thursday, September 29. Spectator support will be most welcome and you can keep track of the route and civic receptions along the way via www.e-typeclub.com. Above all, charity donations are most welcome via www.justgiving.com. Jaguar specialist SNG Barratt is generously contributing spares and breakdown support for the whole event and the aim is to raise at least £50,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. I sincerely hope I can find the time between now and September to get my own 1966 E-type 2+2 into a good enough condition to join in. I imported the car from USA last year in scruffy condition after at least 15 years off the road, fulfilling a lifelong desire to own Britain’s finest sports car (albeit in its least sought-after shape!) before prices went totally out of my reach.
Philip was galvanised into action, to raise awareness of prostate cancer and raise money to help beat it. He runs the E-type Club, and conceived the greatest E-type event ever – a relay run all around the coast of Great Britain, about 3,600 miles, this September. Up to 100 E-types will start from Goodwood immediately after the Revival Meeting, on September 12 and, as some peel off and others join along the way, the spectacular Etype cavalcade will circumnavigate the coasts of England, Wales and Scotland with overnight stops at Lyme Regis, Penzance, Bridgwater, Tenby, Portmeirion, Blackpool, Carlisle, Largs, Kyle of Lochalsh, Kinlochbervie, Inverness, Stonehaven, Berwick upon Tweed, Bridlington, Cromer,
My dream (if I can’t do it all, as Philip and some others have pledged to do) would be to do the Scottish loop but, while some reckon that will be the quietest section of the relay drive, I think it will be one of the most popular, taking in as it does some of Britain’s finest coastal scenery. Other sections bound to be popular are from Dorset to Land’s End, back up the north side and then all round Wales… But then, Kent and the south coast will be popular too… and East Anglia… and the Lake District… and – well, we’ll have to see, but one thing’s for sure – this is going to be a great celebration of E-types as well as a terrific way to raise money and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK.

The Good Oil About Changing Oils
lulled the average motorist into a sense of false belief that the car’s engine will somehow survive on its own and that it doesn’t really matter if engine services are overlooked or extended. It has been left to the aftermarket workshops to educate motorists about lubrication disciplines. Owner manuals stipulate that the engine oil be changed at recommended intervals. The following is from a typical owner’s manual, which lists ‘severe’ driving conditions. These driving patterns could apply to almost every vehicle, and means that the vehicle must have oil changes more frequently than the standard service – maybe every 7,500 kilometres or six months, whichever occurs first.
What oil does Separates and lubricates moving parts Reduces engine wear Prevents deposits from forming on internal
engine components
Suspends contaminants until they can be removed at the next oil change Cools engine parts Protects the engine over a wide temperature range Most technological advancements in engines rely on oil pressure and quality
When oil starts to break down, it is increasingly less able to do the hard work of lubricating the engine. The oil’s numerous additives and detergents evaporate, lose potency, or are simply used up. Dirty oil can no longer remove and prevent harmful gunk so impotent oil allows sludge build-up, comprised of unburned and partially burnt fuel, metal fragments from wear and dirt that find their way into the engine. Deposits of dirt and debris are carried through the oil until they find somewhere to settle, restricting or blocking the surrounding oil flow, which causes increased engine wear. Thick and gummy deposits are formed and harden once they settle. Once a blockage spot is established, new buildup will settle on top of it instead of allowing the oil to flow around it. Prime targets for deposits include the fuel injectors, piston rings and valves, all of which will interfere with the engine’s operation.
How to keep your car healthy and happy The best insurance a car owner can have against very costly repairs, even early in a new car’s life, is to pay closer attention to service intervals and driving patterns. Adopt a competent aftermarket auto workshop that will ask about your driving patterns and keep a job card for your vehicle to ensure that an appropriate oil change service is carried out, long before sludge problems occur and therefore saving you a costly early repair or even engine replacement Refer to the manufacturer’s manual to determine what type of oil to use in your car’s engine and take particular notice of all references to the frequency of oil changes under certain driving conditions.

Warranties have grown over the years but
have cars become more reliable. In 1956 I remember Morris Minors and other British makes, would stop at the front of our house at Croydon and an industrious mechanic would climb out adjust the idle, or tighten a bolt, or adjust a door etc, and drive on. There was a constant procession of cars leaving the inevitable oil spots, which would grace our road, every day as cars were prepared for sale and offered with, what was then a huge 3-month warranty.
In 1959 dad decided to replace our 1938 Oldsmobile, which had previously been a green cab in Sydney for a brand spanking new Holden. Remember cars were very scarce after the war and anything survived if it was still capable of moving. What a dream was the new FC Holden with a bright maroon flash on the side bench seats in the tiny body and a 2250 cc engine and vacuum windscreen wipers, it was the peak of technology in Australia. It came with a 6-month warranty and drum brakes. However our family fitted and we soon learnt to survive the cross ply tyres, the windscreen wipers that went fast with the foot off the accelerator But nothing when accelerating in the rain. Big puddles were avoided, as the drum brakes would fail as they got saturated and the practice of driving with the foot firmly applied to the brake drying the brakes out as you kept the accelerator firmly planted was common practice. The hills were always good for us kids as no safety belts (never heard of them) and we could slide across the vinyl seats as we traversed the corners The next car of significance was an HQ Holden now with radial tyres and a RTS
suspension (radial tuned suspension) and disc brakes. The bench seats were still king but electric windscreen wipers and disc brakes were now available as well as Safety belts which were not liked but becoming mandatory. We had progressed to a one-year warranty. Vinyl seats still ruled. The eighties and nineties passed without significant changes to the warranties but we now had a choice of diesels and turbochargers with some cars offering 3-year warranties and consumer legislation taking more interest in enforcing them. The 2000s now present major advances in technology with GPS self parking sensors surrounding us to make up for the very poor visibility from the drivers seat and are oriented around ipads and phones rather than driving. We are now in the era of 5 and 7-year warranties lead by the Koreans who must have superb confidence in their products and the poor old Holden died as it could not understand what it was all about. The demand for vinyl seats and vacuum wipers seems to have declined. Editors Note Thanks Roger for this story. Of course your lovely XJ6 Series 1 has out grown its warranty many years ago. But being a Jaguar still turns heads and is admired by all.

The Cat’s Whiskers The woman was applying for a job in a lemon orchard in Country Queensland. She seemed to be far too qualified for the job; given her arts and education degrees from Melbourne University and her job as a social worker and a teacher at the local TAFE college. The foreman frowned and said, “I have to ask you this: "Have you had any actual experience in picking lemons?" "Well, as a matter of fact, I have!" "I've been divorced three times, owned a Nissan Bluebird, a Leyland P76, supported Collingwood the last 4 years, voted for Tony Abbot and bought shares in Dick Smith."
Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped quietly into the garage I hooked up the boat up to the van, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour.

The pilot happened to overhear them and said, "Listen folks, I'll make you a deal. I'll take you both up for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word, I won't charge you anything. But, if you say one word, then you'll have to pay the ten dollars." Fred and Ethel agreed, so up they went. The pilot did all kinds of rolls and dives, twists and turns, but not a word was heard. He did all his fancy maneuvers again, but still not a word. When they finally landed, the pilot turned to Fred and said, "Gosh, I did everything I could think of to get you to yell out, and yet you never said a word." "Well," Fred replied, "I was going to say something when Ethel fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars."
The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is terrible."
My loving wife of 5 years replied, "Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?" Fred and Ethel: Every year, Fred and Ethel would spend a day at the Air Show. Every year, Fred would say, "Ethel, I'd like to ride in that airplane." And every year, Ethel would say, "I know, Fred, but that airplane ride cost ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars." One year, while they were at the show, Fred said, "Ethel, I'm 74 years old. If I don't have a ride in that airplane this year, I may
