Club Torque PRESIDENT’S REPORT th

I am pleased to confirm that SA JAG DAY is set for 11 October 2015 at Brighton Secondary School. There are several major Register events on during October along with Bathurst and other sporting events so dates were tricky. Phil has managed to negotiate to have the Boot Sale move to the back oval and we will be in the same position as last year. Thanks Phil for persevering. NOW we need a committee to co-ordinate the event. Most of the contacts and past procedures have been documented over the last few years which makes this task a lot easier. Please consider putting your hand up to either co-ordinate the group or just be part of the committee. Let me know if you are interested or would like to discuss what would be involved. After attending our first National Rally in March this year I am looking forward to next year’s rally in Queensland. This will be held at the Oakes Resort, Caloundra on the 15th April to the 18th April 2016 followed by the usual Post Rally Tour. They are promising a great event so consider taking the Jaguar for a good run and join the SA group that will head to Queensland. For those of you that didn’t venture to McLaren Vale for the Vintage and Classic you missed a great day. The weather was a bit threatening but we managed to stay dry and warm. We had over 50 Jaguars at Penny’s Hill Winery and enjoyed a wonderful gourmet BBQ for lunch.

UK Suppliers Share In Jaguar Land Rover’s Success as Company Celebrates its Two Iconic Brands Joining Forces at Solihull Jaguar Land Rover's Solihull Manufacturing Plant today marked another significant milestone in its 70 year history as it welcomed the Jaguar brand to the site for the first time. The West Midlands based plant marked the beginning of production of the all-new Jaguar XE with the official opening of its state-of-the-art £500m 'factory within a factory'. The Jaguar XE, which represents the culmination of more than £2bn of product, infrastructure and technology investment, has been heralded as vitally important for the British automotive supply chain thanks to an additional £4bn worth of contracts committed to 55 UK based suppliers. Together these suppliers, which cover the length and breadth of the country, have provided 55% of the components to this allnew model in the Jaguar line-up. Jaguar Land Rover Purchasing Director, Ian Harnett, said of the impact of Jaguar's latest model: "Jaguar Land Rover is one of the UK's success stories, not simply because it has seen an upsurge in demand thanks to sustained investment, but because it has been able to support a burgeoning, high-tech, highly skilled supply base here in the UK. With each successive new or upgraded model, we are seeing the positive impact felt amongst the entire automotive sector which is great news for everyone committed to ensuring the UK remains truly competitive on a global stage." The arrival of the XE at the Solihull manufacturing plant is significant for both the Jaguar and Land Rover brands. Renowned for producing some of the world's most iconic saloon cars in history, the advent of XE production at Solihull marks a key milestone for Jaguar, in this, its 80th year. For Land Rover, welcoming the Jaguar brand to its home is the latest in a string of significant developments which have seen the site undergo a spectacular transformation in just five years. In this short time, Solihull production has almost trebled and the workforce has doubled.

Jaguar News

Jaguar Land Rover Is Honoured With 2015 ‘Sustainable Development’ Queen’s Award Jaguar Land Rover has received a 2015 Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, for reducing the environmental impact of its products and its operations. This is the 14th Queen's Award that Jaguar and Land Rover have received since 1967 - the second year of the scheme. It follows a 2014 award for International Trade, in recognition of Jaguar Land Rover's outstanding overseas sales growth.

Whole lifecycle' approach The company's 8,000 designers and engineers take a 'whole lifecycle' approach to vehicle development, aiming to reduce impact on the environment right through from raw materials to eventual vehicle disposal. These measures have already helped significantly reduce CO2 emissions, with the company's EU fleet average on track to be 25% lower in 2015 than in 2007.

Aluminium-intensive and advanced technologies The all-new Jaguar XE mid-sized sports saloon demonstrates Jaguar Land Rover's uses of advanced technologies to create a vehicle that leads its sector. The XE can achieve fuel economy figures of 75mpg and CO 2 emissions down to 99g/km.

Doubling the workforce and increasing skills Jaguar Land Rover's approach also contributes to social, economic and leadership dimensions of sustainable development. The company is helping address the UK skills gap, with a training and skills programme aimed at young people at school (STEM initiatives), recruitment of over 2,000 apprentices and graduate engineers in the last five years, and investment in on-going training to develop engineering skills among its workforce. "We have doubled our workforce in five years, developed a culture of continually increasing their skills and we are helping to inspire the next generation of engineers," said Dr Speth The company also has a sector-leading global Corporate Social Responsibility programme to deliver opportunities for 12 million people worldwide by 2020. In the first year of the activation (2013/14), 1.5 million people benefitted from education and clean water opportunities through NGOs such as the Red Cross and Climate Care.

Members Pride The BIG CATS cast their spell again! Growing up in country Victoria most of the cars in use in the 40’s and 50’s were the usual mundane vehicles till Mr Blutcher, a family friend, bought a new black MkVII, it was the first jaguar in town. We kids could look but DON’T TOUCH! A year or two later his son arrived back from University driving a MKV which was my first ride in a jaguar as James was a little bit more lenient with the interior of his car. Fell in love with the blue lights shining down on the dashboard – had to have one.... When I was ready to buy a car I found a MKV in the local Holden Dealers yard but dad wouldn’t let me buy it because of the size of the exhaust pipe “must use lots of petrol if it

8

has a pipe that size” so ended up with an Austin A40 with a 1 inch exhaust pipe. After marriage and children I got transferred to SA in the late 60’s where we met our neighbour Murray Lindner who later bought a MKIV in pieces which we started to restore. Having difficulty recognising the pieces I suggested I buy a ‘going’ car that we could copy. We ended up restoring both cars and finishing at the same time. We heard of the JDC starting and were at the first meeting becoming member’s number 5 and 6. After attending a few meetings we contacted like minded SS and MKIV owners and it was decided to start the SS Register which led to contacting the Victorian Register and the start of the Border Runs, the first one being to Swan Hill and these have continued to this day with many happy memories and friends. Other Jaguars I have owned include a MKIX, XJ6 Coupe, a 1½ L MKIV that nearly killed me as I hotwired it to start it, with no exhaust, no floorboards, sitting on a box to back it out, suddenly realized there was no interior door or

Members Pride window handles and heaps of exhaust coming into the car, in a state of panic didn’t realise I could stall the thing and stop it. When I came to my senses and stalled it, I still had to get out – try dropping through the floor and coming out under the chassis rails! Just as well I wasn’t as big as I am now.... The best Jaguar trip we have had was in our blue MKIV towing a camper trailer to WA with 9 other assorted Jags for their Concour – MANY funny stories on that trip. After the first night of camping it was decided that a well known MKIX owner had to camp away from the rest of us because of their snoring! Another couple known for their entertaining attire had decided to introduce to one of our campsites, Easter Bunny, unfortunately the Easter Bunny and his dressers had partaken of too much Easter cheer and had trouble fitting his fluffy tail the noise coming from the tent sounded like he was having his way with them. Too many tales to tell....... It’s funny how life changes by a chance meeting, when Murray came down with the photos of loads of jag bits all excited about “look what I’ve bought” and took us from VW’s, Rovers etc., to lots of friends and good times in the JDCSA and a shed now containing the MKIV (which we have owned for over 40yrs); XJS Convertible; 3.8 S Type; XJ8 4.2; 2 Classic Mustangs; Lotus Europa and Ann’s Pajero to keep me entertained in my retirement – have to stop as the MKIV needs attention. Minutes of the E-Type F-Type and Grand Tourer Register Meeting Held at Rick & Louise’s Lovely Home 7.30pm on 26th March 2015 Present: Alan Baker, Rick Luff, Louise Pitt, Gary Dunn, Roger & Di Adamson, Peter and Rob Beaumont, Chris Lake, Dan Jeffries, Peter Leaf-Milham, Alan Bartram, Richard Shipman, Peter Oliphant, Bruce Rick and Louise opened their wonderful property and welcomed the register. Rick has invested in an Argo Formula 2 Racing car that we had the privilege of being at its unveiling. The Argo is a recent acquisition for Rick replacing the V12 XJS tribute car and has a very long pedigree of racing wins. Rick will use this year to acclimatise himself with the car and the track at Mallala before entering the competitive class. He would be delighted if we can rally some good support for him when he is sorting the car out at Mallala . Picture below shows Louise and Di unveiling the Argo and Rick provided a rundown of the car and its almost limitless ability to be set up.

A big thank you to Margaret & Bill for hosting the meeting again in this idyllic location which again had to be inside due to the heat

A thank you to Anik & Richard for supplying their home grown beef patties./rissoles (depending where you come from) which were extremely delicious

A general discussion was held on the frequency and location of meetings. It was agreed that the suggested calendar issued to everyone by Tim be accepted for 2015, being a good compromise

The petition for the retention of the Cobdogla steam pump was briefly discussed with invitation to sign Bill presented a particularly lateral gift he had received for his 70th from the Bent Tubes. It was a scale model of a Mark 2, completely stripped and all parts put into envelopes (many). Even the shell of the car had been rubbed down to metal and paint supplied. All this was presented in a metal case complete with brushes and of course no instructions. A very clever present which Bill advised he will leave in its current form. JUST WHAT IS THIS ACJC? As time moves on the membership changes within our Clubs since new people arrive all the time. So “Just what is this ACJC?” is a question they might well ask. As well, amongst those members who have been in the Clubs for a long time, it could be that their knowledge of the ACJC, what it is, what it does, has been lost in the mists of time. The ACJC was created back in 1984 when the Jaguar organisation as it then was, Jaguar Rover Australia, agreed to sponsor the organisation. In the years leading up to this the various Clubs had come together for a Concours, often in a country town, together with some sporting activities (such as a motorkhana) and a couple of dinners followed by what can really be described as a chat between the management of the various Clubs on the Monday. However the arrangement had been a very loose one and it was full of difficulties. The National Rally in Albury in 1983 saw the start of a change. The consensus was that there should be a central body to co-ordinate communication between the State bodies. It wasn’t to be a new Club but a federation of the eight major Australian Clubs which all have an interest in the marque started by Sir William Lyons, the Jaguar. And so the Australian Council of Jaguar Clubs was conceived “as a body with equality in votes irrespective of the size of each constituent Club”. But the question was how to fund such a body? John Crawford of Jaguar Rover Australia was approached and agreed to cover the costs of the two meetings per year. But part of the arrangement was that the ACJC should become the one body that JRA supported, and through whom communications passed, rather than each of the Clubs and others making direct approaches to JRA. Today that is still the expressed wish of Jaguar Australia. Subsequently, following the 1998 Gold Coast Rally, at which Yokohama (not a Jaguar supplier) was the major sponsor, Jaguar offerred to assist in the sponsorship of the National Rally. These days effectively every registrant at a National Rally, through that support, is indirectly subsidised to the extent of approximately $50 per person, in addition to the separate support Jaguar has chosen to provide for the Welcome Party on a case-by-case basis. How does the Council function you might wonder. The Council is an Incorporated Association under 20

the South Australian law. It is a non-profit body under the taxation law. Each of the Clubs appoint or elect one of their own members to be their ACJC delegate. It is through this person that the wishes of the Clubs, and their views on topics, become known. In most instances these delegates are full members of their own Club’s Committee. They act as the voice of that Committee at a National level. For a period of time meetings used to be over two days in Sydney. However it was regarded that, with more efficient management of the business to be done, it could be achieved within one day (albeit rather long for some delegates) and thereby contain the costs of the Council. The delegates now attend a one-day meeting in Sydney every six months in February and August, the latter being the Annual General Meeting. It is helpful to the functioning of the Council when delegates are, or have been, actively involved in their own Club and the classic Jaguar movement. We are currently fortunate to have as delegates people who have a history of managerial involvement in their respective Clubs. Ian Hissey (JDCHR), current ACJC Chairman. He has been a member of his Club for 10 years, has been President for the past 7 years after some years as Editor of their magazine. Ian has also been a member of the JDCA for 16 years, serving on Committee and as Editor there for a lengthy time. In 2006 he looked after Promotion and Administration for the JDCA-organised National Rally in Newcastle after previously having handled Administration for the 2000 Rally in Sydney. Each year Ian organises the extended trips over 2-3 weeks that the JDCHR undertakes to the National Rally and is very involved in social and sporting aspects of the Clubs with his XJ6 & XJ-SC. Ian is also involved in young driver training with his and other Clubs. Rod Mathers (JCCWA) is the current Secretary of the ACJC, a member of the JCCWA for 15 years and a Jaguar owner for 55 years. He is an active member of the motor sports fraternity serving on State Council of CAMS, as a Commissioner of the Marque, Touring and Enthusiasts Commission of CAMS and has served as an Official at many Club and State events. Rod served terms as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President of the JCCWA and was the National Rally Director for 2012. Rod has restored seven Jaguars, recently completed building a 1952 replica Jaguar-powered HWM and is currently restoring a 1939 SS Drop Head Coupe. Ken White (JDCA) is the current Treasurer, and has been Chairman and Secretary of the ACJC in previous years. He has been part of the

The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

JDCA for 21 years, serving on their Management Committee for 18 years, including three as President. He was the Rally director for “Sydney Gold 2000”, the National Rally in 2000. Ken has been involved in the social, sporting and Concours sides of their Club, including restoring an XK140 OTS that won the Sir William Lyons Trophy at the 2004 Concours in Canberra and super-sprinting in his XJS. Chris Edwards bought his first Jaguar, a BRG Mk I, when he was just 21 yrs old in Hobart. After moving to Sydney he joined the JDCA as Member No.99, serving on the Committee, and then as President. Since relocating to Tasmania in 1978 to run his own company, he has assisted with events acting as Chief Judge at State and National Concours which, together with sporting events, have always been important to him both as a competitor and an organiser. He has owned, restored and cherished a number of Jaguars since, successfully entering in many Concours and sporting events, particularly at a national level Chris currently drives an XKR. Apart from a number of other classics he has an XK140 roadster, Series 1 E Type and an XJR. Tony Herald (JDCQ) has served on the ACJC for the past two years and previously from 1984 to 1994, much of that period as Secretary/Treasurer. He has been a JDCQ member for 27 years, most of it on Committee in various roles. He was President in 1998-2000 and is again President. Tony was Rally Director for the "2003 Noosa National" and is Director of the 2016 National Rally. Tony has organised many events in the JDCQ including 7 State Display Days and two Jaguar June Jaunts and has had considerable success in Concours with an outright win in the 1995 National, The Jaguar Cars Trophy in 4 National Rallies and outright wins in the JDCQ State Concours 5 times, all with his 1984 XJ-S. Tony is a life member of the JDCQ, is an inaugural member of the JDCHR and was a 10 year member of the JDCA. Peter Holland (JDCSA) has owned and driven Jaguars since 1965. He was elected to the first Committee of the JDCSA at its inaugural meeting in July 1973 and has held various positions on their Committee, including President four times. Peter attended his first National Rally in June 1973 and has attended as many as possible since then, other commitments permitting. His first love has always been the XK Jaguar and he has owned one continuously

21

since 1965. He currently owns an XK120 Roadster along with an X-type, Daimler XJ40, Daimler New Drophead Coupe, Bristol 400 and a Bentley MK 6. Being ACJC Delegate is yet another new Jaguar experience which he looks forward to with enthusiasm. He credits his on-going enthusiasm and participation to the unwavering support of his wife, Ros, who shares a similar passion for the marque and camaraderie of the Jaguar Family. David Jonas has been a member of the JCCV since 1991 and Committee member since 1996. Roles undertaken include New Membership, Public Relations and Dealer Liaison Officer and assistant Sporting Director. Earlier on he was very involved with Light Car Club of Australia as Clerk of Course - Lakeland Hillclimb, Administrator – Sandown and National Rally Championship competitor. He also has served with the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club over ten years including three as Commodore. Some of his Jaguars include 2 Daimler XJ40’s, Sovereign XJ40, X300 XJR and an X-Type 2.5ltr. Larry Roux (JDCC) has been a member of his Club for around 25 years, including holding the position of Vice President for two years from 2006 to 2007 and then President for six years (2008 to 2014). Over this period since 2009 he has also been the ACJC delegate for the JDCC. In preparation for the National Rally in Canberra in 2011 he was also successful in thwarting local challengers to assume the role of National Rally Director. For this period of several years some may say he was fortunate to hold the trifecta of Club positions. Others – including himself - might be less certain. He has fully restored an E Type Jaguar from the bare metal over many years and relished its road registration in 2010. The car has done many Club miles since then. With such a group of people there is an opportunity to draw on their extensive experience to maximise the role of the ACJC, defined as promoting communications and cooperation between the eight major Jaguar Clubs in Australia, acting as the focal point for the relationship between the Australian Clubs and Jaguar Australia, providing a communication channel for matters of interest to all the Australian Clubs and seeking to promote camaraderie between Jaguar enthusiasts. The Cats Giggle Where there is a will there is a way!

An old Italian gentleman lived alone in New Jersey . He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament: Dear Vincent, I am feeling pretty sad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days. Love, Paopa A few days later he received a letter from his son. Dear Papa, Don’t dig up that garden. That’ s where the bodies are buried. Love, Vinnie At 4 a.m. The next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son. Dear Papa, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances. Love you, Vinni

Two Irishmen are travelling to Australia. Before they leave home, one of their dads gives them both a bit of advice: "You watch them Aussie cab drivers. They'll rob you blind. Don't you go paying them what they ask. You haggle." At the Sydney airport, the Irishmen catch a cab to their hotel. When they reach their destination, the cabbie says, "That'll be twenty dollars, thanks." "Oh no you don't! My dad warned me about you. You'll only be getting fifteen dollars from me," says one of the men. "And you'll only be getting fifteen from me too," adds the other.
