Classic Marque Classic Marque is the official magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia. The magazine is produced calendar monthly with the exception of January. The Deadline for all copy is the last Tuesday of each month. The Editor reserves the right to accept, reject or modify content submitted for publication. The opinions/views expressed in published articles are wholly those of the respective authors, and are not necessarily those of Jaguar, the Editor, the Club, or the Members. Advertisers and sponsors who place advertisements in the magazine do so because they value their association with the JDCSA. Placement of these advertisements should not necessarily be taken to mean the club endorses the services offered.
Cover Story The cover photo this month is of Tom Herraman’s 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Coupe. Tom has recounted some of his Jaguar story for us in our regular Member’s Pride section on page 18. 2

Club Torque POOR PHOTOS . . . . Poor car adverts I enjoy spending time on the internet looking at cars for sale. It is the old “just window shopping” exercise. It is always nice to dream. If you do the same you will probably have felt like me at times, amazed at the crumby photography used by people seeking to sell their cars. Really, how hard is it to take a decent photo of your car. Surely if you pay for an ad you want your car to look its best, well you would think so! There are many types of offenders here are just a few. The Shadow Man—He positions the car nicely gets the sun behind the camera and click a lovely silhouette of himself. Do you take another one? No, she’ll be right mate.
The Lazy Bugger—Can’t be stuffed moving the car just shoot where it stands, junk, rubbish in the frame, no worries., Good enough is good enough!
The Animal Lover— A dog strolling past or a cat sitting on the bonnet are considered by some to be great promo shots. The Stalker—This guy has managed to sneak up on the tray top without it being aware he is there and snapped this wonderful shot from about 20 meters. He must be very proud of this photo, enough at least to post it on the internet when trying to sell the ute. 3
The Clever One—Look at me! Look at me! I can take a clever photos of my car. Photos of course that make it so much harder for the purchaser to get any idea about the car without standing on their head.
The Night Watchman—is less common but you can still find them. Are they in a hurry? Maybe the flash did not work? Well get it on the net and hopefully someone will work out what this object is and buy it.
The Clueless Guy— has no idea or just does not care enough to get the photo the right way up. Upside down, sideways, its all the same to him and guess how many hits his ad gets— zero!
The Mobile Shot—that may well have been quite OK except his phone lens has never been cleaned in its life. Another one of those ads that never gets opened and viewed in full.
The bottom line here is that if you are like me, there are many adverts that never even get opened because the front photo is just so poor. The assumption is rightly or wrongly that the presentation and condition of the car will be equally as poor. Presentation is so important when selling a car. But why spend hours getting your car looking magnificent and then use crumby photos to advertise it? Just my two bobs worth for this month. Philip Prior Editor
PLEASE NOTE: If you do have some great shots of your car, send them to Di Adamson so we can consider them for the 2015 club calendar. presdent@jdcsa.com.au

Club Torque PRESIDENT’S REPORT It has been a very busy start to 2014. It was great to see so many Jaguars out on parade at the McLaren Vale Classic and Vintage. We are regularly the largest marque in the event. The weather was very kind to us and the food and company were terrific. As in the past years the funds raised through this event will help the McLaren Vale and Districts War Memorial Hospital with some much needed equipment. On Sunday 27th April several members of our club were very honoured to be invited to display their Jaguars at Carrick Hill as part of the “Celebration of the Motor Car”. The event, organised by Rotary Club of Adelaide was described as a world class exhibition of exotic and prestige cars. Those that attended described it as a great day with good food, terrific entertainment and some spectacular cars on display. The event was very successful and will be repeated in the future
WILL YOU RISK A HEAVY FINE AND CANCELLATION OF YOUR HISTORIC REGISTRATION? Inspection requirements for Historic Registrations have changed as most will be well aware. It is now the owners responsibility to have their historically registered vehicle inspected every three years in addition to the signing of a Statutory Declaration annually. This means that by June 2015 you do need to have your vehicle inspected by one of the club’s authorised inspectors. The inspector will sign your log book to indicate that you have complied with this requirement. This is a very simple inspection and can be done at regular club outings by arrangement with one of our authorised inspectors. Each Register has appointed inspectors and a list is supplied below for your convenience. It will be helpful if this is not left to the last minute putting extra burden on our willing inspectors.
YOUR AUTHORISED INSPECTORS
The Marque Sports Car Association of SA Inc. “M.S.C.A” was formed in the early 70's to give the smaller Sports Car Clubs of South Australia the opportunity to compete at the Mallala Motorsport Racing Circuit and in Motorkhanas and Hillclimbs. With only a low number of members competing from each club, the individual members joined the M.S.C.A., allowing those drivers to compete in their cars. The M.S.C.A. is an association of 16 Clubs with the CAMS affiliation fee being paid by the association. As part of our membership with MSCA several members have raced their Jaguars over the years. This membership also requires each club to assist with marshalling at one race event each year. Our day is the 20th July 2014 and we need between 4 – 6 people to attend and assist with this task. Lunch is provided and I have been told it is the best seat in the house, unless you are in the driver’s seat. We have a few members put their hands up, however we need a few more. If anyone is interested in helping out, please contact Rick Luff. We have a couple of committees getting together and planning over the next couple of months. Geoff and Marg Thomas are heading up the Annual Dinner Dance committee and Phil Prior is heading up our SA JAG Day committee. I would like to thank all the members of these committees for their much appreciated work which give us bigger and better events each year. Hope to see you at the General Meeting.

This thirdgeneration Viewt is built on the K13 March (in the U.S.A. the Nissan Versa), with an upgraded interior and powered by 1.2 to 1.5-litre, petrol en-gines developing 90 to 109 bhp.

Mitsuoka is Japan's 10th biggest carmaker, and almost unknown out-side of Japan. It started in the 1960’s as a repair shop in Toyama, about 250 miles west of Tokyo. In the late 1980s, it expanded into car dealerships. Then it started creating its own body designs using chassis and power trains from other Japanese automakers. Their first ‘special car’, announced in January 1993, was the Mitsuoka Viewt, a blatant copy of the Jaguar MK2, based on the K11 Nissan March chassis, with a 1.0-liter four-cylinder engine. (1. Jaguar News New Museum Collection Centre
Information and photo from THE JAGUAR HERITAGE NEWSLETTER We are pleased to announce plans for a new building on the Gaydon site in Warwickshire which will provide space to store and display more than 200 historic British cars from the reserve collections of both the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust and the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. The £4 million project has been under development for two years and has just been awarded a Round Two grant of £1.45 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The HLF grant, together with match funding from Jaguar Land Rover, The Garfield Weston Foundation and both Trusts, will enable work on this exciting new project to begin in the very near future. The new Museum Collection Centre will enable visitors to view many cars from the reserve collections of both Trusts for the first time in a purpose-built facility. The building will also include a vehicle restoration and conservation work-

shop, space for enhanced education and lifelong learning programmes and office accommodation for all Jaguar Heritage staff – bringing the whole team back together again on the Gaydon site. This exciting new facility will be immediately adjacent to the Heritage Motor Centre museum and it is hoped that it will be fully operational during the first half of 2015. There will be sufficient space to display all the reserve cars from Jaguar Heritage’s collection which will complement the existing Jaguar galleries in the Coventry Transport Museum and the Heritage Motor Centre museum, both of which will continue as they are today. In addition to the large range of Jaguar models in the reserve collection, the building will also allow visitors to see Jaguar Heritage’s extensive collection of over 30 Daimler and Lanchester models, dating from 1897 to 2002 – many of which have not been on public display before.

Jaguar News Rock star's racing Jag found A Jaguar Mk2 prepared for Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and former band manager Steve O’Rourke to race in the 1992 Carrera Panamericana is for sale at £12,000. The 1963 car was retired due to a broken propshaft, reveals vendor Nick Overall of Arun Classics, the West Sussexbased independent Jaguar and performance car specialist. It was later put into storage, not moving for more than 20 years, he adds. “We always mention in our ads that we are lookng for cars with a racing history and received a call from a lady who wanted to sell a Jaguar owned by her late husband,” says Nick. “We saw the bloodgroup writing on the side – a requirement of the Panamericana – and contacted the man who had bought the car from Steve O’Rourke.” The Jaguar was rebuilt with strengthened bodywork, including the driver’s side rear door being welded in, and a heavy duty anti roll bar. All the side glass was replaced with Perspex. A long distance fuel tank, uprated Koni suspension and lightweight pedals are among other modifications. The car needs restoration but comes with a Jaguar 3.8-litre dry sump engine and synchromesh gearbox, and a Heritage Certificate. The Jaguar also has its original registration, 140 JWP. “Once completed, this car must be truly an historic investment. There simply isn’t another one like it.”
Jaguar Land Rover Reports Strong First Qtr. Sales Performance Jaguar Land Rover, the UK's leading manufacturer of premium luxury vehicles delivered a strong sales performance during the first quarter of 2014, selling 124,776vehicles, up 8%. This reflects strong demand for the new and refreshed Jaguar and Land Rover line up which was enhanced during this period by Jaguar's 15MY introductions, the sales debut of the Jaguar F-TYPE coupé and a strong performance from Range Rover Sport. Jaguar Land Rover's regional performance for the quarter was as follows: the China Region up 36%, North America up 13% and Asia Pacific up 13%. The UK and Europe are marginally down due to the market launch timing of special edition models in the corresponding quarter last year.
8
The original Carrera Panamericana was held through Mexico from 1950 to 1954 and was regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous event. The event has been running again since, with classics using some of the original course since d 1998. Steve O’Rourke managed to combine managing one of the word’s best known rock bands with his accomplished racing career. Acknowledgement: ClassicCarsForSale.co,uk Commenting on the quarterly performance Andy Goss, Jaguar Land Rover Group Sales Operations Director said: "This has been a strong start to the year for both brands thanks to continued global demand for our latest model offerings. The F-TYPE Coupe has just been launched to the world's media to critical acclaim and Land Rover are set to reveal a Discovery Vision Concept car at the New York International Auto Show, to showcase Land Rover's design vision for a new family of Discovery vehicles." In the first quarter of 2014, Jaguar sold 24,031 vehicles up 19% with regional performances as follows: the China Region up 49%, North America up 32%, UK up 10% and Asia Pacific up 9%. Europe sales were lower year on year and other overseas markets were up 13%. In March, Jaguar sold 11,731 vehicles up 19%.

Border Run Vicki & Rob have organized the whole event including a run to Victor Harbor on the Saturday, bus tour on Sunday and the Motel and all meals are booked. They have had to pay deposits for the accommodation etc. so participants will be asked to reimburse them in the near future. Members Cars Julian now has brakes on the 120 and the instrument panel has been sent to Strathalbyn for attention by the auto instrument expert there. The wiring loom is only partly installed as the loom he obtained in the distant past did not have the auxiliary looms with it. He intends to have the car running before painting. The engine bay, underneath etc. has already been done. Rob went for a run in Peggy’s 140 and took his 14 year old granddaughter for a ride, it is going very well. Onslow has at last sold the Daimler to a farmer in Inverrell, NSW. He drove it back over 3 days and it ran well. The overdrive gearbox in the 150 seems to be working well. Thanks to Rob Loffler he now has a speedo giving the correct readings. McLaren Vale Vintage Classic 2014 Every year this event seems to be thoroughly enjoyed by those participating. The wide range of vehicles from many South Australian clubs, the magnificent weather, the enthusiastic crowds, good wine and food and great company, what more could you want in a club day outing? Once again Jaguars seemed to be the dominant marque on the day. It was good to see a wide range of models, including—Mark IV, Mark V, XK, Mark I, Mark II, Mark X, 420G, XJ Series I, Series II, Series III, XJC, XJ40, S Type, X Type, X300, X308, XF. Fantastic! After meeting at the Victoria Hotel the cars made their way to Serafino’s Winery where we were joined by others from the club who had made their own way there or had in fact stayed overnight after the dinner the night before. Our allocated winery this year was “The Lazy Ballerina”. Most of us had never visited this winery previously and we were very impressed with the beautiful setting and hospitality. Our thanks go to the organisers of this annual event and we look forward to next year.

The Cat’s Giggle Finally, a smart blonde . . . A blonde walks into a bank in Sydney and asks for the loan officer. She says she's going to Hong Kong on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Mercedes. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank, she has the title and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's manager and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $250,000 Mercedes as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Mercedes into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the blonde returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan office says, "Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a millionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The blonde replies... "Where else in Sydney can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?" WIFE 1.0 JUST RELEASED Dear Tech Support, Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of new space and valuable resources. No mention of this phenomenon was included in the product brochure. In addition, Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programs and launches during system initialisation, where it monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Poker Night 10.3, Drunken Boys Night 2.5 and Saturday Football 5.0 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected. I cannot seem to keep wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run some of my other favourite applications. I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the uninstall does not work on this program. Can you please help me !!!??? Thanks, A Troubled User

purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is not designed to do this. Some have tried to install Girlfriend 8.0 or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than the original system. Look in your manual under “Warnings – Alimony/Child support”. I recommend you keep Wife 1.0 and deal with the situation. I suggest installing background application program C:\YES DEAR to alleviate software augmentation. Having installed Wife 1.0 myself, I might also suggest you read the entire section regarding General Partnership Faults (GPFs). You must assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur, regardless of their cause. The best course of action will be to enter the command C:\APOLOGISE. In any case avoid excessive use of C:\YES DEAR because —————————————————————— ultimately you may have to give the APOLOGISE command before the operating system will return to normal. MEMBER’S PRIDE Stories of cars owned and loved by our members
My Jaguar Story –
May 2014 – E-Type Register – Tom Herraman A: How did you get involved with Jaguars and what was your first model? My first Jaguar was my father’s 1984 XJ6. I purchased it from him around 10 years ago whilst I was living in Berri. I had never liked the car much as he had bought it in 1988 with severe factory paint issues, and a new VN Commodore seemed like a much more practical purchase to me at the time. 15 years later after the car had served it’s time as his business vehicle and been used and abused by my three teenage brothers; it was now surplus to his requirements. The chance to own a cheap and different vehicle seemed like a good idea. Over 18 months I spent many hours reading through the jag-lovers.org website and buying E-bay parts. I finally got the paint job my father had planned on doing for over a decade. Unexpectedly, I had semi-restored the vehicle and now had something very enjoyable to drive. These days, after participating in many family and friend’s weddings (including my own) it is again mostly used by my father as his once a week golf car. However it does sometimes get a run as my “Family Jaguar” due to its back seats and baby seat anchors.
Whilst living in the Riverland I met and became friends with Richard Fewster who keeps a fine collection of Lotus race cars at the Ruston Roses Visitor’s Centre. On a run with the Riverland Car Club, he suggested we switch and I was given the keys to his 1955 Lotus Mk VI. I had two thoughts after this one drive. I wanted something fast, raw, sporting; and I wanted it to be a Jaguar. The E-Type seemed like my perfect car. Q: What other Jaguars have you owned? In a moment of madness I purchased a Series 2 E-Type LHD, 2+2 with Auto transmission. It was bought off E-Bay, sight unseen for a grand total of $13,800. How bad could it be? The car looked great in the photos. Slowly as I stripped away the mechanics, then the paint, and then the filler, I realised there wasn’t actually much car under the shiny “resale red” paint job. I proceeded to restore all of the major components, however, I felt beaten after two years’ worth of bodywork invoices for very little progress. Around this time I also started going to the E-Type Register monthly meeting, normally with lists of questions for those much wiser than myself. Amid the 2+2 body restoration, an E-Type was listed for sale by a JDCSA member. It was a 1966 E-Type Series 1 Coupe, Opalescent Gunmetal Grey, No Radio, No Antenna. All the right boxes were ticked. The sums also added up. 18
My 2+2 E-Type still needed serious investment just to get it back on the road, and here was an E-Type coupe ready for me to drive today for similar money. I took my new wife to lunch and got her ok. The deal was quickly done and the following Wednesday I picked up our new E-Type from Glenelg. My first drive was quite the experience. It was a balmy December night, and as I drove home past Adelaide Airport, I put down the windows and watched the summer lightning. Q: What are your favourite Jaguar driving experiences to date? In 2012 Targa Adelaide gave JDCSA members the opportunity to participate for two days of the Targa Tour. The Wayville night stage track was fantastic. In front of 20,000 spectators I concentrated quite hard to prevent any costly mistakes. It was only later when I viewed the photos I noticed that my co-driver, Rick Luff, spent most of his time waving to the crowd. The Saturday tour covered multiple special closed-road stages in the Adelaide Hills. Having the opportunity to open up an E-Type without limitations was thrilling and an experience that I won’t forget. On one stage I misheard Rick’s navigation and drove in the wrong direction. Like all things these days that moment was captured by a young spectator and lives forever on YouTube.
Q: What are your best memories of your time in the JDCSA? I have attended most of the E-Type register meetings over the last five years. I have really enjoyed meeting E-Type owners from all walks of life. A lot of advice has been given and I hope most of it has sunk in for my future reference. Being part of the club has also opened the doors of some of Adelaide’s best garages. I feel very privileged to have attended E-Type meetings surrounded by beautiful collections of all sorts of motor cars. In 2011 I was involved with the JDCSA E-Type 50th celebrations. A full year of planning was involved and the result was quite spectacular. I drove my car in the parade and remember seeing an XJ13, C-Type and D-Type lined up ahead of my E-Type bonnet. Many of the E-Types in attendance (89 from memory) seem to have disappeared back into their sheds. I don’t think we will see another celebration like that any time soon. Q: How do you keep you Jaguar running well? I have two people who I really need to thank for keeping my E-Type running. Evan Spartalis at The Sports Car Centre has done a lot of work on my car and I have always enjoyed the opportunity to drop in for a chat and to learn something new. Most recently Alan Baker has put in many hours at my

house working on my car. This has given me the opportunity to “work” next to him and take in as much as possible. Recently we removed and replaced the cylinder head after damage caused due to overheating during last year’s Climb to the Eagle. Thanks to Alan, I now understand the basics of setting up the timing on an XK engine. Given the car remained at my house during this time, I was also able to work on it during week nights, cleaning, polishing and painting parts whilst the cylinder head was being refurbished. Maybe with 30 years of practice I’ll be able to restore a ‘61 Roadster in my retirement. Tom Herraman

40th Celebrations What should we do to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the formation of the SS Register? Ross Gogler has been a member of the SS Register since 1983 and lives in Port Lincoln. In the early days he attended register meetings quite regularly. He has a Jaguar Mk IV, which won Gold in the 2007 National Concours held in Adelaide. Bob Kretschmer who has lived in Port Lincoln, together with Ross Gogler (local club member) organised the weekend with help from the Port Lincoln Auto Car Club. Ross & Betty Gogler Jaguar Mk lV Bob & Margaret Kretschmer 1939 SS Jaguar Bruce & Ann Fletcher Jaguar Mk lV Bob & Rosemary Hill-Ling Jaguar Mk V Jack & Jean Richardson Jaguar Mk V Ross & Jan Rasmus Jaguar Mk V DHC Don & Margaret Evans Jaguar Mk 2 John & Judy Caskey Daimler 2.5V8 Peter & Ann Mott Jaguar S type We all met at Wallaroo on Friday 4th April for a 1.30 departure on the ferry to Lucky Bay, Eyre Peninsula. The two hour sailing time seemed a bit too long for three members, even though it was very calm. Port Lincoln is a 170 kms run from Lucky Bay.
The president, Hilton Trigg and 20 members welcomed us on behalf of the Port Lincoln Auto Car Club; we were their guests at a very nice BBQ in the camp kitchen at the caravan park where we were staying. The meal was organised by one of their club members Geoff Phillips brother of Bob Phillips an old SS Register member. We were made very welcome. Saturday morning we visited Ross Gogler’s garages. Ross keeps everything neat and tidy, to the extent that “you could eat your meal off the floor” Before he came down to the garage we visitors put on bright blue hospital shoes and hats. The expression on his face was worth a million dollars, and then it broke into big grin. Together with several local members we had morning tea supplied by Betty. Saturday lunch and afternoon, nothing planned, so members went visiting the sights of Port Lincoln. Dinner was held at the Port Lincoln Hotel, with views over Boston bay. A Mini bus provided the transport to and from 20

Twenty local club members and our cars were displayed next to AutoPro, and we were encouraged to visit the shop. After the display we all drove down the main street and headed to the Hotel at Coffin Bay. At the Hotel all the Jaguars were lined up in an arc. Other classic cars were also displayed. Total of 29 cars.
Dinner that evening was at Del Goirno’s Café. Monday morning we left the caravan park, for morning tea we were invited to Liz & Hilton Trigg’s house. She has two welsh miniature horses which she uses in carriage competition. We all found this to be a very interesting visit. Caught the Ferry from Lucky bay at 4.00pm to Wallaroo, a

very calm trip. All cars travelled with only minor maintenance required. One lady member wanted so badly to join us on this trip, as she had an important function in Adelaide, she flew to Adelaide Saturday afternoon and returned Sunday morning.
Whose cat left its territory markings all over Port Lincoln? Who had cereal breakfast out of a coffee mug? Who managed to get their accommodation upgraded? The rumour is not true they did not carry those cockroaches in a match box from home. Who was the lady who sat up front in the bus and distracted the driver causing him to forget to push the meter button? Who was seen wandering on the wharf looking for his car key prior to driving onto the ferry? Only to find it on the floor of his Jaguar. Was it a mirage or were two people pushing a Jaguar at Coffin Bay? Who has the noisiest Jaguar? A wonderful time was had by all. Jan & Ross Rasmus
TECH FILE Aftermarket Wheels for Your Series I-II-III XJ6 Many XJ6 owners (and XJ-S owners as well) have remarked that they have shopped for aftermarket wheels for their Jag but found virtually no vendors capable of providing any alternatives. As a result it is often felt that there must be something very esoteric about Jaguar wheels. In fact, though, there is little mystery at all to this situation. Firstly, the Jaguar bolt pattern is a very common "5 on 4 3/4". This means five studs on a 4 3/4" circle, a configuration used for generations on many GM cars. Nothing special here, clearly. Now, the unique aspect to Jaguar wheels is the rather large ( about 2 7/8") center hole to accomodate the hubs. This is unusually large and is the sole reason that so few wheel manufacturers offer anything for a Jaguar. So, how do we get around this little Jag anomaly? Easy. Enlarging the center hole is a veritable "walk in the park" for just about any machine shop. Get out the yellow pages and make a couple phone calls and I'm sure you'll have no problem finding a machine shop to do the job. In fact, a tire/wheel store which really specializes in custom wheels will probably already have a relationship with a local machine shop to do this type of work. Piece of cake ! Give 'em your spare wheel to use for measuring purposes. Knowing this you'll see how your wheel choices are now almost unlimited. If you have an XJ6 you'll want a wheel with plenty of positive offset (very little "dish" to the wheel). On my Jag I am using wheels which are actually intended for a front-wheel-drive car. If you're like me and wanted something a bit bigger than Jaguar intended you'll find that a 15x7 alloy wheel with 235/60x15 tires fit perfectly ....but with no room to spare! I am sure the above information applies to the XJ-S models as well, at least up until the point when the rear brakes were moved outboard. Incidentally, many of the XJ-S wheels are especially handsome on an early XJ6. This article has been sourced from http://www.jag-lovers.org/ 21
