Club torque PRESIDENT’S REPORT What a fantastic SA JAG DAY. The weather was beautiful and we had over 145 vehicles on display. I would like to thank the committee of Phil Prior, Steve Arthur, Ron Palmer, Malcolm Adamson, Julian Lugg, Doug Tilley, Bruce Fletcher and Bob Charman for all their work leading up to the event and those that helped on the day with Regalia, Membership and Marshalling. I would also like to thank Rob Loffler, Julian Lugg, Alan Baker, Carl Lindner, Rick Luff and Bruce Fletcher for supplying some of our extraordinary “Vehicles of Special Interest”. Once again Peter Clarke did a fantastic job with commentary during the day and during the Parade. SA Jag Day is constantly improving and bringing variety, new concepts and exciting, interesting vehicles. This in turn brings in the public and promotes the Marque. Next Friday, the 7th November is “John Blanden’s Climb to the Eagle”. We have 27 Jaguars registered for the event, including 14 E Types. Registrations for the event have closed however the Line up of over 200 sporting and collectable vehicles at the Victoria Park Racecourse will be well worth while going along to view. Vehicles will depart the track at 9am travelling up through the hills to the Belair Country Club for morning tea, then onto Nuriootpa for lunch.

Letters to the Editor Good morning, What a wonderful day Sunday was. Thank you once again for allowing Ingle Farm Community Support Services to be a part of your "Jaguar Day". We received 1700 items of food, which has blown me away. We also received $305 in cash/voucher donations. Just amazing. A lot of thought has gone into what your members donated to The Ingle Farm Salvation Army. It is wonderful to see my shelves full again. Coming up to a very needy time of the year, this has eased my burden. Blessings go out to you and your members. I look forward to catching up with you and Sue again. Until then, I wish you, Sue and your family a blessed Christmas. Please pass on my thanks to all your members. New Record Set

SA JAG DAY Yes and why not? It was a great day for the club, one we can all be proud of. Special thanks go to the great committee who organised this years event. Doug Tilley, Julian Lugg, Steve Arthur, Ron Palmer, Malcolm Adamson and Bob Charman. Also to the Register Secretaries who assisted and cooperated in encouraging participation and assisted in the organisation on the day. Once again we valued, Peter Clarke’s major contribution as MC, all those who assisted as marshals, our regalia personnel, David and Margaret Bicknell and “Cat Woman” for her appearance on the day. The line up of special interest vehicles organised by Julian Lugg, was fantastic. A big thank you to the owners of these fabulous vehicles (and power boat) who made the special effort to get their vehicles there on the day. The parking of cars in their respective register groups was well received and facilitated a very orderly presentation of the Jaguar marque for the public who I believe were out in greater numbers this year. Doug Tilley organised our food vendors so that the gastronomic need of members was catered for adequately. The grounds at Brighton Secondary School was a wonderful setting for this event with the shade of the gum trees much appreciated by all.

4

With 145 cars present on the day and more parked in the car park, we have set a new club record. Members are thanked and congratulated for their support of this event which is really the public show case of the club each year.

Our Club Sponsors We are very grateful for the ongoing support we receive from our club sponsors. 

CATS and CANS As evidenced in the letter of appreciation from Ingle Farm Salvation Army, our charity component of this event was a huge success. Collectively we contributed 1700 items of food and other essentials to be distributed to those in need. We can be very pleased and proud of this effort. So, yes, we have every right to brag. Lets look forward to next years Jag Day with anticipation of another great day.. If you would be willing to coordinate next years event or serve on the coordinating committee please speak to our president Di Adamson. Philip Prior Editor (Coordinator—Jag Day Committee)

Vale Digby Thomas "Digby's association with Jaguars goes back to his University days when he purchased his well known SS100 with cycle guards, which for many was his trademark Jaguar. He campaigned the SS regularly in local sporting events. He was well known to, and respected by many Jaguar owners from those very early days. During the the 1970's Digby joined the JDCSA and was a friend to many of our members. He was quietly spoken and always the gentleman. Although he did not attend events on a regular basis, Digby was always more than willing to bring his cars to display at special events. In latter years his D-type replica was a regular display car and he was very generous with his time and often took fellow enthusiasts for a run in this car. Perhaps less known to our members is the fact that Digby had a collection of Jaguar cars and memorabilia, including an E-type, an X300 and a compact. He was a true Jaguar lover. Digby will be missed by many, but never forgotten". We express sympathy to his family and friends on his passing.

Historic Registration – Understanding your Responsibilities Recently I sold a vehicle that I had registered on Historic Registration. The purchaser of the vehicle also wished to place the vehicle on Historic Registration. Being aware that my current registration was not transferrable the purchaser made enquiries at a Service SA centre to clarify some issues. One issue relates to the question as who is eligible to drive a Historically Registered vehicle. Someone other than the registered owner can indeed drive the vehicle but only if the Log Book was signed by the driver. This interpretation was arrived at by citing the following regulation from the Code of Practice for Historic Vehicles. 6.5.7 Vehicle owners must ensure records for each journey undertaken in a conditionally registered vehicle are listed within the log book issued by the recognised motor vehicle club. The date of the journey and a brief description of the journey must be recorded before each journey commences. The driver must also sign the book (next to the particulars of use) before each journey commences. Journeys are limited to no more than 90 days each 12 months in the period of registration. This regulation in the Code of Practice clearly places an onus on the owner to ensure that the log book is correctly completed before the commencement of a journey, and clearly requires the log book to be signed by the driver. This however gives rise to another question. This regulation seems to insist that ‘the driver’, must sign the log book. So what happens if I complete my log book and sign it before commencing a journey and subsequently during that same day another person is required to drive the car? Our best advice is they, as ‘the driver’ also have to now sign the book Now, whilst reviewing the Code of Practice I did learn something that is worth emphasising. I did know that the club had a responsibility to notify the Registrar of nonfinancial members of the club on an annual basis, thereby effectively cancelling that member’s historic registration. However it is also clear from the following regulations, that the club has a responsibility to cancel the log book of a historically registered vehicle when it is sold by a club member.

6

7.3.4 The registration of a conditionally registered vehicle cannot be transferred to another owner, even if the new owner is also eligible for conditional registration. Where a change of ownership occurs, the registration will be cancelled. The log book issued in respect of the vehicle must be cancelled by the club which issued it. 7.3.5 The registered owner of a conditionally registered vehicle may apply to cancel the registration at any time……. (eg when the vehicle is sold)…………The log book issued in respect of the vehicle must be cancelled by the club which issued it. The club requires the owner upon the sale of a historically registered vehicle, to return the log book to the club for cancellation, thus notifying the club of the sale. This responsibility is also clearly implied in the following regulation relating to the owner of a historically register vehicle who wishes to change clubs. 6.5.9 Vehicle owners who change membership from one recognised motor vehicle club to another, must return the log book issued in respect of the vehicle to the issuing club for cancellation. This does happen in most cases, but serves as a reminder to club members. You must send your logbooks to the logbook officer for cancelling when you sell your vehicle, or wish to register the vehicle with another club, or cancel the registration. We can all assist our Secretary by complying more fully with this request each year.

So what can we learn from this? 1.

Be sure you understand your responsibilities in regard to Historic Registration. Try to clarify and check any advice given.

2.

Any legally licensed person other than the registered owner of a Historically Registered vehicle may drive the car, provided the log book is correctly filled out and is signed by the driver.

3.

Upon the disposal of a Historically Registered vehicle the log book must be returned to the club for cancellation. The cancelled logbook is then returned to the owner for record keeping. Philip Prior Editor

Member’s pride “GRACE, SPACE and PACE” - A love Affair with the Mk10 Jaguar I purchased my first MK X in 1998. This car was a 3.8 litre 1963 model - a road worthy car in fair condition it did need a little tidy up here and there, and like all Jaguars is a work in progress. Over the next two years many little mechanical things got fixed. In 2006 I had the car re-trimmed completely and it is now a fine and original example of the fine motor cars that came off the production line in Browns Lane Coventry in 1963. In 1998 I spotted a MK X in a paddock at Evanston Gardens near Gawler and paid the princely sum of $300.00 with view to keeping it for spare parts. At a BBQ and after a few drinks a few friends thought we should see if this old Jag would start. So in went a battery, some water and some fuel. Ahhhh, but on the LHS the fuel came out on our feet as we filled it …never mind. Like all great cars it had two tanks and one would do for our needs. With a little farting around it fired up and to our surprise ran very well for a motor that not turned over for at least three years. No smoke, no rattles, all the lights worked so ………in we hopped, all six of us, and around the paddock we went. The transmission was shot and barely got moving but in second gear it was fine so that was the preferred gear. The hand brake did all the stopping! On we went for a few more hours. All the kids got a ride and it did fantastic doughnuts and a great time was had by all………….. The next day I decided to look over the car a bit more carefully and yes it had the usual rust in the front guards and under fuel tanks, a dent on the FLH guard, a hole in the floor under the accelerator pedal, the brakes were shot, trans stuffed, wood in poor condition, paint all cracked, and the leather and trim all had to be replaced BUT other than that it was all there ………Into the shed it went and twelve months later out it came as good as the day it left Browns Lane.

I only found this out when I put the engine back in after the restoration and was doing all the little fiddly bits. I had run the engine up and the timing chain was too noisy so I set about to tension it and to my surprise there was no manual tensioner!! I rang around and it was Geoff Mockford who had heard of three MK X’s coming into Australia with these “D” type motors, and this was one of them. These engines where fitted with hydraulic top and bottom timing chain tensions for the race engines unlike the standard 3.8’s. The story goes that after the fire at Browns Lane in 1957, Jaguar pushed all the slightly damage motors Trans / Gearboxes and stuff that could be reused off to one side.

Sir William did not like to waste a thing so it was one of these motors that was put into my MK X in the early sixties.

Was it a good Motor ??..... The restoration was about $10k and I did most of it myself with help and advice from several club members. And yes I could have spent thousands more but that’s what I had and that’s what it got.

A very special Engine. This MK X was fitted with a thoroughbred “D” type motor. 10

Yes. I pulled the engine out for a rebuild due to the original head gasket disappointingly letting go after a mere 46 years. This motor stayed on the road for over four years with the help of a once a year dose of Chemi-Weld. During this time I drove to many register events in Pt Lincoln the South East and many many other places, all on the original motor - a true testament to Jaguar engineering. The MK X Jaguar was never the most successful Jaguar

The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

I have owned Jaguar cars since I was 19 years old. I can walk into the shed today and still get a buzz the same as I did with my first Jaguar. I have met so many great people within the club and this has just added to the pleasure of driving one of world’s great motor cars.

Live the dream—“life is not a dress rehearsal……..” Don Tyrrell XJ, MK X and 420G Register member.

made but it was one of the most luxurious cars built by Jaguar. The body shape was basically unchanged from 1962 to 1969. In 1964 it was re-badged to 420G with a few cosmetic changes such as electric windows and chrome strips down the side, but all in all it remained a MK X until it was replaced by the XJ 6 Series One in August 1970. The MK X has been a great car. I have had many great and not so great times with my two MK X’s but as they say, that’s motoring.

Controversy at the Martin O’Dea Memorial Golf Classic. This year’s Classic was won by Steve Arthur’s team of ball shifters, truth benders, and a team lacking of anyone who could add up properly. It was not until after the trophy presentations that we have learnt that one member of his team was actually hitting the ball with the wrong side of her club. This has meant that an official protest has been lodged with the Royal Academy of Golfing Cheats at St Andrews. With all that nastiness put aside, a great day was held on Sunday the 26th at the Glanville par 3. Photos include players at the 1st tee. Notice Daphne’s ball is still on the tee after her 3rd attempt. Also a pic of the winning team (for now). After the golf a lovely afternoon tea was had by all with the odd glass of red or two. It’s funny how our golf improved after a few reds. I think next year we might have to have the afternoon tea before we play. Bob Charman 14

New Emergency Service Speed Zone – Slow to 25km/h Frequently Asked Questions Everything you need to know about the new road rule requiring motorists to slow down to 25km/h when passing through an emergency service speed zone. What’s the new law that has been introduced? When motorists encounter a stationary emergency vehicle that has its blue and red lights flashing, they must slow down to 25km/h when driving through an emergency service speed zone. Is this rule in effect now? Yes, the new road rule came into effect on 1 Sept 2014. What was the rule before? Previously, when motorists encountered a stationary emergency vehicle that had its blue and red lights flashing, the speed limit was 40km/h when passing the vehicle. Why has the speed limit been lowered? The change has been made to better protect volunteers and emergency service staff who are carrying out vital work. When does the speed limit apply? The limit applies when travelling through an ‘emergency service speed zone’, which is when two sets of flashing blue or red lights have been placed at either end of a length of road on which an emergency service vehicle has stopped, or an area of road in the immediate vicinity of an emergency service vehicle that is stopped with blue and red lights

operating. Does the speed limit still apply if I’m on the other side of the road? The speed limit doesn’t apply if a person’s driving on the other side of the road, if that road is divided by a median strip. If there’s no median strip, the limit applies to traffic travelling in both directions. Can I get a fine if I don’t slow down in time? Yes, normal speeding penalties apply for motorists breaking this law. Do I need to slow down to 25km/h if an emergency vehicle drives past me with its lights operating? No, if an emergency vehicle drives past you with its lights flashing, you don’t need to slow down to 25km/h. You do however need to move out of the vehicle’s way as soon as it’s possible to do so safely, so that the vehicle can safely proceed in front of you. What if I’m on a freeway or country road travelling at up to 110km/h, do I still need to lower my speed to 25km/h? Yes the requirement is that you must slow your vehicle to 25km/h when travelling through the emergency services speed zone. What if I turn the corner and come across an emergency vehicle with its lights on, do I have to slam my brakes on until my speed lowers to 25km/h? Isn’t this more dangerous? Again, you are required to slow down to 25km/h. In normal driving, when a driver is confronted with an emergency situation around a bend, such as a vehicle turning or livestock on the road, the response would be to reduce speed and if necessary stop as quickly as possible. It highlights the need for drivers to be alert and always focus on the road ahead because they might be required to take emergency action at any time. What vehicles are classified as an ‘emergency vehicle’? 

STOLEN JAGUAR XKE IS RECOVERED 46 YRS LATER On May 13, 1968, Ivan Schneider’s new Jaguar XKE roadster disappeared from outside his Manhattan apartment. The, then 36-year-old trial lawyer thought he’d lost the car forever. Earlier this month Schneider got a call from a customs agent, telling him his beloved Jaguar had been found in a shipping container in Los Angeles on its way to the Netherlands. From his home in Miami Beach, Mr. Schneider, now 82, discusses his excitement of getting his car back, plans to restore it and finally getting behind the wheel once again. 3D printing could provide solution to parts shortage

ClassicCarsForSale.co.uk. Three-dimension printing technology could provide a solution to the parts shortages experienced by owners of classic cars too rare to justify tooling up for full-scale reproduction. Constant innovation in the technology – including the creation of the world’s first fully driveable 3D car – are helping to make it more useful to classic owners, and UK firms are now suggesting it could be used to produce spares. Francis Galashan, managing director of Retrotech, a 3D modelling company based at Bicester Heritage said: ‘In less

than five years it’ll become viable to print hard to source parts successfully and cheaply. Patents are beginning to expire and consumables associated with the process are becoming cheaper, therefore lowering the manufacturing process.’ The process would enable owners and clubs to print their own replacement items, many of which are becoming harder to find according to clubs not covered by the BMH. Peter Madden, who’s in charge of parts for the Rover P5 Club commentesd: ‘Anything making parts more abundant and cost effective would be welcomed by us and we want to work with new technology to improve supply to our members.’ Not all clubs feel the need for such drastic changes however. Alan Murphy, president of the Pre 50 American Auto Club said: ‘Even for clubs like us finding parts isn’t a problem. I’ve just come back from America with a load of bits for my car. ‘Sourcing stuff in the UK is easy enough as well, sometimes it’s just knowing where to look for parts. Whether some of the parts made in a printer would be strong enough for our American cars is a different story.’ Items as diverse as food, prosthetic limbs and even a fully working car (minus battery, tyres and suspension) have all been created using the 3D printing technique, and last year Classic Car Weekly reported how Kiwi classic fan Ivan Sentch was using 3D printed parts to create a replica of an Aston Martin DB4.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER TAKES OVER PARIS AUTO SHOW WITH TWO GLOBAL DEBUTS PARIS, FRANCE) – October 2, 2014 – Reinforcing its commitment to product development and global expansion, Jaguar Land Rover, the UK’s leading manufacturer of premium vehicles showcased its breakthrough Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jaguar XE models today at the Paris Auto Show.

Land Rover showed off its latest premium compact SUV in its all-new and striking metallic body color, Phoenix Orange, which was showcased using Land Rover’s unique off-road simulator and impressive rain curtain – a natural falling water feature.

Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer, said, “The Jaguar XE and the Land Rover Discovery Sport are at the very heart of the UK’s manufacturing renaissance. Jaguar Land Rover is delivering solid financial results and has good sales momentum globally. Our manufacturing plans around the world and product launch programs are on track, as we deliver vehicles appealing to more customers than ever before.”

Phil Popham, Group Marketing Director, said, “Both the Discovery Sport and XE are exciting developments for Jaguar Land Rover that demonstrate our commitment to continued investment in new models and innovation. Costing from £27,000 for the entry level XE and less than £30,000 for the Discovery Sport, both new models are breakthrough vehicles for Jaguar Land Rover and explore new segments of the market as well as representing a step change in the customer base for both brands.”

The all-new Jaguar XE is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s growth phase and is the first to use the high-tech Ingenium engine – a family of ultra-low-emission, four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines from the new Engine Manufacturing Center, in the British West Midlands.

In addition to the debut of the two new models, both brands unveiled their new luxury good collections in Paris, adding to Jaguar Land Rover’s lifestyle range. Barbour for Land Rover will see two quintessentially British icons launch their first clothing collaboration, ready for Autumn Winter 2014.

With the new Ingenium engine family powering the XE and future Jaguar and Land Rover products, the Engine Manufacturing Center is the result of a $0.8 billion (£0.5 billion) investment, creating 1,400 jobs. This new center brings engine production back to the company’s manufacturing heartland.

Jaguar Heritage ’57 Collection, inspired by Jaguar’s 60th anniversary of the D-Type, features a range of branded goods linked to the winning No.3 vehicle driven by Ron Flockhart and Ivor Beub for the Ecurie Ecosse team. Signature items, including the Jaguar Heritage Leather Jacket and Leather Race Holdall, have been crafted in England and are made from soft, supple Pittards leather.

The introduction of the Land Rover Discovery Sport signifies the first member of the new Discovery family, part of Jaguar Land Rover’s strategy to introduce 50 new products or updates in the next five years. The new Discovery Sport will be built at the award-winning Halewood plant, in the UK, following a multi-million pound investment to support the development of the new Discovery family. This is part of the $5.7 - $6 billion (£3.5 - £3.7 billion) Jaguar Land Rover will invest this year into on-going global capital projects and product creation. 22

Earlier this month Jaguar Land Rover announced a strong sales performance for August, retailing 30,249 vehicles, up 9 percent versus the same period last year. During the first eight months of the year Jaguar Land Rover has sold 304,854 vehicles, up 13 percent
