Club Torque The 50th Annual Jaguar National Rally is underway in Albury/ Wodonga. I wish everyone going safe travel and an enjoyable time meeting up with interstate friends and colleagues. Some members at the National Rally will miss our April general meeting where we have guest speaker Martin Haese. Martin is a former Lord Mayor of Adelaide whose 420G was recently featured in Jaguar World magazine. At our last general meeting Tim White gave an informative presentation on the new club database and how members can access it. The database TidyHQ will be an important part of the membership renewal process this year.
The President’s Rap
Members can efficiently renew their membership online and check their information. Please have a go at accessing the database through our club website and become comfortable using it. Help is available from Tim or other club members if needed. We are planning logbook renewal opportunities at both the June and July general meetings (after you have renewed your membership). Don’t forget your logbook expires (and registration expires) when your membership expires on June 30th so renew early. Our Annual Jaguar Dinner will again be held at the Glenelg Golf Club on Saturday 27th July. Bookings can be done through TidyHQ again following the success last year.
Please begin planning for our 2019 SA Jag Day to be held at Civic Park Modbury on Sunday October 20th. We have a subcommittee already working on making this a great event where we also support the Salvation Army through Cats & Cans. Safe Motoring,

Club Torque Hello all, Welcome back to Classic Marque for another month! As we make the most of the remaining sunshine, the next month presents the perfect opportunity to get the Jag out for one last burst of sunshine before putting up the hood, or tucking it in for the winter season. There are several big events over the next month, including the McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic and the Rock and Roll Rendezvous, so I encourage you to get out and about and enjoy your vehicles!

This issue contains some great photos of members doing exactly that, with a pictorial report of the 2019 All British Day. Bob Charman and the XJ crew also ventured up to Moonta for the annual Show & Shine event, with a number of members joining him in producing an excellent club display. Abroad, excitement is building for the new “MLA” platform developed by Jaguar Land Rover. The platform will be the base for the majority of future Jaguar models including the highlyanticipated J-Pace 7-seat SUV; you can read more about this on page 7.
Don’t forget that this month’s General Meeting guest speaker will be none other than former Lord Mayor - and current 420G owner - Martin Haese! Jaguar J-Pace to arrive in 2021 as flagship SUV Electric rear axle and all-new platform for spacious and dynamic new luxury model Hilton Holloway Autocar Jaguar’s upcoming J-Pace flagship SUV will be one of the first electrified models built on an all-new Jaguar Land Rover platform – and a fully electric version is also likely to be made, according to sources. The J-Pace is thought to be just over two years from launch and will arrive at around the same time as the fifthgeneration Range Rover, which will also be built on the firm’s MLA platform. The JPace is one of three new ‘mid-height’ Jaguar Land Rover models that will be based around electrified powertrains. The MLA platform, which will underpin all JLR vehicles by 2025, will be allaluminium and is expected to be noticeably lighter than the current D7 and D8 architectures. One of the technical highlights for the JPace, which will sit above the EPace and F-Pace in Jaguar’s SUV lineup, will be its electric motor-driven rear wheels. As with all of the MLA-based plug -in hybrids, conventional mechanical allwheel drive is being dropped. Using an electric motor on the back axle provides a number of advantages. Dropping the mechanical connection to the back wheels, including the propshaft and power take-off unit, allows more room for the battery pack and improves space inside the cabin, eliminating the traditional centre tunnel. The electric axle should also make for a significant improvement in handling and during off-road work. The speed and precise, controllable nature of the electric motor’s power delivery should improve on -road handling, especially on corners and poor surfaces, as well as providing very fine control of the torque being fed to the rear wheels when driving off-road. Little has so far emerged about the features offered by the MLA architecture, but it is thought that will change towards the end of this year as new products get closer to launch. The J-Pace is set to come as a plug-in hybrid as standard, with a turbocharged version of the recently announced Ingenium straight-six engine expected to be the mainstream powertrain. Whether JLR engineers think the new MLA platform will allow a refined installation of the Ingenium four-cylinder engine remains unclear, but a high-powered four-cylinder motor may be offered on the J-Pace for a

There’s no official news on the electriconly range of the J-Pace plug-in hybrid, but 50 miles in favourable conditions will be the minimum target. As JLR outlined last year in an investor presentation, it believes new car buyers remain sceptical about pure-battery vehicles, so providing a battery that allows emission-free driving for shorter city journeys could be the best compromise. Jaguar Land Rover predicts that just 20% of new car sales will be of pure EVs by 2025, which is why the ability of the MLA platform to be used with conventional petrol/ diesel, plug-in and pure EV powertrains is essential to safeguarding the company’s future. However, predicting the degree by which the market will swing towards electrification is currently eluding nearly everyone in the auto industry. Jaguar tends not to preview new models with concept cars and has given little away about the J-Pace’s styling. It is, however, likely to build on the distinctive look of the electric I-Pace, which has provided a much-need fresh direction for the Jaguar aesthetic.

Like the recently facelifted XE, the JPace’s interior will feature OLED screens intended to raise the perceived quality of the cabin in order to rival those of flagship German crossovers. The J-Pace is expected to be around 4.9 metres long, and its flat floor should help
it to deliver impressive interior space with a healthy boot volume of at least 650 litres. However, the J-Pace’s expected lower roofline means that it won’t be as airy its Range Rover sister. As Audi engineers have previously explained with the design of the e-tron SUV, a great deal of attention needs to be paid to minimising an EV’s frontal area and reducing overall drag in order to maximise its battery range. Like all car makers, Jaguar Land Rover will have to significantly reduce its fleetaverage fuel consumption and emissions figures over the next decade, as a result of increasingly tough EU targets between now and 2030. According to an investor’s presentation last year, the new mid-height model lineup will consist of two Jaguars and one Range Rover. It’s thought that the Range Rover model will be the new ‘Road Rover’ and that the other is likely to be a Jaguar road car – most probably a pure EV replacement for the ageing XJ limousine, as previously uncovered by Autocar. Last year’s presentation also suggested that four SUVs – Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, new Defender and Discovery Mk6 – will be built using the ‘high-rise’ version of the platform. There will be seven models based on the ‘low-rise’ MLA, potentially including the next F-Pace and Velar, as well as the Discovery Sport and Evoque and – possibly – two Jaguar saloons.

He announced that the Ex-Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Mr Martin Haese, would be the guest speaker at our next General Meeting. Martin is a keen car enthusiast and owns a Jaguar 420G. Vice President’s report Phil Prior announced that this year’s Jag Day will be held at Civic Park and that he would be organizing the event. Sunday the 20th October is now locked in. The marque of the day will be the Mk2. Phil asked the meeting if other makes of cars, owned by our members should be allowed to present on the day and it was approved by the meeting. He also asked if Cats and Cans should stay as is, and again the meeting approved.

President’s Report Julian thanked the membership for their continued support of all Jaguar events with our numbers growing all the time. He singled out the event at Mannum which was two weeks ago and he asked Roland Donders to give a report. Roland wished to thank all those who made the effort to make the coffee and cars day a very successful day with 22 Jaguars on show and 101 cars in total. Mannum to make it a regular event on the last Sunday of each month. Julian spoke about the upcoming National Rally in Albury-Wodonga which several of our members attending.
Log Book Officer Dave reported all quiet at the moment. We are reducing the number of inspecting officers that we have as inspections are no longer required. He asked that they be thanked in some way for the amount of time and effort they have put in. Meeting agreed. A.C.J.C. Tim reported that Jaguar have retrenched nearly 4000 people worldwide to make up for huge losses. Looking to see if this could affect Australia as well. A few computer problems to sort out as well.

XJ Register at the Moonta Show & Shine
On Saturday the 9th of March, 14 members of the XJ Register headed to Moonta for their annual “Show and Shine� held on the Main Oval on the Sunday. There were 130 cars on display with many vehicles in better-than-new condition - quite a few being trailered into position. Our gang made the most of the beautiful five bedroom house and a B.B.Q. tea was held after the Sunday event with some friends and even some local car club members joining us for a meal And a chat.

This was the third year that we have attended the Moonta event and we would love to see other Jaguar Club members take advantage of the long week end to show off their cars and join In the fun. This month, the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia welcomes former Lord Mayor and special guest Martin Haese to present at our April General Meeting. Adelaide; A city of motoring firsts Join former Lord Mayor Martin Haese to discuss his passions for Adelaide, historic motoring and Jaguars.
Martin Haese is an entrepreneur, educator, public figure and strong advocate for Adelaide’s standing as one of the world’s most liveable cities. He founded a national retail chain, managed Rundle Mall and in 2014 was directly elected as the 78th Lord Mayor of Adelaide; a position he held until November 2018. Martin has had a lifelong interest in classic motoring and is a former Chairman of the Bay to Birdwood committee. He has owned several Jaguars over the years and currently drives a pristine 1967 Jaguar 420G. Martin is the Chairman of the Premier’s Climate Change Council and commences as CEO of Business SA in May 2019.
