Club Torque The President’s Rap Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.

We are also grateful to a number of sponsors for their generosity in helping to offset some of the costs.

Our National Rally seems very close now and is being held April 12th – 20th . If you have not yet entered then please go to the website http:// www.jaguarnationalrally201 8.com/registration

We hope that a large number of club members will participate in many or all of the activities planned. Interstate registrations are very promising at this stage.

We have attempted to put together a National Rally that keeps costs down, provides enjoyment and enables people to choose what activities they wish to participate in. There is a registration fee per family/car entry to offset some of our costs keeping many of our activities to a lower price (e.g. the display day at the National Motor Museum, Birdwood).

The main focus for our club over the next couple of months will be to finalise details of the National Rally. Registers will assist by taking on some responsibility for specific activities.

held in the near future. We expect a large club representation at All British Day in February. Thank you to all those members who are actively involved in planning, organising and coordinating activities for our club. Active involvement by members makes us a strong club. Please consider participating in the Jaguar National Rally 2018.

The Editor’s ride in a Bugatti!

Sometimes, in my OTHER job at the National Motor Museum, I get to do some fairly special things; this was certainly one of them. I assisted in the delivery of a new item to the Museum’s collection - a $2.5M Bugatti Veyron the only one of its kind in Australia. And I got to for a drive in it, from Eagle on the Hill to Littlehampton. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it! And yes, it’s extremely fast.

Next Jaguar F-Type to go all-electric In a radical move, Jaguar’s iconic two-door sports car will soon do without an engine. Toby Hagon, Wheels A top-secret project currently underway at the brand’s design and engineering centre in Gaydon will see petrol engines dropped altogether for the radical all-electric Jaguar F -Type replacement due as early as 2021 or 2022. Despite the lack of internal combustion, the futuristic Jaguar two-door sports car will be the fastest car ever to wear the leaper badge courtesy of electric motors and a bespoke new architecture tailored to take advantage of the design freedoms offered when a traditional drive train is not part of the equation. The bold decision to drop petrol engines is in line with Jaguar Land Rover’s promise of ensuring every model features some form of electrification by 2020. It’s that promise that also prompted the board-level decision to scrap traditional drivetrains altogether for a next-gen sports car, in the process sidestepping the halfwayhouse trend towards hybrid propulsion. While JLR chief Ralf Speth has admitted internal combustion engines will be around for a long time yet, it’s understood he saw too many compromises in designing a compact sports car to accommodate bulky internal combustion engines as well as electric motors and batteries. The move to target the heartland of Jaguar – sports cars – is also a bold step to separate Jaguar from its predominantly German competition by taking a leading position with a flagship EV performance car. Jaguar already flagged its sports car intentions with a classic E-Type engineered with electric motors and batteries. Combined with the early -2017 announcement of the Jaguar i-Pace electric SUV, it was that electric E-Type that prompted a months-long Wheels investigation that unearthed the top-secret project. Sources closely aligned with the program have confirmed the company is deep in development of the all-electric F-Type replacement, which could get a different name to signify its leap from tradition to cutting-edge EV technology.

Above: A Wheels illustration of what the next generation F-Type could look like. The all-electric sports car is being developed alongside the i-Pace, Jaguar’s all -electric SUV due on sale in 2018. It uses two electric motors and a 90kWh lithiumion battery pack that can reach 80 percent charge in 90 minutes. As with Teslas, acceleration will be a big part of the i-Pace sales pitch, with the SUV claimed to be able to hit 100km/h in four seconds. But the new F-Type will boost that performance further, with a line-up likely to include rear -drive and all-paw variants. Entry-level cars will stick with a rear-drive setup, while more expensive models will run electric motors at both ends, delivering drive to front and rear wheels. It’s the AWD version that aims to reset the twoseater performance benchmark for Jaguar, with early internal targets nominating a sub-3.0 second 0-100km/h time. While engineers are excited by the relatively easy performance promised by electric motors, developing the personality of the car will rely heavily on the design team, led by former Aston Martin and HSV styling chief Ian Callum.

THE BOTTOM LINE

While there will be lessons learned from the i-Pace, the all-new electric sports coupe will sit on a unique architecture tailored to a sports car featuring a low seating position. Those sporty requirements have so far challenged Callum and his team – especially with the inherent focus on light weight – and mean the car will be a vast visual leap from the FType, the XK and the E-Type, each of which

had a prodigious bonnet to house V8 and/or V12 engines. Key to the design will be new generation lithium-ion batteries, currently under development in conjunction with the University of Warwick. The batteries promise almost double the energy density of current automotive cells, so as well as a 500km-plus range and fast charging capability, they will be significantly smaller and lighter than the batteries we know today. However, the battery pack will still be one of the heaviest components of the 2021 F-Type, running into hundreds of kilograms. It will therefore be incorporated low in the body, possibly utilising the centre tunnel that would have previously been used for the transmission. As a result, the long snout will disappear; expect more of a midengined flavour, with a stubby bonnet and elongated tail and a car that is closer to a 50/50 weight distribution. While there are challenges in revolutionising the classic Jaguar sports car shape, starting from a clean-sheet design means Jaguar does not have to compromise the packaging or structure of the 2021 F-Type. The lack of a traditional drivetrain also allows for more interior space and some innovative packaging – check out the interior of the Range Rover Velar to see how far JLR is pushing cabin design – raising the possibility of the return of a 2+2 seating configuration, something that is yet to be decided at Gaydon.

E-PACE targets new brand of buyer Young AND aspirational – they're a far cry from the Jaguar buyers of yore... Ken Gratton, Motoring.com.au What the XE began, and has evolved through the F-PACE, will shortly enter a new phase following the local introduction of the Jaguar E-PACE in March; it’s the reinvention of the Jaguar brand. Illustrating precisely what that means, you won’t find any woodgrain veneers in the E-PACE, and that says it all about the new SUV – a vehicle that expands Jaguar’s reach into a more costconscious sector of the market. “They’re not really going after the oldworld market with this car,” says James Scrimshaw, Product Public Affairs Manager for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Australia. “There’s a bunch of people that don’t like the old Jags, but they like the FTYPE, and the XE… and they’ll like this car as well. “It’s going to be a different market, a younger market [for E-PACE].” The E-PACE will bring the traditional Jaguar buyer down into the 20s or 30s. To do so, the new SUV will take a multipronged approach – an approach involving everything from pricing and specification to design and marketing. As an example, there’ll be no premium asked for diesel with the E-PACE, and in fact, the entry-level model will be a diesel. “That is the pricing around the world; the pricing structure and the way it’s set up…” says Scrimshaw, “Diesel’s going to be the cheapest entry point…” Put to him that the mid-spec diesel

Above: Jaguar is targeting younger buyers with the new E-PACE [Jaguar Media]. D180 will be the volume selling E-PACE powertrain variant in Australia, Scrimshaw replies: “That’s what the UK thinks.” But he’s uncertain that will necessarily hold true in Australia, simply saying that JLR needs three months of sales to be able to draw conclusions. “Until people start test driving the car, and we see what the customers want… we don’t know. We have it all available.” Scrimshaw believes that Australian EPACE buyers might be willing to spend more than typical British buyers to obtain exactly the car they want – and that could mean the volume seller here is a markedly ‘richer’ model than its counterpart in the UK. “We do fairly well on high-spec engines…” The First Edition models will provide initial sales impetus, but the E-PACE will need to sustain sales beyond that preliminary surge. Jaguar anticipates

the E-PACE will have to wrest sales off the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X1/X2, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 in the longer term to succeed. “[Mercedes’] GLC is globally what the target is… XC40, X2, X1 and Q3 are the only [other] cars that have been mentioned. “There would definitely be more… but they basically gave us the main consideration set, probably based on what the forecast [sales] volume is.” Unfortunately, any talk predictions is off the table.

of

sales

“Not allowed to talk about that, but it will be our biggest selling car. F-PACE was, but [the E-PACE] will outdo that, because it starts at half the price,” says Scrimshaw. If sales of the F-PACE hold steady in 2018, the E-PACE will have to sell at least 100 units a month in Australia to

Multi-Valve Register Australia Day BBQ On Australia Day, the Multi-Valve Register enjoyed a Bar-B-Q lunch at the River side home of Bill Browne and Margaret Piper on Hindmarsh Island. 26 Members joined Bill and Margaret for a happy and enjoyable afternoon on a quite warm and humid day. Des Brown cooked up an excellent barbie out under a shade tent, ably helped by Jim Komaromi and yours truly. Needless to say there was very little left at the end of the day, a testament to Des’ cooking skills. It was, at times a noisy mob, but everyone had a great time and enjoyed the friendship which these events foster. A short meeting was held near the end to discuss possible future events later in the year. On behalf of the Multi-Valve Register I would like to say a big thank you to Bill and Margaret, for inviting us all to their home for the Australia Day Bar-B-Q.
