Classic Marque Classic Marque is the official magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia. The opinions/views expressed in published articles are wholly those of the respective authors, and are not necessarily those of Jaguar, the Editor, the Club, or its members. Advertisers and sponsors who place advertisements in the magazine do so because they value their association with the JDCSA. Placement of these advertisements should not necessarily be taken to mean the Club endorses the services offered.

Club Torque The President’s Rap Early in June Moira & I had the opportunity to attend the Formula E motor racing in Berlin. We caught up with our son Mike who is the Race Engineer in the DS Virgin Racing Formula E team and it great to see their team perform well. It was an exciting event with the racing cars making a very different noise from Formula 1. The cars use cutting edge technology that should have spin offs for every day motoring. Jaguar have also recently entered cars in this Formula E category (pictured, right).

club on their 40th anniversary run where we had approximately a dozen JDCSA club members participating. It was a great day for the drive to Tarlee. The next major club event is the Annual Dinner on 29th July and I encourage all club members to purchase their tickets as soon as possible for this great event. Our annual SA Jag Day is on Sunday 15th October at Brighton Secondary School and I invite all club members to participate by bringing their vehicles along (any condition is welcome).

Please keep in mind the dates April 12th – 20th 2018 for the Jaguar National Rally – it looks like being an exciting event not to be missed. It will also incorporate a national gathering of XKs from across Australia. I hope all SA XKs are able to be involved!

Julian

We were saddened to hear that club members Ben Adler and Roy Malandain had passed away – we wish their families our condolences. Both Ben and Roy had been members of the XJ register. Congratulations to Dane & Geoff Wilden on their “Shitbox Rally” achievements travelling from Adelaide to Cairns raising money for the Cancer Council. Congratulations also to the Barossa Valley Historical Vehicle

Club Torque Hello again, As many of you are no doubt aware, my father Geoff and I have just returned from participating in the 2017 Shitbox Rally. The rally was a great success for the Cancer Council of Australia, and you can read more about this in the report on pages 1417. I’d like to thank the JDCSA and its members for their support and donations once again this year. As a result of my recent travels, this magazine is a little behind publishing schedule. I apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, but I’m sure you can understand! This magazine is once again full of information, with the most important article concerning the newly rebranded “Club

Editor’s Column

Registration” scheme (formally colloquially referred to as “Historic Registration). Information and facts can be found in the article on page 6. Eagle-eyed readers may note that the majority of the article appearing in this edition were written by yours truly. I’d like to once again encourage members to submit articles on anything that takes your fancy, to ensure that this magazine is catered to its target audience - you! Give me stories of your first Jag, info about your current vehicle, anecdotes about that wonderful driving holiday you just returned from anything you think that might be remotely interesting! Further, I wholeheartedly welcome letters to the Editor with suggestions about what you’d like to see in this

magazine. Give me your ideas, and hopefully, I might be able to turn them into reality! There has been ongoing discussion regarding the future of “snail mail” subscriptions of Classic Marque. These discussion are part of routine budget reviews. I wish to ensure readers that no one on the postal list will be removed without prior consultation and discussion about what delivery format best suits your needs. If you have any concerns regarding this ongoing review process, I can be contacted via email at any time. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this edition. Happy motoring!

IN MEMORIUM

KLAUS BERND ADLER (BEN) 3/12/1941-9/6/2017 Ben was born on the 3rd of December 1941 in Germany to Friedrich and Irene Adler.

However, this did not stop him, and he lived a full life, but succumbed to the disease on 9th of June 2017 at the RAH.

The family survived the war years, and after the school years, Ben was drafted into German Army in April ’62 and released in March ’64, attaining the rank of Corporal.

Ben was diagnosed with Leukaemia some four years ago, and was only given 6 months to live.

Ben moved to South Africa in the late 60’s, where he met his wife Brenda and step daughter Alanna. Ben made the local papers in ‘74, when he rescued a sailor from drowning in difficult circumstances, who fell overboard, and received an elaborate barometer, which was engraved with his heroic deed. The Family moved to Australia in 1978, but unfortunately Brenda passed away in 1994. Ben worked for Mitsubishi, at the Engine plant in Lonsdale, and later as a supervisor in the paint shop at Tonsley. Ben was active in Union matters and represented the workforce. He retired in 2004. He loved fishing and spent a lot of time at his house on the

Ben was taking part at this time in a first-off trial to arrest his disease, but unfortunately it didn’t work on him. Murray River, which he built himself with friends. Ben used to be a regular at the Tower Hotel, and also joined the Magill RSL in Oct 2004. Except for a short break, he remained a member until his death. He was an active member of the Jaguar Drivers club and owned a number of Jags, including a red E Type, which he partially restored. He also joined the Mercedes Club, and was the proud owner of a convertible SL 380. THE BOTTOM LINE

A Celebration of His Life was held at the Magill RSL on 24/6/17, and was attended by step-daughter Alanna and family, friends, RSL Members and Jaguar Drivers Club and Mercedes Club Members. A table of memorabilia was displayed at the function, including the barometer and paper clipping of the rescue mentioned above. His ashes will be scattered in the River Murray as he wished. The Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia wishes to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Ben Adler during this difficult time.

“Club Registration - A New Era Dane Wilden Classic Marque

What does this mean for me?

Changes to the registration requirements for historic vehicles aim to simplify the application process, and allow a greater number of enthusiasts to take advantage of reduced registration costs, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Stephen Mullighan says. In what can be described as the biggest win for South Australian motoring enthusiasts in the past two decades, any vehicle manufactured over 30 years ago, based on a continually rolling date, will now be eligible for club registration. Further, mechanical and aesthetic modifications to vehicles will no longer prevent access to the club registration scheme. The changes to the club registration scheme are long overdue, and Minister Mullighan must be congratulated for his concerted approach to overhauling the scheme, in close consultation with motoring clubs and associations. The new scheme accounts for a greater proportion of South Australian motoring enthusiasts, and relaxation of the rules surrounding vehicle modification enables owners to alter aspects of their vehicles according to their taste, instead of being restricted by strict conditions. From a club perspective, it is hoped that the new requirements for club registration will increase eligibility for the scheme, in turn increasing public interest in joining a motoring club. The Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia welcomes the new club registration scheme, and encourages members and the general public to register their vehicle through their local motoring club. Enquiries regarding club registration can be made to our Registration and Log Book Officer David Burton, whose details can be found in the club directory on page 2.

The scheme is now known as Club Registration; a 90 day conditional registration scheme for Historic, Left Hand Drive and Street Rod Vehicles. Vehicles will no longer need to be inspected by clubs prior to approval (MR334) being granted, although individual clubs are free to impose their own inspection requirements. Vehicles not previously registered in SA (or previously SA registered vehicles not able to be located on historical records) may still need a departmental identity inspection prior to registration. Year of eligibility will be a rolling 30 years from 1 January of each year. For example, all vehicles built in 1987 will be eligible from 1 July 2017 when the changes take effect. Vehicles built in 1988 will become eligible on 1 January 2018. The year of eligibility will be calculated from the date of manufacture, not compliance. Vehicles will be permitted to be modified and still be eligible to be registered on Club Registration. Modifications must be in line with the requirements in the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous) Regulations THE BOTTOM LINE 2014 particularly Regulation 53. Clubs are not required to confirm if modifications meet with the regulations or if an exemption has been issued, this is the responsibility of the vehicle owner. This includes Street Rod

vehicles. Left hand drive (LHD) vehicles will be permitted to be modified and still be registered in SA. All LHD vehicles will still require a L H D ex e mp t i o n p r io r t o registration, this document may need to include specific references to modifications if the vehicle is modified outside of the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous) Regulations 2014, particularly Regulation 53. Left Hand Drives already issued an exemption certificate and planning to make modifications (minor or major) will need to contact Vehicle Standards on 1300 882 248 to discuss. They will need a new exemption issued in either instance. All authorised clubs will be permitted to approve any type of vehicle (Historic, LHD or Street Rod) for registration. Log books will still need to be replaced every three years. The log book will be redesigned in the coming months. There is no longer a requirement to stamp registration papers. This applies to first registration and subsequent renewals. A new Code of Practice has been published, and is available online at https://www.sa.gov.au/__data/ assets/pdf_file/0017/10439/ClubRegistration-Code-of-Practice-1July-2017.pdf Information courtesy Federation of Historic Motoring Clubs SA Inc.

He only just made it to his car unharmed. Previous Minutes Approved General Business  Historic registration to come into force on the 1st of July has been approved by our Executive.

2017 SHITB Dane Wilden, Classic Marque

Y

ou know what they say; third time’s the charm. So why is it, then, that on our third Shitbox Rally (2013, 2014, and now 2017), I found myself standing at the side of the road, 25km from the start line in Adelaide, with a flat tyre? This year, the 2017 Shitbox Rally departed Adelaide, bound for Cairns; between us, 3,800km of the toughest Australian outback roads, all to be completed in our Rally-veteran Volvo 240 wagon. She’s been with us since the beginning, and still surprises us every day with her willingness to just keep on going. That is, when she doesn’t have a flat tyre... The Rally is the Cancer Council of Australia’s biggest fundraiser, and with the continuing support of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia, Dad and I are proud to have contributed over $18,000 towards vital research into a disease that touches so many.

THE

This year’s route was particularly challenging, for both vehicles and drivers. A complex combination of some of Australia’s best known highways and challenging bush tracks saw the highest number of vehicle losses in rally history, including several support vehicles. Teams travelled from Adelaide to Roxby Downs, Oodnadatta, Alice Springs, BOTTOM LINETobermorey, the Burke and Wills Roadhouse, Einasleigh, before finally arriving in Cairns seven days later. Along the way, friendships were forged, vehicles pushed to their limits, and a huge amount of money raised for a very worthy cause.

BOX RALLY

Day one saw departure from the Torrens Parade grounds in the city, bound for Roxby Downs. A large contingent of JDCSA club members attended to see us off, and their support was very much appreciated. We had anticipated an easy day’s driving to Roxby, and the trip north was mostly uneventful, with the exception of that ridiculous flat tyre! The culprit? A tek-screw, probably picked up from the parade ground somewhere. Despite a relatively easy drive, a number of vehicles required mechanical attention in Roxby - they were shitboxes, after all. Perhaps one of the most creative fixes was the use of several pairs of thongs to construct a cushion between the bump stop and the top of a (failed) hydraulic suspension bag on an Austin Tasman. A Fiat X1/9, which eventually succumbed to terminal carburettor troubles later in the week, burnt out its alternator the first day, resulting in some creative engineering by mechanics to shoehorn a VK THE BOTTOM Commodore alternator into the tiny, mid-engine sports car.

LINE

Day two saw the start of the Oodnadatta Track, and our second blow-out (pictured right). The track was rough, and covered in sharp, shale-like rocks,

resulting in an unprecedented number of punctures - one team blew five tyres in one day! Dinner at the Oodnadatta Racing Club was a genuine country affair, with the hospitality and generosity of the locals a highlight of the trip. Day three saw a trouble-free run into Alice Springs, with the second half of the Track in excellent condition. With no mechanical issues, our team was the first to arrive in Alice Springs. Day four was “Trump Day”, with hundreds of Trump look-alikes (and an equal measure of Mexicans) seen moving towards the NT border. Silly hair, cheap suits, and orange face paint ensured we looked as good as Don himself (previous page). From Alice we took the Plenty Highway to Tobermorey Station, on the NT/QLD border. The track was extremely rough, and featured hundreds of “washouts” dry creek beds, which were often deceivingly steep. Consequently, mechanics were kept

busy repairing damaged sumps, with a number of cars declared dead at Tobermorey. One of the more creative sump repairs involved a visit to the local dump, and a kitchen sink. The bowl of the sink was cut out, and crudely welded to the remains of a damaged sump; sure enough, the repair held for the rest of the rally. The following day, we entered outback Queensland, and spent the night at the Burke and Wills Outback Pub. Hundreds crowded around a small television to catch the rugby, including a motley crew of road-train drivers, who seemed to enjoy the unexpected company. Overnight, another Volvo 240

(not ours!) had been declared, after breaking an axle while crossing a washout - exactly how this happened, we don’t exactly know, suffice to say they must’ve been travelling reasonably quickly. An old Corolla had inadvertently overheated so badly it blew a welsh plug out and warped its head; thinking outside of the square, the head was glued up, and a new welsh plug fashioned from a tent peg welded to a 5c piece - good as new! A long day’s drive on the tarmac saw us arrive in the tiny highland town of Einasleigh. Again, the locals put on a wonderful feed for the hungry hoards, and an “empty your esky” party resulted in a few sore heads the next morning. Thankfully, the final drive into Cairns the following day was comparatively short (300kms), through the fog, rain, and spectacular scenery of the QLD highlands (bottom left). Relief was felt by all following arrival at the Hilton Cairns, with a cold beer being the first order of business, very closely followed by a long shower. The following day, the auction of vehicles at the Cairns Showground raised even more money for the cause (yes, we purchased our old girl back again, for the third time!). Over 150 vehicles were auctioned, selling to backpackers, families looking for a cheap runaround, and spare parts wreckers (seen below). Back at the Hilton, it was announced at the post-rally party that the 2017 Shitbox Rally had set a new record for the total funds raised. Cheers and applause erupted as we found at this year’s rally raised $1.66 million for cancer research! I’m delighted to announce that with the assistance of the Jaguar Drivers Club of SA, our team raised a total of over $6,000! Dad and I are so thankful for the support that we have received, and delighted to be apart of fundraising for such a worthy cause. We’d like to thank everyone who supported us this year, with a special thanks to the JDCSA. The 2018 route has been announced as Brisbane to Darwin. Who’s up for a short drive, then?
