Club Torque The President’s Rap At the recent AGM the 2017/2018 Executive Committee was elected. Congratulations to new register secretaries David & Angela Rogers (Compact) and Peter & Heather Buck (Multivalve). Thank you to retiring register secretaries Tim White and Ron Palmer. The other executive committee members were re-elected. Thank you also to the many members of the club who support us by taking on other roles. Their work is much appreciated and I am pleased they wish to continue in these roles for the next year.

Above:

Thank you for the honour of Moira and I being awarded life membership of the club for our involvement since 1973. Thanks to Tom Herraman and Bob Underwood for organising a very successful evening at the Sporting Car Club to see Goodwood Revival 2017. It was a very enjoyable evening and I understand that a repeat next year is being considered. Over the next month or two there are many motoring events for members to be involved in. One

of these is SA Jag Day at Brighton Secondary School on Sunday October 15th where we hope to see as many Jaguars (and Daimlers) as possible come along. I hope to see you there. Regards,

Julian

President Julian goes for a ride in an 1898 Benz (pre-Mercedes!), one of the oldest vehicles in Australia, at the XK & Mk7/8/9 register meeting on Sunday 10th September.

Club Torque Hello once again, I’m delighted to resume my seat at the Editor’s desk for another term as your roving reporter. Roving is something I’ve been doing quite a bit of recently you can catch some happy snaps from my travels through Clare in a 1909 Gregoire in the Ed.’s Inbox. This issue of Classic Marque features comprehensive reports from the 2017 JDCSA AGM held in September, as well as accounts of register runs, a young member’s newfound

love of her classic Series II XJ6 (with the help of her Dad and our very own Bob Charman!), and a recordsetting D-Type.

section on the right, and a sample of the auction listing (complete with more stunning photographs) further on in this issue.

Speaking of which, what an absolute stunner! Punters are betting on the Australianbased D-Type smashing all Australian auction records when it hits the block at Melbourne’s Motorclassic auction in mid-October. Auctioneers Mossgreen (also responsible for the sale of the late Clem Smith’s collection) anticipate international interest in the sale. Find a short piece on it in our news

I hope you enjoy this new issue, and ask that you consult your GP and seriously consider the health consequences before selling a kidney in the hope of parking that D-Type in your garage... Happy motoring,

Dane

D-Type set to become the most expensive car sold in Australia Rare post-war Jaguar road racer, formerly owned by Duncan Hamilton, expected to smash an Australian auction record during Melbourne Motorclassica Auction in October

Callum Godde Australian Associated Press A rare post-war Jaguar road racer is expected to smash an Australian auction record and become the nation's most expensive car. The 1955 British racing green Jaguar DType, the only model of its kind in Australia, could sell for up to $8 million at Melbourne's Motorclassica Auction in October, valuers say.

Another Jaguar D-Type, winner of the 1965 Le Mans endurance race, sold for $US21.78 million ($A27.6m) in the US last year - the highest auction bounty in history for a British-produced car. The Australian-based 3.4-litre six-cylinder will go under the hammer at Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building on October 14.

This particular XKD510 chassis has a storied history. Over the years, it has been owned by several well-known collectors including former Le Mans champion Duncan Hamilton It has raced around the world - as well as Australia in the late 1960s - and more recently been displayed at England's Donington Museum. “Along with impeccable provenance and competition history, the D-Type is gorgeous, an absolute work of art, a sculpture on wheels, one of the most beautiful cars ever made,” Mossgreen auction house boss Paul Sumner said on Tuesday.

THE BOTTOM LINE

It's the most valuable car to ever go to public auction in Australia, and no doubt will set new records on auction night.”

A Word From The Patron I would like to thank you, the members of our Club, for your vote of confidence in approving my nomination to be Patron of the JDCSA. In addition, I would also like to thank those who put the nomination forward and the assessment group and committee for recommending the nomination. In addition, I would like to make special mention of our retiring patron, Ian Webber, who has done a marvellous job over the past five years. Ian was a great mentor to me during my time as President and continued to be so to the following Presidents. He was always willing to make himself available for the Club and to help and advise whenever necessary. Ian soon became a very good friend to me and many others within the Club. Thank you Ian. It was early July when I received a call from Julian asking if we could catch up for a coffee, which the four of us did-----Ros, Moira, Julian and I. Naturally, I thought the conversation was going to about XK120’s with mine under restoration and Julian’s recently completed. We did talk XK’s for a while and other things Jaguar, but then came the big question! To be asked to be Patron came as a total and unexpected surprise, as this had never been an ambition of mine. After some reflection, I agreed to the nomination, as this was indeed a great honour which I will always cherish. I am not sure what my role will be, as I believe this will be defined by us all over time. I would hope it can be a little more than the traditional figurehead image that patron so often portrays in the wider world. My desire is to see the Club continue to grow and mature to meet the needs of all Jaguar owners or aspiring owners, whether they own a classic Jaguar or a modern Jaguar just off the showroom floor. It is important that the Club plans for the future to find ways to maintain and grow the membership. Like Jaguar itself, which now actively targets a younger group of potential buyers (with F-Pace, XE, E-Pace and the yet to be released I-Pace, for example), we too must also follow a similar approach. It is comforting to see that the committee is taking a very active approach to new membership and I am sure it will pay dividends in the long run. If, additionally, ideas for future development can be actively explored and nurtured through the ACJC, then the JDCSA and our fellow clubs around the nation will be assured of long term survival. I encourage members to talk to me if you have ideas on how you would like to see the Club continue evolving, if you are worried about any part of the Club’s performance and what you believe the Patron could or should do for the Club. There will be probably be many other areas that you will think about. As they say my door is always open! The Patron’s role is essentially passive and non-political, as it should be, but the incumbent can be in the unique position to be able to listen to ideas and I believe able to talk with the President, in particular, at arm’s length about matters that will determine the wellbeing of the Club. Again, thank you to you all for your support and I look forward to serving the Club as your Patron. With kind regards,

Club Torque Jaguar Drivers Club of SA 2017 Annual General Meeting 5th September 2017 Meeting Open: 8:25 pm Welcome: President Julian Lugg welcomed all, including past Patron Ian Webber and current Patron Peter Holland Present: Fifty two members and one guest as per attendance list Apologies: D Burton, Peter & Heather Buck, Barry and Hazel Brown, Tony Human, Gabriella Orford, Bruce Fielder, Paul Moore, Moira Lugg, Sue and Doug Harrison, Trish Clarke Minutes Of Previous Meeting: 18 Jul 2017. Approved as included in Classic Marque. Business Arising: Nil Patron: Presentation President Julian thanked Ian Webber for his five year service and presented him with an appropriate certificate and gift from the club. Ian commended the club and thanked members for the opportunity Our new Patron Peter Holland was presented with his Patron’s name plaque by Ian Webber and he thanked the members for the honour of being chosen and assured the members he would do all he could to enhance the club’s image President’s Report – Julian Lugg The last 12 months seem to have passed very quickly – being very busy and very enjoyable. The great strength of our club I believe is the registers. Whilst we have continued great attendance at our general meetings it is through the registers that most club members are involved. I must pay tribute to our register secretaries who coordinate the registers and maintain communication. The executive committee of our club is a great group of enthusiasts who work tirelessly for the welfare of the club. Vice President Phil Prior, Secretary Alan Bartram, Treasurer Tim White, Membership Secretary Daphne Charman, Editor Dane Wilden and Event Coordinators Jim & Arcadia Komaromi deserve special mention as your elected committee. We have been fortunate to have the support of Dave Burton as our Logbook Officer seeing us through some recent changes in Historic Registration now called Club Registration. This change in registration

2017 AGM Minutes

has been great for motoring in our state by reducing vehicle restrictions and reducing paper work. Along with many register activities one great event for the promotion of our marque was the V8 supercar event where the parade of drivers featured some 30 Jaguars (and a Daimler). We also had a large club display of vehicles at the event and I wish to thank Di & Roger Adamson for their coordination and liaison. Di Adamson was also appointed as our National Jaguar Rally 2018 Director. Planning is well underway with what should be a great event with a different format from recent National Rallies. Over the last 5 years we have been privileged to have had Ian Webber AO as club patron. We appreciate Ian’s support and guidance over this time and we wish him all the best as he retires from the role. It is with great pleasure that we have appointed long time club member and well respected motoring enthusiast Peter Holland as the new club Patron. Thank you to all club members for your support over the last 12 months. Julian Lugg (President) Vice President’s Report – Philip Prior With our President Julian I thank all members for what has been another very good year for the Jaguar Drivers Club of SA. In saying that I recognise that the strength and enjoyable nature of our club does not happen by accident. There has been a great deal of energy, time and real commitment given by so many throughout the year to ensure the club runs smoothly, new members are made to feel welcome and existing members are enjoying a wide range of club activities. With Julian I gratefully acknowledge the work and contribution made by the Executive Committee. We are very fortunate to have such a cohesive and positive committee steering our club on a day to day basis and we can look forward to new initiatives and exciting activities ahead. In particular I want to thank our President Julian, for his caring and focused leadership throughout the year.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Clubs such as ours are about people. Jaguar cars are a common bond but beyond that we are a very “broad church” with great diversity of ages, interests and backgrounds and I commend all our members for the

way we are able to care for each other, help each other and generally ensure that our club is above all else inclusive and welcoming in nature. With a club of our size we cannot expect to be intimately involved with every other member and it is therefore important for us to recognise and thank our Register Secretaries for the great job they do and the important role they play in this regard. As smaller interest groups our Registers are able to provide a more intimate level of involvement whilst remaining inclusive and welcoming to all. Thank you all for a very good year, and may there be many more to come. Philip Prior (Vice President) Secretary’s Report – Alan Bartram Many thanks for your ongoing support throughout the year. Treasurer’s Report - Tim White Overall, we have total assets of $75,262.31 (2016 - $79,857.89), which includes term deposits of $33,524.75 (2016 - $51,033.37). The result for the financial year was more than our budget with a deficit of $5,131.01. A number of benefits and subsidies (direct & indirect) were passed onto members in a number of ways throughout the year. For example: presentation dinner, SA Jag Day, Christmas general meetings, calendars and register support. These benefits total some $17,733 (2016 - $17,733; 61%) or 64% of total income for this year. This represents some 79% of your membership subscriptions, which is not sustainable over the longer term. The new historic registration system will see a decrease in costs for the club and with some other improvements will save the time spent by the membership officer. An increase in membership fees has already been implemented and this along with a number of costs savings being implemented by Executive we are hoping to avoid another increase in subscriptions next year. A big thank you to Simon Mudie from Eastwoods for doing the Audit again this financial year. We will continue to take where possible a long-term approach to our financial position so that the club is well positioned for the future to weather any “unknown unknowns”, not simply providing short term benefits

Club Torque which have no real member payback. Tim White (Treasurer) I MOVE that the audited financial statements for the year ended 30/6/2017 be accepted. Seconded by P Clarke Approved I MOVE that Simon Mudie be appointed the Auditor for the year ended 30/6/2018 Seconded by J Komaromi Approved Editor’s Report – Dane Wilden 2017 has brought about a changing of the guard for Classic Marque. I took over from Phil Prior, and my first edition was published. in February 2017. I have tried to bring a little of my own style to the magazine, whilst maintaining the proven format that's so well loved by the membership. Part of the work I have put into the magazine has been around giving Classic Marque a more uniform, corporate look, and I feel that in most cases, this has been a success. I have also sought to develop a closer relationship with Solitaire, through advertising and promotional pieces, which in turn, has given the magazine unprecedented access to the newest models in the Jaguar range, as well as access to Jaguar Land Rover's global press site and press releases. Consequently, Classic Marque is now able to provide the readership with the most up-todate information on the Jaguar company from both a local and global perspective. Statistics available from our on-line publishing partner ISSU demonstrate that Classic Marque plays an important role in informing active club members, and engaging members who are unable to attend monthly meetings or register gatherings. The average readership for each issue of Classic Marque published during my tenure as. editor fluctuates between 80 and 200 people, with each issue producing an average reading time of 35 minutes. Impressions produced by each magazine have fluctuated between 500 and 1800 per issue. Moving forward, it is the intention of both the dub and I to continue to pursue a predominantly digital audience. It is important to highlight that the club will not cease the production of hard copies of Classic Marque for those members who do not have the means of accessing a digital copy.

2017 AGM Minutes cont.

I intend to continue to promote a digital subscription to Classic Marque over a traditional postal subscription, and ask that all postal subscribers consider their ability to access the magazine in a digital format (online, email etc). I wish to thank those who have already contacted me directly, and through their register secretaries. Currently production costs of hard copies of Classic Marque sit at approximately $200 p/ c/m. This does not include the quantification of effort to transport the magazine from the printers, packaging, or delivering to sponsors. It is the goal of both the executive and myself to continue to gradually reduce these costs, and return the savings to the wider membership. Finally, I would like to encourage members to continue to submit material for publication. Without continual contributions by our members, Classic Marque will lose a good portion of exclusively club-based content, the major appeal of producing a club magazine. Thank you, and I hope you continue to enjoy Classic Marque. Dane Wilden (Editor) General Business: Life membership Nomination President Julian was asked to vacate the room while Vice President Phil Prior advised the meeting that a formal nomination from David Burton, Robert Charman, Evan Spartalis and Malcolm Adamson in keeping with the constitution had been duly received for life membership for Julian and Moira Lugg. Phil outlined their achievements since joining the JDCSA at the inaugural meeting in 1973. Julian was an active member until 1986 when they moved to Mt Gambier for work where he and a friend revived the Green Triangle Register in the South East. He was active in organising the first XK Border Run and held the position of Register Secretary until they were transferred to Waikerie. Their much revered XK120 accompanied them on their moves and on returning to Adelaide in1995 Julian held several executive roles including Club Secretary, Register Secretary, Vice President and President. In recent years they found time to restore their beloved XK120 to original condition.

We were treated to fresh apple juice and a range of beverages. A few other cars were found lurking in the cold stores. Some people enjoyed a walk up the hill to the nearby scrub. A highlight of the day was when the Benz was coaxed into life and David drove it around the yard for a few laps. Several of our members were quite brave and climbed up into the passenger seat to experience riding in what is probably one of the oldest cars in Australia. Thanks to Graeme and Fiona for a wonderful day.

An Old Classic Has Youth On Its Side Secretary). After months of continued exposure and initiation to the Jaguar brand, I finally gave into temptation and sought counsel from Bobby to locate a rare gem for my daughter and I. Within 24 hours, I received a welcome phone call from Bobby and that he had just sighted an email from a gentleman who wanted to dispose of a family Jaguar. The following day we proceeded to make our way to the Adelaide Hills to inspect the 1976 XJ6 Series II that still had lasting impressions of the idiosyncratic regency red body and imposing tan leather. We discovered that the vehicle was previously owned by a deceased enthusiast, an ex Jag club member, Wyatt Hebbard, who had been restoring the vehicle for 20 years. I am pleased to say that after a little nudge and leap of faith I made an offer that was well received. The vehicle has recently been inspected and received a sound bill of health - plugs, oil and filter were all that was needed to get the old girl road worthy again. After driving this car for the last few months, my fashionably stylish 20-year-old daughter has successfully created a whirlwind of interest in the car brand, being enthusiastically approached to have the car appear in fashion photography and turning countless heads on the street! Her passion for the elegance and prestige of the brand has created a true XJ Jaguar ambassador.

By Robert M Sbrogiò “Dad, I would like to own a classic car one day.” I heard these famous words 10 years ago from my daughter, Montana, dreaming of the day when she could drive a vehicle that demands attention with style and class.

As a family, we experienced the fear of the unknown with the old girl, but after months of enjoying sublime drives together, we can safely say we are pleased to be part of the Jaguar family and most importantly appreciative to be proud owners of this classic vehicle.

My story starts many years ago when I was indentured into considerable hours working with my father building and restoring classics with a great degree of reluctance. My father was a mechanical engineer, an ex Royal Australian Mechanical Engineer who taught me an abundance of skills on body repair, engine rebuilds and restoration. Over this time, I’ve had the pleasure of bringing back to life some old favourites BMW’s 02 series, VW’s and a Fiat Spyder. All these projects required many hours rubbing shoulders, bonnets, and shared conversations with heated debate. Through these varied conversations, one of the many memorable statements I heardTHE time and time BOTTOM again and which is permanently impressed into my psyche was, “Do not buy an OLD ENGLISH CAR! They are problematic, leak oil and overheat”.

The Ed.’s Inbox

THE BOTTOM LINE Something from my own inbox this week - photos from my trip to Clare for the National Veteran Vehicle Rally. Over 130 vehicles built prior to 1919 (no Jags or even S.S. cars here!) attended the rally from around Australia, and I rode along in my good friends’ 1909 Gregoire. A truly fabulous machine! A fun time was had by all, and I even made some new friends too! A special thanks to Andy and John for inviting me along.
