AA Visiting teachers program 2015 This presentation has been made in order to apply for the AA visiting teachers programm of the Architectural Association in London for the summer of 2015. it was accepted for the AA and I had the chance to experience 3 weeks in London sharing with other eight (8) fantastic lecturers from around the world. The whole point about this excersice of Design with 5 senses is to exposed students of first semester to another ways of design and think, to explore the world not only with the eyes, but with others humans instruments: ears, nose, finger and even your tongue. This is an educational laboratory sponsored by the excellence of education centre (CEDU) of the Universidad del Norte and it is a working progress experiment that has been on my class room for a about one year. It is intended to help students to sensibilize them about nature and human capacity in terms of senses and disability.

•Where the idea come from? http://www.ted.com/talks/jinsop_lee_design_for_all_5_senses
•Questions that lead to the exercise: How many times do we design thinking in all 5 senses? What happens when we don´t have some senses working 100%? If we activate the 5 senses, could it be lead us to use other materials? Can we make the students THINK about the disability by forcing them no to have them for a moment? These are some of the questions that let me to try this laboratory in the class room and out side. Expose students to confront and experience the design without having any of their five senses operating, is the experience I wanted. This is evidence of the laboratory, it was conducted during the months of June to October 2014 in Basic Design workshop – first semester students Juan Garcés –De- Vivo Universidad del Norte- Barranquilla. Step 1: Composition exercise: Students must do compositions based on lines and Points but in 3D - Based of several authors ( Wicius Wong. Francis Ching, Kandinsky) - No instructions about thinking about 5 senses – Free selections of material - They have to the compositions with the abstraction of the 4 seasons:

They realize that compositions does have more conditions to be recognized or remember from no other way but : Shape , color, sound, smell & taste -They tend to use a wider range of materiales. -Explore new materials and how they can use them. - Recicling materials. -Materiales with more than one property. This exercise has been proved for only one and a half year in my first semester design studio class and the whole point is to see how the students reacts to design in the next years of their studies of architecture. So far the student group shown in this presentation is about to take their second year of architecture , we will see how it has woked for them in the way the approach their projects and life.
