James D. Julia, Inc.

Welcome to James D. Julia, Inc.

The First Source for Your Auction Needs Based on our annual sales, James D. Julia, Inc. is one of the top ten antique auction houses in North America. We are headquartered in Fairfield, Maine and have a satellite office in Boston, Massachusetts. We have been in business for almost five decades and conduct high-end antique, collectible, and decorative arts auctions throughout the year. Our auctions routinely establish new world records both for the items auctioned and the total hammer price for the auction.

They allow us to deliver the best results to our consignors and customers, to grow and thrive as a company, and to retain our leadership position in the ever-changing auction industry. These “etched in stone” priorities include: • Conducting all business in a fair, honest, and transparent manner. • Being professional and personable. • Providing the finest level of service and expertise. • Offering sellers the most attractive and lowest sales commission rates, as low as 0% for expensive items, as well as the highest financial returns, on their consignments. • Delighting buyers with an extraordinary selection of items and collections of quality, rarity and value, and a limited guarantee that few other auctioneers offer. • Our team is available to provide many services as varied as free auction estimates, guidance on how to approach the sale of an estate, deaccession of a museum collection and assistance with appraisals for estate or income tax purposes.

Our company consists of three key specialty divisions. These include Rare Firearms; Fine Art, Asian & Antiques; and Rare Lamps, Glass & Fine Jewelry. Each of our divisions is regarded for its excellence and is staffed with world-class specialists to ensure fair and professional authentication, identification and valuation services. Although we have an outstanding, worldwide reputation for our best-in-class service and expertise, as well as our product range and offerings, we are at heart a family run company guided by strong family values. As a family owned business, we understand that many times our consignors have a financial and emotional connection to their collection. Our goal is two-fold, first to help each of our consignors make as much money as they can with their consignment; second, to offer expertise and guidance as they proceed through the auction process. Our long time, core priorities direct every aspect of how we do our work. Visit www.jamesdjulia.com for more information

About Julia’s

Our History with Deep Roots in Excellence and Legacy Maine Heritage; Global Perspective

Jim graduated from college in 1974, bought the business from his father, and continued to grow it. By the early 1980s, Julia’s was known as a significant regional auction house. A few years later, Jim began to organize the auction house into specialty divisions as well as investing in the production of high quality print catalogs. These efforts paid off, and by the late 1980s, the company enjoyed a national reputation of excellence.

Our company’s roots in honesty and integrity were planted in the boyhood days of our founder, Jim Julia. In the 1950s, Jim’s father, Arthur, ran a successful insurance business. However, Arthur’s true calling was antiques, and so he started a small antiques business. His then school-aged son, Jim, picked up on his father’s passion and started working in the store during weekends and vacations. Even as a youngster, Jim couldn’t get enough of fine antiques, artwork, firearms and historical ephemera.

By the early 1990s, Jim established five specialty catalog divisions for the company. These include fine firearms; rare lamps and glass; toys, dolls, and antique advertising; fine art, antiques; and rare antique decoys. Each quickly established leadership roles in their respective areas.

A few years later, when Jim was old enough to drive, he made house calls to area estates. But not everyone was interested in selling their antiques and heirlooms. Then Jim had an idea that would change his family’s business forever–offering auction services to sell these fine items to a larger audience of buyers. Soon after, in the mid1960s, Arthur started a small country auction house which quickly became popular in central Maine.

He learned a lesson from another Maine company, L.L. Bean, and instituted a limited 45 day guarantee. Even today this is unique in the auction industry. This guarantee provides peace of mind to bidders and buyers, and encourages them to bid from around the world with confidence. Although Julia’s sold its interest in its decoy division in the 1990s, it continues today to be the exclusive auctioneer for this former division. A highlight of this relationship occurred in 2000. In cooperation with the Guyette & Schmidt Decoy Auction Company and Sotheby’s, Jim Julia shared the Sotheby’s auction podium with Sotheby’s auctioneers to auction the $11 million McCleary Decoy Collection. Jim was the first and only outside auctioneer to ever auction at Sotheby’s New York auction house. This achievement forever elevated him, and his namesake auction house, to international reputation–an ironclad status that continues almost two decades onward. The auction industry has seen enormous changes since the Julia family founded the company almost five decades ago. Perhaps

Thank You

World Class Auction Company With a Personal Touch

Thank you for taking the time to read this publication. We have the finest auction team that I have ever worked with, and they do a wonderful job for both our consignors and our buyers. Today, more than ever it is critical to do business with a company that you can trust. Back in 1974 I purchased the business from my father. He always taught me that, “bought right is half sold.” That basic tenet drives the auction business today. Great merchandise consigned at realistic, low estimates will usually generate the best results for our consignors. Year after year we continue to prove the validity of this formula. As we have grown from a small auction barn to one of the leading antique auction houses in North America, we continue to retain this formula. Our combined team of in house staff and knowledgeable specialists provide a level of expertise and customer service that I feel is unmatched in the auction industry. Back in my teens my father sent me out to “pick” from many of the houses within a fifty mile radius of Fairfield. I still remember the feeling of knocking on the door and introducing myself, just hoping to get inside and discover some treasures. I found that being honest and fair with my clients was the best policy almost fifty years ago and it is the same today. I look forward to doing business with you and hope you come to an upcoming auction here in Fairfield. As my staff hears me say, “It is at the center of everything in Maine. The mountains, the lakes and the ocean, all less than an hour away.” —Jim Julia

Sellers will be pleased to know that our average sale value per lot recently topped $15,000; our industry competitors range from $800-3,000 per lot. Julia’s frequently sets World Record prices at our Extraordinary Auction of Rare and Historic Firearms auctions, as well as continually offering the most valuable firearms at auction in the world. Some of our highlights include a rare Colt Walker pistol for $920,000, (at the time, the most expensive single firearm ever auctioned), President Theodore Roosevelt’s Fox “F” Grade Shotgun for $862,500, Engraved and Gold Inlaid Colt SAA revolver (Sears and Roebuck “Cow Boy” Special) for $747,500. We excel at marketing and selling rare and valuable firearms, including important Winchesters, rare Colts, high art shotguns, Civil War and Class-3 machine guns, among others. While other auction companies focus on sheer volume over quality, we have maintained our focus on outstanding firearms, both for the collector and the sportsman. And, as a result, we have an impressive, loyal and global customer base for our high-grade firearms and militaria. The collections we’ve handled in recent years reads like a “Who’s Who” in the gun world. Iconic collections from all over the world like the Norm Flayderman Collection, the Wes Adams Collection, the Elmer Keith collection, the Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess collection, the Springfield Arsenal Artillery Collection, the Evergreen Museum Collection of Class-3 firearms, the Woody & Betty Frey collection, the Frank Sujanksy collection, the Dr. Douglas Sirkin collection, the Dr. John Pickup collection, the collection of Robert Howard and the Scagel knife collection of Dr. Lucie. Julia’s Sporting & Collector Firearms Auction accompanies our Extraordinary Auction of Rare and Collectible firearms, and features lots targeted in the $2,000 to $8,000 price range. We had many clients that requested we expand into this category, and our results have been outstanding. While this auction is not designed to be a record setter, it has achieved fabulous results thus far both in the sell through and in the prices realized at auction.

What Our Clients Have to Say... As we began researching options, I contacted a number of qualified resources and unanimously your name came up with excellent reviews. Upon our first meeting I acquired a level of confidence and trust in the skilled knowledge you presented of your craft. I am grateful for the “pros and cons” that you shared with me to shed light on what direction would be the most appropriate choice for our family.

...The revenue of the sales proved very rewarding and I was in awe of how strategically everything was planned and followed through. Your professionalism has its own elevation of excellence.

...Once again, please be assured that I remain a loyal customer of the Julia auction and I also remain a friend. I will continue to promote the Julia auction when asked who I trusted to auction my firearms.

Dr. Joseph A. Murphy

—Dr. Joseph A. Murphy During the course of the many emotions and setbacks involved in dealing with the death of a loved one and the estate, and the sale of family heirlooms, working with Jim and the entire staff was always like a breath of fresh air, moving closer to resolution without complication! I look forward to sharing this experience with my friends as well as having a continued relationship with the business end of the auction house.

—Elizabeth Adams and the Wes Adams family It always seemed that words failed me in my effort to justly describe the unbelievable and incredible manner in which you accomplished this regarding the preparation of, the conducting of, and the results of the sale. Your penchant for exacting detail, the massive amount of nationwide pre-sale advertising including the most impressive Las Vegas display, the highly ethical and time consuming personal counsel you gave freely to many buyers (yes, I heard from many buyers how pleasant and thorough you were in describing pieces). The list goes on…

The catalog presentation was spectacular and all of the advertisements and mini broadsides were also high quality. The opportunity to work with the Julia family has been a very pleasant experience for me – always first class in every way.
