Get the shot: Seven shots and how to recreate them yourself Featuring Sal Cincotta Tim Kemple Alba Soler Adam Angelides Chris Knight Andreas Lundberg Pauline Darley
The world is my studio With Sal Cincotta
The shoot An important part of the photographer's art is the ability to improvise a location. Who would have thought that an unassuming back street in an industrial area in downtown St Louis would prove to be the perfect spot to capture a wedding portrait? Luckily, one of the world's leading wedding photographers, Sal Cincotta, decided that it would be the ideal location. The challenge Shooting in a public area means that people are out and about and could get curious about what's going on. So it's always an advantage to be able to move fast. In essence, get in, get the shot and get out. In addition, it was a cloudy day, and the sky was acting like one huge soft box, which meant Sal needed to augment the natural light with flash to create significantly more depth and warmth.
2
Profoto
The solution Sal shot with the Profoto A1 on camera. He added a warming gel, in this instance a Half CTO Gel to bring warmth to the portrait. He also added a Dome Diffuser. The light from the A1 is already natural and beautiful, but the dome diffuser further smooths and softens the light ensuring that the skin tones are nice and natural. Shooting with the A1 on camera flash brings out all the subtle details in her hair while providing a good level of contrast on her face and below her jawline. Flash also adds a pleasing catch-light in her eyes – bringing them to life. Shooting in TTL allowed Sal to lock in the exposure allowing him to work even faster. The gear 1 x Profoto A1 1 x Dome Diffuser 1 x Half CTO Gel
Shooting with the world’s smallest studio light Profoto A1
Light that’s both natural and beautiful Because we designed the A1 with a round head rather than the typical rectangular shape used by other on-camera solutions, the light it delivers is both natural and beautiful. That spread of light can also be easily adjusted from a wide setting, where the light has a soft smooth fall off to something narrower and more focused – with just a simple twist of the zoom ring on the head.
AirTTL means built-in convenience and versatility With AirTTL you have a huge amount of built-in flexibility. TTL allows you to lock in the perfect exposure instantly, giving you far greater degree of control and a significantly faster workflow. It’s pretty much point-and-shoot; it’s easy, fast and precise. And the ‘Air’ feature means you can communicate with another A1 or other Profoto light seamlessly, and HighSpeed Sync is right there when you need it.
More than light Being able to work with light is the key to creating better, more creative images. That’s why the A1 comes with a dedicated set of light-shaping modifiers that, thanks to a built-in smart magnetic mount, can be easily clicked on and off or stacked to help you achieve exactly the effect you want. These are a Dome Diffuser, Bounce Card and a Wide Lens included with the A1 and a Gel Kit and a Soft Bounce as optional extras.
No more worrying about battery life The A1 has its own exchangeable Li-Ion high capacity battery pack that lasts up to four times longer than AA batteries with no performance fade, and a facility to recharge quickly. So, you can shoot for longer with confidence. Never miss a shot The A1 can keep up because it recycles four times faster than most on-camera solutions – that’s every 1.2 seconds at full power. Put simply, you’ll never miss a shot.

Taking on-location shooting to new heights With Tim Kemple
The shoot Locations all have their own degree of difficulty. When your location is a sheer cliff above the sea in Mallorca, wind, glaring sun, wet, slippery rock and the chance that one false move means that someone falls into the water are among the givens. The ever-present possibility that a bad handoff can mean a camera winds up sleeping with the fishes just adds to the fun. That’s what action photographer Tim Kemple faced in Mallorca, the birthplace of deep-water soloing-rock climbing without safety ropes high above the sea.
The solution Tim used the B1X directly overhead as the key light and let the sun become the fill. To do this, he used the HSS function on the B1X and shot at 1/2,500 of a second. The fast shutter speed allowed him to darken down the sunlight hitting the cliff. And by setting the B1X to the maximum power and using the OCF Magnum Reflector for an extra f-stop of light, he could spotlight Edu with the flash and overpower the sun.
The challenge It’s one thing to get trained rock climbers into position. But photographing them was a high-wire act for Tim. First he had to rappel into position to get his shots. Then he had to hang there with a flash and a light shaping tool strong enough to overpower the sun and mobile enough to have out there with him. For this shot, Tim’s aim was to make professional climber Edu Marin stand out from the wall in the bright ambient light.

Magical, timeless stories made believable with lighting With Alba Soler The shoot For a portrait shoot with a child at Valencia Botanical Gardens in Spain, Alba Soler wanted to tell a timeless story in which the beholder could sense the magic yet believe the story. “The aesthetic is creamy yet crispy, whimsical and, at the same time, realistic,” she says. The challenge Children move a lot, especially in an outdoor location like the botanical gardens, so Alba needed to be able to move around and be flexible herself. Even though she planned her setups well ahead, there still had to be room for improvisation. “It makes no sense to me to prepare a lighting set up that is not able to move quickly since you lose the inspiration, the child and the flow,” she says. And for the image to be believable, the light had to be believable.

Profoto
The solution Shooting in TTL and using the Profoto B2 Off-Camera Flash with an OCF Beauty Dish White, she could pose the model independently of the ambient light, still lighting her face properly. “I use the OCF Beauty Dish White for an even, creamy light. Both the B2 and the OCF Beauty Dish are also easy to transport and easy to carry once assembled. “That is very important for me since I change places all the time during the photoshoot.” The gear 1 × B2 Off-Camera Flash 1 × OCF Beauty Dish White 2' 1 × OCF Speedring 1 × Air Remote TTL-C

How to create natural light with flash With Adam Angelides
The shoot Lifestyle photographer Adam Angelides’ portfolio is a mix of images shot with flash and images shot with ambient light only. But they all look and feel equally natural. Keep reading to learn how he does it. Sometimes the ambient light is just perfect. But usually it’s not. It’s too bright. It’s too dark. It’s the middle of the day when you want a glowing sunset. That’s why we use flash. With flash you’re in full control. If it’s too bright you use it to overpower the sun. If it’s too dark you light up your subject. If it’s the wrong time of day you add an orange color gel and create your own sunset. The challenge The trick is to make it look natural. People should pay attention to the image, not the technique behind it. Adam Angelides knows this just as much as anyone. His portfolio is a mix of images shot with flash and images shot with ambient light only, but they all have an equally natural look and feel to them. So what’s his secret?
8
Profoto
The solution “There are a few things to look out for,” says Adam. “As a general rule, you want to keep the lighting ratio between your available light and your flash well balanced. Not underexposing the available light will also help produce a more natural looking image. You should also pay attention to light direction. For example, if you have the sun showing to the left in an image and you add an equally powerful light source to the right, it will not look real. Naturally, every scene and concept is different. But if it doesn’t look real, it more than likely is not real.” The gear 1 × B1 Off-Camera Flash 1 × OCF Color Gel Starter Kit 1 × Umbrella Deep Silver L with diffuser 1 × Air Remote TTL-C

Homage to Hollywood: Re-creating a Golden Age with cinematic portraits With Chris Knight The shoot Photographer Chris Knight uses three Profoto D1 Monolights to transfer the sensation of celluloid and silver to a modernday photo shoot and re-create a grand, cinematic portrait style from a bygone era. In the final images, photos of modern subject look like those classical, chic images of movie stars of old. The challenge The biggest challenge is executing the grand vision of this type of shoot with many small details in order to make the images tell a story and really talk to the audience. Everything has to feel dynamic to achieve the idea. “It’s a commendable thing to create something technically well executed, but photographs still have to have a narrative or tell a story,” Chris says. “It’s an exhilarating balancing act.”
The solution To create drama and shape the overall feel of the image, Chris set up a Profoto D1 Monolight, fitted with a diffused Umbrella Deep White XL, as main light quite high, to the left of his camera position. Behind him and his camera he set up another D1 with a diffused Umbrella Deep White L. This allowed him to control the brightness of the shadows and the overall contrast. The hazy, filmic feeling is partially generated by a haze machine. To light up the fog from behind, Chris set up yet another D1 with an Umbrella Deep White S above the backdrop, high up and pointed at camera. “When encountering anything particle-based, like smoke, haze, fog etc., it must be lit from behind to be seen,” he says. Always up to speed With Andreas Lundberg
The shoot The shoot took place at Delight Studios in Stockholm. Andreas was commissioned to do a shoot for a gymnastics organization who wanted campaign images showing the speed and agility of their athletes. Much like Andreas, the young gymnasts are genuinely passionate about what they do, and he wanted to capture that. “Think about all that dynamic movement their bodies create. To capture that energy and motion in super sharp detail is something that gets me really pumped up,” says Andreas when asked about his artistic idea. He wanted the images to feel dynamic. The models in heroic poses with pearls of sweat showing on their skin and the chalk powder in the air, as if they were suspended in time and space. The challenge Shooting sport is demanding. You need to be alert and ready so as not to miss out on any of the action. The greatest failure for a photographer is to miss that special moment. As a photographer you do not want to stand in the middle of the action and worry that the flash will not fire. Speed makes all the difference. The lighting conditions were rather tricky. There was beautiful, but strong, ambient light that Andreas wanted to work into

the picture. “I try to enhance the feeling of natural light in almost all my images. I use flash in most of my shoots, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I want it to show,” Andreas explains. “Feeling confident about having the fastest gear there is enables you to be much more creative,” says Andreas. The solution To capture the passion, adrenaline and action of the gymnasts, the setup consisted of four Profoto D2 Monolights. He used two monolights for the backlight, both with a Profoto Zoom Reflector and as main light he lit the subject with two D2’s, each with a Strip Softbox 1×4’. Using the High-Speed Sync function Andreas could match the ambient light coming through the windows to the right and overpower it with his flashes, granting him full control of the shoot. Using the Air Remote TTL-C he set the flashes into burst mode and just fired away. The gear 4 × D2 Monolight 2 × Zoom Reflector 2 × RFi Softbox 1x4' 1 × Air Remote TTL-C
The world’s fastest monolight with TTL Profoto D2
Quick to set up. Easy to use. Our philosophy at Profoto is simple – sometimes less is more. So there are only a few buttons and dials for those key functions that you often need to use. And there’s a large display that’s easy to read in the dark or in bright sunshine, where you often find some of the best photographers. Get the perfect light with AirTTL Finding the right exposure first time can be a challenge when time is limited or the light is constantly changing. AirTTL automatically does it all for you, so you just point and shoot. Capture the action Shooting in super quick bursts of 20 flashes per second you can capture every part of the action. Ask your subject to jump and you’ll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from. And besides fast recycling, D2 can also sync with the quickest shutter speeds up to 1/8,000s. Freeze the moment Creating crisp, sharp images with no motion blur is not a problem for the world’s fastest monolight. D2’s short flash duration of up to 1/63,000s enables it to freeze an image with absolute sharpness.
Overpower any light. Or add a hint of light. D2’s wide 10-stop power range offers you flexible options for different lighting scenarios. It packs enough punch to overpower the sun and illuminate larger areas. Yet you can also use the lower f-stops to add a subtle hint of light in darker environments – perfect for when you want to create a cozy, moody atmosphere. Shape light in broad daylight with HSS With Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) it doesn’t matter how bright the sun shines. It enables you to use your flash at shutter speeds up to 1/8,000s. So you can overpower the sun and shape your light even with large apertures in broad daylight. Rooftop fashion shoot in Paris With Pauline Darley
The shoot The chic but hectic Les Piaules, one of Paris’s most popular youth hostels offered plenty of potential to create multiple metropolitan setups for fashion photographer Pauline Darley: a cozy bar, the foyer and the rooftop. In all, Pauline had five hours to shoot five outfits in three locations. The challenge Since the photos were for a series, Pauline had to get a consistent look despite different light conditions in each setup. “In the bar and foyer I mixed ambient light with my flashes and had to take both the lamps and the light from outside into consideration,” she says. “On the rooftop terrace, the light was changing constantly all the way to dusk and then it went pitch black (well, as black as a night can be in a city like Paris).” With limited time and no assistant, she also had to be able to make quick adjustments and move the equipment by herself.
14
Profoto
The solution To quickly get consistent light in all five setups, Pauline shot with a Sony α7R II with the Air Remote TTL-S and the lightweight Profoto B2 off-camera flash. “The Air Remote TTL-S fully integrated my Sony α7R II with the B2 so I did not need to tamper with the settings. Using the TTL function saved me a lot of time when trying to find the perfect light. The Air Remote TTL-S calculated everything for the necessary lighting power on the subject.” After each outfit, she needed to move to a different place, so the light weight of the B2 was a game changer. “When we moved from the main floor to the roof I could move the stand, the head with the light shaping tool and the B2 by myself, and I am not the strongest person in the world.” The gear 1 × B2 Location Kit 1 × OCF Softbox 2' Octa 1 × OCF Softgrid 50° 2' Octa 1 × OCF Softbox 2x3' 2 × OCF Speedring 1 × Air Remote TTL-S
Wirelessly connect your lights with your camera Profoto Air Remotes
Take full control of your flashes or fire your camera from up to 300 m/1,000 ft away. Shoot without any cords and stay moving. All this is possible thanks to Air – the world’s fastest system for remote radio sync and control, designed to free your eyes and hands so that your mind and heart can focus on the image you set out to create. Air Remote TTL AirTTL offers full TTL operation with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Fujifilm cameras. Attach the remote to the camera’s hot shoe, then point and shoot. The off-camera flash will automatically adjust its light output to provide you with the perfect exposure. It’s as easy as it sounds.
AirTTL also includes patent-pending Profoto High-Speed Sync technology, making it fast and easy to do fast paced action shots or daylight backlit portraits with large apertures. Air Remote and Air Sync The standard Air Remote and Air Sync can be used to wirelessly control and sync your flashes from any camera with a hot shoe. There will be no TTL and HSS functionality, but the sensation of shooting without any cords is the same.
For more precise control, switch to Hybrid Mode. This allows you to first shoot with TTL to get a technically perfect exposure, and then switch to Manual Mode with the same readings and settings and do whatever creative adjustments you feel like doing. It’s a huge time saver.

For a softer light in any shape RFi Softboxes
There’s a reason that our RFi softboxes are so popular. They are made with high quality, durable fabrics and available in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Setting up is fast and hassle-free thanks to color-coded speedrings and Velcro attachments. There’s a wide range of optional accessories too, including speedring adapters which will ensure your softbox is compatible with the major flash brands. It’s true to say we’ve got a softbox for every occasion. The range starts with the smallest at 1x1.3' and ends with the largest at 4x6' with more than 20 other sizes in between. It’s worth keeping in mind that the larger the softbox and the closer the light source is to the subject the softer the light will be.
Octa Octa softboxes are perfect for people photography thanks to their circle-like shape that generates an attractive and natural looking catch-light in the subject’s eye. The Octa also gives an equally soft or hard edge on all sides. Strip Strip softboxes provide a soft light with long shadow edges from the long side and a harder light from the short side with short shadow edges. This makes them ideal for edge or rim lighting that separates the subject from the background. This effect is often used on the side of a person or to enhance the curves of an object such as a car, or for elegant highlights on glassware or other reflective objects.
Rectangular and Square Rectangular softboxes suit most photography areas and therefore it’s no surprise that they’re our most popular. Their shape makes them similar to a window light and they’re available in a wide range of sizes from one foot up to six feet. The smallest provide a semi-soft but distinct light and the largest ones a super soft almost shadow free light. Square softboxes are extra popular for shooting people, especially head and shoulder portraits where they provide an even soft-edged and flattering light on all sides that seems to wrap around the subject.

Profoto
For easy and versatile light shaping Umbrella Deep and Shallow
Umbrellas are the backbone of many photographers’ toolboxes, understandably so, because they are easy to work with and ideal to bring to location. Profoto Umbrellas are made to the same exacting standards we apply to all our light modifiers. Available in 18 unique versions and made with high-quality fabrics and surface-treated metallic elements, Profoto Umbrellas provide a superior light and last for many years. Umbrella Deep All of Profoto’s deep umbrellas have a deeper parabolic shape compared with the average umbrella. The deeper the shape, the better control you have of the light spread. It also allows you to focus and shape light by simply sliding the umbrella shaft backward or forward in its holder. Umbrella Shallow A master of portability and ease-of-use, the Umbrella Shallow is the go-to light modifier when you need a soft light with wide light spread. It’s lightweight and fast to set up, and takes up very little space in your bag when folded.
Which shape? A deeper shape gives you more precise control of the light spread – a more focused light with less stray light. It also provides the possibility of a greater zoom effect than you’ll find in the shallow version. However, the shallow shape offers more light spread, which is useful if you want to achieve an evenly lit background. Which fabric? The Silver creates a very crisp, direct light with more contrast and a high light output, a little like the light you’d get from a hard reflector. The White reflects a more natural, softer light. Translucent umbrellas are used to shoot through and they diffuse and soften the light by reducing contrast. Translucent umbrellas are perfect for creating soft light when you’re very close to your subject. Which size? The sizes range from the smallest 85 cm (2.8') to the extralarge 165 cm (5.4'). The size affects the softness and spread of light. Think of it like this – the larger the umbrella the softer the light will be. Also, a larger umbrella will create an even illumination over a larger area, which is good for full length or group portraits.

Profoto – the light shaping company. A commitment to light shaping excellence today, and tomorrow. Profoto is more than a brand. Profoto is more than the world-leading light shaping products we make. Profoto is dedicated to making every image the best it can possibly be by helping the creator of that image bring the very best quality of light to it. And when you consider there are literally billions of images taken every single day, then you start to truly understand the full extent of our commitment to light shaping excellence.
Because we believe that light is the indispensable heart of all image creation, no matter what the camera, no matter what the situation, the ability to create amazing images is directly linked to the ability to master light shaping. That core principle is the key to enabling a world filled with incredible images, and the purpose of every single light shaping tool we make. Company facts
That dedication and passion was imprinted upon our DNA from the very beginning. 50 years ago, our founders Conny Dufgran and Eckhard Heine resolved to make the very best flash for the very best photographers – and they succeeded. That’s a standard that we don’t just aim to maintain – but to surpass.
