The Klimt Rapunzel box is a fabulous example of Austrian Secessionist style, carrying a distinctive provenance. It demonstrates the skill of hand chased and repousse metalwork, which Georg Klimt had mastered in his active years as a designer, working within the progressive Viennese circle during the early years of the twentieth century. Georg is known more as the brother of the more celebrated artist Gustav Klimt than as an artist in his own right. But Klimt’s work in metal is exceptionally superb, demonstrating the search for an aesthetic of handcraftsmanship. He practiced his skills in some of

The Rapunzel fairy tale is the theme of a jewel-like box, designed by Georg Klimt around the turn of the twentieth century, that will be available for sale in the upcoming holiday auction at Christies. The silver-plated brass box is a part of a unique collection of 220 objects belonging to the New York gallery Historical Design, one of the most progressive design galleries in the country.

With memories of Westchester’s blistering 100-degree summer still lingering, it’s hard to believe that ski season is a just few snowflakes away. To ease the transition from sweltering to crisp, we did the legwork on some of the best places to chill out in Northern Vermont. But first, a little history…Revolutionary War icon, Ethan Allen’s brother Ira – perhaps the Billy Carter of his day – snapped up thousands of acres of Vermont wilderness which included Mt. Mansfield. When Ira discovered it was useless for farming he unloaded it on some hapless investors. It wasn’t until the mid 1800’s that Stowe began to attract tourists.

Spruce Peak will soon boast a new village, homes, hotel and townhouses. Ten Acres Lodge The big luxe resort is not the only form of luxury to be had in Stowe. There are plenty of smaller, more intimate places with cozy rooms, roaring fires and excellent cuisine. The Ten Acres Lodge is one such place. Just minutes from skiing and shopping, the Ten Acres Lodge, built in 1836, is home to 28 uniquely decorated, luxurious rooms, plus a private two-bedroom cottage. This cozy inn has been a mainstay for Stowe fans for years. Creative and delicious local fare is served up daily at Erik and Tina’s Restaurant. Harrison’s The number of happening bars is rivaled only by the terrific restaurant choices. First up, Harrison’s located in the heart of Stowe. Its menu is varied with seafood, steaks, exotic salads, deep wine list and full bar. It’s Stowe’s ONLY late night dining option on Friday and Saturday night. The Shed A wildly popular hot spot for over 30 years, The Shed offers a relaxed, fun atmosphere that keeps the crowds coming, although, the house-made beer, great food and reasonable prices might also have something to do with it! 1859 Mountain Road.
The Rusty Nail Bar and Grille Before heading home to the comforts of your down quilt, check out the Rusty Nail Bar and Grille. Along with its lively bar scene, the Rusty Nail is known for music and lots of it –DJs, nightly Jazz Dinners, live bands and a happening dance floor. Mad River Glen As glamorous and sophisticated as Stowe is becoming, Mad River Glen offers a different skiing experience for those who prefer a more down-to-earth romanticism and perhaps, a more rugged adventure. Blessed with over 250 inches of natural snowfall each year and more than 2000 feet of vertical skiing terrain that’s just one lift ride away, Mad River Glen is acclaimed for it’s back to nature approach and natural beauty. And of course there’s the local refrain: “Mad River Glen, ski it if you can.” It’s also home to the nation’s last surviving single chairlift, circa 1948. (Note: This is due to be updated by a new single chairlift after the

‘06/07 season.) Less crowded and some say more challenging, this is the only “cooperative” resort in the United States – in other words, the skiers own it!
