before other galleries and tastemakers have adopted eclectic aesthetics. They are not just dealers, but connoisseurs whose names have become synonymous with high-quality and historically significant design. This celebrated collection comprises some of the most fascinating objects of modern design. In our age of eclectic taste, when people are no longer looking to limit themselves to living with a single aesthetic, the approach taken by Gallion and Morris is becoming highly relevant.

”Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair,” is one of the most unforgettable lines in all of the German fairy tales.

The sale, entitled 21/21 celebrates the gallery’s 21st anniversary at the 21st century. Unlike other single dealers’ collections offered for sale in recent years, which have been mostly liquidation sales, this event is represented in a comprehensive exhibition, curated by Gallion and Morris. In our age of fast communi-

The Klimt Rapunzel box is a fabulous example of Austrian Secessionist style, carrying a distinctive provenance. It demonstrates the skill of hand chased and repousse metalwork, which Georg Klimt had mastered in his active years as a designer, working within the progressive Viennese circle during the early years of the twentieth century. Georg is known more as the brother of the more celebrated artist Gustav Klimt than as an artist in his own right. But Klimt’s work in metal is exceptionally superb, demonstrating the search for an aesthetic of handcraftsmanship. He practiced his skills in some of

This romantic tale of the beautiful Rapunzel locked in a tower, who uses her long braided blond hair to pull up her rescuer prince, has captured the imagination of artists since the nineteenth century. The Rapunzel fairy tale is the theme of a jewel-like box, designed by Georg Klimt around the turn of the twentieth century, that will be available for sale in the upcoming holiday auction at Christies. The silver-plated brass box is a part of a unique collection of 220 objects belonging to the New York gallery Historical Design, one of the most progressive design galleries in the country.

Since opening in its current location in 1995, Historical Design has attracted serious collectors of modern design. A visit to the gallery has always been a special and educational experience for me. It is an experience that provides one with a level of emotional interaction beyond the obvious physical beauty of the furniture and objects on view. The collection is a comprehensive ensemble of modern aesthetics. With memories of Westchester’s blistering 100-degree summer still lingering, it’s hard to believe that ski season is a just few snowflakes away. To ease the transition from sweltering to crisp, we did the legwork on some of the best places to chill out in Northern Vermont. But first, a little history…Revolutionary War icon, Ethan Allen’s brother Ira – perhaps the Billy Carter of his day – snapped up thousands of acres of Vermont wilderness which included Mt. Mansfield. When Ira discovered it was useless for farming he unloaded it on some hapless investors. It wasn’t until the mid 1800’s that Stowe began to attract tourists.

this scare you, the ski bunny is alive and well and there are plenty of runs for every skill level. The Toll Road, Stowe’s longest trail, is a beginner’s dream as it gracefully meanders down the mountain affording spectacular views.

From its humble beginning as Ira’s bad real estate deal, Stowe is in the midst of a mega-million dollar makeover, on it’s way to

Spruce Peak will soon boast a new village, homes, hotel and townhouses. The highly anticipated Stowe Mountain Lodge is set to open in the fall of 2007, promising 139 elegantly appointed rooms, a spanking new spa and a Bob Cupp-designed golf course. (We’re sure your better half will convince you of the merits of golfing in chilling temperatures.) And if downhill skiing isn’t your

thing, consider snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, snowboarding and sleigh riding. Stowe offers one of the largest trail networks for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the country. Trust us when we tell you that this 19th century New England town (complete with white-steeple church and postcard perfect scenery) is an absolute paradise.

The first trail that made Stowe famous (aptly called The Nose Dive) was cut in 1934; it tested the talents of generations of skiers and was the subject of many a boast. Newer trails have continued the mountain’s chill factor. National, Goat, Lift Line and Starr all require solid skills to navigate. Or, as one skier has put it, “If you make one little error on The Goat, you are punished.” But don’t let

(So keep that in mind after enjoying a couple of Rusty Nail Martinis!) 123 Mountain Road.

Mad River Glen As glamorous and sophisticated as Stowe is becoming, Mad River Glen offers a different skiing experience for those who prefer a more down-to-earth romanticism and perhaps, a more rugged adventure. Blessed with over 250 inches of natural snowfall each year and more than 2000 feet of vertical skiing terrain that’s just one lift ride away, Mad River Glen is acclaimed for it’s back to nature approach and natural beauty. And of course there’s the local refrain: “Mad River Glen, ski it if you can.” It’s also home to the nation’s last surviving single chairlift, circa 1948.
