Pierre Cardin and the sleek ‘70s.

With the current buzz about 1970’s aesthetics; furnishings by Verner Panton, Paul Evans and Maria Pergay have recently drawn intense interest by collectors of modern design. Throughout the ‘70s, designers experimented with new materials and innovative technologies, creating exciting furniture in the modern-baroque and minimalist tradition. Furniture of this era was typically made of brushed metals, plastic, Plexiglas and recycled materials. The pieces were often upholstered with fake fur and synthetic fabrics in bright colors, manifesting a sophisticated and complex aesthetic that has now found it’s way back to the mainstream of home décor. In just a few years, furniture by select ‘70s designers has fetched five figures and up to the 100k range. For the collector interested in adding a piece of ‘70s furniture, the opportunities are becoming more and more rare. One of the greatest buys in the marketplace today is the work by French couturier Pierre Cardin. In the ‘70s, Pierre Cardin created chic, glamorous, cutting-edge furniture, crafted of rich lacquered woods and chrome veneers. Most people recall Pierre Cardin’s fame as a fashion designer, admired by such stars as Rita Hayworth and the Beatles. After launching his remarkable career in the postwar years, working for such legendary

a complete lifestyle, paving the way for designers Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani. This month I’m pleased to introduce you to a fabulous dining set, made of stainless steel veneer by Cardin. It will be offered in the March sale of the Chicago-based auction house, Treadway-Toomey. With its sleek lines and ‘70s style, the set looks as if it was taken directly from a James Bond movie. The set includes a bar cabinet, wall cabinet, dining table and six chairs, which likely sold for a very high price in the ‘70s. Today the auction estimate is from $5,000-$7000, a relative bargain because the market for Cardin furniture is still in its infancy. The set comes from the original collector and is

Movie audiences have been falling in love with agent 007 for over 40 years. Along with being the most successful movie franchise in Hollywood history, the Bond films stand for style, sophistication and, of course, non-stop action! They’ve broken down language and cultural barriers and left a generation of moviegoers looking up at the screen and asking, “How’d they do that?” Perhaps you’ve been on a remote island in the tropics somewhere, or hiking the hippie trail in the Hindu Kush. If so, then you’re forgiven for not knowing that there’s a new Bond in town – as seen in the current box office smash, Casino Royale. This isn’t your father’s James Bond. Instead, this Bond, played by the rugged Daniel Craig, is younger, edgier and still earning his License to Kill. (But as the film shows, he’s a very quick study!) Maybe you’ve heard your partner humming the Bond theme, or practicing his Scottish brogue while ordering a vodka martini, “Shaken not stirred.” Perhaps he even took up golf after watching Sean Connery hit the links in Goldfinger…

Wild turkeys, fox, red-tail hawks, bluebirds and breathtaking views welcome you to this gorgeous equestrian property high in the hills of Waccabuc. Set on over seven acres, High Meadow Farm features a post and beam barn with five stalls, centrally heated/air-conditioned tack room and bathroom, and 1500 square feet of lodge-like living space on the second floor. The two bedrooms, full bath, fabulous open kitchen, dining area and living room with cathedral ceilings boast walls of windows with panoramic views of the Wacccabuc River and Connecticut hills. With grass paddocks, riding ring, on LHA trails, near a 4300-acre park and a 100+ acre preserve, this facility is a proven income-producer. BONUS: There is a four-bedroom septic already in place with Board of Health approval to expand to a five-bedroom, and building site for that dream home! Contact: Anne-Marie Nordgren, 914.329.4015. License to Chill

Still thirsty?

Bond is a man who enjoys his libations, and number 1 with a bullet on his beverage list is a Vodka Martini made with Smirnoff, Bond’s on-screen spirit since Dr. No. Maybe James Bond didn’t invent the Martini, but he made it sexy and hip. Want to sip one in style? Here’s Smirnoff’s very own Martini recipe…

In honor of Casino Royale, try The Vesper, named after female character in both the novel and film.

Classic 007 Martini 1 1/4 oz. Smirnoff® Vodka Splash of dry vermouth Shake well with ice, and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Of course, Bond also likes his bubbly - and only one brand will do, Bollinger.

The Dream Machine

It’s been his favorite champagne since 1956 when it made an appearance in one of Fleming’s original novels, and Bond has popped the cork onscreen as well.

Ready to put your man of action way ahead of the automotive curve? For a mere $324,000 (approximate) Bond’s latest ride, the awe inspiring Aston Martin DBS can be sitting in your driveway. But why would you want to leave it there? In Casino Royale, Bond puts this car through its paces – including one spellbinding stunt you definitely don’t want to try on the Taconic Parkway! Of course, Aston Martin’s association with the Bond films goes way back to 1964 where 00 #1, Sean Connery drove a silver DB 5 in the timeless classic Goldfinger.

Like most things Bond, the DBS is very exclusive and won’t be available in the U.S. until late 2007, so put your name on a waiting list and cross your fingers! Available at Miller Motor Cars, Greenwich Ct. (203) 629-4726 www.astonmartin.com

Aston Images Courtesy: Aston Martin

The Vesper 3/4 oz. Gordon’s Gin 1/4 oz. Smirnoff® Vodka Splash of Lillet Blanc or dry vermouth Shake well with ice, and serve in a martini glass garnished with a large thin slice of lemon peel.

Playing To Win With a title like Casino Royale, it’s no surprise that Bond spends a fair amount of time gambling in the film. Thanks to upscale Belgian card maker Cartamundi, the man in your life can double down with the very same cards seen in the film - although hopefully the stakes will be a little more forgiving! Available at www.spyguise.com, the finest in spy movie memorabilia.

Investing in Bonds The first British editions of Fleming’s original Bond novels have become highly sought after collectables. The UK first edition of the first 007 novel, Casino Royale, published in 1953, can fetch upwards of $30,000 at auction or from the few rare book dealers who have a copy. Not a bad ROI when you consider its original price was around 10 Shillings – roughly $2.50 back then. So check grandfather’s bookcase!

Was there really a James Bond? Yes – he was a respected orthinologist who authored Birds of the West Indies. Fleming, who spent part of every year at his Jamaican estate Goldeneye, was a keen bird watcher and owned a copy. When he was looking for a masculine name for his soon-to-be-famous creation, all he had to do was pick up the book.

A 007 Primer...

Ian Fleming

Just so you can hold your own when the topic of James Bond comes up over dinner or a long drive in the country, here’s a handy fact sheet that we’ve declassified for you…

exploded onto the pop culture scene. He died in 1964 at the relatively youthful age of 56. The Bond novels and his other work, including the classic children’s tale, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide, a stunning literary legacy which continues to this day.

Meet the Movie Bonds…

The legendary creator of James Bond, Fleming really was on Her Majesty’s Secret Service, serving in the Office of Naval Intelligence during WWII. He authored 14 James Bond books, drawing some early inspiration from his illustrious friend, author W. Somerset Maugham whose career as an espionage agent in WWI was chronicled in his 1928 novel Ashenden. Sadly, Fleming only lived to see the beginning of “Bondmania” when his books and the films made from them

Four new-boxed sets of the classic films are now available from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment! Each Bond flick gets a generous double disc treatment – of course you get the newly remastered movies (which look phenomenal), but there are also in-depth documentaries, key cast and crew interviews, interactive guides, trailers, featurettes and audio commentaries. No deep cover here, just everything you always wanted to know about the James Bond series…

Sean Connery

George Lazenby

Roger Moore

Timothy Dalton

Pierce Brosnan

Daniel Craig

A former milkman, truck driver, artist’s model and coffin polisher, Connery began acting in the early 1950s. The tall, brooding Scotsman was about as far removed from the urbane, sophisticated 007 as you could get, save for one thing – charisma. His presence so impressed producers Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Harry Saltzman that he landed the plum role of Bond in Dr. No, released in 1962. He followed that up with four other 007 appearances throughout the 1960s. All were huge box office hits, making Connery a household name and launching a glittering four-decade career. Lured back into Bondage by the then-record sum of $1 million, he made one more “official” Bond appearance in 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever.

George who? Lazenby was a tall, athletic male model who took over after Connery called it quits. Although Lazenby’s film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, didn’t eclipse the box office numbers of the Connery Bonds, it is now thought of as one of the best and to his credit, Lazenby turned in a solid performance under what had to be enormous pressure. The film also features a heart melting song by Louis Armstrong called “We Have All The Time in the World” - making the soundtrack a must have! Inexplicably, Lazenby announced he wouldn’t play Bond again, so after his one starring turn his acting career took a hard left into Hong Kong action films and television roles.

A suave, dare we say, funnier Bond, Moore’s distinguished tenure lasted through the ‘70s and early 1980s. Before Bond, the actor had already scored a huge success with the ‘60’s TV series The Saint, and along with humor, brought a slick new style and interpretation to the role – but as the movies show, he could also handle the rough stuff with ease. Starting with 1973’s Live and Let Die, Moore made six other Bond flicks, ending with 1985’s A View To A Kill. All were immensely popular worldwide.

The producers wanted a return to a grittier 007 – and they got it by hiring Dalton, a serious Welch actor, previously seen in epics like Cromwell and The Lion In Winter. He made two Bond films, including 1987’s The Living Daylights. But then the world changed. The Iron Curtain fell, there was a New World Order, so it was time for a new James Bond...

The suave, drop dead good looking Irish actor almost had the role after Roger Moore, but his TV contract for Remington Steele kept him out of the shoulder holster until 1995’s GoldenEye. Brosnan followed that up with 3 more hit films including the 20th Bond adventure, 2002’s Die Another Day. Then he too retired – or was retired (film, like espionage, is a take no prisoners business) to make way for…

The latest member of film’s most exclusive club is a seasoned actor whose credits include roles in Tomb Raider, Munich and Layer Cake. Craig’s searing portrayal is closer to the original Fleming novels than any other. Although there was much controversy when his casting was announced (including a vicious antiCraig website and a slew of internet trash talk), he has more than proven himself and his debut; Casino Royale is on track to be the most successful Bond movie ever.

Bring Home The Bonds

Hopefully it’s “Mission Accomplished” for adding some 007 style to your man’s life.
