Welcome to the June issue of hipStyle. In this issue we’ll introduce you to the talents of painter Wendy Lindbergh and fine art photographer Susan Paulsen. Then it’s off to riding country as we profile the areas top equestrian facilities. You’ll meet the 4 women who have defied the odds in a male dominated world, turning out Olympic caliber horses and riders. We’ll take you into the high stakes world of Janie Weber, whose Stepping Stone Farm enjoys an award-winning reputation. It’s also the home of Janie’s two daughters: Juliana and Amanda Starbuck, well-known stars of the riding circuit. Janie, Juliana and Amanda run Stepping Stone as a family business, combining years of experience in the saddle and a passion for riding. Then, we’re off to South Norwalk, also known as SoNo, our hip neighbor to the east popular for its wonderful boutiques, waterfront atmosphere and irresistible restaurants. I’m happy to introduce three new contributing editors to hipStyle: Kristina Lindbergh who writes about this month’s featured artists; Rachel Florio who’ll covers everything that’s so fabulous in our area boutiques; and finally, Laurie McLaughlin, writer at large. Welcome to hipstyle. We hope you enjoy your time with us.

Susan Paulsen “Susan Paulsen’s small, lyrical photographs glimmer with a silvery luminosity, drawing us inward into a private, dreamlike world,” writes Jean-Luc Monterosso, Director of the École Maison Européenne de la Photographie, in his introduction to Paulsen’s book Tomatoes on the Back Porch. In the tradition of artists like Harry Callahan, Linda Connor and Robert

Wendy Lindbergh The subjects of Wendy Lindbergh’s oils – whether insects, Hostess Snowballs, naked quince trees in snow or the windowscape of a downtown loft – are specific, tactile and redolent, and all seem to be adored by light in all its humors. They call up with equal intensity the loneliest passage of a Bach cello suite or a treacherous craving for marshmallow,

Frank, Paulsen offers fragments of everyday life – laundry drying in a bedroom, a cat asleep on the breakfast table, bicycles through a screen door – that manage to capture for us the essence of affection, awareness and memory. Paulsen’s work has been exhibited at the Candace Dwan Gallery, 27 Katonah Avenue, Katonah (914-232-3966), at the Deborah Bell Gallery, 511 W. 25th Street, New York (212-691-3883), and the Maison Européene de la Photographie in Paris. crème filling and red dot #4. And her reverence for the emotional power of their forms is only intensified by the use of background materials like the dark wood grain that takes such an important part in the trompe-l’oeil world of jeweltoned jelly beans, and the gold leaf that glows behind a luna moth or a scarlet tanager. Lindbergh studied Art History and Studio Art at Stanford University and later in Paris at the École du Louvre, but she counts the celebrated painter, Avigdor Arikha, as her most important influence. Her work has been exhibited at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery at 748 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. For additional information please contact her in care of this publication at 914.630.4106.

the riding life...

Stepping Stone Farm. It may be the weekend, but just like every morning, Janie Weber is up early and out the door. But, instead of heading to the barns on her Ridgefield, Connecticut farm to start a day’s work, she’s off to Bridgewater for her version of rest and relaxation: foxhunting. “I’ve been foxhunting for the last couple of years, which I fell in love with all over again,” says Weber. “It’s my R&R, just getting away a bit from the horse show business and having good, old-fashioned fun outside, riding cross country.” In the late ‘80s the competitive equestrian industry took a major leap with the enormous growth of the A-Circuit Horse Show. “It’s the biggest circuit in the country,” according to Weber, and her riders and horses have steadily taken home ribbons for nearly 20 years. This includes competing at the granddaddy of all competitions, the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida, where she lives during the winter. “We take between 20 and 30 horses down to the Winter Equestrian Festival every year,” she says. “It’s probably the biggest horse show in the world right now with 17 international teams from around the world in top-level show jumping competition -- to be a part of that and get ribbons down there is really an honor.” Weber’s daughter, Juliana Starbuck, is one of the farm’s many riding champions. Juliana won the National Professional Horsemen’s Association rider of the year three years in a row and made it all the way to the finals of the 2000 Olympic Show Jumping Selection Trials. “She also won the State finals and the New England finals,” says Weber. “She’s a phenomenal rider.” In addition to being a Grand Prix rider, Juliana, 31, is also the head trainer and works with other competitive riders alongside her mother. “She’s really a jack of all trades, and she’s a much better rider than I am,”

laughs Weber. “I enjoy it as much as she does, but she has a special talent.” Juliana’s younger sister, Amanda Starbuck, 28, was also awarded the National Professional Horseman’s Association Championship for three years in a row, earned back-to-back National Amateur Hunter Championships—with Rio Bronco--- and won the New England Horsemen’s Adult Medal Finals. When she graduated from the University of

Vermont, she thought she was headed to New York City to pursue a career in public relations or marketing. But, she realized she couldn’t go without riding, and it was going to be one or the other, so she decided to live in the city and work on the farm as the operations and marketing manager. “Amanda has us headed in the right direction,” says Weber. “She’s working with the community, the Make A Wish Foundation and the Girl Scout

Badge Program. She even runs the adorable farm birthday parties!” says Weber. Amanda also works with Stepping Stone Farm’s Outreach Program, which hosts one local child free of charge during each of the seven-week riding programs during the year.

dropping the lesson program because it had become overwhelming,” says Weber. “And I’m so glad I didn’t. Every time I see those teeny girls with the ribbons in their hair smiling away and brushing their ponies, I realize I’ll keep doing this for another 20 years.” Her husband Harry is a retired United Airlines captain and does not ride.

Weber’s girls appear to come by their athleticism and love of the sport naturally. “I grew up in Greenwich with horses and started riding when I was eight,” she says. Weber, a previous State jumping champion, was a member of the Junior Olympic Show jumping squad and has received the Professional Horsemen’s Association trainer of the year award six times. Many of the horses she’s trained have won the National Championships and Reserve Championships. “I taught our little show team at Mount Ida College in Boston and majored in retailing,” she says. She opened a riding apparel and horse equipment store in Greenwich and continued to teach riding. At the time, she wasn’t certain teaching would be a lucrative, long-term career choice. “A lot of people in Connecticut’s horse country were also thinking about translating their passion into a livelihood,” she says, and “we all loved riding as kids, and we were all trying to figure out how we could create a local industry. It was really quite exciting.” In the early ’70s when Weber started her business, she admits, “we knew we liked riding and teaching but we weren’t certain how to make a business out of our passion. I tried to strengthen any weaknesses I had by putting a good financial team around me to teach me. I also tried to learn as much as I could from as many successful people in the horse business. One of those
